Anti-Semitism rising in Europe

Pew Research issued a study last week that mostly got buried under all of the election polling, but which may have significant impact on Western foreign policy over the next several years. In the extract, Pew notes that anti-Semitism has risen substantially over the past four years in Europe. With the exception of the UK, the major EU nations have all gotten more hostile to Jews in general, and Israel in particular:
A disturbing new trend is emerging across Europe. Anti-Semitism and xenophobia are on the rise. A growing minority of citizens in several European countries holds unfavorable opinions of Jews. Negative views of Israel, sympathy with the Palestinian cause, rising anti-Americanism, and a backlash against globalization and immigration all play a role in this trend.
Research by the Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Project, as well as polls by the Anti-Defamation League, make clear that anti-Jewish sentiments are increasing. Granted, the breadth of European anti-Semitism should not be overstated. This rise in negative attitudes toward Jews has for the most part been modest, and anti-Jewish sentiments in Europe remain much less common than anti-Muslim views.
Pew tries to moderate the impact of its own findings by noting that Europe hasn’t gotten as bad as Jordan and Egypt. That’s hardly a tough bar to clear, however, since anti-Semitism in those countries run around 95%. I suppose 46% in Spain looks better than that, but not by much — and neither does Poland’s 36%, Russia’s 34%, nor German’s 25%. All of these represent sharp increases; Spain’s rate more than doubled during this four-year period.
In comparison, the Anglosphere seems much more tolerant. Anti-Semitism in the US runs at just 7%, somewhat lower than in 2004. The UK holds at 9%, the same level as 2004, although it had dropped to 7% in 2005.
What does this mean for foreign policy? It will make the US and the UK more isolated in its support for Israel, for one thing. The rising hostility towards Jews and Israel may push Europe much closer to the mullahs in Iran, kneecapping our ability to contain the Iranian nuclear threat. The only thing keeping that from happening now is the fear in other Arab nations about the Iranians going nuclear.
Pew also tries pulling a little moral-equivalency sleight of hand at the end of its excerpt:
Moreover, rising anti-Jewish views are part of a broader pattern of increasing xenophobia; European attitudes toward Muslims have also turned more negative over the last few years.
I don’t recall the Jews terrorizing Madrid, London, Beslan, or Moscow. I don’t recall Israel rising up to demand the death of European editors and publishers after printing cartoons criticizing Jews. The Jews in France didn’t conduct nightly riots in the banlieus and burn hundreds of cars every night. If Muslims have seen a rise in negative attitudes in Europe, it’s not exactly an irrational reaction, and it’s hardly equivalent to anti-Semitism on a continent that saw mankind’s worst genocide on Jews within some of our lifetimes.

I wish that were true, I wish that were true. Unfortunately, the Europeans are quite good at hating Jews with or without the Muslim population.

The only people in more trouble than us conservatives are us Jooos (”us” in spirit, anyway) if we get the Reign of the Socialist Triumvirate, Obama-Reid-Pelosi.

No doubt, Europe has a unique position in terms of its history of Jew-hatred and murder. But I still believe that the overt episodes of violence, and the overt declarations of hatred toward Jews, are coming from the Muslim population more than the secular, ‘post-modern’, white Europeans.

Hey isn’t Ariana Huffington from Greece as well?

I wish I understood the psychological underpinning of it. I really do. To me, it seems completely insane.

Yes, unfortunately the buggering little boys has some side effects.
YellowDawg on November 4, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Ed, thanks for pointing out this very important issue. This is a continual effort on the part of the Muslims to re-invent themselves as the “new Jews”, and to minimize and ridicule Jewish history, suffering and the Holocaust. They are constantly subverting Jewish imagery for their own nefarious purpose and whine-a-thons, so thank for mentioning this most infuriating thing.

O’Bama is no friend of Israel. It will get much hotter in the Middle East. Israel will probably have to go it alone

I blame that awful Zohan movie.

I believe Ariana is from Greece. I cannot stand that witch. She is vile. Is funny that I knew her hubby was gay for a few years before it came out. Some think that it was a surprise to her. But, she knew he was. It was a marriage of convenience. Money can seal a deal. Is why I was weary of working and meeting famous people. They always seemed to have an agenda. Fake. She should go back to her own Country and spew her hate and ignorance there.

No, Obama is no friend of Israel. This has been my biggest fear. I pray silently all the time that he doesn’t win. He is a evil man. And if he does (heaven forbid) We have to have a Revolution. I hate thinking like this. But, it will be needed. He will destroy Israel. And others are waiting to help him to destroy US.
sheebe on November 4, 2008 at 11:12 AM
Israel will be the issue that makes the Dems implode.Who will Obama side with? His Anti Israel Anti Semite Pals or the Leftist Jewish Bolsheviks who helped get him elected? Fineman,Joe Klein, Paul Krugman , Keith Olbermann , John Liebowitz Stewart etc etc?

I’m already too depressed this morning even though I voted. And I will be in Prague in 72 hours, I hope that ex communist nations are not as Jew hating ad Western Europe. I am going to wear my IDF T-Shirt under my shirt.
Hilts on November 4, 2008 at 11:35 AM
Klein and Olbermann are no friends of Israel, get that straight.
Hilts on November 4, 2008 at 11:36 AM
Antisemitism never left Europe what I fear it is coming here. We might end up with an antisemitic President.
Jdripper on November 4, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Anti-Semitism has always been there however its been depressed by their governments. Also, with BHO (and his Palestinian allies) as our new socialist overlords, I’m sure they feel comfortable enough to slither from beneath their rocks and bask in the BHO glory.

