Video: Peggy Noonan votin’ for … McCain

After weeks of suspense, she finally declares at around 4:10. I honestly don’t get it. After all the praise for The One’s coolness and supposed eloquence and passages like this about the ‘Cuda, she’s going Republican anyway?

In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It’s no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.

Her last column declared “the imminent arrival of a new liberal moment.” Presumably this is her small way of standing athwart history yelling “stop.”

The vulgarization of politics.

Like “99 Problems but a B*tch Ain’t One” blared at the BMObama victorious entrance to the party after the Iowa caucuses?

Like BO flipping the bird at Hillary, and now at McCain?

How tragic that Noonan’s CDS kept her from noticing that vulgarization of politics 10 months ago. What a dumb, whiny, beyotch.

Peggy’s kind of strange, I always wondered what color the sky was in her world after reading her column…..But maybe we’re missing the point, maybe there are many who really, REALLY wanted to love Baracky, but in the end couldn’t bring themselves to swallow the kool-aid.

anniekc on November 3, 2008 at 4:36 PM

I used to love reading anything Peggy Noonan wrote. She has a real gift for language. I always thought her being on MSNBC was an odd choice for her though.

Her attacking Sarah Palin constantly and with such bitterness and anger was shocking to me. Has she ever spoken or dealt with the Governor?

Every time a person I like, whether Hollywood actor or writer, attack my views or political beliefs, leaves me with no choice. I can no longer financially support their movies or TV shows or buy their books or go to any personal appearances.I wish they would just shut up and sing, to paraphrase Laura Ingraham.

ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 4:44 PM

Despite my fellow countrymen I think McCain has this one locked… in my office here in Canada there’s talk of the “racist mentality” which would prevent a Black man becoming president… stupid really since I can guarantee all of you that more people will vote for Obama because they like his smile than people who won’t because he’s black.

I can’t wait to see Hollywood realize (once again) how little anyone cares what they think! :D

Trapped In Canada on November 3, 2008 at 4:45 PM

Ahah.

Hannity just had Lewis the Liberal on his show, and Lewis the Liberal said Hannity won their bet.

Hannity bet him two months ago that before the election, Lewis the Liberal would see that McCain was a better candidate. Lewis the Liberal voted for McCain in Missouri, because he’s a dreamer… he’s making middle class income, but he has dreams of making more… and only McCain can offer him that.

I was floored.

HornetSting on November 3, 2008 at 4:48 PM

Trust me….neither Noonan nor Frum will vote for McCain/Palin when the time comes. I’ll never forgive her for what she did to Sarah.

What did she (and Frum, Brooks, et. al.) do to her except point the obvious: that she does not possess the requisite acumen to serve as president? Is it possible to be a genuine conservative and also want the spokesperson for conservatism in America to articulate its principles well and have unimpeachable qualifications? Or does that necessarily make you a liberal, RINO, elitist out-of-touch assh*? Have you considered that the reason we’re even facing the prospect of a Democratic president and congress is that we’ve had an outrageously inarticulate and too often incompetent chief exec for the past eight years?

alex342 on November 3, 2008 at 4:49 PM

An Obama election will be a disaster for America. We ould be going to Hell in a handbasket.

I once thought so highly of Peggy Noonan. I was so sad to find, during this election, that she is just another elitist who has only contempt for those of us in the real world. I emailed her a few weeks back and told her I would no longer read anything she writes and was disappointed to discover that she is an elitist. I’m sure my opinion means nothing to her, but it felt good just to let her know.
What a wasted talent.

americanpatriot on November 3, 2008 at 4:51 PM

more good news:

the youth myth :

Since the 1972 election, after the adoption of the 26th Amendment lowering the voting age to 18, we regularly hear that this will be the year that “young voters” will make the difference. And just as regularly, young voters fail to show up at the polls in the numbers predicted.

