Congratulations, Obama

One of the last things Dean Barnett said to me was that, as best he could tell, Barack Obama is “a good guy and a decent man.” I don’t think he’d mind me telling you that, especially under the circumstances. It’s a testament to his generosity of spirit that even in the heat of a campaign, with every reason to think the worst of his opponent, Dean couldn’t help but give him the benefit of the doubt. That’s Barnett all over, and that’s what made him an indispensable man whom we’ve been forced, horrendously, to dispense with.

I offer that as comfort to those of you who have no faith in The One but who do have faith in, and abiding affection for, DB. My guess is he’d have handled the news tonight with the same magnanimity that distinguished all of his writing. So in that spirit, congratulations to Barry O on a race superbly run and to our country for not having let the wrong reasons deter it from making the wrong choice. I’ll never be a fan, but I swear I’ll never take a nutroots posture either in relishing his failures because it helps my party. Like it or not, he’s my president. As a great man once said, country first.

The United States of America elected a fraud who associates with American hating terrorists, American hating preachers, American hating friends, as it’s president tonight.

Think about it.

Fixed.

gumble on November 4, 2008 at 11:48 PM

Look, I agree with AP. We hated how much the nutroots had the BDS syndrome. Let’s not have an OBS syndrome. He is our president. Lets make it a battle of ideas, not personalities.

Let’s find ways to communicate conservative values to the common folk out there. They are blindly listening to the media. As far as I see it, the media is much more powerful than we think.

Sure. I agree. But blast Democrats, screw Democrats and ambush Democrats with each and every opportunity.

Again- you guys might be too young to remember, but in 1995 Clinton made a handshake agreement with Newt Gingrich, and immediately went out to the press and told them that try as hard as he could, those Republicans just would not compromise.

Now it’s our turn.

Wow, that’s the perfect olive branch. Nicely done.

That is a thoroughly decent and correct sentiment. Nothing was more distasteful than listening to people insist that George W. Bush wasn’t their president. I may not agree with Obama and may think his abilities are wildly overrated but its vile to think he doesn’t want what he believes his best for his country.

alex342 on November 4, 2008 at 11:44 PM

Yeah, give it some time to sink in. See what Reid and Pelosi have planned. See what Frank has planned. See what the radical gays have planned. See what happens. It will happen.

I wonder how long before they threaten Churches’ tax exempt status if they refuse to honor gay marriage. That one is coming too. You wait. Wait until the uber radical Lefty judges. Wait until they slash the military – 25% according to Frank. Pull out of Iraq…. Bankrupt coal.

long_cat on November 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM

I am not cheering. I am in fear for our troops. These brave men and women deserve a leader who is tested and experienced, not charismatic.
He is the president elect.
But nothing much. Money and race got Obama to the White House. A shame.
He will be in charge of an economic crisis that will be perpetuated by the liberal congress and senate to worsen conditions. He will be the Jimmy Carter times 10 of the USA.
Our party needs a major change of leadership in the RNC (Newt) and RNCC.
Also we have some bright stars in Pawlenty, Palin, and Jindal (who I think will be our nominee in 2012).
I am not acknowledging Obama as my president. I think he is a very shady character. I fear for my country and the men and women overseas serving our country.
That is how I feel.

jencab on November 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM

No congrats for cheating.

Lesson learned: Americans prefer to vote for a real Democrat, rather than a Republican pretending to be a Democrat. Loved the way Mexicans massively rejected Senator Amnesty.

Plan: Went to 100% cash this afternoon. Ready to day trade and hit the “short” button early and often. Happy DOW 6000.

Worry: When and where will the 1st terrorist attack hit us?

Question: How to trade gasoline futures?

Well of course I’m not happy with the result and a huge portion of Obama voters are basically little more than members of a cult. That being said I hope he does a good job. However I say that because lets be honest, if he absolutely screws up as president he won’t be the one to pay for it, people like me will. (Instead he’ll be able to do speaking tours with sycophants lining up for hours for the rest of his life. Hell, he’ll probably a nobel prize for something.)

