Congratulations, Obama

One of the last things Dean Barnett said to me was that, as best he could tell, Barack Obama is “a good guy and a decent man.” I don’t think he’d mind me telling you that, especially under the circumstances. It’s a testament to his generosity of spirit that even in the heat of a campaign, with every reason to think the worst of his opponent, Dean couldn’t help but give him the benefit of the doubt. That’s Barnett all over, and that’s what made him an indispensable man whom we’ve been forced, horrendously, to dispense with.

I offer that as comfort to those of you who have no faith in The One but who do have faith in, and abiding affection for, DB. My guess is he’d have handled the news tonight with the same magnanimity that distinguished all of his writing. So in that spirit, congratulations to Barry O on a race superbly run and to our country for not having let the wrong reasons deter it from making the wrong choice. I’ll never be a fan, but I swear I’ll never take a nutroots posture either in relishing his failures because it helps my party. Like it or not, he’s my president. As a great man once said, country first.

i know. don’t they make it clear that christianity = morality.

Holy crap…. there are fireworks going off for the past hour or so here in Burlington, VT. I heard uproarious cheers a while back too and asked some random person on the street if they heard it. They said it was Obama supporters. I said “you mean f-ing idiots, because the 2 are synonymous”. Turned out (as she got closer, walking her dog) it was some bull-dike and she was like “oh, maybe there’s a ball game”, I said, no “you were right the first time, it was idiot Obama supporters”. The roaring crowd was traveling for a couple of miles. Again, I wish I was dead.

RightWinged on November 5, 2008 at 12:33 AM

My question is, where were the Republican voters?

Bush won over 53 million. Obama is just barely over 51 million.

Congratulations to the African American community, This symbolizes what great progress our nation has made in terms of racial division.

Now, President Fraud can stick it….. too bad the media didn’t do it’s job in this election to expose you.

I have 4 years to do the media’s job I guess…. Count on it.

There are quite a few of us disgusted by this.

Dubn8tr on November 5, 2008 at 12:33 AM

I know your comment wasn’t to me, but I feel the need to respond. YOU’RE AN IDIOT! The American system? What? The system that permits media lies to get some socialist, terrorist befriending, infanticide supporting, America hating liar to run for office using funds he promised not to use (including cash from an illegal alien fugitive aunt living in government housing)? That system? We’re screwed, and attitudes like yours allowed it.

RightWinged on November 5, 2008 at 12:26 AM

Heh. I’ve been called worse. Attitudes like mine is what has kept the country together through FAR worse times. We’ll get through this. I have far more faith in the American People than any political party. Are we headed for dark times? Yep. Are things going to get ugly? Yep. Am I willing to throw in the towel? OH HELL no.

On the purely political side of this, and as others have said here, I don’t want to see the Conservative movement devolve to the level of the Democratic Underground, DailyKos, and the other nutjobs out there who see horrendous things as a benefit to their own political party.

Sorry if my attitude offends you but I won’t apologize for the attitude.

Pilgrim on November 5, 2008 at 12:33 AM

Please, please, get over yourself. If the voice of the American People is not enough to make him “your President” then you have no faith in the American System.

This man is my President. We’ll have our differences and I may not like him sometimes but I’m married to someone just like that too and I remain married.

God Bless and protect President-Elect Obama.

Pilgrim on November 5, 2008 at 12:23 AM

He’s not my President. I also want God to bless and protect him. If something is going to happen, I don’t want to have anyone else to blame but the Obamanation. He baracks up, I don’t want anyone else being blamed.

Wait for the coming tide of industry moving out of the US.

If people have any inkling that this man with his history, who “will heal the hole in our souls” will lead as a centrist you are in need of some real counseling on the nature of the demagogue. You have Stockholm syndrome already.

JustTruth101 on November 5, 2008 at 12:33 AM

The Nation has spoken and Obama is our President.

I join Allah in saying – As a great American once said, country first, amen.

But as I said in September – Palin was the wrong choice. It is a mistake that cost John McCain this election and for that I have deep regret.

AprilOrit on November 5, 2008 at 12:11 AM

If you believe that, you are already starting out on the wrong path for 2010/2012. AP is agnostic at best and a pessimist.

This election was lost due primarily the MSM covering for Obama, Obama’s good ground game, Bush and nation-building and spending fits with Repubs. in Congress. Without Palin, Mac would have lost another 2-3% of the popular vote. If he had picked Lieberman, I know I would have stayed home and not voted for him and there would have been thousands less volunteers as the election degenerated into Dole ‘96 again.