Will 2008 be any different? Civitas discussed that possibility in an earlier analysis The Myth of the Young Voter. With “One Stop” and absentee voting in full swing Civitas was able to do an analysis of early voting as of Thursday, October 30. The facts say that this year is not any different than in elections past. Young voters continue to underperform in turnout relative to their percentage of registration

This is election eve however and there are plenty of issues of substance, such as the coal story that NEED to be covered. Yet with this news, as sad it is, it is nothing but a distraction from the real issues.

clemycali on November 3, 2008 at 4:57 PM

more good news:

While young voters make up 11 percent of registration they represent only 9 percent of turnout to date – the exact same percentages they were in 2004. Despite the intense media focus on young voters this year and the efforts of many campaigns to motivate young voters, they are not turning out in any higher percentages than before.

In addition, young voters (18-25) are underrepresented in the turnout of all three major parties.

How come last week Obama went to see his grandmother after “hip replacement surgery” and now we find out she died of cancer? Is it just me or is there a disconnect in the story here?

catlady on November 3, 2008 at 4:58 PM

But do you know a network where the coal thing is on the air? I don’t know one. Not evan on Fox. But I bet the grandma’s death is going to be everywhere.

I have no idea what the networks are doing, i haven’t watching. I usually get my news from various websites and watch Fox. But the national media hasn’t allowed anything to stick to Obama, it is the local media I am concerned with. i am sure some of them are picking up on this story because it hits home and the head of the coal association is out there slamming Obama.

Peggy Noonan says one thing on camera and then immediately says something else off camera, which was caught through an open mike. Now here she is telling the suckers’ one thing on camera after she spent weeks doing her level best to sabotage the election in Obama’s favour.

Why exactly should we believe a word she says now? I would ask how stupid does she think conservatives are, but the details of her criticism of Sarah Palin make it clear what she thinks of average people. Anyone who supports a man such as Barack Obama is either NOT a conservative or NOT particularly intelligent.

In the end the Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It’s no good, not for conservatism and not for the country. And yes, it is a mark against John McCain, against his judgment and idealism.

Yes indeed. God forbid ordinary Americans should take an active role in their own governance, everyone knows that is the role of our betters.

It isn’t just liberals, it must be the water in DC. People get in that ratsnest and start to think they really are better than the peasants out in flyover America regardless of their political beliefs. “New vulgarization” indeed.

johnsteele on November 3, 2008 at 5:33 PM

Memo to Noonan: It’s not Palin’s fault that American politics got so vulgar. Have you been paying attention to the last 8 years of BDS? Hello McFly? Lay off Palin and take a chill pill. Society hit a downward spiral, and blaming one person isn’t helping.

I used to really love Peggy Noonan. I guess a part of me still does. But never in all the years I’ve been politically aware have I ever been so utterly aware of the elitist in both parties. I’m VERY used to seeing it on the left, but not so much on the right.
Both parties have their share of crazy fringies on the left AND the right (more on the left).
And they in many ways come full circle and join hands.
The same can be said for each sides elitists.

Lost a bit for Noonan on this election. She sounded very much like the elitist that I cant stand. And at times like Barry O, she came off like she was just enjoying the sound of her own voice too much.
Put your champagne glass down peggy (and your nose as well) and get out from the cocktail circuit and meet some real people for a change.

Nothing but an expert at self promotion. She’s cemented her cred with the press by helping Obama, and now she says she’ll vote mccain so they can have her on as the designated “conservative voice”.

She made her career by allowing the press to credit her writing (speeches are never written by one person) for Reagan’s popularity – instead of his policies.

I still like Hitchens very much. It is no surprise that he would not endorse McCain. I think it had more to do with left over nineteen seventies personal dislike for McCain than anything. Hitchens is, from understanding, a Trotskyist–not a classical liberal. His antipathy towards Islamo-fascism, religio-fascism drives him. Once Obama started extolling on how he was going to amp it up in Afghanistan and start bombing Pakistan, that sealed the deal with Hitchens. You wait and watch, Hitchens will be all over Obama like stink on poop when Obama starts acting namby-pamby regarding these actions he promised the public while campaigning.

