Video: Obama scratches mouth with middle finger, earns banner treatment on Drudge

posted at 1:44 pm on November 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

An unlikely meme du jour for the day before the election, but you go to war with the content you have. Here’s the video of him supposedly doing this to Hillary in April. To believe it’s intentional, you have to believe The One is either stupid or reckless. Uncomfortably comfortable with radical leftists? Yes. Vastly overrated as an orator? Yes. Stupid and reckless? No.

It’ll be fun watching Drudge follow this dopey tic throughout The One’s term if he wins tomorrow, though. One absent-minded chin scratch with the wrong finger during a summit with Vladimir Putin and presto — international incident.

Did anyone see HC last night when he introduced Rev. Otis Moss? I said OMG he just flipped the US the bird. He’s so arrogant, God help us!

Anyway, this is my favorite all time slip-up

“My fellow Americans, I’ve just signed legislation outlawing Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.”

YRM on November 3, 2008 at 2:19 PM

I’ve accused Allahpundit of operating for the Dems several times before. During the primaries he made it a point to write that he was going to vote straight Dem.

There has been far too many times that Allah has taken the task of defending the obvious. It’s most likely the same reason he hides behind a phony screen name.

I have my theories as to why he holds some of the positions he does, but it would be politically incorrect to voice them outloud.

Gregor on November 3, 2008 at 2:30 PM

Here’s the video of him supposedly doing this to Hillary in April. To believe it’s intentional, you have to believe The One is either stupid or reckless.

And he did do that as well to hillary. The reaction by the crowd was to whoop and laugh. You could see the woman in the background who didn’t get it, and then lean over to ask her friend who then whispered in her ear. After that, she was laughing her arse off with the rest of them. If you read the transcript – there was no reason for a laugh line there. It looked completely like it seemed. And he got away with it, with his plausible denyability – Obama: “What? I did nothing of the sort!!” Obama supporter: “He did nothing of the sort!!”

So what does it matter why. he did it. He Did he scratch his mouth with his middle finger at any other time of the speech? Or only when he was talking about McCain?

Stupid and reckless are two words to use in describing this campaign from Obama. It can be both. Along with arrogant. As well as a few other well chosen adjectives that apply quite well.

wise_man on November 3, 2008 at 2:30 PM

And this is why…though at the end of the day I am pulling the lever against Sarah Palin…i read you every day allah. NO ONE from the left wing blogosphere would give McCain that kind of respect in commenting on him. Congrats for being the only one out here staying above the fray…no matter how hard the commenters cry about it. You were always better than brian, you’re better than ED, you should be running this show!

ernesto on November 3, 2008 at 2:26 PM

Oh, there’s a glowing endorsement:

capitalist piglet on November 3, 2008 at 2:31 PM

You know, its time to be grateful for Obama.

He has single handedly put the scary back in liberal.

Americans became angry at GW but that’s being rapidly displaced with memories of how bad socialism has been for us and how terrible radical liberalism has treated the rest of the world.

I think it may well be time to send the Obama campaign a nice thank you card.

Esthier on November 3, 2008 at 2:32 PM

Back in the days before my LASIK surgery, I used to adjust my glasses by pushing them up with my middle finger. Of course, I only used my middle finger when I wanted to make a “statement.” I ALWAYS knew when I was doing it.

There are times when I miss those glasses. But there’s always an itch that needs scratching, so I’m not expressionless in meetings or other situations where the wanton display of the finger can get you in trouble.

Having said that, I had a nun in High School (late 60s, early 70s) who used her middle finger to make a point or to start a count. I never knew if she did it on purpose or was unaware of what it meant. It always produced a twitter which she never questioned so I think even she knew what it meant.

But today? To not know what the finger means and “accidently” use it? Doubtful…

Not accidental. Guy is too calculating for it to be accidental. It’s a message to someone “in the know”. Maybe Michelle, maybe Ayers. I’ve seen many many of his speaches. I’ve only seen this twice. #1 about Hillary #2 about McCain. If you can show me another one, I’d be open-minded about it.

marklmail on November 3, 2008 at 2:35 PM

If you don’t think that was on purpose, go the mirror and try doing the One’s Three Finger Chin Dance yourself. (Index finger, Thumb, Middle Finger) It is not easy to get that middle finger up unintentionally. It is *much* easier “wiping” your chin *again* with the index finger.

