Congratulations, Obama

One of the last things Dean Barnett said to me was that, as best he could tell, Barack Obama is “a good guy and a decent man.” I don’t think he’d mind me telling you that, especially under the circumstances. It’s a testament to his generosity of spirit that even in the heat of a campaign, with every reason to think the worst of his opponent, Dean couldn’t help but give him the benefit of the doubt. That’s Barnett all over, and that’s what made him an indispensable man whom we’ve been forced, horrendously, to dispense with.
I offer that as comfort to those of you who have no faith in The One but who do have faith in, and abiding affection for, DB. My guess is he’d have handled the news tonight with the same magnanimity that distinguished all of his writing. So in that spirit, congratulations to Barry O on a race superbly run and to our country for not having let the wrong reasons deter it from making the wrong choice. I’ll never be a fan, but I swear I’ll never take a nutroots posture either in relishing his failures because it helps my party. Like it or not, he’s my president. As a great man once said, country first.

I totally agree with you. Being an Air Force wife I worry on a level that only military families understand. Clinton cut the military off at the knees during his terms and now the posibility of a total neutering of our armed forces is something this country cannot afford. I remember when I was younger watching people in the middle east throw rocks at approaching tanks and thought how crazy that was. Could that be us? Metaphoricaly speaking…or a small glimmer of reality.

I guess we’ll see what happens now. I’m confident that if there are excesses in what the Democratic party tries to implement in the next two years, that they’ll pay for it in the 2010 Mid-Term elections.
My most major concern is hoping there won’t be a terrorist attack on American soil. I think it was more than just a coincidence that nothing happened here after 9/11.

Perhaps a dead thread, but here goes anyway. It’s 3:30 in the afternoon here in Jordan, and I spent the day listening to this Islamic country celebrate the first Moslem president in U.S. history. I’ve known this all along–the Islamic world considers him to be a Moslem. He was born into that faith, and in their eyes, you can’t ever leave. I’ll leave you all to contemplate what consequences that will have in the future.
In a sense, we got exactly what we deserved. We spent months telling the world that our own candidate was a coward not worth voting for, and they believed us. We sure enough showed those RINOs who’s in charge–and who’s in charge is now the ultra-left fringe of the Democratic party. Well done.
One ray of hope. My fiancee is Albanian, and she’s laughing at the doom and gloom that conservatives are showing right now. She lived through real Communism and Enver Hohxa. So I have faith that America will survive. Of course it will. We now run the risk of sounding like the KosKids and moonbats we’ve been making fun of for years. What’s next, threatening to renounce our citizenship?
Suck it up. Find the lesson and learn it, whatever it is, for next time. Take comfort in the small things–we still have our families, the NFL still plays on Sunday, Dominos still delivers. Let’s live our lives the way we always have, and prepare for 2010.

I am sick and tired of the media thinking they need to educate McCain voters and that we need some kind of healing. No, WE DO NOT NEED HEALING. We are going to organize and fight this administration and we are going to vote in a strong opposition come 2010 and a new President in 2012. We can’t let the media continue to brainwash the rest of America, telling us up is down and left is right and blue is red. No more!!
My ticket for 2012, Gingrich / Jindal.

Does it really make sense to piss off 1.2 Billion Muslims for 6 Million Jews in Israel? No not all Muslims are radical Nuts. The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace
The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. He never lost faith in America or her people, and has tried his hardest to continue leading our nation during a very difficult time.
Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. It has shown to the world how disloyal we can be when our president needed loyalty — a shameful display of arrogance and weakness that will haunt this nation long after Mr. Bush has left the White House.

I tend to be long winded so I will try to be succinct.
More Illegal Aliens + More ‘Dis-Enfranchised’ minorities= more democrat votes.
More indoctrination in schools and college’s = more democrat votes.
The passing of many ’senior’ republicans every year = less republican votes.
How does any of that equal things being better in two, or even four years. Things will get worse, MUCH worse.
It will be at least one 20 year cycle before we see change, IF we can last that long.

You will get your wish, Dennis. President BO will throw Israel to the wolves. But the Muslims will not like us any more for it.
And not all American Jews are suicidal liberals who seek the destruction of their homeland. Just as not all Muslims are radicals.
So go paint your broad brush appeasement somewhere else.

