Just a reminder: The exit polls can’t be trusted
posted at 12:45 pm on November 3, 2008 by Allahpundit
For a simple reason: They oversample Democrats, and are even more likely to do so this year thanks to enthusiasm among The One’s cultists. Per Geraghty, 77 percent of Obama’s supporters say they’re willing to spend 10 minutes answering an exit poll questionnaire versus just 64 percent of McCain’s. No matter what’s happening on the ground, then, expect The One to have a large-ish lead when the data finally drops at 5 p.m. tomorrow. If he doesn’t, things could get interesting.
Even the networks don’t trust them in isolation anymore:
[T]he networks now follow strict rules that govern projections, examining not only exit poll data but actual vote tabulation and turnout information. NBC — which keeps its decision desk isolated from the calls made by competing networks — will only call a winner once its statisticians conclude that the chance of an error is less than 1 in 200. And no calls will be made until all the polls have closed in a state…
[E]xit polls are designed to provide a demographic portrait of voters, not to predict the winner of a close race. The early waves of data can be especially misleading because they do not necessarily reflect an accurate sample of the electorate.
This year, there’s another factor to take into account: the huge surge in early voting. To get a measurement of those voters, Edison/Mitofsky has been doing an extensive telephone survey in the last week, focusing on the 18 states with the highest concentration of absentee and early voting.
For all the precautions, the networks’ decision desks will still be analyzing the exit poll with some wariness. In both 2004 and 2006, the polls overstated the Democratic vote in many states. Because of that, Fox News stopped relying on the data halfway through election night in 2006, declaring it unreliable.
A similar problem cropped up during this year’s primaries, when exit polls often showed a greater lead for Sen. Barack Obama than the actual vote, decision desk directors said.
The exit polling firm’s being sequestered until the fateful hour — no cell phones or Blackberries allowed — so if you see a “leak” somewhere on the ‘Net in the early afternoon hours, “Don’t be hoodwinked. Don’t be bamboozled. Don’t fall for the okey-doke.” If you missed yesterday’s post about poll closings, read it now for scheduling purposes. First-round games in Indiana and Virginia begin at 7 p.m., followed by Ohio and North Carolina at 7:30.

Exit polls are the worst. They only take into account those willing to say whom they voted for.
Absolutely meaningless…
JetBoy on November 3, 2008 at 12:47 PM
I don’t trust exit polls any more than I do regular polls, for the same reason that I suggested in another post elsewhere on Hotair: they always skew and bias toward Dems. That’s why this supposed Obama Juggernaut is a myth. If he wins, it will be close.

I’m not even going to watch election coverage. I don’t have the stomach for it. If we win, I’ll be shocked and amazed, and glad that I didn’t sit through hours and hours of people explaining why Barack Obama is going to win, no matter what.
If we lose, well then I’ll be glad I didn’t have to watch anyone gloat.
jimmy the notable on November 3, 2008 at 12:49 PM
And all of the other polls do this same thing. There’s nothing special about exit polls in this respect. Then there are all the fraudulent dem registrations which get thrown into the polling weightings – in addition to polling orgs’ “desires”.
progressoverpeace on November 3, 2008 at 12:50 PM
If I get exit polled, I’m proudly saying who I voted for. That said, I wouldn’t trust them.
Personally, I think this election will take until December to resolve itself.
Chaz706 on November 3, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Conservatives always play their hand closer to the chest, and therefore are less willing to talk about who they’ve voted for. I’m not surprised liberals are more likely to answer these polls.

How come the MSM doesn’t have the time to talk about the hatefulness of the Obama rallies? Laughs and derision at even the mention of his name. This is like an angry mob people. Shame on Obama for appealing to such base emotions. Shame.
Obama is a narcissist, of course he hates McCain for making him wait for his coronation.

