My Predictions

Earlier, Allahpundit gave his predictions for the national race. I’m a bit more optimistic, especially given the movement over the last few days, but I’m more or less a born optimist anyway. I think John McCain will win a squeaker over Barack Obama, 273-265, by holding Florida, Nevada, and adding Pennsylvania as a trade for Virginia:

Note that I leave Minnesota in the blue column today, despite the virtual dead heat Survey USA shows in its final polling. As Jazz Shaw and James Joyner note, the RCP average shows Obama significantly ahead, but they include the Strib’s MinnPoll that routinely overstates Democratic strength. The same poll has Al Franken ahead of Norm Coleman by four points. Because of its structure, the RCP average lags on movement, and Survey USA shows some movement towards Republicans here — but I don’t think this is the election that moves Minnesota to the red column after 36 years of going blue.
I don’t think this is the election that puts Florida in the blue column, either, or Nevada. Early-vote polling didn’t show enough of an advantage for Obama, and now Republicans will make up the majority of poll-goers in both states. It really comes down to Virginia and Pennsylvania, and a split can favor either candidate. I think Pennsylvania has a real shot at going red, and Virginia’s a toss-up at this point. GOTV will make a difference, but so will those undecideds — and as I’ve said before, if that many people still haven’t made up their mind to vote Obama, then I expect most of them to take the safe fall-back position of McCain.
The Senate and the House look like a lock for Democrats, however. I expect to see a 57-43 split in the upper chamber, counting the independent caucusers for the Dems. In the House, Pelosi will marginally increase her majority to 237-198. There are just too many open Republican seats in this election, regardless of the narrowing of the generic Congressional balloting.
Win, lose, or draw, however, I’ll be broadcasting election results live at AM 1280 The Patriot tomorrow from 8-11 pm CT. We’ll have live chat and live video broadcasting during the returns. Be sure to tune in right here at Hot Air, where we will celebrate the finale of the most remarkable presidential election in my lifetime!

I agree with this EC Map. I think all the red states will stay red (with the exception of VA and CO) and he’ll take PA-thus producing a win. :)

I have 281 for McCain/Palin, 257 for Barry and Ol’ Foot-in-mouth.
nickj116 on November 3, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Everyone needs to go vote. The only way Obama wins is if you don’t vote. Hillary supporters have been through this time and again. It’s still the same poll companies who have been wrong by up to 20% and it’s still the same Obama voter suppression campaign that the math isn’t there. Hillary supporters are doing cartwheels if it’s less than 10%.
So anybody here that thinks McCain can’t do it is letting the MSM and the pollsters decide the election by you making those polls become a self fulfulling prophecy. PUMAs learned quickly that polls really don’t mean anything unless you actually believe them. Go on PUMA sites. They’re optimistic for a reason.
Polls really do mean nothing unless you believe them.
JUST GO VOTE, make calls, knock on doors and you’ll get 10-20% extra.

The mistake of the right this election cycle is that they assume that Obama folks and Dems don’t have this exact same attitude about winning the election this year. And I don’t blame the right because Dems were lackluster at best in 2000 and 2004, groping limply at the election and kind of running campaigns with no message or direction. But that’s not really happening this year and it’s time the right recognize that you can’t win an election on negation. You can’t win an election voting against something (John Kerry is your proof). You can’t win an election when it takes people more then ten seconds to answer the question “why should I vote for John McCain”?
I can’t really speak to your specific reasons for moving out of PA. But you’re just one individual and if you question the validity of polls to represent how most Americans feel, can we also admit that your anectodal example is even LESS representative than a poll of thousands? It’s time to accept it and figure out where conservatism goes next. I’ll be eager to see where this movement goes. It’s been the same thing for 30 years now and every movement needs a cleansing and rebuilding time. Now is that time for your side. Good luck!
DeathToMediaHacks on November 3, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Actually, the Electoral College is far more fair than a popular vote alone. If it was up to the popular vote alone, why would anyone in the heartland of the US, say N. Dakota want to be a participant in the union? At least the EC is a proportional vote.
Lets use AK as an example.
3 Electoral votes = 3/538 = about 0.5 % of the electorate.
Approximating this by using the total populations as proxies for registered voters, is more diluted, but you get the point…
670 K residents so 670 thousand/300 million = about 0.2% of the electorate.
Some states would be even worse off than AK in this system, such as WY, with 515K residents. Some states would be bigger juggernauts than under the EC. California would be 12% of the electorate instead of 10% as it is under the EC.
Neither is perfect, but I believe it is more fair to stick with the EC than go straight popular vote.