Palin was the ONLY bright spot in this election for McCain. I don’t know if she is interested in running for national office as POTUS or VP in the future. However, the Repubs. must field somebody to challenge Obama in 2012. Maybe she takes on that challenge at least to keep the GOP busy building out to 2016. I do know that she is a good wholesome face for the GOP if they want her to lead and she wants it herself.

I was pushing for Sarah to be on the ticket with McCain because I felt it was worth the gamble so that it would be a fight rather than going through the motions like Dole in ‘96. I pushed this knowing that Jindal was still in the minor league system if we needed him later, or Cantor.

I drove 700 miles to see her and got to simply shake her hand at the rally in FL. I stayed in Florida to help making calls, etc. Then drove back home.

Now, you name me one other VP choice that makes a man put up 1400 miles, four nights in motels, and a day and a half working phones in an effort he knows is still a longshot?

Come on. Gimme a name. You can’t.

Obama made Dems do that. Palin WILL too.

I am not talking ODS. I am talking holding his feet to the fire to keep his promises. I am going to hold him to account for the economy for the price of gas. Gas right now is $2.40 every penny it goes up is due to Obama. My electric bill charges me 10c kwh. Every penny it goes up is going to be due to Obama. His policies are the problem. Everytime a CEO ships jobs overseas I will yell at the top of my lungs that Obama is shipping our jobs overseas. Everytime my insurance premium goes up I will blame Obama and the dems in Congress. Everytime college costs goes up the dems get the blame. Everytime I get only a 3% raise or no raise I will blame the dems. every point of increased unemployment will be blamed on the dems, every tax increas in gas, fuel, income, sales taxes will be the dems fault.

My motto for the next 4 years will be “HAVE YOU HAD ENOUGH YET?” I will print up bumper stickers, I will comment on blogs, I will make my living on blaming the dems for the slow decline of the working man.

Bank on it.

carbon_footprint on November 5, 2008 at 12:36 AM

I kept hearing rumors of riots, I did not expect them on Hot Air. Let’s take a breath (or drink). We need to be united not divided.

I’m tired, I’m grouchy, and I’m mourning my country, my security, and my children’s futures. I’m heading to bed; those who cannot be civil should do likewise.

My memory fails me, but the sentiment sticks:

Little children, be good to one another.

Laura in Maryland on November 5, 2008 at 12:36 AM

Nice, Allah. Well done.

Alex K on November 5, 2008 at 12:36 AM

So before I head for bed…
No more Rino’s…I would rather lose fighting the good fight, then fighting for someone because I don’t want the other to win.
So much for thinking you can win the hispanic vote by catering to the liberal side.
Hispanics want fair border control, and fair immigration policies…the liberal Hispanics don’t. If McCain would have been a conservative on the border, while respecting the legal immigrants, and working on a real solution to the immigration problem, he would not have lost the Hispanic vote.
If he would have said NO on the bail out, and asked for cooler heads to prevail. If he would have asked for some of the great economic minds to come to Washington for a summit, rather then allowing know nothing senators (the same ones who got us in this mess) to bail us out, it would have been wise for our country.
I still think Palin was the best pick, and she should have had more interviews, and coached to tell arrogant interviewers like Gibson and Curic (sp) to stick it when they tried a gotcha. People love the press to be put in their place.
But we had no real conservatives to draw from, and the Republican powers are mostly Rino’s now.
Conservative will be popular after 4 years of pandering to the far left…so we better start finding them now.
…and Rush is just as happy, his show is guaranteed to be more listened to then ever. All of conservative radio has got a good boost from this election.
And finally, sadly, dems don’t need 60 for a filibuster majority. There are enough Republican wimps to fill in the gap they need to reach the 60.
…I am sad, not for me, but for America, I really think it made a terrible mistake…but then I hope I am wrong.
And until he casts his first vote, or makes his first policy change that negatively affects America, then I can honestly say I have nothing against him. I wish him well, until he takes away my liberties.
As I one said: Don’t blame Obama, he hasn’t done anything.