With the polls swinging wildly up and down none of the “statistics” can be trusted. I’ve seen internals and the current polls are about as far away from reality as can be. The lying polls heavily influenced by the left are designed to influence confused voters and suppress turnout on the right. Believe me, the internals look VERY, VERY good.
angrywonk on November 3, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Ugh… Everyone gets this wrong. Indiana does not close at 7. It closes at 6, along with Kentucky.
Mayhem on November 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Does anyone actually think that polls actually determine the possible outcome? They only serve, at best, to generate news and conversation, but considering that all polls are suspect to human error and bias they’ll always be inherently flawed.
Aurvant on November 3, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Polls are Statistics, and we all know what Twain (or Disraeli) said…
“There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics”
Most polls have a margin of error calculated at the 95 % confidence interval, so based on that, at least two, and probably three state results will come outside the margin of error, and that assumes a perfectly random sample, which political polls certainly do not have.
It will be an interesting night…

No poll can be trusted. If R turnout and D turnout is different by 4% or less Mac wins nicely.
Listen, as long as we blitz the polls, phones and get out the vote. We will win. McCain has had a perfect strategy for the last 2 and a half weeks. He has all of the enrgy and attention. Obama, has been sliding since JTP. He did this in the primary, he thought he had it and played ball control. And each time, NH,TX,PA,OH,SD, and so on. He has just been on the radar and that is his strategy.
McCain/Palin have had a steady drip of obama assoctiations. Then JTP. Then the redistributive audio. On tuesday the mccain teams plan will reach a crescendo on the 4th with our help. Mccain/Palin between the 2 are making 12 stops today.

Polls are used to encourage and discourage voters. If the exits show a massive Obama landslide it could cause some Republicans in Western States not to vote as they assume their vote will not make a difference.

It’s gonna be hilarious.
Fozzy Bear on November 3, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Just as I was saying…this info also applies to online polling. This means the hang-ups (people who don’t answer polls, which are at least 85% of all polling calls) are mostly McCain supporters. This changes the quality of polling samples drastically, and would mean that McCain actually has a lead of at least 10%!
All the more reason for us to GO OUT THERE AND VOTE!

Polls smolls.
Over the couse of the last decade or so. Many conservatives overwise known as “The Silent Majority” have started the trend of either not participating in the exit polls and the constant stream of polls when they get a phone call at home.
One thing many of the pollsters don’t tell you is the percentage of refusal to participate. That number has risen to astronomical numbers.
Just look at the last election. Weeks and days before the election everybody was calling the election for Kerry. Kerry had a comfortable lead that on most polls shrunk to “Within the margin of error.” That was to save what little reputation the pollsters had left.
Four years later…nothing much have changed… The media is even more in the tank for the Democrat. But the lies remain.
This will come down to the Get Out The Vote effort. If the conservative base shows up, if The Silent Majority shows up, McCain/Palin will win the race, easily, not a slim win but a comfortable win. There is a reason that the Obama campaign has done what it can to supress the vote…..they are scared, their internal polls are telling them what is coming.
I have faith in my fellow Americans. Just get out there and VOTE, VOTE what is in your heart.
TheShaz on November 3, 2008 at 1:00 PM

right2bright on November 3, 2008 at 1:01 PM
Aurvant…ditto. The bias is also skewed because most conservative-types don’t want to waste time with a glad-handing, smarmy pollster. Get back to work is my mind-set, as with most conservatives. Or get home, if I’m late voting, and spend time with the kids. Nor do I know many conservatives who will suffer a telephone survey…mis-pronounce my name, you’re done. And they all do…it ain’t Smith (no offense to Smiths everywhere…)
hbinva on November 3, 2008 at 1:02 PM
If the pollsters believe we’re going to have a historic turnout, why do they over-sample Democrats? Wouldn’t a historic turnout mathematically require a huge Republican turnout? It’s illogical.
(My questions are semi-rhetorical.)