Hitchens is still good people and good American when it comes right down to it.

I find most of the so-called “conservative” pundits wearisome, and save for George Will and Charles Krauthammer, their writing comes off as pedestrian. While Peggy was remotely interesting in 2004 and during the 2008 primaries, I do believe she has lost her relevance (and perhaps her moorings) to the conservative movement. No matter who wins, I see a new wave of writers/thinkers spearheading the renewed conservative movement. I say to Noonan and Co., “Time to move over and move on…”

Frum’s comments were heartbreaking to me. He was one of my favorite conservative thinkers. Brooks, Noonan, Will, Parker I never cared for much. Especially Brooks and Noonan, both seemed like Intellectual Conservatives who wrote about conservatism more than they felt it in their hearts. Frum I do believe is a true believer but he had this condescending tone to Religous and Libertarian conservatives. His main beef with Sarah Palin, no matter his excuses, was that she does not travel in his circles. she was nor part of the ruling class. He had the nerve to criticize her as a detriment to the movement, when he was one of Bush’s biggest apologists for all his deficit spending, mismanagement of the Iraq War and lack of Border Security. He helped dig the hole Republicans are in today and really has no place to tell us which direction we should be headed.

as for great conservative thinkers, there are plenty to carry the standard. Jonah Goldberg is my favorite. there is of course Charles Krauthammer and Victor Davis Hansen as well. I also like Joshua Muravchik.

Good conservative writers and believers articulate ideas that can belong to everyone, not just the elites. I don’t like elitists on either side, but especially the right.

What happened to “Tito the Builder”? Now there’s a thinker!

I just don’t buy that. I admire Palin in many respects and wish her well but here’s the difference, in my humble opinion, between her and Ronald Reagan:

The media was wrong to characterize him as ignorant because he had a lifelong interest in policy and foreign policy in particular as evidenced by his writings and radio program before becoming president. He had thought long and hard about those things beforehand. No-one would had to give him a crash course on world affairs during the 1980 campaign. The same can be said for Margaret Thatcher. Whatever her positive qualities, the same cannot be said for Palin. It has nothing to do with “turning in the right circles”. I think a lot of people are guilty of condemning certain writers because they turn in the wrong circles.

Yes, I like Victor Davis Hanson as well. Bill Whittle and Mark Steyn are also exceptional writers.

She is an idiot. When McCain/Palin win, I hope they diss her for 4 years.

Usually stay out of comments, but I’ve got to chime in.

Noonan – this reminds me of her NBC appearance at the VP debate. She gushed over Palin and totally threw Brain Williams. I think what’s happening is that she’s trying to serve two masters; she’s an MSNBC dweller and cannot get on FOX if her life depended on it, so she has to be a straw Republican to keep the gig. But when that mentality bleeds over into the real world, her WSJ columns, she kills her relevancy with the her base. I think the last few columns have shown she’s melting down. First, she calls out her own readers, (”come get me, copper”), because we think she’s turned into the female Brooks. Then, she follows it up with a nondescript plea to “stop” and then a resignation to the liberal thugocracy. It’s honestly sad.

Hitchens – he’s still one of my favorites by a mile, but keep two things in mind. First, Palin most likely reminds him of his brother who’s a vocal Christian in the UK. That alone stops him for voting for McCain. Second, his endorsement of Obama is not about Pakistan, but because Obama was a pupil of Edward Said, one of the few people Hitchens admired. Hitchens has a different insight into Obama that he won’t write about because he knows it would have been used against The One. All the people surrounding Barry, save for Wright, are all people Hitchens knows quite well and in some cases personally. Hitch knew Obama was a socialist many moons ago, because he still sees himself as one. So for Hitch, Obama could be the best of both worlds if Barry has some foreign policy backbone. When that turns out not to be the case, Hitch will knife him. Right now, the last thing he wants to see is a VP Palin. I am surprised he didn’t give her some kudos over Trig, because Hitch is a quiet but staunch pro-lifer.