Stupid and reckless? No.

Intentional and candid. Yes.

SouthernDem on November 3, 2008 at 2:28 PM

I hate to break it to you, but a cynic ascribes the basest motivations to people. If AP were a cynic he would have no doubt, at all, that BHO did this intentionally.

Cynicism is not what AP is about – not from his postings, at least. This is more along the lines of defeatism.

That said, I think we should just focus on the things we can prove he did/said.

Looks like we may have to learn the new salute much like the ones Spaceballs gave President Skroob when he entered the room.

44Magnum on November 3, 2008 at 2:35 PM

Christoph, you stole most of my thunder.

AP, if Obama is anything notable, it’s reckless. In the America he grew up in, his associations would have doomed any political career outside of the south side, Berkeley, or Santa Monica – forget state-wide or national.

And once arriving, incredibly and absurdly, on the presidential campaign stage, he proceeds to say/do one campaign-ending thing after another (the coal industry stuff is typical – in it’s own jaw-dropping way).

And that’s just reckless stuff that hurts him. On things, er, above his pay grade – trivial stuff like ongoing hot wars involving his country – he of course is as reckless and despicable as most of his party.

Inexperience accounts for some of it, intellectual mediocrity for some, but recklessness is the most prominent feature Obama has displayed.

Having said all that, I haven’t seen the earlier or today’s finger videos, nor will I (I’m appalled and ashamed of my country enough already, have been for a while).

AP, you’re the wittiest blogger there is (well Tim Blair’s an equal, with a totally different style), but you’d be smart to revisit the ultra-fastidious approach you take to defusing/explaining/rationalizing nearly ANY gaffe, contemptible misbehavior, or outright outrage by a Dem in the public square.

Otherwise you’re gonna be real busy if America ratifies the transition to an unserious and quasi-democratic country tomorrow.

Some people would like to see the election thrown to Obama to a real conservative would – by magic – be elected in the primaries and general election after the devastation that Obama brought to our country in his first 4 years. And his first 4 years might end up being a total of 8 years of destruction along with a democrat house and senate. He can do many things, a lot that we already know about such as appointing very left supreme court justices. And of course there’s all the things that we don’t know about but shouldn’t surprise us when they happen.

Ronald Reagan would not be pleased with the people who have this ‘we need a 1976 to get a 1980′ mentality that will do great harm to our country for their political aspirations that may never come out as they wish.

cause i defended my attacks on allah? what is this the obamanation and the free republic that got ticked cause i supported the bail out and defined myself as liberal republican like Mac? why don’t you notice my other comments here i agreed w/ someone’s criticism of allah and i have slurpers of his attacking me from all sides, again looks like that guy who warned me of not allowing to criticise him was up to something. out for this thread since you wanted to make it about me agreeing w/ a guy about a criticism of allah, under your skin much?

YRM on November 3, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Too true, but that’s based on rational reasons, wouldn’t you say? Even Ms. Malkin’s always been fairly anti-Mav.
SouthernDem on November 3, 2008 at 2:45 PM

Explain how – knowing that either Obama or McCain will be the next president – being “anti-Mav”, anti-mcCain is rational. Knowing that the end result of bashing McCain will be to welcome a president Obama for 4 to 8 years.

Oh, Sorry I see other people have mentioned what I did at 2:47. Should have read the comments before posting.

It’s most likely the same reason he hides behind a phony screen name.

and his supporters seem easy to get ticked for criticising him, already gotten the troll name for speaking my mind, hypocrites much?

YRM on November 3, 2008 at 2:52 PM

This is a signal that decorum in American politics is dead. Democrats have killed it. Bill Clinton obviously didn’t help it, but I don’t remember him publicly doing this to an opponent. (Please correct me if I’m forgetting something.)

You know who else behaves in a breathtakingly indecorous way? Hugo Chavez.

This is a pattern with a certain ideology, and it’s just the beginning in America. The sixties radicals are older now, but they are in a state of arrested development – and they think they’re about to get everything they want.

We can’t let that happen.