Some of those who have written here appear to be bitter in defeat. I didn’t want Obama to win either but the people of the US have made their choice. We must respect that choice. To think that I have lived to see an african-american become president is so exciting. Back in the sixty’s I never thought it possible. I sincerely hope Obama is successful as our President.
The Marines were always color-blind. Now the nation seems to be. That makes me more proud than ever of the American people. It is a special day for America and some are too blind to see that. This nation is truly the land of the free.
I wish that the partisan bickering would end here and now. For those wanting to leave the country I wish you the best. Please don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. Some of you are so petty as to wish Obama ill. Those who do don’t seem to realize you are wishing America ill when you do that. That is simply wrong.
As for the rest of us we’ll work on putting the GOP back on the right track. In two years we can begin to reclaim the House and Senate back. In 4 years the Presidency can be ours again.
McCain gave a wonderful consession speech. One we should all listen to again. Its a time for America to come together to solve our major national issues. As John McCain said “Godspeed President-elect Obama”.

The inherent problem with systems that give power to the people is that they only work when the majority of the population uses their noodle. From the 1960’s on Americans began to lose their ability to think critically and discern truth – when they even acknowledged there WAS such a thing as truth – and now here we stand with Generation Ipod.

This is what I told my college student daughter, who voted against raising ANY taxes during this “economy”,and has to face her immature, gloating classmates and professors today. I tell her about the gas lines of the Carter years and the Iran hostages and point out that we’re still here. She’s upset that people take the freedom her granddad fought so hard to preserve for granted. I understand, but we still go on.
And, is Manly really gone?
Moxie on November 5, 2008 at 8:54 AM
Well, he did prove that under his leadership, ’60s radicals, Marxists, academics and the liberal intelligentsia, Hollywood, lapsed Catholics, Jews, the media, and the New Black Panthers all can put aside their vast differences and agree on one thing: “We hate America.”
saint kansas on November 5, 2008 at 8:54 AM
What do you mean by “we”. If you mean the party of liars & losers that increased the power of the federal government more than any in our history, that spent, stole and wasted more of the people’s money than any in our history, that had the power to stop Fannie & Freddie but never did so, that only approved the surge because ol’ Maverick dragged them there kicking and screaming, whose leaders were all on the Amnesty Bandwagon…
Well, screw those bastards.
The one real bright spot today should be the immolation of the Republican Party. Bush and the GOP destroyed the character and reputation that Ronald Reagan built up. Their actions made a lie of every principle they were elected to uphold.
I’ll only follow someone like Sarah who will plainly stand up for conservative principles and is willing to pick a fight with the opposition and the media. That let’s out just about everyone in the GOP. If the Flakes, Coburns, DeMints and Steeles will beat down crooks in the leadership I might come back, otherwise I’d rather see a new party rise.
Rush is right that conservatives have to be educating constantly about how freedom and capitalism work. Reagan did it. Besides Newt I can’t think of any Republican on the national stage that stands up for free enterprise. Name me one p.o.s. GOP leader that stood up to Bush and Paulsen and their Bail Out Panic Plan?
They’re dead to me.

Young voters are gullible, but not totally stupid. They also understand (when you explain it) that the baby boomers and seniors are going to bankrupt their country and have them paying their bills forever.
Yes, some “new arriving aliens” want a handout. Most want jobs. Government doesn’t provide jobs. Businesses do. Think we can make that point, folks?

Be resiliant. It’s a two party system for a reason. Stand up for your values and ideals. Fight the good fight. Be graceful in loss. Pouting and bitterness to nothing to advance the cause. Find a positive way to do that. Educate your childen; educate someone’s children. Teach Sunday School. Volunteer. Donate to a PAC. Be vigilant. Defend the Constitution. Study what happened in this election and why. Pay attention to what your elected representatives are doing and hold them accountable.

