Anti-Semitism rising in Europe

Pew Research issued a study last week that mostly got buried under all of the election polling, but which may have significant impact on Western foreign policy over the next several years.  In the extract, Pew notes that anti-Semitism has risen substantially over the past four years in Europe.  With the exception of the UK, the major EU nations have all gotten more hostile to Jews in general, and Israel in particular:

A disturbing new trend is emerging across Europe. Anti-Semitism and xenophobia are on the rise. A growing minority of citizens in several European countries holds unfavorable opinions of Jews. Negative views of Israel, sympathy with the Palestinian cause, rising anti-Americanism, and a backlash against globalization and immigration all play a role in this trend.

Research by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project, as well as polls by the Anti-Defamation League, make clear that anti-Jewish sentiments are increasing. Granted, the breadth of European anti-Semitism should not be overstated. This rise in negative attitudes toward Jews has for the most part been modest, and anti-Jewish sentiments in Europe remain much less common than anti-Muslim views.

Pew tries to moderate the impact of its own findings by noting that Europe hasn’t gotten as bad as Jordan and Egypt.  That’s hardly a tough bar to clear, however, since anti-Semitism in those countries run around 95%.  I suppose 46% in Spain looks better than that, but not by much — and neither does Poland’s 36%, Russia’s 34%, nor German’s 25%.   All of these represent sharp increases; Spain’s rate more than doubled during this four-year period.

In comparison, the Anglosphere seems much more tolerant.  Anti-Semitism in the US runs at just 7%, somewhat lower than in 2004.  The UK holds at 9%, the same level as 2004, although it had dropped to 7% in 2005.

What does this mean for foreign policy?  It will make the US and the UK more isolated in its support for Israel, for one thing.  The rising hostility towards Jews and Israel may push Europe much closer to the mullahs in Iran, kneecapping our ability to contain the Iranian nuclear threat.  The only thing keeping that from happening now is the fear in other Arab nations about the Iranians going nuclear.

Pew also tries pulling a little moral-equivalency sleight of hand at the end of its excerpt:

Moreover, rising anti-Jewish views are part of a broader pattern of increasing xenophobia; European attitudes toward Muslims have also turned more negative over the last few years.

I don’t recall the Jews terrorizing Madrid, London, Beslan, or Moscow.  I don’t recall Israel rising up to demand the death of European editors and publishers after printing cartoons criticizing Jews.  The Jews in France didn’t conduct nightly riots in the banlieus and burn hundreds of cars every night.  If Muslims have seen a rise in negative attitudes in Europe, it’s not exactly an irrational reaction, and it’s hardly equivalent to anti-Semitism on a continent that saw mankind’s worst genocide on Jews within some of our lifetimes.

I think hate in general is on the rise.

sammypants on November 4, 2008 at 9:45 AM

A phobia is an irrational fear of something, as Ed says.

Thus, there is no such thing as Islamaphobia. A fear of Islamism is entirely rational and healthy.

Duh.

fogw on November 4, 2008 at 9:45 AM

The most significant question though — why?

Republigal on November 4, 2008 at 9:47 AM

It’s the rise of liberalism. Liberals hate Israel. Always have.

I wonder if the increase of anti semitism in Europe could have something to do with the increase in the number of Muslim migrants and refugee’s settling there? especially in countries like France, Holland, and Germany.

drjohn on November 4, 2008 at 9:51 AM

jp said, “its rising in the US too, we are about to elect Barack Obama.”

Yep. And the sad thing is, many of the Jews in America refuse to believe it. It’s like the Stockholm syndrome extending to politicians who don’t have their best interests in mind. My Jewish friends refuse to believe that Obama is more sympathetic towards the Palestinians. They act as if *I’m* the one insulting them to suggest such a thing.

Israel is about to be put in a corner. If Obama gets elected (no friend of Israel no matter how much he pretends), Europe is more and more indifferent if not hostile to them, the UN is against them….. Israel is going to find itself in a desperate situation and will strike Iran first in the near future me thinks.

Yakko77 on November 4, 2008 at 9:52 AM

This is a non-surprising result, given Europe’s (particularly Western EU) proclivity to secular leftism. The left is growing increasingly antagonistic towards Isreal… and WHAT IS surprising is that American Liberal Jews don’t even know it… yet.

jp on November 4, 2008 at 9:59 AM

Could this help explain Obama’s apparent success in Europe? When people want change, they have to have an “enemy” to help justify their “cause”. They are scared witless of the Muslims, so, it’s the Jews – again.

OldEnglish on November 4, 2008 at 10:00 AM

Isn’t it usually as a population feels more negative, has worse economic conditions there is a rise in hate against other groups. People are always looking for someone to blame for their troubles.
If Obama is elected President and the economy, international situations and other things go further negative expect to see a sharp rise in racism in America.

originalpechanga on November 4, 2008 at 10:01 AM

The most significant question though — why?

