Video of Obama, coal bankruptcy

posted at 8:30 am on November 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Yesterday, we featured the audio, and today, we have the 4-minute video clip of Barack Obama talking about bankrupting new coal plants in the US. Obama complained yesterday that his comments got taken out of context. Here we have the entire answer on coal, and the full context really doesn’t help Obama:

This still consists of Obama sending “price signals” that discourage the use of coal. He does say that getting rid of coal altogether is an illusion, but he’s obviously opposed to expanding its use or even keeping it at current levels. He wants to heavily fine coal operators in order to get “billions” for R&D on alternatives, which will send the coal industry reeling and energy prices skyrocketing, as Obama himself pledges later in the same interview.

Yesterday, Sarah Palin demanded to know why the San Francisco Chronicle sat on this story for so long.  The Chronicle responded by noting that the video has been available on their website since January 17th of this year.  However, the Chronicle never reported on these quotes from Obama, and these statements certainly seem noteworthy enough to include in any look at Obama’s policies on energy.

Even more oddly, they never provided a transcript of the interview, an almost automatic step for any meeting between national political candidates and the editors of a newspaper.  Why didn’t the Chronicle transcribe their meeting in the nine months between then and now?  Did they realize how damaging this could be to Obama’s hopes in the middle of the primaries and chose to quietly shelve the interview?

I work in the power industry. Primarily coal burning power plants. I just wonder how many of the union members who work at these plants like Obama’s idea.

Of course, we could always just shut them down because they are too expensive to operate/modify. Of course, that would open the door to nationalizing the power industry.

Prepare for black outs – or rolling black-outs.

You were being sarcastic when you asked that, right?
Of course they knew how damaging…I will bet there will be dozens of these “interviews” pop up over the next several weeks.
And, shame on McCain’s people for not finding every interview he has ever given. Every one should have been reseached.
And shame on Hannity for sitting there last night and taking credit, he lamely tried to say who it was, but he couldn’t resist the praise and shut his mouth and basked in his glory…what a fool he was.

How many nuclear waste accidents/deaths have there been in Europe since they went nuclear? How many here? As most solutions are simple, this is, too. Just turn Iran into a nuclear storage facility. Problem solved.

Jarhead68 on November 3, 2008 at 8:58 AM

I am shocked that none of the major newspapers in NYC have this on the front page. It should read, “OBAMA to Coal Industry, DROP DEAD!!!”
Usually the NY Post would have had that on its cover. Don’t they even read the Drudgereport? I mean, you could argue that they don’t read every rightwing blog, but drudge had it almost all day, surely in time to get on the front page, rather than voter suppression headlines heralding an Obama victory.
The other thing from this story is that Obama will also do his best to kill the livestock industry under his concern for global warming. The man should be president of Zimbabwe not the USA,his policies will result in the same disaster as Mugabe, if God forbid, Obama were elected.

eaglewingz08 on November 3, 2008 at 8:59 AM

So why did a newspaper sit so damn long on this story until now?

Here is a clue: San Francisco Chronicle!!!

How much you want to bet this rag was under direct orders from Empresses Pelosi to make sure this information did not see the light of day?

I swear, San Francisco shouldn’t even be considered part of the United States anymore! This blasphemously wicked city and the people who run and represent it are literally another country onto themselves!

This is classic Obama, good intentioned (I hope) but doomed to disaster for anyone who takes a step back and looks at what it is.

At this point all evidence runs contrary to good intentions. He’s been surrounded by Marxists all of his life, and his formal education (or miseducation) at Columbia and Harvard did nothing but infuse him with a deeper knowledge of rhetoric with which to cloak his goals.

Anyone who equates Obama with the democrat party of old really needs to wake-up and realize that Move-on et. al. took over in 2002 and nothing a rat says on the national stage has an honest or good intention.

Coal, clean coal, coal gasification is huge. The bridge to energy independence starts and ends with coal. To kill coal gasification or clean coal is to burn down the bridge while still claiming the goal.

