I voted …

posted at 2:45 pm on November 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

… and it took such a brief period of time that I didn’t even get an opportunity to take a picture.  When we arrived at around 10 am CT this morning, half of the booths were empty and no one was waiting in line for their ballots.  We even had parking in the lot available to us, which is quite out of the ordinary on Election Day.  Of course, the last time I voted, I did it at 7 am when the polls opened so I could get to work, an issue that no longer arises.

How did we vote?  I’m certain you know that I voted for John McCain, Norm Coleman, and John Kline for the national offices.  I voted against an increase in the state sales tax and a city bond issue to purchase land from a golf course, although the First Mate voted the other way on the latter.  (It was a tougher issue than it sounds; the city blocked the owner from developing the land into residential housing and didn’t compensate him for the loss.  I think the city should just allow him to develop the land rather than pay him $10 million to buy it.)

My friend and radio partner Mitch Berg told me a few years back that he always finds a way to vote for himself as a write-in candidate for a local office or a judicial post as a means of ensuring that his ballot got counted.  If he sees a vote for himself in the final returns, he knows it worked.  We decided to write me in for the city council, so anyone in Eagan who wants to make my life miserable can write me in as well.  If I win, well … I get what I deserve.

We’re hearing that turnout is heavy here in Minnesota, which is no surprise, since we do better at turnout here than any other state in the nation.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t get in quickly, if you plan well.

Dow up 300+ pts good omen for McCain victory.

One Sarbanes actually lost a Mayoral election in Baltimore earlier this year. Shows you what a cesspool Baltimore politics is when a Sarbanes isn’t left enough for a City (or what’s left of a City).

sbynyc on November 4, 2008 at 4:13 PM

That’s because he was running against Sheila Dixon an african-american hand picked by O’Malley. I actually thought she was doing a good job for a while since I saw all of the water works being replaced in the city. Then I found out it wasn’t Baltimore tax dollars at work. The feds had to come in and fix all of the pipes because they were sooooo bad and the City supposedly didn’t have the money.

So yes, your tax dollars are going to fix my pipes.

Stock market closed up 305 today, I call that a good sign in the election. Would people be buying stocks if they thought the cap gains tax was going to go up in a few months?

hehe, Unseen, great minds and all that

Poor_Knight on November 4, 2008 at 4:19 PM

I voted for the african-american and was proud of it…….Thomas Pinkston Harris, Republican for Congress. I can only hope that he will win over John Sarbanes, Democrat. I very happily cast my ballot against Sarbanes.

How badly does it reflect on me that I don’t remember the name of the republican I voted for?

Mid SF Peninsula, a barely-redder-than-average corner of a dark blue area. Voted around 10AM. Much heavier than usual but no lines (lots of machines), voters mostly middle-aged (uh, yeah, I guess I’m one now too) and older.

Not that that’s a good indication around here, I had a spirited conversation with a couple well into retirement the other day who are confirmed Obama voters. I think they’ve pretty much been straight-ticket Democrats since 1932.

JEM on November 4, 2008 at 4:23 PM

In North Carolina only “broken glass” Conservatives will wait in the rain to cast a vote. (Conservatives who are willing to walk on broken glass in bare feet to defeat Obama.) Obama supporters will not brave the elements. Besides, this think is in the bag for him, right?

DrStock on November 4, 2008 at 4:17 PM

I don’t know about that. The issue of race is still alive in NC. I think a lot of people will brave the rain to vote. Not the young vote and not the undeciders. But a heavy turnout is good for McCain all reports show a heavy turnout

just voted in CA, McCain / Palin. Dreier. Yes on 4, yes on 8. Most of my friends here in the blue lands of the left coast are Dems. Because of information gleaned from this site and reading Robert Spencer I was able to convince 11 of them to vote Republican for the first times in their lives. Have called all of them to verify, all have voted already. If others here have done the same thing we have a real chance here.

Poor_Knight on November 4, 2008 at 3:33 PM
Hey Poor_Knight, we’re in the same district!

I’m relatively new to this place. What was your feel for the turnout? I voted around 10 am and saw about 30 or so people… waited about 10 minutes. I heard that there was a very long line early in the morning with people waiting in the rain.

Y-not on November 4, 2008 at 3:59 PM

Hey, me too. Upland. I’m on permanent mail-in vote, so I don’t know what’s happening at the polls. In my immediate neighborhood, roughly 4-5 McCain/Palin to 2 Obama/Biden signs. And I can only boast 3 conversions (11 is awesome)..but I received a forwarded email from my inlaws today, all dems, itemizing all the horrors of Obama. Word is traveling.

Chimpy on November 4, 2008 at 4:29 PM

In 2004 I missed out on voting. I had to be at work before the polls opened, got tied up with an emergency, and didn’t leave work until after the polls had closed. So I knew I would make sure that didn’t happen this time. I arranged my work schedule so that I would have 3 hours off in the morning to insure I got to vote. When I got there I had my pick of parking spaces. Walked straight in, voted, left. Whole process took maybe 4 minutes. I was in the booth for maybe 45 seconds, not 15 minutes like BO!

Of course I am voting in Kentucky. . . .McCain’s up by about 18% here!

unseen on November 4, 2008 at 4:35 PM

OK – Here’s a logic question.

I have a McCain/Palin sticker prominently displayed on my SUV window. I live in SoCal, but up in Santa Clarita, the Northern fringe, and fairly conservative (Buck McKeon land).

I’ve only had one person provide any road rage comment – happened to be a mid-40’s age man in a new Cadillac. Gave me a huge thumbs down gesture, waving his arm all about and such.

Given a McCain victory (love the way that sounds and looks), when is the proper, respectful time to take the sticker off the car to minimize the risk of moonbat revenge? I know, Never!

My incliniation is to transform it into a PALIN! sticker.

johnsteele on November 4, 2008 at 4:36 PM

great post:

When Hillary Clinton suspended her campaign once the DNC selected Obama as its nominee, despite Clinton winning more votes than anyone in the history of presidential primaries, Team Hillary was heartbroken. This was made all the worse by Obama’s followers, who kept up their attacks on Clinton long after she left the race. They made fun of the person we respect most in the world, and berated all of us for our loyalty to her. In fact, strangely, some of the cruelest and most vicious attacks Obama’s followers ever made on us came AFTER Clinton conceded.

The way these people treated us, with Obama’s encouragement, is a large part of the reason so many of us voted Republican for the first time in our lives. The reason Obama will lose tonight is because of his followers, and the way they behaved.

There were 4 people ahead of me in line to get the ballot–the first time I’ve ever had to wait to vote at this precinct, and I had to wait to get an empty voting booth, too. But all in all I was in and out in a very short time, going at lunch time is probably smart.

The missus and I voted – early, a week and a half ago. We are right here in the shadow of the Bush Ranch, Repub all the way. There was a line, the parking lot was nearly full, but the poll workers were masterful at efficiently moving folks through. The turnout was heavy and I guarantee it was heavy McCain/Palin. I have been very nervous about this election, but recently I have a gut feeling of a huge surprise in store for the Dems. Btw, did I mention I love Sarah Palin?