Guilt, among other things. They have projected their feelings onto the Israelis, now that they can pretend that the Israeli treatment of the Palestinians is just like their treatment of the Jews.

Then again, European anti-Semitism never really died. It just went into hiding for about twenty years.

Too many Jews have a suicidal streak that compels them to support liberal, “good” agendas — such as electing a black president, or supporting a German chancellor who boosted the economy — even when evil results.

I’ve been around such people all my life. They will wring their hands and organize mild protests when Osama Obama sells Israel down the river.

Flea on November 4, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Why would this be surprising? They just had a big pro-Obama rally…

q2600 on November 4, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Well France has very large migrant Muslim population from places like Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, and Palestine. Germany uses a lot of guest labourers from the middle east and Turkey. The Netherlands accepts a lot of Muslim refugees and people seeking political asylum (often Islamic extremists from places like Jordan who would have been thrown into prison if they had stayed there) and even England has a growing migrant and refugee population from places like Pakistan.

Is it any wonder that anti semitism is on the rise in Europe with all these Islamic migrants bringing there prejudices and backward beliefs with them.

Conduct study to find reasons for rising anti-semitism. Find that it has to do with large number and increasing vocality if Muslims, often 2nd or 3rd generation. Gulp and suppress findings.

If that’s strong for your taste, you’re free to call me a fire-breather. It’s just that a duly elected government in a duly elected democracy gets more hate than the totalitarian statist middle-eastern regimes. If there was any sense of justice in this world, Obama won’t be elected. The fact that this is happening is enough to sicken any man with any sense of decency.

Europeans have a legacy of the Holocaust and collective responsibility for it. And the dirty little secret is that a hell of a lot of Europeans are glad there are so few Jews around now. We’ve had the most hurricanes and earthquakes in 20 years, multiple wars, famines, and pestilences. Genocides, crashing markets and rumors of integrated currencies. Israel is being surrounded. We have a potential, dare I say it, “False Prophet” close to becoming POTUS. What is Russia doing? Look at government and social movements in Europe. This stuff looks biblical to me. Fortunata on November 4, 2008 at 10:38 AM

It sure is. When I was in Europe, the tour guides insisted on telling us how many Jews died from their cities in the Holocaust. There was more than a bit of disgust with my tour guides (Israeli) and with the rest of us. In Canada, my Grandpa was telling a story to a bunch of family members about how much money he saved doing something or other and some stranger asked sneeringly, “Are you all Jews?” An in-law of my family is extremely anti-Semitic. People won’t talk to me when they find out that I’ve been to Israel a few times and that I email Israeli friends all the time.

That they were, until recently, the welfare queens of the EU — every public work I see is paid for by EU money, the Greeks don’t have a large enough tax base to pay for anything. LOL! Sorry for the lecture. :p

Fortunata on November 4, 2008 at 10:48 AM

Good morning. I think the picture posted with this story is probably misleading-I doubt very much that the most serious threats to the Jews in Europe are coming from the white, “Christian”, “neo-Nazi” fringes. The population of Europe has been swarmed with an import of Muslims who are infinitely more antisemitic than any native-born Europeans since the end of WWII. The study should have (or maybe it did, I haven’t read the whole thing) identified the religion or country of origin of the Europeans professing the most virulently antisemtic attitudes. I bet 9/10 are Muslim immigrants.

WriterMom on November 4, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Soros has an explanation:

At a Jewish forum in New York City, Soros partially attributed a recent resurgence of antisemitism to the policies of Israel and the United States, and to successful Jews such as himself:

There is a resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe. The policies of the Bush administration and the Sharon administration contribute to that. It’s not specifically anti-Semitism, but it does manifest itself in anti-Semitism as well. I’m critical of those policies… If we change that direction, then anti-Semitism also will diminish. I can’t see how one could confront it directly… I’m also very concerned about my own role because the new anti-Semitism holds that the Jews rule the world… As an unintended consequence of my actions… I also contribute to that image.[43]

TheBigOldDog on November 4, 2008 at 10:50 AM

Gee-I wonder why attitudes in Europe could have possibly changed to ‘negative’ in the past few years. Let’s see-bombings? Forcing sharia up the European wazooo? Punitive jizyah payments? Threats of violence on the part of YOOOTS? Despicable arranged marriages between British immigrant minors and folks back at home in Pakistan?

right2bright on November 4, 2008 at 10:55 AM

YellowDawg,

I’m not suggesting that white Europeans are in love with the Jews-far from it. But, I believe that the more worrying Jew-hatred comes from the Muslim immigrants in Europe-egged on by the rabidly anti-Israel policies of their governments. Europe is soaked with blood, but it’s Muslims who are beating Jews to death (France), beating up Jewish teenagers (UK) not ‘neo-Nazis’. The Jew-haters deserve each other.
