Congratulations, Obama

One of the last things Dean Barnett said to me was that, as best he could tell, Barack Obama is “a good guy and a decent man.” I don’t think he’d mind me telling you that, especially under the circumstances. It’s a testament to his generosity of spirit that even in the heat of a campaign, with every reason to think the worst of his opponent, Dean couldn’t help but give him the benefit of the doubt. That’s Barnett all over, and that’s what made him an indispensable man whom we’ve been forced, horrendously, to dispense with.
I offer that as comfort to those of you who have no faith in The One but who do have faith in, and abiding affection for, DB. My guess is he’d have handled the news tonight with the same magnanimity that distinguished all of his writing. So in that spirit, congratulations to Barry O on a race superbly run and to our country for not having let the wrong reasons deter it from making the wrong choice. I’ll never be a fan, but I swear I’ll never take a nutroots posture either in relishing his failures because it helps my party. Like it or not, he’s my president. As a great man once said, country first.

I don’t know AP. Seems like a good argument only if applied to a patriot. One of the Loyal Opposition. BO is not loyal nor patriotic. He despises the very founding ideals of this experiment in human liberty. How can one see this other than the end of the Constitutional Republic and the beginning of European Socialism? I need to be drinking what you are. Anyway. I might as well give notice at work and join the ranks of the welfare leeches. Heck I can go back to school professionally and duck my loans. Free medical. Time off. Might as well get mine while the gettin’s good eh? No hard feelins and all that.

Thanks to you and your president for my newly found retirement.

I’m giving Obama the benefit of the doubt. He ran as a centrist and I’m trusting that he will govern as one and not as the radical Soros/Marxist leftie that I fear he is. The question is whether his wingnut radical left supporters will allow it. Pelosi and Reid will push a radical agenda and if Obama doesn’t put the brakes on it will be to his own peril. The media will serve as a huge buffer to his presidency and ACORN will provide a huge advantage in his reelection. Never the less, he starts with a clean slate in which to prove his worth.

This wasn’t a win by Obama. It was a win by the media for Obama. Without them, Obama wouldn’t have been elected.
Disgusting.

Oh, and ManlyRash, I hope you don’t leave: there’s nothing concilliatory about fighting until the very end. In fact, its part of the greatness which founded our vast United States. Sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. But we can agree with Roosevelt that this place shall never know the cold and timid souls of neither triumph nor defeat!
Other than that, I’m out of here for a few days. You guys are way too overreactive and emotional. And if I wanted to be around that I’d still be married.
Take care, and remember that tomorrow is a new day…not the end of the world. Why? Because so long as there are good people – like you – to do what’s right, it will always tend to spin in the right direction. Its only an amount of effort and time.

Congratulations to Obama and thanks to HotAir for the information provided during this election.
This is my 1st comment, so let me give you some of my observations:
1. The popular vote so far is 51/48 or 3 points. Yesterday, the RCP average gave 7.6 points lead to Obama! Nice comeback for McCain or great screwup for the pollsters?
2. Obama outspent McCain 2 to 1. The media were in the tank for Obama 2 to 1 (or more).
3. Obama also had the financial crisis playing in his favor.
And yet, on a popular level, he’s only ahead 3 points. He should have won by 20!
For me, this shows that the ideals of freedom and small government are still well alive. There’s nothing historic, just a democratic change of party in charge. This happens all the time.
FrenchguyinTaiwan on November 5, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Just turning 18 years old in June, I am extremely saddened to see that this is the tone set to beginning of my adult life. I voted today for John McCain, and I am very sad to see that he, and (in my opinion) the American people did not win. Don’t get me wrong, I would have loved to see a black president in my time, but Barack Obama was not the one I wanted to see. I do not think that Obama is a “good guy” or a “decent man”, just because he is the president elect. So much was swept under the rug, and the things that weren’t never took off. Just goes to show you that anyone can become President. I’m still in shock that a man with barely any experience, lack of judgment and an inconsistent voting record is the next president of the United States. God be with us all.
YoungAmerican on November 5, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Tonight, racism officially jumped the shark. If a black man can be elected to the highest office in the most powerful country in the world, it’s time to reassess just how horrible that country is towards its minority members.
(Which, as of tonight, includes us, I guess.)

The fact of the matter is, Obama had to move center to win (he ran as a tax cutter for goodness sake). If he moves back to the left, the Dems will pay dearly in the midterm elections. If he remains a centrist, well, maybe he can deflect some of the Pelosi/Reid insanity we’re about to see.
Either way, I think the America I love is still intact – but just barely.
One realization I had tonight: We really need to fix our education system. Truly informed voters don’t need the MSM to help them make a decision.

Their first moves will all be political to make sure they cannot lose in 2010. They will make fully legal every last illegal alien. They will make DC a state and give them two senators. They will ressurect the fairness doctrine, by the way, they don’t have to vote on it, barry can do it all by himself with an executive order to the fcc. They will put controls on the internet. I live in a county that has voted republican for president forever. Romney crushed mccain in the primaries. At this time of the evening it’s still not certain who won the county. There is no way in hell barry legitimately won here and that should be extrapolated thoughout the country. It is unlikely there will ever be a fair and honest election in this country again. Anyone who doesn’t believe it can’t happen here might want to go and read up about germany and austria before wwII.