In the 60’s when Israel carried out a pre-emptive attack, the factory where my father was working was cheering on the Israelis, this was in Yorkshire in England. Many of us are still doing that.
And like many I am disgusted with the Muslims trying to paint themelves as the new Jews, its ridiculous, yet idiots fall for it as we have many in Europe and if Obama wins you will be going down the same road as we are and I have lost the place that I was intending to move to.
There are differences between the Americans and the USA, but you are what we should have become if we had not been so stupid to start a senseless war in 1914 which effectively destroyed any pride in our nations and our civilisation and which was further eroded by the acts of a load of madmen in 1936 to 1945. So when I see Americans talk about us being anti-semite I feel sadness over the fact that you can say and think that, I for one am no Jew but if I was in my 20’s and knowing what I do now I would be proud to volunteer for the IDF.
And I wonder just how many of these people saying things about Europe are really lefties stirring up trouble between us, as far as I am concerned those Americans are not the same Americans who crossed the Rhine in flimsy wooden boats to save British soldiers trapped ar Arnham, they were true Americans and people that I have the upmost respect for.
TrueBrit on November 4, 2008 at 11:58 AM
I meant Europeans and the USA, sorry for the typo
TrueBrit on November 4, 2008 at 11:59 AM
Obama is a friend to Jews. I’m sure he’ll allow the few remaining Jews from Iran nuked Israel to come to the USA to get medical treatment for their radiation injuries.

TrueBrit on November 4, 2008 at 12:52 PM
Considering Europe’s history, it’s surprising that it has taken this long for the levels to get back to this height. And Jews support Obama why?

Look at what’s happening to that paragon of liberal democracy, Sweden. The message here is disturbingly similar:

Ed,
This PEW Research Poll is meaningless without looking at the larger picture. There have been physical attacks against Gentiles and Jews (i.e. infidels) by Muslims all over Europe.
The increase in ‘xenophobia’ is a good thing as it is actually a resurgence of old-fashioned patriotism and the instinct for self-preservation and defense of civillisation. It is not related to the Judeophobia and dislike of Israel which is the province of transnational leftists (like the EU) and Islamic jihadists.
By posting this in a contextless and clueless way you are only encouraging your readers to vent their own resentments against Europeans and many have taken the bait. It is as befuddled as your post about Rodwan Nakshabandi which ignores and covers up the increasing Islamisation of your home state of Minnesota (and by extension Michigan) by focusing on a heroic individual instead of larger trends.

The US has only “stopped” hating Jews less than 60 years ago.

Good job right4life, they have a public reading of that at Touro Synagogue every year. To my compatriot TrueBrit, buck up, sir. The nation that gave us Sir Winston and Lady Thatcher can yet bring forth another leader with spine. I would rather see Churchill on our dime than FDR.

Wasn’t Churchill’s mother *gasp* an American. It reminds me that when Britain and America stand together, we are formidible beyond belief.

Nazis and Islamic militants have been allies since the 1930’s.
The primal fascist was Mohammad, the pedophile warlord.
profitsbeard on November 4, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Yeah, tell that to my mother who had to put up with jewish quotas when trying to get into college. And you bring a source from 1790? Try American pop culture from the 1920s. Try the riots in Detriot in 1943.
Dont get me wrong, the US has been great to the Jews, but only Jews are Jews.
EconomicPirate on November 4, 2008 at 8:03 PM
cry me a river boo hoo. there are quotas on jews, white people, asians, NOW, moron.
go to the university of tehran if you don’t like it here.
right4life on November 4, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Yes sir, and anti-semitism is rising in the rest of the world too. This is very sad, but no surprise. How can I say that? Because hate for the Jewish people was predicted long long ago. Wanna know the future? Here’s how it’s going to go down. The Bible lays out the events.
There are two BIG wars coming:
1. The first one is the Gog and Magog War described in Ezekiel 38-39. Russia, Iran, and the Arabs will launch an attack on Israel to destroy her. Watch the ‘Epicenter DVD’ by Joel Rosenberg for a great explanation on this prophecy. Here’s the Epicenter Trailer. I agree with everything in that DVD. I happen disagree with Joel’s views on Iraq and Bible prophecy, but Joel loves the Lord and he definitely has the Gog-Magog War right. Watch his DVD. Oh, by the way, Russia, Iran, and the Arabs are demolished!
2. The second war (after Gog-Magog War) is the War of Armageddon because of the location where the nations assemble themselves before attacking. Why this war is important, is because God Himself, Jesus Christ, will return and fight for Israel against the attacking nations. In preparation for Christ’s return, God will lead ALL the armies of the earth to the Middle East where they will surround Jerusalem:
“Behold, the day of the LORD cometh … I (GOD) will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle.” Zechariah 14:2-4
“And he (GOD) gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon (or “Megiddo”).” Revelation 16:16
Notice carefully that Revelation 16:16 refers to Armageddon as a place, not an event. Armageddon just means Megiddo. So what and where is Megiddo? It is a huge plain in Israel, about 60 miles north of Jerusalem, ideal for amassing armies. This vast plains area is the location large armies will camp out in preparation for an attack on Jerusalem. The Antichrist will mobilize armies from all nations of the world to annihilate the Jewish race. Thing is, the armies on the planet will be gathered, under the guise to eliminate Israel. In reality, it is Satan tricking everyone to gather in one place to fight Jesus when he returns. Read Revelation. He loses. Just when it looks hopeless for Israel, Jesus will come in judgment, destroying those gathered at Armageddon, ending this horrific time, and setting up His Kingdom on earth.
That’s it in a nutshell. Ever wonder where world events are leading us? Well, now you know.