Congratulations, Mr. President. Now you face the world, and it will challenge you. Soon. You ran an incredibly successful campaign, but now it is time to take a good long look at all those promises you made. Some, possibly even most of them, will be impossible for you to keep without ensuring your defeat in four years. If you think the campaign has been stressful, if you think it has aged you, made you grey, made you cranky, then, prepare for stresses and expectations the likes of which you have never even approached. Everyone is watching you, Mr. President. What you do in these next few months and years will have an impact on the life of every man, woman, and child of these United States. They say that pressure can mature a man in moments, force him to grow up. Mr. President, I urge you to be a responsible president, and consider the effects that your actions will have. Again, congratulations Mr. President, you have taken on the most difficult and thankless job known to man. Everything will be your fault, that is inevitable. All those foreign “friends” will now look to you to bring this country low, but I have enough faith in you to believe that, despite our vehement disagreements, we share a love of this country and want her to succeed. When you refuse to humble yourself to them, they will hate you. These former “friends” will call you a warmonger, an imperialist, and all sorts of other labels that you will find unfair. Mr. President, you have taken on a job I wouldn’t… couldn’t want. I wish you the best of luck during your term and in the protection of this nation and her people. Mr President, may god bless you and keep you safe and on the proper path.

I’ll support him right up until the point he starts screwing up (which he being a Chicago pol won’t be long). After that, you’ll see me at the front of the Protests.

President-Elect Obama is my president, and your president. We lost, take it like a man.

We lost because we have allowed the leftists to control our academic institutions from pre-school to our major universities. We lost because we allowed the leftists to control most of the information carried over our broadcast networks. We lost because we got lazy! We expected the American people to remain traditional without reminding them again and again of our heritage as Americans. We have come a long way since the McGovern days. Obama is more liberal than he was and he wins the presidency going away!

We have a lot of work to do my conservative brothers and sisters. The battle is lost, but we can still win the war.

Yes, I thought about it, and I can honestly say…no more whining from the African-American community. America has proven that it is not racist (in fact it hates elderly more then blacks). African-American, you have no more excuses, you have arrived.
Highest paid athletes
Highest paid entertainers
Most powerful politician
Equal pay for college graduates (in fact greater)
We have proved we are not racist, so drop the race card.

Conservatism is still alive! McCain and the RINOs lost tonight, not true Conservatives. We didn’t have our dog in the fight. Obama’s win proved you can win without being in the middle.

I just tore myself away from the TV and obligatory bottle of courage to peruse the comments. Two thoughts:

1) You can’t lay this on ACORN. They organized and committed fraud, for which I hope they all rot in jail under the RICO statutes. But the margin of victory was way more than their BS in Ohio and other states.

2) I pray that the skinheads, Aryan Nation types, and other whack-jobs stay cool. The only thing that scares me more than Chairman Comrade Barack is the thought of President Biden. Obama is smart, even though inexperienced and posessed of hubris. Biden’s a proven moron.

Good night.

Anton on November 5, 2008 at 12:43 AM

Look, any conservatives on this site knew that our candidate was less than a perfect candidate. We lost because republicans got away from what made us winners. We didn’t hold the party accountable. I take responsibility for my part.
But listen up. Barrack Obama is our President-elect. I have a very tough time accepting his supporters, hell, even MSNBC is talking about how we have put terrorists on notice – but I hope that Obama will cross the party aisle, like our guy would have certainly done, over and over and over and over again. When he does, I will support him. When he doesn’t I will do what I can to fight him.
He is it. Get over everything else. It’s done. Don’t make asses of yourselves like the dems have done over the last 8 years.
Country First.
See you in 2010.

Okay, for the uninitiated, let’s recap a little history, so our good Leftist “Chimpy”, can go away.

The below, are ALL FACTS! “Chimpy”, if you can offer any PROOF that they are NOT facts, I’ll be happy to read your evidence, via posted URL’s.

Barak HUSSEIN Obama (PBUH) is, and they are such immutable FACTS, that I do not even need to provide any supporting evidence; you howerver, need to provide disproving evidence, which you cannot, and will not:

a Marxist: Check!
Anti-American: Check!
Anti-White: Check!
a Racist: Check!
Anti-Semitic: Check!
a Muslim: Check!
http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/pipes_obama_muslim/2008/10/09/138898.html
http://www.daylife.com/photo/01u33pL9Ns06D
practices “Taqiyah: Check!

Okay, now, let’s discuss you “Chimpy”, shall we?
The below are all immutable FACTS as well, but I’m willing to see your “evidence” proving otherwise; which you cannot, and will not provide.

Chimpy is:

Anti-American: Check!
Pro-Jihadi: Check!
Delusional: Check!
Democrat: Check!
Traitor: Check!
Leftwing: Check!
Nutbag: Check!

