Video: Obama scratches mouth with middle finger, earns banner treatment on Drudge

posted at 1:44 pm on November 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

An unlikely meme du jour for the day before the election, but you go to war with the content you have. Here’s the video of him supposedly doing this to Hillary in April. To believe it’s intentional, you have to believe The One is either stupid or reckless. Uncomfortably comfortable with radical leftists? Yes. Vastly overrated as an orator? Yes. Stupid and reckless? No.

It’ll be fun watching Drudge follow this dopey tic throughout The One’s term if he wins tomorrow, though. One absent-minded chin scratch with the wrong finger during a summit with Vladimir Putin and presto — international incident.

Maybe this is a normal gesture in Indonesia?

progressoverpeace on November 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

It certainly looks absent-minded, but the Hillary incident was quite deliberate, the crowd egged him on and he smirked. Hard to say if this is a coincidence or a pattern, but it’s trivial.

obladioblada on November 3, 2008 at 1:52 PM

It’s not trivial. It’s a clear signal of his immaturity.

He wouldn’t be scratching his face at all (much less in such an awkward, unnatural way) if he was sincerely congratulating an opponent, and as you pointed out, this isn’t the first time he’s done such a thing.

I can’t believe there are still people who believe this “man” is incapable of such a low-class gesture. Yeah, and he didn’t flip off Hillary, he didn’t mean anything with the “kitchen” remarks toward her, and he didn’t call Sarah Palin a pig. It’s all just one big coincidence.

He’s just a nice, classy guy.

Sure.

capitalist piglet on November 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

He wasn’t giving the middle finger to McCain, he was giving it to the American Taxpayer.

Elizabetty on November 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

It’s not that I completely believe it was unintentional; I just don’t want to make any false accusations and look like an idiot. After that whole “B scratched on chick’s face” hoax, I don’t want to stoke any flames and get us all accused of being “echo-chamber wingnuts.” We have PLENTY, and I mean PLENTY, of other definite things we can hit Obama with.

If someone would like to convince me otherwise, that’s fine, but I really don’t care about this issue as much as I care about all the other garbage swirling around Obama.

Right, but Obama supporters yelling “racism” every time someone criticizes The One is intelligent.

redrock on November 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

It sure looks deliberate but OTOH it might be a habit thing, you know, of wiping the cocaine off the nostrils after sniffing.

max on November 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM

He does this sort of thing a lot.

Usually, he changes the subject with “Now…” (Or “Na…”)

He gets his thoughts in order for a second, remembering just the wording he rehearsed.

Then he charges ahead and does it.

The Hillary one,
the lipstick on a pig (and the following comment about old fish)
and now this.

And it’s not the only time he has done this. It isn’t always a rude gesture, it’s just any time he wants people to “read between the lines” of his words.

Does he think McCain has run a hard campaign and want to congratulate him on it? No, he whines about Fox and how they poison people against him. He believes McCain should just quit and let him have it.

This guy is a jerk, and he is calculating enough to do his “screw you”s this way, so that if we do this, we’ll be the ones who look crazy.

Remember the cross that was a bookshelf in Huck’s ads? Did anyone here who thinks Obama doesn’t do this intentionally think Huck did that unintentionally? And how much more calculating is Obama? I rest my case.

Allahpundit

You better watch it again Allah. He was getting the scratching job done just fine using his index finger and then he intentionally and very unnaturally went back to scratch again switching to the middle finger, just after telling us he was congratulating McCain. Anybody who thinks a politician, that knows they are on camera, isn’t totally conscience of their hand movements is beyond naive.

ALLAHPUNDIT, you wrote:

“you have to believe The One is either stupid or reckless”

He kicks reporters off the plane 4-days before the finish line? Why? I say thin-skinned and reckless.

He creates his own Presidential seal, something a person would know is bound to create ridicule if a person thought normally. Why? I say megalomaniac and reckless.

There’s other examples, but I’ll just use those two for now.

That doesn’t mean Obama was giving McCain the finger, but your stuff about Obama not being reckless isn’t born out by the facts.

“Sweetie”, anyone?

“Punished by a baby.”

my comment from the last post-
Coincidence? Subconscious? or is Obama a scoundral, a charlatan, a Chigago thug, a PUNK, is it just part of who he is? I’m just asking a question, as Treacher once said.

abinitioadinfinitum on November 3, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Of course it’s intentional. Who scratches their face with their middle finger? AP, the last time he did this, he was speaking of his last rival, Hillary. Now when speaking of McCain, his current rival, the strange middle finger scratch is there again.

Now, I ask you, show me any other footage of him scratching himself with his middle finger. If this odd gesture is in no way intentional, and this is how he just scratches himself, he should be doing it everyday, everywhere. And he doesn’t. He has done it only twice, once when speaking of Hillary, and once when speaking of McCain, under almost identical circumstances.

You know, as a blogger, naivete does not suit you.

your_worst_enemy on November 3, 2008 at 2:07 PM

It isnt a matter of stupidity or recklessness.