If exit poll response rate is 77% Obama vs. 64% McCain then exit polls over/under-state a 50/50 race as 54.6% to 45.4%. So look for exit poll error between 4-5% against McCain.

carbon_footprint on November 3, 2008 at 1:06 PM
The MSM will not be any more cautious about creating narratives around the exit polls than they were in 2004.
In fact, they will shamelessly use the exit polls as a device to suppress conservative votes even more now than ever.
Plus there is that built-in competitive drive within the MSM to call states before the other networks.
Combined, these agendas will have the MSM well beyond calling it for Obama and into conversations about his first State of the Union Address.
nitzsche on November 3, 2008 at 1:06 PM
A sizable percentage of the Democrats who voted so far as well as those who will vote tommorrow are PUMAs and Hillaryites. The remaining independents will fall to the right and vote for McCain.
This is what the pollsters are overlooking in the public polls. The internals paint a different picture and it is this picture that the campaigns are looking at.
Team Obama is scared out of their wits.

This election is going to be more fun to watch that 1994, when Peter Jennings said “America is having a temper tantrum tonight” and the new GOP house majority just kept getting bigger as the night wore on.
When Penn State, Ohio State and Florida go red on Tuesday night, it’s only going to take 1 more state out of Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Minnesota or Iowa to clinch the McCain Palin victory.
And what happens if the Senate ends up still at 49/49/2? Will Joltin Joe switch then? Stay tuned.

Not just election polls, but expect a replay of Kerry with heavily slanted election coverage depicting an full on landslide in States where Obama’s trampled.
I’d like to see the McCain attorneys get to work tomorrow, giving Obama some of his same medicine and getting his name thrown OFF the ballot in any district where he took illegal campaign donations, or his campaign, and advocates registered illegal votes. After all, that is how Obama won his first seat anyway. He took a team of attorneys and got all his opponents thrown out on technicalities. Forget birth certificates, this is the way to fight him. Obama has not played by the books, and turning the other way is foolish.
As a longtime Democrat voting on the other side for the first time, I urge you to play as dirty as they will, because they feel entitled.

“Exit polls can’t be trusted”
Sheesh, i don’t believe it, the exit polls were spot on in 2004.
I mean, sure, they were wrong in predicting a Kerry win in Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Iowa, & New Mexico, and they grossly overstated Kerry support in like 45 states (PA 60-40 was really 51-49), but other than that, the 04 exits were GOLDEN.

None of the polls can be trusted 100%, because all of their sampling models are based on the premise that there will be more Democrats voting this year than Republicans hence they end up over sampling democrats in their polls. The only problem is that thanks to massive registration fraud perpetrated by groups like ACORN there is no real way of telling exactly what the Democrat turnout will be especially when you throw Democrat anti Obama groups like PUMA into the mix.
The other thing that throws the polls out is the fact that thanks to Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber the Republican base is coming out to vote in force with some predictions that the turnout might be bigger than in 2004.
Ether way its going to be an interesting day tomorrow and it wouldn’t surprise me if we see some upsets occurring.
Dreadnought223 on November 3, 2008 at 1:17 PM
So, assuming a 50-50 election, you would get 77 Obama vs. 64 McCain in a sample of 141. Percentage-wise, that’s 54.6% to 45.4%, or a 9.2% pro-Obama bias in the exit polls.
I saw one article saying that even Gallup gets about a 90% hangup rate, meaning that they need to call 10,000 people to get a 1,000-person sample. If the hangup rate was 90% for Obama supporters and 91% for McCain supporters, this would bias the results by 5% for Obama!
Not to mention the fact that even a well-done exit poll does not poll absentee voters, who were 10% of the Florida electorate in 2000. Note to late voters: Your vote counts, even if it comes after an exit poll shows the other guy winning. Remember Florida 2000!

Its pretty obvious that he did. This was no mistake – it was downright blatant. This guy is unbelievable.
I wonder if it will even hit any of the MSM outside of FoxNews? Not holding breath…

Just a quick reminder for those of you worried about the predictive ability of Intrade: In the New Hampshire primary, they had Obama 99 vs 1 for Hillary.

Here is some simple math that will help: Obama over polls by 7%, on average, in the exit polls. If you have exit poll data tomorrow, then add 7% to McCain’s tally – BOOM, the actual result.
For example, “exit polls” in Florida have Obama up by 1%. Therefore, McCain takes the state by 6%.
