Congratulations, Obama

One of the last things Dean Barnett said to me was that, as best he could tell, Barack Obama is “a good guy and a decent man.” I don’t think he’d mind me telling you that, especially under the circumstances. It’s a testament to his generosity of spirit that even in the heat of a campaign, with every reason to think the worst of his opponent, Dean couldn’t help but give him the benefit of the doubt. That’s Barnett all over, and that’s what made him an indispensable man whom we’ve been forced, horrendously, to dispense with.
I offer that as comfort to those of you who have no faith in The One but who do have faith in, and abiding affection for, DB. My guess is he’d have handled the news tonight with the same magnanimity that distinguished all of his writing. So in that spirit, congratulations to Barry O on a race superbly run and to our country for not having let the wrong reasons deter it from making the wrong choice. I’ll never be a fan, but I swear I’ll never take a nutroots posture either in relishing his failures because it helps my party. Like it or not, he’s my president. As a great man once said, country first.

Oddly enough, with everything else, I do feel happy that a black man got elected president.
Maybe it’s just me wanting to feel happy over something, but in that sense, America did something right today.
I just pray that the America of our Founders is still around four years from now to save.

A great man indeed. I feel so bad for John. He doesn’t deserve this. I’m fine with Obama; I’ll actually wait until he messes up the country to be seriously against him. I’m with AP on that we should not behave like the other side did during the past eight years, starting on Inauguration Day. Country First should be one of McCain’s ultimate legacies to the GOP.

My dear friends at Hot Air,
For all too brief a time I had the pleasure of your company, commenting on one of the most remarkable websites in the country. Manly Rash was a force of nature: a contra-rotating whirlwind that someyimes unleased more damage than he did any good – even if it provided so many here with both laughs and heartburn.
I would like to thank Michell Malkin, Ed Morrissey and Allahpundit for putting up with my obnoxious silliness. Be assured, folks: deep down at heart I am every bit the pompous, preening, ass hat that you perceive me to be. And I am ever grateful for your tolerance and magnanimity.
It’s been a hoot, these past few months and I had the time of my life here. I threw my lot in with McCain because it was my desperate hope that America would redeem herself. I went so far as to bluff recklessly on a McCain victory – figuring that if the best happened, I’d be a hero. If the worst happened, I’d be a goat.
It was a 50/50 shot and I bent the ranch. I lost.
The time has come to move on. Per my wagers with other commentators, I will be departing Hot Air forever as of this post. I am especially grateful for all of your expressions of support and friendship. That meant so very much to me – more than you can begin to imagine. You are good people and I will miss you very much.
This is my last post on Hot Air.com
Good-bye. And God bless you all.
ManlyRash on November 4, 2008 at 11:43 PM
I am so disappointed, and I am trying not to be depressed. I do not want to act like the unhinged left, though, in their trashing of President Bush. Therefore, I will make an attempt to find the silver lining in this debacle.
I hope Obama’s election will finally heal any racial tension left in our country, on all sides. I hope blacks can now stop believing themselves victims ala the Jesse Jackson’s of this country and start feeling empowered.

Bradky on November 4, 2008 at 11:44 PM
Congrats, but don’t expect us to go along with your program sir.
One other thing, I hope this puts an end to the silliness that permeated this thread during the past few days, i.e., “McCain will win easily,” “McCain will win in a landslide,” etc. etc. Nothing wrong with being positive even when the results were inevitable (as I knew they would be when Rove conceded the other day that the hill was “too tall” for McCain to overcome), but to behave as if it were just not possible for McCain to lose Ohio, Virginia, Florida, and all the others, then pick up Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Iowa was the height of foolishness.
Next time the polls give us bad news, let’s not dismiss them so readily next time. They are reliable indicators of what will happen. This election certainly proved that.
Joe Pyne on November 4, 2008 at 11:44 PM
That is a thoroughly decent and correct sentiment. Nothing was more distasteful than listening to people insist that George W. Bush wasn’t their president. I may not agree with Obama and may think his abilities are wildly overrated but its vile to think he doesn’t want what he believes his best for his country.
alex342 on November 4, 2008 at 11:44 PM
What a sad day this is. It’s so hard to believe that so many people have turned against what has always made this country great. So many want it all handed to them. What ever happened to pride in doing a job well done? Pride in making your own way? Handouts used to frowned upon, and so many were embarrassed to use them. Now, people expect them.
StephC on November 4, 2008 at 11:44 PM
He’s not my president. He’ll always be the terrorist loving junior senator from the corrupt Chicago political machine to me.
Part of what made this country great just died a horrible death, to have this POS elected JUST BECAUSE HE LOOKS BLACK. So many people elected him due to racial guilt or because he “looks like me”. That is not a good reason for voting for president.
worlok on November 4, 2008 at 11:45 PM
My ongoing faith is in the founding principles of the American Republic and the inherent goodness of the American people.
Presidents come and presidents go. Some are good, some are bad some, are awful. Obama’s legacy is yet to be written. I am not optimistic, but I am hopeful that we will survive whatever damage he wreaks and make it through to the next cycle, and repeat in 2012 what we did in 1980.
I just hope the country is in better shape when Obama leaves in 4 years than it was when we kicked that idiot Jimmy Carter out in 1980.
I just know that we here at Hot Air and in conservative blogs and talk radio need to stick together, not give in to intimidation or leftist bully-boy tactics, and get our house in order for the next run.

I cannot be so magnanimous. History has shown that, whenever there is a clear path to totalitarianism, it is taken. Obama is a socialist, an anti-semite, and an anti-American (judging by his feeling that the Constitution is fundamentally flawed).
The electorate has made its decision. I just hope we can survive it.

Look, I agree with AP. We hated how much the nutroots had the BDS syndrome. Let’s not have an OBS syndrome. He is our president. Lets make it a battle of ideas, not personalities.
Let’s find ways to communicate conservative values to the common folk out there. They are blindly listening to the media. As far as I see it, the media is much more powerful than we think.

At the very least, it’s about time this country returned to solid fiscal policies. Welcome back the Robert Rubin regime. Either Warren Buffet or Larry Summers will soon receive a call to start planning an economic turn-around and set this country on a new course.
The failure of supply side policies over the last 8 years has created a massive federal deficit and $10 trillion debt that the country must start to address. But it’s not going to be easy.

Well, the good news is that the Republicans will have a much better chance of winning back the Congress in 2010. This embarrassment should motivate them to get their act together, not to mention inspire some new blood to run for office. Also, after the inevitable failures of Obama and the Democratic Congress, they won’t have McCain to blame (though of course they’ll still blame Bush). The American people will get a taste of socialism, which will renew their desire for candidates with the best ideas rather than the best image. This is an opportunity, folks. With some actual leadership and vision, the “conservatives” could very well pull this off. (The Republicans could start by instituting a preferential voting system in their primaries to prevent another McCain-like candidate.)

No congrats from me, if the media reported ANYthing remotely resembling the news when it came to Fannie/Freddie (of course I’m leaving out about two million other stories they should have covered but didn’t, but I’m confident that that story alone would have done it), we’d have a President-elect McCain in a landslide.
