My Predictions

Earlier, Allahpundit gave his predictions for the national race. I’m a bit more optimistic, especially given the movement over the last few days, but I’m more or less a born optimist anyway. I think John McCain will win a squeaker over Barack Obama, 273-265, by holding Florida, Nevada, and adding Pennsylvania as a trade for Virginia:

Note that I leave Minnesota in the blue column today, despite the virtual dead heat Survey USA shows in its final polling. As Jazz Shaw and James Joyner note, the RCP average shows Obama significantly ahead, but they include the Strib’s MinnPoll that routinely overstates Democratic strength. The same poll has Al Franken ahead of Norm Coleman by four points. Because of its structure, the RCP average lags on movement, and Survey USA shows some movement towards Republicans here — but I don’t think this is the election that moves Minnesota to the red column after 36 years of going blue.
I don’t think this is the election that puts Florida in the blue column, either, or Nevada. Early-vote polling didn’t show enough of an advantage for Obama, and now Republicans will make up the majority of poll-goers in both states. It really comes down to Virginia and Pennsylvania, and a split can favor either candidate. I think Pennsylvania has a real shot at going red, and Virginia’s a toss-up at this point. GOTV will make a difference, but so will those undecideds — and as I’ve said before, if that many people still haven’t made up their mind to vote Obama, then I expect most of them to take the safe fall-back position of McCain.
The Senate and the House look like a lock for Democrats, however. I expect to see a 57-43 split in the upper chamber, counting the independent caucusers for the Dems. In the House, Pelosi will marginally increase her majority to 237-198. There are just too many open Republican seats in this election, regardless of the narrowing of the generic Congressional balloting.
Win, lose, or draw, however, I’ll be broadcasting election results live at AM 1280 The Patriot tomorrow from 8-11 pm CT. We’ll have live chat and live video broadcasting during the returns. Be sure to tune in right here at Hot Air, where we will celebrate the finale of the most remarkable presidential election in my lifetime!

Or maybe a strange case of mass masochism.

I worry that our optimism on this site is reminiscent of the 2006 mid-terms… nobody believed the polls than… and lo and behold, they were right.

Is there a doctor in the house? I think I may have ulcers and other gastric disorders due to this election and the prospect of that loser Obama becoming our next president. I vascillate between believing McCain wins 273-268 and thinking Obama wins by 50 Evs. What’s the prescription?
uncalheels on November 3, 2008 at 1:27 PM
Well, it’s over for me. I already voted by absentee ballot for McCain. However, I live in California, a so deeply blue state, that my vote will be lost in a sea of Obamaphiles. In fact, unless the election is close, I suspect that they won’t bother to count the mail in votes.
The people here in Lala land can’t wait to vote themselves some more entitlements. Thus the state is swimming in a sea of red ink. In spite of all my efforts, my daughter is still undecided…she says she doesn’t know whether to vote for The Suit or The Coot.

The difference this year from 2006 is that the GOP base is going to come out b/c of Sarah, Anger and Obama. Undecideds are going to break for McCain and they are already are according to SUSA polls in MN, OH and VA. The base sat home in disgust in 06 b/c of Foley, corruption, Iraq, etc. The polls this year do not take into consider GOP turnout. And even in 2006, we were very, very close in VA, MT and MO.
IR-MN on November 3, 2008 at 1:33 PM
Re: North Carolina and the polls…
I think a similar effect is at work here as in Pennsylvania.
Poll-takers are oversampling urban democrats relative to rural democrats.
This means that they take the total number of Democrats likely to vote, and assume that they support Obama at the rate that *urban* Democrats support Obama, and see a win for Obama.
In Pennsylvania, Hillary got most of her support from rural Democrats. Clearly they are less sold on Obama than, say, voters in Philadelphia.
This means that Obama’s support among Pennsylvania Democrats in the polls is likely significantly overstated.
We’ve spent quite a bit of time noting that pollsters are getting the party ID weighting very, very wrong. It’s worth noting that even with the party ID weighting corrected, the pollsters are likely STILL overstating Obama’s strength.
I think the same logic likely applies to quite a few other states — New Hampshire, Ohio, Colorado, and North Carolina among them.
So, no, North Carolina is NOT a swing state.

You two folks can CHOOSE to be NEGITIVE NELLIES, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord and have faith in REAL AMERICANS to vote for the good of America, not for a radical black liberation white hater, that despises all that is right and good about America!

I will VOTE–I GAVE $$ — I blogged — BUT the “sheep” are just too many and they’ve downed the “kool-aid” by the gallons! I’m in Chicago–(groan) the celebration has started– Rush just said he’s a realist (sigh)–I need to go and run.