Oh yeah, and watch, every iota of progress in Iraq and Afghanistan will be attributed wholeheartedly to Obama by a drooling, fawning, adoring media. Mark my words. The reason Obama won’t do to liberalism what some vote-abstainers were hoping is that the press will be his eternal tireless advocates. His approval rating won’t ever go below 40. And the public will trust him and the Dims in Congress to keep up the “positive” trend.

Again I say, we’re screwed.

I also echo Allah’s sentiments: While I disagree with the man, I will support Obama as my president. I refuse to lower myself to the level of the nutroots’ BDS, Bush-bashing, whiny sore-loser mentality just because my guy lost.

Well, I was hoping that the right would be a lot more grown-up than the left has been for the past eight years, but I guess I was just dreaming. “He is not my president”? Blaming the media? Calling people traitors? Give me just a little bit of a break.

The simple fact is that if the Republican party hadn’t been intellectually bankrupt since the mid-’90s, tonight’s results might have been just a wee bit different.

I hated it when people said Bush wasn’t their President, and it’s an equally loathsome – and, dare I say, un-American – sentiment when it’s applied to Obama. One thing that was drilled into our heads over and over again in the army was “respect the rank.” I agree with very few of Obama’s policies (or what he says his policies will be, anyway), but if you are an American, he is now your President-elect. Respect the rank. And show the left the difference between loyal and disloyal opposition.

But here we are. All the best to President (elect) Obama. We are here with you.

OT: Just saw on Fox a large crowd cheering right outside the White House. Stay classy lefties.

You see.. but Reagan was actually known in 1976. He ran against Ford in the primaries. There is no Reagan for 2012. Palin has been trashed forever… And it certainly isn’t Romney or Huckabee. Who do you think that Reagan is???

Illinidiva on November 4, 2008 at 11:55 PM

Why don’t Palin or Romney have a chance?

This is what the country gets for eight years of Bush.

MedSchoolCatholic on November 4, 2008 at 11:54 PM

Ugh. I hope you aren’t that in real life. “My car battery died” “That’s what you get for forgetting to take the trash out”.

Spirit of 1776 on November 4, 2008 at 11:57 PM

Don’t count on it. Could you also tell him not to raise our taxes and take away our Rush Limbaugh?

HornetSting on November 4, 2008 at 11:55 PM

I’m not. But what choice do we have at this point?

phronesis on November 4, 2008 at 11:57 PM

Palin has been trashed forever…

Maybe not. We live in an era when the conventional wisdoms are getting blown apart. She might be able to come back from this, and I hope she can.

Sorry to break it to you, but get ready for “Mitt is It – now more than ever!” leading the buyer’s remorse ticket in 2012.

McCain’s speech was a marvel of grandiloquence and generosity, even as his heart was breaking. It was a call for healing and forgiveness and I was almost convinced.

Almost.

Until I remembered that less than 36 hours earlier Obama congratulated McCain the same way he had done to Hillary — with a Freudian flip.

Even worse, I remembered that former Muppet Bill Burton likely will be the next Press Secretary.

I’m not ready to make nice. Sorry.

Yes, I agree we should not behave as classlessly as the left has behaved. But I can’t help but believe that it has been conservatives playing “Mr. Nice Guy” that has contributed to our being where we are now. We have offered up moderate to liberal candidates who do their level best to be inclusive and ‘reach across the aisle,’ and I can’t see where that has gotten us. So are we to compromise more? Many hope that the Republican party will learn from this and grow stronger and more conservative. I hope that is true, but more and more are content with their bread and circuses, and given the Republican track record of compromising principles to get along I am not confident that that will happen.

Hoping for the best.. preparing for the worst.

Not wishing this but how bad will the sell off be tomorrow to avoid The Ones capital gains taxes?

Also, how soon does Israel strike Iran?

Yakko77 on November 4, 2008 at 11:58 PM

Perhaps this is the bitter defeat I still taste, but I swear I will respect President Obama as much as the left has respected President Bush.