Missy on November 3, 2008 at 9:11 AM

For what it’s worth. I found this in a academic paper that quotes Obama:

Leadership in international climate policy is an additional concern on Obama’s agenda. In a recent article, he emphasizes the global dimensions of the climate change problem and the challenge for the U.S. (Obama 2007a):

“As the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases, America has the responsibility to lead. While many of our industrial partners are working hard to reduce their emissions, we are increasing ours at a steady clip …. As president, I intend to enact a cap-and trade system that will dramatically reduce our carbon emissions. … Getting our own house in order is only a first step. … We need a global response to climate change that includes binding and enforceable commitments …”

Unlike Clinton, however, Obama also emphasizes that a shift in the direction of energy and climate policy will cause costs to the U.S. households.23

23 In a speech during his campaign (Obama 2007c), he noted: “Make no mistake – developing the next
generation of energy will be one of the greatest challenges that this generation of Americans will ever face. It will not be easy. It will not come without costs or without sacrifice. And if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, they are either fooling themselves or trying to fool you.”

But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more money in their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more rapidly, particularly U.S. automakers…”

2. Our Secure Liberty

The One’s plan here is perfectly consistent with everything else we’ve seen from him. He recognizes that penalizing coal use will cause higher prices. How will an Oministration deal with that?

There can’t be any doubt that he will give another tax “credit” to the same people he’s going to send checks for taxes they don’t pay and redistribute the burden of paying for energy to those he deems able to afford the costs.

America is NOT the world’s largest producer of greenhouse gases. China takes the polluter’s lead following Mother Nature who produces “bad” effects from thunderstorms, earthquakes and volcanoes. And who’s sh*t does Obama keep rubbing America’s nose in as his exemplary model to imitate? CHINA. Bloody Red Communist China.

And if America elects anyone but Obama, his thug supporters have promised domestic terrorism, to make American citizens’ blood flow in American streets. Funny, Obama himself promises domestic terrorism when elected. The only difference? If Obama is defeated, the domestic terrorists can be brought to justice. If Obama wins, the domestic terrorists become legalized government employees paid by our taxes to spill our blood, NEVER TO BE PROSECUTED, ONLY REWARDED FOR BEING THUGS.

let me say that I try to not harm the environment whenever possible.. ie I use chickens for insect control, not insecticides (Yes, the chicken droppings pollute too)

ANyway, this whole global warming thing is really getting to be annowying. In southeastern pa, there are a whole bunch of huge granite boulders about 20 miles north of Philadlphia, They were left there by the last ice age only 10k years ago.. I’m sure that Ogg wasn’t driving an SUV in 3000BC. If you tried to swim in the Great Lakes 5000 years ago, that would have been impossible. They were under a sheet of ice two miles thick.

The global warming stuff isn’t about ’saving the earth’… it is about control and the destruction of private property rights. Again, that is not to say that you shouldn’t make reasonable efforts to conserve but this cap and trade stuff is utter idiocy.

I live in Pikeville, KY.. home to the Hatfield/McCoy hillbilly feuds… Home to Hillbilly Days (a festival that raises more money for Shriners hospitals for burned and cripled children than any other place in the nation).

Things are a little different here these days. We have Wi-Fi, blogs, iPhones, and BMW’s and we sit on billions of dollars worth of coal.

We don’t own the coal, but our community depends on mining for our livelihoods directly or indirectly. Many hard working people here still struggle. Obama would destroy my area of the country. Furthermore, he’s going to cause the price of YOUR electricity, and all the goods you buy from factories that use electricity, and all the goods you bur from stores that use electricity, to skyrocket.

But with the earth cooling for the past ten years and prediction that its probably going to continue to cool for years to come, you would think these politicians would not be so bold as to invoke the outrageous global warming lie as an excuse for taxes. Yet they do, unbelievable!!