Athena on November 3, 2008 at 1:39 PM
This is not 2006.
If the Dems had put up a more centrist candidate, or McCain had picked a less exciting running mate, it definitely could be 2006 again.
But no way the GOP base sits this election out. Not with Obama the Infanticide running against Sarah Palin the pro-life poster child; not with the Chairman of the Joyce Foundation running against a proud moose hunter; not with General Betray-Us running against a bona fide war hero; not with Senator Government running against Mr. Never Took an Earmark.
There’s just no major wing of the GOP base that can’t look at one of our candidates and feel pride pulling the lever. That’s a HUGE difference from 2006 when we were asked to hold our noses and vote for our incumbent Congress-critters.
ClintACK on November 3, 2008 at 1:41 PM
I do have faith in REAL Americans…. it’s the fake ones that Obama and ACORN have registered, and the voter fraud machine being cranked up, that I worry about… I just feel sometimes that we are not being realistic here in terms of polls… I hope for the best, but I just don’t feel 100% confident.

As a Pennsylvania, I have to comment that where I am (SE suburbs of Phila) I see 7-1 McCain signs over Obama. I doubt that’s a very predictive sign, but Kerry had a similar abundance of signs in SE PA, and handily won PA in 2004.
When was the last time PA went Republican? Reagan?
budorob on November 3, 2008 at 1:57 PM
Just because I feel anxiety does not make me a troll. You can still be pro-McCain and be worried/unsure about the outcome. Good grief.
Republican on November 3, 2008 at 1:57 PM
Now that is strange. What would convince an undecided to vote for obama:higher energy prices, higher taxes, civil patrols?

I’m Manly Rash and I approve this message.
ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Listening to Rush, a woman just stated that the only hope remaining for McCain is that the remaining voters don’t for Obama because of racism.
So, according to this woman, people can’t make a choice about a candidate based on their platform or lack thereof?Voters can’t see Obama’s radical leftist platform and decide, that isn’t for me? They can’t see Obama’s vast ties to Marxist radicalism and decide, that isn’t for me? If we make the choice to support McCain over Obama, we are just racists and th
at’s that.
This is what disgusts me about Obama’s “minions”.

ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 2:03 PM
No, look at the facts…it has already been reported that the majority of blacks have voted, Obama’s base.
You would now need 10-12% more of the undecided to go for Obama.
In every election, the undecided has gone to the Republicans more. So even if it was a toss up (50/50), McCain gains an additional 5 -6%, more then a enough to put him over the top.
The key is for the Republicans not to fall for this “Obama has won Cr*p.

You Liberal-Dems have written the book on “vile language and aggression”. So spare me the lecture. And yes, your opinion is as valid as mine… however, I must say that quoting the “Founding Fathers” implies that you have respect for the Constitution — which you don’t, otherwise you wouldn’t support people who would appoint judges who would legislate from the bench, thereby circumventing our constitution.
Hussein may wind up President, so you can enjoy your four year run. Because if that happens, it’ll be a Dem wipe-out in Congress in 2010, and President Palin in 2012. Bank on it Uncle Aina.

Below is Mcguyver’s prediction:
McCain 428, ……Obama 110, …………..!!!!!!
The way I arrived at this prediction is by left clicking on each individual state at CNN and then on the “VIEW PREVIOUS OHIO WINNERS” for example.
Every state that had less than a 10% win for Kerry I put into Red for John McCain, with the exception for Vermont.
The reason for that is because Vermont loved John McCain in the primary (by 68%) and I cannot see even these New England liberals vote for a socialist, they are pretty independent there.
In California, Kerry won by only 9%, believe it or not, so I had to paint it red, too ( McCain was California’s favorite in the primary).
Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois were won by Kerry with less than 10% but because the Democrat candidates are from there I had to paint them blue.
I almost threw in NJ as well, but I’m going easy on Obama.
I know you are thinking that I’m crazy.
But follow me here:
1) We’ve had several anonymous posters at Hillbuzz.com, that stated, the internals from Obama’s own campaign know….. that, they have to have a 10% lead in order to win because of the Bradley effect.
2) All the leads in all the polls have Democrats heavily weighted in their sampling. Implying of course, that more Democrats will be voting….. and I beg to differ.
Not too mention that they have anywhere from a 60% – 80% poll refusal rate.
So, who’s responding to polls? Answer: Not voters who are flipping to McCain!!
Because of the enthusiasm for Palin, more Republicans will be voting, and, the early votes in California bear that out, for example.
2a) The pollsters are weighting undecideds heavily in the polls as well. And those are now trending towards McCain.
3) I lived on the Left Coast for a decade, and the friends I know that would be registered Democrat or Independent, and voted for Kerry, would NEVER… EVER… vote for a socialist Obama!!
On more occasions than I can count, here in the HotAir comments, we’ve seen people reporting that friends and family members who have voted straight Democrat ticket for years…., will be voting McCain!!!
So why don’t you try it at CNN and see what predictions you come up with?
Mcguyver on November 3, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Fortunata on November 3, 2008 at 2:49 PM
As a new “Hot’er”, (I’m a guy or I’d be a HOTTIE), but anyway I have made my call on page 2 but would like to STATE AGAIN that part of the main reason for poll poop is that this year, for the first time ever in polling, the number of NON-RESPONCES is HUGE! Again, I state, if these were for Obama the King we’d know it… These are folks that do NOT want to participate in the phoney polls, they do NOT want to be called racist / redneck…
If we have 70% that are REFUSING to answer, what should that tell us that have faith in the American people…
I believe that McCain will win 281 to 257…
Put it in the bank…. ( oh wait, that’s Mr.Rash’s line )
Mark Garnett on November 3, 2008 at 2:49 PM
Oh… I forgot…
Because even the people who believe that Obama will win (but are voting for McCain) they will be voting the GOP back into a lead in the House and.. into the Senate!!
Mcguyver on November 3, 2008 at 2:53 PM
The “change” we’ll get will certainly blow, that’s for sure. Seriously, how dumb do you have to be to cheer the victory of a guy who promises to bankrupt industries vital to this country?