A few things to consider and ponder:
1. The race-baiters can now put the race card back in the deck. We finally have a president-elect that doesn’t look like every other past president (old white guy), so now the thought that anyone can become president has been proven true.
2. I would not like to be in Obama’s shoes at this time in our history. The economy is tanking, we are fighting two wars which have been terribly directed from DC, there is great unrest in the Middle East/NK/VZ, and we still have a target on our collective backs due to our friends in AQ and other Islamofascist groups. He’s got a lot on his plate to deal with, which leads me to ….
3.….This thought: If he leans too far to the Left, the half of the country that hates him will scream that he truly is a Marxist, which would mean he has to move more to the Right, whereby the moonbat fringe will scream that he’s a sellout, and the part of the country who (legally) voted for him will feel that he was just another politician who talked the talk, but won’t walk the walk. As for those who would do us harm, sure, they’ll sit down and negotiate with him…and negotiateandnegotiate, etc. but they’ll keep him in circles and we’ll never get what we want.
4. In my small corner of the world, Norm Coleman beat Stuart Smalley by less than 1,000 votes. The system, despite it being abused and spat on by certain people, still works.
5. Oh, and the sun came up somewhere today, and while I’m not happy with Obama’s election, hopefully it will get the GOP motivated to get it’s head out of its butt and find some real conservatives to bring the party back to where it should be.
Blue-eyed Infidel on November 5, 2008 at 9:19 AM
Very tired of hearing the ‘FIRST African American President’.
Obama is BIRACIAL, and secondly, I thought this wasn’t about RACE!
The American dream has always been alive and well. Because a large group in this country doesn’t think so because they are so entrenched in the welfare/goverment will do it for me system doesn’t make it any less alive! Any man/woman who runs for President and makes it achieved his/her American dream. Obama has not cornered the market on that one!
The kool-aid drinkers will now look to the Messiah to make all wonderful for them. And when he doesn’t, he’ll get heaped into the pile with Bush and the rest of them.
I will respect the office of President of the United states, but I will use my right as a citizen to let him know what I expect of him, after all, he is our employee and he was hired to work for us!!

Imagine a young white canidate with almost no papers, who had confessed Allah as God and Mohammed as his prophet, had Marxist leanings, was good friends with an unrepentant bomb-throwing terrorist and had spent 20 years in a church with a pastor who preached hate against blacks.
How far would that hypothetical candidate get in the race for President?!
Obama is the biggest example of Affirmative Action this nation has ever seen. He’s a reverse Oreo who rejected his white heritage in order to play a deck of race cards all the way to the White House. Well, this is my first comment on here, so I’ll be brief. I will congratulate this president-elect only because his success seems that it will be tied to the success of my beloved country.
I have very little confidence in his ability to do ANY of the things he’s promised. My deepest hope is that he will move towards the center, and govern as a true pragmatist, which he claims to be.
I also am shocked by and ashamed of the dupes that actually voted for this snakeoil salesman. I could give less than a shit about “the first African-American” being elected. His race means nothing to me, and I hope we can stop hearing that crap soon. I am also disgusted by the McCain advisors who are now turning on Sarah Palin. Yes it did. Well, Obama himself had a hand in the housing bubble, talked up recession fears, and will have been responsible for some (can’t say how much) of the stock market plunge with his drive to raise taxes.

Big O’s concession speech was a pretty good. I think we should all be hopeful that his actions will be guided by his rhetoric, and not by his associations.
The truth is, we’re only guessing what he’ll do, because 1) he’s never been an executive, and 2)he hasn’t made much policy as a legislator. He could well see the Presidency as a popularity contest, and try to come up with solutions that everyone will be happy with.
hawksruleva on November 5, 2008 at 9:47 AM
There is change already. The reaction around the world is extraordinarily positive. It is a new day in America.
In this country, we finally received accountability for the gop failures and outrages.
The people have spoken in a huge way. We are going in a new direction with new policies.
Let us support President Obama and pray he can clean up the gop mess.

Someone asked a question here last week, wanting to know what the vets of WWII thought about this election. My father is 82-years-old, and even though he voted for McCain, friends his age were going to vote for Obama. Their reasoning was that the people needed a lesson, to learn how bad it can be with a Democratic president.
That may be the case, that we all need a good lesson; however, my fear, that is shared by others, is how much damage can be done in the meantime?
My concern is, is there anyone who can bring the Republicans back? I don’t know of anyone.
moonsbreath on November 5, 2008 at 9:48 AM
Long shot silver lining: the possibility that the new entitlements the Obama will slide through congress will be the last straw, and will generate a mandate to get rid of them all.
Yeah, not likely, but hope.

Of course they don’t condone it, thankfully. As one who has consistently argued against hateful posts in general, though, what kind of things have you posted — here or elsewhere — in the last few months? I don’t recall seeing you around here lately, but based upon your braying and ungracious posts today, I have my suspicions I know the answer.
We’ve all got to understand the difference between rivals and enemies. As rivals, we all (a relatively few radicals like Michael Moore and Bill Ayers excepted) want the best for America and Americans, but have different views of how to accomplish that, and can debate the merits of our views with civility. As enemies, all we can do is crap on each other.
Congratulations. Your guy won. You’ll reflect credit on yourself and your viewpoints if you show some graciousness in winning. We’ll all reflect credit on ourselves and our country if we engage the political process with dignity.

