Confessed moonbat sign-stealer resigns professorial post

Philip Busse just discovered the power of the blogosphere — by turning it on himself.  After bragging about his exploits in stealing McCain-Palin campaign signs, St. Olaf University invited its media professor to hit the road.  Local police also have some consequences in store for the former instructor:

Philip Busse, the St. Olaf College professor who admitted to stealing campaign signs in a national political blog read by millions, has resigned. …

Busse was also charged with misdemeanor theft after confessing to the Rice County Sheriff’s department that he took three McCain/Palin yard signs, said Sergeant Dave Stensrud of the Rice County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Stensrud, officers met with Busse at his residence last Friday after several community members complained about Busse’s essay on the Huffington Post, a national news Web site and blog. There, Stensrud said, Busse confessed that he was involved with the theft of three political yard signs. In his article, entitled “Confessions of a Lawn Sign Stealer,” Busse admits to taking up to eight McCain/Palin signs from a stretch of Highway 19 near St. Olaf College.

For his actions, Busse could face up to 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine, Stensrud said.

Three cheers for St. Olaf for demanding a high standard of public behavior from its staff.  They could just as easily have concluded that Busse had all the candlepower of a 30-year-old LED, too.  I’m not sure what Busse expected from confessing his crimes on the Huffington Post, but the media professor apparently didn’t think that people reading it might take offense.

Busse himself called the thefts “immature”, but couched it in terms of civil disobedience.  He wrote that stealing campaign signs was “one of the single most exhilarating and empowering political acts that I have ever done.”  Er, what?  Why not do something constructive, like door-knock or register voters?  Apparently, Busse doesn’t have the attention span for that.

This story hits home, literally, for me.  I’ve had two McCain signs stolen from my yard in the last two weeks, the second in broad daylight while I was out — and the First Mate was at home.  The third sign, which I picked up when I interviewed Patricia Heaton last week, has remained, along with the Norm Coleman sign that hasn’t budged since I placed it:

He must be a good media professor.

He knows that no one reads HuffPo, and that he would never get caught. Just dumb luck that someone managed to find out this time. I wonder what other crimes have been confessed on there…

Abby Adams on November 4, 2008 at 2:25 PM

I have had my McCain/Palin sign up for three weeks and no one has touched it. And I know a few of my neighbors are dems. The funny thing is that I am the only (along with my next door neighbor) has a sign in the front yard. And we are the only ones with bumper stickers.
Strange year…

As if stealing the signs will then confuse voters to vote for Obama….we aren’t on that level of stupid.

I’d be pissed if someone stole the signs from my yard. Too bad all of the McCain signs couldn’t be hooked up to a little electrical charge….that’d teach ‘em!

Philip Busse, the St. Olaf College professor who admitted to stealing campaign signs in a national political blog read by millions, has resigned.

Meh, what an Obama tool! Not to worry though, if THE LIGHT WORKER is elected I’m certain THE ONE will have a post in his cabinet for such an avid supporter…barf!

P.S. So Ed, you didn’t electrify your sings? ;-)

Liberty or Death on November 4, 2008 at 2:27 PM

Our sign got cut in half, presumably by a box cutter, the night after we put it up. Someone walked right up into the grass and hacked at it roughly. (BTW we are next door to a tiny school).

Anyway, we patched it up with a conspicuous amount of tape and put it right back in the same place with a handwritten message…Vandals: Leave Sign Alone. We Don’t Razor Yours.

It has been left alone ever since. And what’s more, traffic slows down to read the handwritten part. :)

Oh and Philip Busse? My middle finger is gesturing in your general direction.

RushBaby on November 4, 2008 at 2:27 PM

This is toooooo funny! A MEDIA professor totally out of touch with the modern media!

He probably thinks National Newspapers readers and TV News viewers are growing demographics.

I’m glad he confessed and got the boot. I’d like to know who stole my McCain signs….

I know academia well, and I’d love to see federal funding of higher ed slashed by, oh, say 90%. Of course St. Olaf is private, but even there tax money pays for students’ grants and interest on subsidized loans.

Instead of stealing signs, Professor Busse should have invited Ahmadinjad to speak in his class.

No jail time or fines for that, and all of the press reporting would have been 100% positive and complimentary.

Stupid professors.

Maybe you should move farther south. My home made sign has been up for weeks and there was an O rally about 200 yards up the street on Sat night with 40k attending according the local paper (in football stadium that only holds maybe 5,000). I saw lots of people snarling at it but it was never touched and it is still out there.

“Writing the essay was an opportunity to explore and talk about political speech and the desire that most of us have to express our politics — both in mature and immature ways, and sometimes a mix of the two,” Busse said in the e-mail. “I’m disappointed that most readers seem to have focused on the thefts, and not on the larger thoughts.”

In the article, Busse likened his thefts to an act of civil disobedience and said that stealing the signs was “one of the single most exhilarating and empowering political acts that I have ever done.”