It comes out of his arrogance. Like Michelle said, he thinks he can do whatever he wants. He has his own transatlantic plane with his own logo, he had his own shield, he had the Greek columns. All those things can be considered reckless as well, they are very crass symbols, but to me its just hubris.

It’s not a question of being stupid or reckless, AP. It’s a matter of arrogance and an air of untouchability- somewhat justified considering the number of issues he’s been given a pass on.

Is there a Democrat LESS suited for the Oval Office than this wannabe thug? Would Hillary Clinton – for all the things people have said and believed about her – do something like this to John McCain?

Obama’s had body-language experts train him, no doubt. So any slip-up would be rare.

JetBoy on November 3, 2008 at 2:15 PM

Look at what he was saying…

“Now, Senator McCain has served the country honorably, and at thte end of this long race, I want to congratulate him on the tough race he has fought… [FINGER]”

This is very much in keeping with Obama’s out-of-control narcissism. He resents that McCain is thought of as an honorable man when he feels McCain has waged a dirty campaign against him. So he lashes out.

Remember, he gave Hillary the finger the day after he was beaten up in a debate, and was feeling like he had been treated unfairly. When Obama feels an injustice has been done to him, this is how he reacts.

LGF has an interesting story up; Obama’s first full time job out of school was with a firm with ties to SDS.

I read in the Seattle P-I that Bill Ayers’ only recorded political donation is to guess who. Barack Obama (in 2001, iirc).

This goes back a long way. And if Obama isn’t old enough to have been one of the sixties radicals, marching in the streets, spitting on Vietnam vets and flipping off “The Man”, he’s making up for it now…literally.

Bill Ayers is probably laughing his ass off.

capitalist piglet on November 3, 2008 at 2:25 PM

If it was intentional, it was designed to be plausibly deniable, so one kind of has to let it drop. Yet it does seems like too much of a coincidence that Obama does it twice exactly when he mentions how wonderful his opponent is at the end of long campaign, but what are you gonna do?

It’s a personality feature of egotistical pricks to do this type of audacious stuff, though. Bill Clinton would talk his opponents and close out the conversation by saying, “Nice tie” which would elicit a thank-you, whereupon Bill’s entourage would laugh. Turns out, “nice tie” was code for “f*** you.” Narcissists with sociopathic tendencies — a personality type common amongst successful politicians — feel a deep need to do this “audacious” stuff because it makes them feel in control and superior to their audience and bonds them with people in on the joke.

I had a boss once who ran a business and occasionally would run the cash register if the place was busy and would do stuff like say to a distracted customer rooting about in her purse for change, “That’ll be ten pounds and thirty f***ing pence.” When the nonplussed customer would look up and say, “Excuse me?” he would adjust and say, “Ten pounds and thirty five pence, please” with a puppy dog look. It was so audacious and jerky, no customer ever called him on it. He was a very successful guy. He got a buzz out of doing it and it showed the employees how in control he was that he could get away with anything including insulting customers right to their faces. He would have made a great politician.

ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 2:26 PM

It probably was intentional, and was probably an example of his arrogance and attitude that he can get away with anything. Okay — but do you really want to be talking about this silly incident from months ago when he’s providing all sorts of substantive targets? My favorite example, combining his pathetic lack of accomplishment, feeling of invincibility, and perhaps detachment from reality, was his reference to the Senate Banking Committee as “my committee” when he’s not its chair, and guess what — not even on the committee! That was his attempt to provide an example of something he’s accomplished (a vote on an Iran sanction). That’s an oldie worth replaying . . . .

Should he win, this will likely be the “salute” Obomber typically receives from Americans.

Not just that. If BHO won (and I don’t think he will) all of his supporters would suddenly LOVE his middle name and would be calling him nothing but ‘Hussein’.

After that, we would be able to look forward to Wright and Ayers frequent White House guests, just as BHO just showed up at a campaign stop with the new Reverend of Trinity (as much a scumbag as Wright). BHO thinks that he can do anything he wants and the MSM (and Allahpundit) would be more than happy to declare that they are “not sure” he’s really doing what he is really doing. It will be as the USSR was – as we’ve been treated to the preview during the campaign.

I’ve noticed Drudge has become more McCain friendly in the past week or two. As pleasing as it is on a certain level, I prefer if he wouldn’t be like that. You want to be as centrist as possible or you will lose the respect of your readership.

Oh puhleeeeze. Get your tongue out of Allah’s ass.

Obama is campaigning for McCain now. This and the coal video are just what we need on the last day before the election. McCain couldn’t pay enough for these gems.

You mean the guy Ms. Malkin handpicked from the moment she started this blog? Yes, yes. I’m sure you’d know better than her.

The only reason you joined up this morning is so you could join the mounting chorus of infants who apparently had no idea AP was always a cynic.

I can’t wait for the election to be over just so the whining will stop.

And this is why…though at the end of the day I am pulling the lever against Sarah Palin…i read you every day allah. NO ONE from the left wing blogosphere would give McCain that kind of respect in commenting on him. Congrats for being the only one out here staying above the fray…no matter how hard the commenters cry about it. You were always better than brian, you’re better than ED, you should be running this show!

use this as proof when we run allah out in the coming months