Bush won PA in 88 and if you look at 2004 Bush came close to

I always find the idea that the GOP is for the “big wigs” ridiculous — how can people think this when Hollywood and big-monied Libs like Soros are spoonfeeding the Dems?

Yes, New Labour have wrecked Britain in less than 10 years, Obama could still do a lot of damage in his one-term presidency. That’s why he won’t get it.

WHAT STATES WILL BE TOO CLOSE TO CALL, WITH ACCORN REGISTRATIONS CHALLENGED BY THE GOP, AND VOTING MACHINES CHALLENGED BY THE DNC? MY PREDICTION IS 2000 REPEATING OVER MULTIPLE STATES, WITH RECOUNTS, REVOTES, TRIALS AND APPEALS.

Pretty bold in your predictions. I, as much as 98% of the respondents here on Hot Air, would love for that to be true. I would pay good money to see the look on Olbemann’s face if that were to happen.
However, if you are wrong, you will have no, zero, nada, credibility from here on out. You do know that don’t you?
As a coach myself, I want enthusiasm and a no quit attitude from all my players, but wild trash talking, and bold off the chart predictions, just make us look foolish.

From Ramussen:Like Reagan, Obama’s tax-cutting message became the single most visible part of his campaign and 31% of voters expect their taxes to decline if the Democrat wins tomorrow. Only 11% expect a tax-cut with a McCain victory.
I think I’m going to vomit.

Unc: If you’ve been paying attention as you posted, you’ll have seen that The One’s promises coupled with his clear record of voting with his party make it clear that the only hope of bi-partisan governance in the next 2 years is through McCain. McCain has reached across the aisle on many issues, irritating many in the GOP. If any candidate can pull the country together (and I’m uncertain that any candidate can) it is McCain. There will be much not to like for those of us who support him in this election.
The differ at their core. McCain views this country’s foundation as it’s strength while The One sees that foundation as it’s flaw. I’m still hopeful that many who are presently telling pollsters that they support The One are either lying or simply won’t be able to pull a lever for him tomorrow.
Otherwise, it will be time to batten down the hatches and weather what I hope will be only a 2 year storm. I say 2 years because The One’s supporters will be very disenchanted in 2010 when they find they still have to do distasteful things to survive, such as pay mortgages or rent and put gas in their tanks. The videos of tomorrow night’s celebration in Chicago will serve as painful reminders of His promises that went unfulfilled.

The center-left parties in the West have all been taken over by the middle-class yuppies. Actor luvvies, media-types etc. New Labour and the Dems personify this. The center-right parties used to be the home of the “respectable” middle-classes but are now seeing a re-alignment of the white working class. In Britain, this last will vote Tory in the next election unless they vote BNP (far right).

reread those quotes…three times.
When you see the finish line, you don’t start whining and whimpering, you pick up your feet and sprint…then on Wednesday you tell your marketing manager, looks like he may have to find another example of “closing the deal”.

If this is true then Americans will deserve the government they get. But I don’t think so.
Fortunata on November 3, 2008 at 3:24 PM
All the rhetoric about “we are ahead”, and “we can’t lose” is a setup so when they do lose, they can point and say “something has to be wrong, everyone predicted we would win”, and the law suits began based on their predictions.
So very obvious.