Lost in his thoughts was the fact that, at the same time as he was empowering himself, he was denying others their own empowering freedom of speech.

What goes around comes around.

Bruno Strozek on November 4, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Some friends and I did that in high school. There was a teacher in our school who was a huge democrat(taught social studies) so the night before the election in 1984, we took about 30 Reagan Bush signs from wherever we could find them and put them on the school lawn in front of his classroom. Unfortunately for us the janitors come in early and cleared them out before the teacher could see them. took all the fun out of it.
You expect this out of high schoolers, but a college professor?

BTW: I’m sure that it’s been noted, but someone mentioned on a show last night that if Obama tried to get a job at the FBI or CIA, he’d be rejected because he couldn’t get security clearance. I find that more than a little unsettling.

Vote.

BuckeyeSam on November 4, 2008 at 2:38 PM

“one of the single most exhilarating and empowering political acts that I have ever done.”

For me, it is honoring all those who gave life or limb in order for me to be able to vote. Nothing can be more exhilarating or empowering than that. Good for the college and as for that so called professor, he should spend time in a cell meditating on what democracy and free speech mean.

rbj on November 4, 2008 at 2:38 PM

He ran the one of the weekly “alternative” papers for quite awhile in Portland, Oregon. You’ll never guess what political positions he took…

He is also the Executive Director of the “Northwest Institute for Social Change”. Unfortunately, although he has a law degree, he isn’t a member of the Oregon Bar, so we can’t file an ethics complaint against him.

Elizabetty on November 4, 2008 at 2:24 PM

My own experience, just having graduated in 2003, really wasn’t all that horrible. I think it’s important to get your children to understand politics and having their own views before they get to college. That way I was able to see through all the B.S. that some of my more liberal professors tried to spew at me.

Other than that, encourage them to go to both a liberal campus society meeting, and a conservative society meeting. It’ll be like night and day, and they should go running back to the conservatives. I did both, and during my time at the conservative society, a bunch of liberal kooks threw eggs at the window where we were meeting. That was enough to get me to forget them forever.

Sir Corky on November 4, 2008 at 2:44 PM

one of the single most exhilarating and empowering political acts that I have ever done.

An irony goldmine. Self-empowering, yeah; at the expense of the rights of others.

I’ve always found this reprehensible; but it just occurred to me how similar this is to the left’s bogeyman of book-burning/-banning. Because someone can’t bear the ideas of someone else, they’ll destroy the tangible expression of those ideas.

The difference is that sign-stealing actually happens!

Not much different here – well maybe a little. It’s a demographic thing, I feel, since the Orthodox have more kids and they don’t trust BHO in the least.
I’m in the oilpatch, and the smaller congregations are more politically mixed, since many of the members depend upon oil and gas.
We’ve had a couple of Jewish posters here over the past 6 months, by the way.

TexasJew on November 4, 2008 at 3:00 PM

Sign stealers work at night in the dark like the thieves they are. I’ve mentioned before that while running for office, I had seventy signs taken in one night. They were found in a wooded area with hundreds of others, all Republican.

The Republican party makes it very clear to all candidates not to steal signs, even when yours are taken. The Dems are real classy, and if they are now bragging about it they should do time.

Possibly; or maybe more like “I don’t have anything positive to offer, but I just denied the civil rights of someone who didn’t agree with me.” The Weather Underground could blow up that guy’s house, campus radicals can shout down conservatives so they can’t speak, and conservatives are the fascists?!?

They were talking last night on Fox about Obama’s proposed ‘civilian security force’. I got a shiver down my spine. They all pooh-poohed it as being a philosophically liberal ‘thousand points of light’ sort of thing, but with the over-the-top reactions of some of the far left, especially the college kids who are about to have an especially difficult time finding jobs (with their degrees in ‘________ studies’), I really worry he could be literally talking about his own SS/KGB/Brownshirt type organization. The Hopenchange Revolutionary Guard, maybe.

And while it’s just us talking — I worry that some on our side have gotten just as over-the-top crazy, and would be plum pickings for any conservative with a similar plan. We need to start policing our own on some of the hateful, vengeful and violent rhetoric. Words have a way of becoming actions. /btw

Well, I admit that I’ve been tempted to swerve over onto the berm and flatten a couple of Obama signs, but unlike Professor Moonbat, I’m mature enough to fight down my worst juvenile impulses. We’ve had two signs stolen this year. Some pizza restaurant in Detroit was trading free pizzas for McCain signs, so it’s pretty flagrant here in Michigan.

I can’t think of an institution that is farther Left than academia. Anyone?

Academia is to the left of the communist party.

Not a clue.
The national Librarian organizations are practically Marxist, I have heard.
Of course, what about k-12 education? That NEA is a disgrace…

I never had a sign stolen. However, I gave one of my signs to a friend who’s sign was stolen. He is a legal immigrant from Africa that doesn’t want our great country to turn into the one he left. Unfortunately, his neighbors called him a fake n****r for daring to support the white guy.