I’m optimistic-I called the election for McCain before he added Palin to the ticket. I really think Obama is not Presidential, no matter how much rhetoric proclaims him “The One” Skinny as he is, in this election he will be “The Biggest Loser”.

We have a much better chance of keeping Virginia then adding Pennsylvania.

Thanks for opening Comment Registration. Been waiting a long time for that.
I am very optimistic about a McCain win. I think the coal statement is the icing need on the cake. To many swing states are involved in coal.
The reaction to polls will be fun to watch much like the meltdown after the exit poll charade in ‘04.
Hogeye13 on November 3, 2008 at 12:18 PM
A lot has been said about the maybe/maybe not status of the younger vote. It’s true that Zer-O’s campaign appearances have been well attended by this group, but will they really show up at the polls and stand in line for what could be a lengthy time if there’s no free concert to get them there in the first place? Early voting trends seem to indicate the answer might be no.
LooseCannon on November 3, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I’m in east-central – south of I70.
We took a ride last weekend to Brown County to see the leaves and we saw McCain signs to Obama signs approximately 8:1. Is that your feeling?
Oink on November 3, 2008 at 12:18 PM
My other prediction is that this will be too close to call and the “winner” won’t be known until mid-January after all the lawsuits are settled.
Still think Obama will be the recognized and anoited “winner” by the media after 3 hours of election returns start coming in.

America is not a banana republic! We hate the media shoving THE ONE down our throats. WE LOVE THE CUDA! The polls over sample Dems, are not being told the truth by those being polled and there are tons of Dems that want THE MESSIAH to go down in flames. Adding to this are several ballot initiatives that will bring out many a Conservative/GOP voter. Obama has awakened the sleeping giant and that is normal, red, white, and blue American loving peoples! We hate socialism!
WE ARE GOING TO KICK OBAMA’S ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and in the immortal words of Manly, “BANK ON IT!”

One thing to consider: hysterical Obama supporters are far more likely to cooperate with pollsters. Conservatives/Republicans are, in my experience, far more guarded in their public profession of election choice. Could this mean the polls are all skewed? Probably. Democrats traditionally poll higher then Republicans because of their edge in registration and the sampling pools.
sladenyv on November 3, 2008 at 12:22 PM
‘Fairness” is a red herring.
We have an EC because this country is a Union of States and the electoral process represents the will of individual states to cooperatively elect an executive officer. The Electoral College is the very backbone of Federalism and it is one of the last roadblocks we have to Statism.
Lehosh on November 3, 2008 at 12:22 PM
As much as I want PA to flip, I’m not 100% confident. I am confident that VA will stay red. I think Colorado will stay red as well, and I’m keeping a half eye at Iowa.
SouthernGent on November 3, 2008 at 12:22 PM
The frickin’ Cincinnati Bengals won yesterday. Clearly, cats are sleeping with dogs.
Two weeks ago, I was at the end of a very long rope over McCain’s campaign. But just enough stuff has hit at the right time (Joe the Plumber and Plumbergate, the 2001 audio, Khalidi, Acorn, Coal-gate, Palin really taking off, Catholic priests weighing in around the country, you name it), I just have a feeling that McCain (Moses) with his mouthpiece Palin (Aaron) has parted the Red Sea and led enough of us slogging through the seabed and tomorrow the sea is going to come crashing down on Obama and his soldiers.
Given all that’s out on Obama and given all the undecideds, I have to believe they’re saying, “Who is Obama?” And with McCain, they know he’s not Bush and, indeed, is more capable of keeping us safe while economic matters work themselves out. Besides, Obama is just too creepy.
I think Obama is going to pay a second time for the things he’s said about Keystone staters. In the end, I just don’t see enough whites who are willing to sell their souls to Obama for a $500 or $1,000 refundable tax credit.

oink, we are south west of brown county but trek to bloomington occasionally and to jasper and by my count mccain signs are 2:1 over obama. jasper has a lot of obama signs and so does bloomington. which of course skews my positive polls.