See how easy that was?

So, I’ve proved everything I needed to about Barak HUSSEIN Obama, and you too “Chimpy”.

As I said, if you can disprove anything, which you cannot, that I said about Obama, or yourself, I’m willing to listen?

jakabok_botch on November 5, 2008 at 12:44 AM

I am proud to be an American, and not for the first time in my life.

Now, Black America just might understand something about this country that they have been blind to.

This is not a racist country. It is THE GREATEST COUNTRY in the world.

In a short time, after the party is over, Black conservatives are going to be coming out of the woodwork. They will not want to be associated with the demise of what it is that makes this country great.

And we will finally see a country where the political argument will truly, finally be about ideology.

The race game is done.

The time is ripe for Black conservatives, many of whom have yet to discover that they are conservative, to come home to the Right, take leadership positions in larger numbers, and help put this country back on its feet again.

No longer will the Democrats carry 90% of the black vote.

It’s over.

Who is your president? Sarkozy?

mycowardice on November 5, 2008 at 12:45 AM

Folks, I have something to say. I am, and will always be, an American.

Tonight, American citizens chose between two American citizens to lead the rest of us and, effectively, the free world.

Damn near all of us here, including me, wanted the person who did not win. You know what? It’s an election. Sometimes we lose, sometimes we win. Remember we’ve won more often than not in the last few decades. The democratic process works, and I’m glad to be a part of it and be able to cast my vote freely for who I want, as I am glad for all of you and every person who voted one way or another in the last few weeks.

I am an American citizen. George W. Bush is the president of my nation, America. In ten weeks, he will hand the reins of power to Barack Obama, and Barack Obama will be the president of my nation, America. And when Russia, or Iran, or Venezuela, or whoever comes after us, I’m going to stand next to my president and say “Well, let’s see what you got”, just as so many Americans did seven years ago with Bush. If he screws up, so be it. We will give him plenty of hell, because trust me, we’re going to be holding him just as much to the flame as the libs held Bush.

Yet, tomorrow morning, we’re going to get up and go to our jobs. We’ll have what we want for lunch. Then we’ll go home, and read, or go out to a movie or with friends to drink, or come on HotAir and post, or hopefully have sex with someone (or something, not judging). We’ll do these things because this is America, land of the free. If you’re ready to turn over and die because the guy you backed didn’t win the presidency, you should be ashamed. You’re no better than the liberals who went into seizures the last two times. Are you Americans, or are you French? Make up your minds! This is our nation, and we’ll fight tooth and nail for our beliefs.

In the end, when the chips come down, Barack Obama is an American citizen just like you and me, and when trouble strikes, do you think he’ll want to die? Do you think he’ll want Americans to die? Do you think he wants to see this country collapse while he’s in charge? If you do, you really need a break from politics. If a nuke falls or city gets attacked, socialist or no, he’s gonna be pissed, just like a lot of Americans. If he doesn’t respond, we’ll toss him out on his ear. However, use a little common sense and realize that he’s not going to sit back and let the place burn. He’s not stupid, or else he wouldn’t have gotten this far (remember, this is the same logic we used for Bush). The guy is the president of the greatest goddamned country in the world, and don’t you forget it.

Let’s all relax, take a break from the most grueling presidential campaign in history, and stop wishing death on the guy like some jackasses who thankfully will no longer be posting here. Those of you that want to leave because you think the fight for conservatism is dead, good riddance. We’ve just elected a new president, and for all we know, it might not be as bad as some people have said. Let’s give the guy a chance. If he screws up, we’ll crucify him. Until then, I don’t know about you, but I refuse to become the new liberal nutbags. I am an American, and I’m proud of my country, its freedoms, and its people.

MadisonConservative on November 5, 2008 at 12:46 AM

Please don’t give up, our military will need your support more than ever in the next few years.

Sven on November 5, 2008 at 12:39 AM

The nation just flipped off the force, time for the force to return the favor and finally come home to their families and stay for more than half the time going forth to “nation build” people who truth-be-told were naive in believing we could be trusted to foster them through the birthing of their version of freedom on behalf of an American public who can so easily be beguiled into undermining the goals of the servicemember’s sacrifices.

The modern democratic party is like an alzheimer’s stricken COMINTERN member humming La Internationale from memory….

jumped stright from Marx to Stalin with no pesky in-between.