Well, let’s see what the marxist does. Hopefully there will be enough resistance to his most radical ideas to prevent total melt-down before the adults can re-gain control
It’s time to start working for 2010 and 2012. It’s pretty clear that the idea of a candidate who “reaches across the aisle” and who can “appeal to the middle” wasn’t the real way to win, was it? Nor was letting the Dems and media pick our candidate. The only excitement in the campaign occurred after the conservative VP was chosen. Conservatives need to take back the party and boot the appeasers who got us into this mess. Reagan didn’t get two landslides by moving to the Democrat’s position, but by getting Democrats to move to his position.
We have two obstacles to overcome: 1) The media. I’ve been politically aware since I was very young and I’ve never seen the media so unabashedly biased. 2006 was the Twilight Zone; what we’ve seen this year goes beyond that. Somehow, we have to overcome this huge obstacle. The fact of the matter is that the bulk of American voters who aren’t very politically astute watch the main stream media and formulate their opinions and make their decisions accordingly. If congress does re-enact the Fairness Doctrine, we need to be working through that law to demand equal coverage for and by conservatives (we can make this work both ways). Very possibly we are going to see the failing media giants looking for and getting government bail-outs, dancing on the NYT’s grave may have been a bit premature.
2) The liberal wing of the Republican party. These are the ones who brought us to today’s state of affairs. They were open to letting Dems crossover and pick our candidate early. They were eager to espouse the views of the left: global warming agendas, run against Bush, etc. Conservatives have got to boot these people from control, they have managed to engineer the defeat of the Republican majority in 2006 and have now enabled the election of the most liberal, un-vetted presidential candidate in the history of the country. The first thing we need to do is stop donating to the RNC until they figure out that change is needed.
So, my question is, how do we start working this? How do I get involved locally to start reforming the party and rebuilding it?

Obama deserves his props. Yes he had a sycophantic media, an extremely unpopular incumbent of the opposing party, and a financial crisis that fell into his lap at just the right time, but it’s still an amazing achievement that he was elected President in 2008. I knew after his convention speech 4 years ago that he would be a future contender for the Oval Office, but I never thought it would be this soon(partly because he himself said he wasn’t ready).
That being said, while I hope for the best for my country’s sake, I’m not naive enough to believe that the triumvirate of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid will amount to anything other than disaster.
My feeling right now is that if we’re lucky, we just elected another Jimmy Carter. If we’re unlucky, we just elected another Herbert Hoover(with a little bit of Neville Chamberlain thrown in).

Yes, but unlike when Clinton won this is personal for me. I’m only able to afford my apartment (tiny studio costing 775 per month – in Evanston, IL) because of Bush’s tax cuts. If the tax cuts are repealed (which is likely), I’ll have to pay an extra 100+ a month. This makes paying for my rent and other bills much more difficult.
I graduated Summa in college with an accounting degree and would like to get a better paying job, but cannot because of the recession. How the hell is the Obama adminstration going to help me?? Unless I quit my job and move to the ghetto or decide to sleep with one of Mayor Daley’s associates, it isn’t. Jesus’ tax cuts aren’t going to occur and the spending crap he’ll push through will benefit A. the people who financed his campaign, B. union bosses, and C. poor black people living in the ghetto.

Agreed. I could care less about the man’s skin color; or to quote someone loosely, “it’s the political ideology, stupid”.
That being said, I won’t become really worried unless the Dems somehow gain supermajorities in Congress. Even with slim majorities in both the House and Senate, BillyJeff was not able to completely screw America in the first two years of his term.
I am deeply concerned, though, at how readily our enemies cheered on the prospect of an Obama presidency. Kennedy, LBJ, Carter, and Clinton were all weak on the world stage, and we are still dealing with their collective foreign policy failures.
Meanwhile I’ll congratulate Obama on his win. I can only hope the radicalism of his own past is blunted by the responsibilities of the office he will soon hold on Pennsylvania Avenue.
And I will completely understand it if Israel concludes that she is on her own.

The last time i saw Republicans stand up for their beliefs and fight back against the Democrats was in 2004 and that turned out pretty good for us. We’ve spent the past four years doing nothing as Democrats and their friends in the media pounded on us day in and day out and it’s cost us two elections, this one a landslide for a person who started his political career in the home of a domestic terrorist. The theory that we should be polite and wish our opponents well has lost and the time for magnanimity is over. Stand up for what you believe in, fight back and don’t compromise.
clearbluesky on November 5, 2008 at 12:07 AM
Republicans need to do the following:
1) Get together.
2) Formulate platform and what we stand for.
3) Unite and present ONE face on policy and end the public dissention in the ranks.
4) Clearly determine where we draw the line and fight/filibuster to all Hell freezes over: Fairness Doctrine, Card Check, Civilian Security Force, etc.
5) Pick a leader who will unite social, economic, fiscal, military conservatives.
6) Determine the future of neo-conservative philosophy in the party. Many Republicans are not happy with trying to save the world every day whether with our military and our money.
7) Study Obama’s campaign and pirate all the good stuff and duplicate his strong groundgame in 2010 (test election) and then really finetune it for 2012.
8) Pick a really good leader of the RNC who can raise money and can really present a good face to Americans and is slick with the TV interviews, etc.
9) BE a TEAM and FOCUS on whichever year you target whether that is 2010 or 2012 depending on objectives.
This is just a start. If you don’t want to be compared to Bush, don’t do Bushie things like spend a lot and don’t veto pork and overextend military in nation-building.