We’ll see.

Obama’s race didn’t have a thing to do with the housing bubble, his principles did.
How can anyone affect change in a government totally ruled by liberals?

Barack Obama is now given the rarest of chances in life: the opportunity to prove his critics wrong.
I hope he takes advantage of this moment and succeeds.
God bless the United States of America.

That “positive” reaction you are seeing is all the wolves licking their chops, eyeballing the sick old stag.

You believe that?

And this morning, I got up, and on a November morning in Wisconsin, the sky was sunny and clear, and it was 65 degrees out. I got in my car and came to work, where I do my job well enough to have plenty of time to come here and read and post and realize that the world didn’t end.
I love America. It withstands all.
MadisonConservative on November 5, 2008 at 9:51 AM
They are right, by the way. And, there will be someone come along that can take command of the conservatives. The lesson will be most imortant.
saiga on November 5, 2008 at 9:52 AM
Sad, but true.

Might as well give him a chance to prove it.

For those with short memories and/or double standards, here’s the origin of the snipers wanted meme.
Please note that only trained professional broadcasters are qualified to joke about death threats. Amateurs should not attempt to replicate these jokes at home.

Plenty of white congressmen contributed to the collapse of the GSE’s, and race had little to do with Greenspan keeping interest rates too low or Wall Street CEO’s leveraging up to 30x levels on instruments that Moody’s didn’t rate properly. The origins of the market collapse began last July when credit markets started to tighten up. The odds at that point favored Hillary getting the nomination.

Nobody has yet talked about the “National Defense Force” and wth is that?
Nobody has mentions the un-”Fairness Doctrine”…
Nobody has spoken about a “25% Cut to our Military”…
**** Americans are in for some HUGE changes, I wonder who, besides the far left trolls here, are REALLY wanting that as change and how will they react when they see Obama’s real intents play out?
Mark Garnett on November 5, 2008 at 10:00 AM
There may be a silver lining in all this though it does not seem like it now. The bad part is that Republicans did not show up this year. Lowest turnout in 30 years. Short by over 7 million voters. Nothing anyone could have done.
But Obama was able to do what no Republican was able to do in those same last 30 years. To get a significant number of Democrats to hate the Democratic Party and actively work for the other side.
It’s easy to place blame or say that the Dems that voted for McCain were insignificant, but this is unrealistic. Dems worked phone banks and knocked on door for the other side’s candidate. I have never heard of this, ever!
Republicans need to find leadership that will unite the party again. A good portion of Democratic base isn’t there anymore no matter what you hear or saw in this election. However, Republicans can rebuild. That option is gone with Democrats. I don’t think anyone here realises just how much the Democrats screwed themselves over this year. They gave up the future of their party to be able to win this time around. There was no realignment. The Democrats can’t have $600 million candidates every time and they can’t vote against Bush every time. This was an election that Democrats were supposed to win big and yet margins were 1% to 4% in states that switched. Although I was optimistic, part of me is amazed McCain was able to give himself any kind of chance at all.
The future is not what it seems today. If McCain was able to give himself a chance like this against a $600 million dollar man, think what a popular Republican can do in the future.
MrX on November 5, 2008 at 10:00 AM
Great point. Much agreed. America is bigger than any one politician. There will be another election in two years.
dedalus on November 5, 2008 at 10:01 AM
Do you think they will wear brown shirts, or something more stylish, updated for the times?
Maybe blue jumpsuits with a big red O on the chest?
Darksean on November 5, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Even the comments turned blue….
Right_of_Attila on November 5, 2008 at 10:02 AM
Yup. This is why OBama won. Bcs McCain was a RINO. We will watch another Carter administration tear up our beautiful country. I wonder who will come next to clean up the mess.
I’m more worried about Congressional races. If we get a Dem majority in Congress, we are really screwed. They’re the ones that control everything.
Look what a mess we’ve had in the last 4.
We need to purge the elitist fiscally irresponsible RINOS in our party. We scoffed Romney & Paul for their ideas, religion, you name it. But they would have served us better in this election that McCain did.
May we learn from our mistakes.
There will be a war folks. Over our right to govern ourselves without the Nanny State taking over.
It is not over.