Because folks are still free to vote – or not vote – based on their opinions of the candidates. Make no mistake, I’ve already pulled the lever for McCain. But here in western NC I’ve got some good right leaning and total conservative friends who will not be voting for either because they’ve got some strong opinions on McCain’s voting record.

I wonder if she still thinks he is a great conservative.

cmc on November 3, 2008 at 2:45 PM

I don’t think Michelle has ever thought Allah was “a great conservative. He’s not a conservative. He’s Libertarian.

Although I can’t get into the mind of Michelle and am only giving my opinion … I believe Michelle employs Allah for much the same reason that Fox News employs Alan Colmes. Now I’m not saying Allah is like Alan Colmes. Only to the point that he “balances the blog.”

Gregor on November 3, 2008 at 2:56 PM

I have to disagree with Allahpundit. The gesture seems rather awkward and out of place. It looks pretty intentional to me and he, rather badly, tried to slip it in there with a chin scratch.

I mean, you can obviously tell that Obama doesn’t even want to congratulate McCain on a tough Presidential race, so I’m gonna go ahead and say that I think it was intentional.

I don’t think people care whether you like or dislike either Ed or Allah, it that you have come into their house and immediately started asking/telling them that you want one of them to leave. If you didn’t like the site, why sign up? Not logical.

Cindy Munford on November 3, 2008 at 2:57 PM

to all you Allah lovers. riddle me this. On the last day of campaigning. Gov Palin pulls 18,000+ in MO. Biden pulls 400. this is great uplifting news for McCain supporters looking for a ray of hope. yet not a mention by Allah because it makes Gov APlin look good. so the little ateist will not post it.

Troll: To deliberately post false or controversial messages to gain attention for the sake of attention, usually from people who genuinely want to help. The act of posting false messages is called trolling.

Can anyone point to a video of him exhibiting this “dopey tick” outside the context of a more or less backhanded compliment to his opponent? I’m open to the idea that is a tick, but that would seem to be something for which there are examples.

Sure, Obama is decidedly NOT stupid and reckless, but he certainly has the “plausible deniability” game figured out, and he knows his media boundaries (almost none?). Why not indulge himself in a little outside-of-the-law, messianic, assholish behavior to relieve a bit of stress in this tense, late hour?

Fairly? I think for the longest time she wasn’t even sure she’d vote for him.

Esthier on November 3, 2008 at 3:01 PM

He hides behind a screen name because the islamofascists and the left would do him serious harm — while the left not so much these days, the islamofascists would still cut his pretty little head off.

Blake on November 3, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Really? Is that why we all know who Michelle is, and Robert Spencer, and Ed Morrissey? I’ve been blogging against Islam for years and use my real name, and I’ve received death threats and had to speak to the FBI about it on a few occasions. But we don’t hide behind screen names because it looks like you’re hiding something and it’s unprofessional.

I think we can agree that Allah hasn’t been nearly as harsh on Islam as Michelle.

I don’t believe that has anything to do with it. It’s something else, and when questioned by readers on many occasions … Allah has simply refused to even respond.

Gregor on November 3, 2008 at 3:01 PM

Yeah of course he accidentally used the lipsticked pig line too. He had no idea there might be political implications to the phrase when the pitbull with lipstick was at the height of it’s popularity None.

The point about all these things is that of course he knows what he’s doing. He’s not stupid. It’s a clever form of recklessness. Look at it logically. The lipstick insult almost worked to perfection for his campaign because the McCain camp handled it just as they anticipated. He uses this stuff to energize his base and to create an unprovable controversy and take more dangerous issues off the table and replace them with his campaign memes of race and unity. He took a step back so he could take two forward and regain the high ground. It also shows his believers how he can do and get away with anything he wants as their glorious Sun King.

Will people be talking less about bankrupting the coal industry now? His biggest concern today was losing the coal states and the election. He can give up a few % of the popular vote as long as he gets the destruction of coal industry out of the news.

Yeah. His voting record is 80%. And Obama’s is 07%.

Yeah … that’s a tough choice as to who to support, and who to see kept out of the whitehouse.

Guys, come on, we have our disagreements here but please let’s not fight the day before the election. United front. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