Where has my country gone? I am mortified. After all the blood and sweat and tears and hardship this country has gone through for over 230 years, we have, in the end fallen to sloth of mind and spirit and become the enemy. Marxism will kill us before we can rebuild. This man has been selected and elected. He will never leave his new post and will crush my beautiful country. I am so damn grieved…

This is the beginnings of one-party rule.
We may pretend, and may play the gentlemen, but this is the beginning of an era of fallacy which will make Jimmy Carter’s inept caperings look like the doings of a second Washington.
Just because the man and his minions was more organized doesn’t make him worthy of any admiration, nor does it portend that he’ll run things with any thoughts in his head but those of party, ideology and arrogant presumption.
I have seen no evidence in his nearly two years of motoring toward Pennsylvania Avenue of the decency he’s supposed to have…I’ve seen only pride, cold calculation and a sense of entitlement. That forcasts badly.
The cult of personality, with worshipful throngs there to punish nay-sayers as heretics, has begun. Mark my words, it will end badly.
Mr. Bush made this inevitable. Mr. McCain’s missteps made this inevitable. The sold-out press made this inevitable. We must learn to live with it.
I harbor for Mr. Obama no ill will. He will need none. I wonder at my country. I submit to God’s holy will.
…and I plan to watch and wait.

I’ll admit it. I was wrong. And as such, I go.
It’s been fun to work with everyone. I am officially out.
AP and Ed, please delete this account for good if at all possible.

I guess America just wanted to get it over with…
Come on Barack big spender hit us where it hurts, defend your enormous deficit and by blaming it on George Bush.

I’m officially making the first call for Obama’s Impeachment right now, for any cause!
I’m also proclaiming him as of now: “Worst President Ever”; and I will use that tag when ever I talk or write about him.
That’s the respect that the Anti-American Traitor Democratic Left gave to President Bush since his first day in office, and that includes Obama (PBUH), and that’s the exact respect I will give them, and him!

*PUKE* I’m just curious, since I have a video game company that is in it’s embryonic state right now, how could I better protect myself from the spreader of wealth? I have lots and lots of family members in S. Leyte and Quezon. I need to know the benefits financially of outsourcing and as far as paying them the prevailing wage of the country, I’ll pay them the same amount of money as I would have paid an American in this country. Cheap labor was never a consideration when I was thinking of this.

Like it or not, he’s my president. As a great man once said, country first. – AP
I haven’t waded through the comments so my apologies if this point has already been made.
AP: I totally agree that my country comes first. What comes first for Obama? That answer determines this country’s immediate future.
As another great man said: Live free or die.
Also: All it takes for evil to win is for good men to do nothing.
Obama is not a good man. Barring a ‘road to Damascus moment’, he will not be either.

oppossing Clinton and being negative worked, oppossing bush and being vile and negative worked, we’d be insane not to go for the jugular on Obama.
this is what changes the ‘mood’ eventually for the mindless moderates to take in and then vote on

I cannot believe Ohio voted for Obama, and Iowa. F#$k!
I thought knew Ohio. I beleive less in America right now than at any other time in my life.
Theworldisnotenough on November 5, 2008 at 12:08 AM
Ha! Obama just said “we won’t get there in one term.”
terryannonline on November 5, 2008 at 12:08 AM
I’m going to puke.
So, what do we do? Everytime Obama screws the pooch we just grin, bear it, “buck up” and put country first?
Or are we going to take the damn fight to them?
If we are going to cede the frickin fight for that kind of platudinous BS (the same kind of BS we’ve been lambasting The One for BTW) then what the hell is the point?
I will not do to Obama what the Left did to Bush. But it doesn’t matter, we’ve already seen what even justifiable criticism will be called – “racist”.
And another thing, why should I be happy that America elected a black man for President when that man is the wrong one for the job? Does the color of his skin give him some kind of shield for his leftist/socialistic politics?
Many have tried to make the argument that race doesn’t, shouldn’t matter. Yet I hear and read that that very thing is somehow special? The content of Obama’s character is what should matter right – or IS it the color of his skin?
Many on the right are justifiably and understandably pissed, we have every right to be. Expressing that frustration is, if nothing else, cathartic. Because of that I think that a few days of angst isn’t the end of the world, nor does it equate to anything of the dKos caliber.
I don’t mean any disrespect, but Obama being a “good and decent man” is irrelevant frankly. It will also make for a poor footnote if he runs our country into the ground.