When Karl Rove said McCain had a “tall hill to climb” the other day, I knew it was over. And looking at today’s polls just confirmed my fears.
How this country can elect a Marxizt/Black Nationalist for president is frightening. I am 58, and for the first time in my life, I fear for our country.
Joe Pyne on November 3, 2008 at 12:25 PM
Not surprising about Bloomington considering IU and academia. I just don’t know about Jasper. Didn’t Jasper just lose a manufacturing plant within the last year?

I’ve always said that this is Obama’s election to lose. McCain has the previous 8 years against him, plus the entire media, and that’s a steep hill to climb.
That said, Biden and Obama have been doing their part in destroying their chances. Everytime they opened their mouths off teleprompter, they stepped into it. Is it enough to tip the scales to McCain? I honestly don’t know.
I’m optimistic that McCain will win, similar in calculation to Ed’s predictions (except I don’t see Virgina turning), but I’m not going to be surprised if Obama wins.
I just hope that people have wised up to the lies being told on the left, and self-responsibility overcomes the desire to hold a hand out and expect a ‘fair share.’
Enoxo on November 3, 2008 at 12:34 PM
Obama will be elected president with the major help of socialists and communists which are now called “radicals”.
Then, the communist dogs will want for Obama to payback to them for the help they provided the racist Obama by initiating the big communist take over of the country.

McCain = 281
Obama = 257
McCain wins : Fl, Va, Oh, PA, IN, MO, NC
Obama wins : CO, NV, NM, IO, NH
*** I feel the most telling information is the HUGE number of folks that are “NOT” responding to polsters… Obama fans SCREAM that they are for Obama, McCain fans sit back and read, watch, observe and then VOTE! We don’t want to be called redneck racists, so we just WIN IT AT THE POLLS, not “in” the polls! Why should anyone believe these polsters, they had it WRONG in the primaries, WRONG in the last two elections and they are WRONG this time with the HUGE advantage they are giving the Democrates in “weight”! So for my opinion, we DRAG McCain to victory to save our COURTS, our TALK RADIO, prevent a CIVILIAN DEFENSE FORCE, protect our MILITARY FROM HUGE CUTS and we PRESERVE THE BILL OF RIGHTS and CONSTITUTION!
Go VOTE, and may God Bless America, my home sweet home!

Good and very valid point, so let me explain a bit further.
It is a bit of a red hering, but I use the fairness argument when I bump into those folks who seem to think that Electoral College is broken and the popular vote is better. They seem to grasp a “fairness” approach at the state level and is my backdoor way of trying to get them to realize this is a UNION and States are the backbone of the Nation.
Unfortunately, not everyone seems to be on the same level of understanding.
Its kind of like trying to explain why the Hadron collider has been postulated to form a black hole by the nutballs of the world. Not everyone is familiar with the concepts of matter and energy, even at the highschool chemistry level.
It really bodes poorly for the state of the American education system. You have to take baby steps before you can run.

I said a month ago I thought their could be an electoral tie and I am still holding on to that. The key to my tie scenario is Obama winning Nevada — which I think will happen.
There is so much noise going into the last day though. This issue with Obama’s coal comments may wind up biting him. Had the tape gotten out a week ago I’d give the entire coal belt to McCain but it may be a bit late.
My main concern is Pennsylvania. McCain focused there because he felt Virginia was lost. I can’t see Ed Rendell not being able to deliver PA to Obama but between Murtha, Obama’s tax issues with >$100K earners and now coal, even Fast Eddie may not be able to come through.
BTW, conspiracy theorists — Rendell may half-heartedly work his machine. The Rendells and the Clintons love each other and remember, an Obama loss tomorrow makes a Clinton win in 2012 more likely.

When the world is saying not to
By God, you know you’ve got to march on, boys
Never hold back your step for a moment
Look alive! Oh, your courage will grow
Yes, it’s higher and higher and into the fire we go
Into fire!
Onward, ho!

The fact that Obama is leading in any poll, other than Vermont and Massachusetts, is shocking. If this were 1988, he would be down 25 points or more in all the polls.
We have a classic case of the frog in the kettle syndrome here in the U.S.
