Fox/Rasmussen battleground polls: Tightening

posted at 6:15 pm on November 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Allahpundit covered the national polling from Fox and Rasmussen in his earlier post, and now a somewhat contradictory set of numbers have come out of the battleground states.  The state polls show some hope for McCain yet in the states he needs to win tomorrow.  Fox has yet to write its story, so let’s just peruse the toplines ourselves from the data.

  • Colorado – Obama leads 51/47, after last week’s 50/46.  Within the MOE, but not much movement.
  • Florida – McCain lead 50/49, after trailing 51/47 last week.  Definitely moving towards McCain.
  • Missouri – Dead heat at 49 all, after Obama led 48/47 last week.  Movement to McCain.
  • North Carolina – McCain 50/49, after being up 49/48 last week.
  • Ohio – Tied at 49, after Obama led 49/45 last week.  Movement to McCain.
  • Virginia – Obama leads 51/47, same as last week.

Interestingly, Fox didn’t poll in Pennsylvania, or the results are not yet ready.  In any case, those states with movement show it going to McCain, and he’s no longer trailing anywhere except Colorado and Virginia.  Undecideds are going to McCain, and the battlegrounds appear to be firming up red.  Of course, these are all states Bush carried in 2004, and to balance possible losses in Colorado and Virginia — still too close to call — McCain will need Pennsylvania.

I hope McCain wins.

However, if he does win…I would pay money to see the look on your guys’ faces when he announces Ted Kennedy and Lindsey Graham as head of a new task force on immigration; Senator Feingold as head of department of public financing and the curtailment of free speech, and as Joe Lieberman as the head of the Department of picking supreme court judges that ALL the senators could get behind (not just the dumb conservative ones) and in an attempt to reach across the aisle and make everybody feel good, promise to consult with Senator Obama on all important domestic and foreign issues.

And Palin…McCain will put her in charge of a new task force in charge of finding a cure for autism…never to be heard from again.

I’m hoping for a McCain Minnesota surprise too. Was up in the third ring northern suburbs and there was not an Obama sign to be seen for miles.

gophergirl on November 3, 2008 at 6:23 PM

I’m hoping too. My parents live in an established neighborhood in Minnetonka. The Obama people were first to put up their signs–mainly due to one persistent neighbor. But the McCain supporters have come out and put up signs within the last few weeks. That area now is about 60-40 Obama. I live in MPLS and it’s a disaster. That said, I am hoping that Northern Minnesota will reject Obama in the end. We’ll see.

McCain is walloping Obama in yardsignage here in Central VA. I don’t recall seeing so many yard signs for a presidential candidate. Not in 2000, 2004 or 1996. Hell, I saw more Kerry signs in ‘04 than Bush signs here in Central VA.

Oh, more McCain bumperstickers, too.

The McCain people have been Downtown Minneapolis religiously these last few weeks – today they had a trailer with t-shirts, cutouts of McCain and other stuff they were giving away if you made one phonecall. The crowd there was very encouraging for Minneapolis.

I am more nervous about Coleman – after the Ventura debacle we can’t elect another doofus – we just can’t.

Please, don’t even one person take this for granted. Make sure you get at least one more person to vote and ask them to do the same. I am worried about the polls and the opinions of respected pundits like Mike Boron but that will all be meaningless if every one of us gets at least one more person to vote (and convince them to do the same). I hope Rush will make a dispassionate plea for this tomorrow.
Consider composing a brief email and send it to as many people in you address books as possible. We really will need every vote we can get.

right2bright, I’ve been saying for a long time that whenever Obama’s team acts like it’s in the bag, it shows panic to me. It’s like they have to put up a front even when there is loads of evidence pointing to the opposite.

MobileVideoEngineer on November 3, 2008 at 6:49 PM

Or it’s more like this:

Our goal is to create chaos with the other side, not hope. I’ve come to the realization (as the campaign already has) that if this comes to the issues, Barack Obama doesn’t have a chance. His only chance is to foster disorganization, chaos, despair, and a sense of inevitability among the Republicans.

You’ve got PUMAs voting and actively canvassing for McCain. You’ve got Dems that aren’t as far left as Obama voting for McCain. You’ve even got Libertarians now trying to get McCain voted in because Obama is so remote from their platform. Independents are breaking for McCain.

Bachmann’s going to be a barn burner; we won’t know until quite late. Washington and Anoka Counties are pretty fickle. Coleman’s fine. Endorsed by basically every newspaper. The Barkley supporters look like they’ll stay with their guy. The thing you should really be concerned about is the Minnesota House. If Anderson Kelliher gets five more seats, she’s got a veto proof majority along with the Senate. Our taxes will go up next session, guaranteed.

FYI: PA has gone, on average, about 5% more “blue” than the country at large in every presidential election since 1948.
(example: Bush won US popular vote by about 2.5% in ‘04 but Kerry won PA by about 2.5% = 5% difference)

I fear that there is just so much chaos (and we know who it benefits), that it will be impossible to track all the fraud down and make it right… not to mention we’d have blacks rioting in the streets if we challenge and draw it out (which I suspect McCain doesn’t have the balls to do anyway).

irongrampa on November 3, 2008 at 7:26 PM

This tics me off: Just heard on Fox (of all places)a correspondant (not sure who, was cooking dinner at the time) that “Obama is leading by 1% in early voting.”
The reason I’m tic’ed [of course y'all know this but the masses don't] is that what he should have said is that those who identify themselves as Democrats lead those that identify themselves as republicans are 1% more. A very, very important difference. I’m thinkin’ AT LEAST, AT LEAST 10% of those early voting dems are voting Mc-Cuda. Very heartening, but still tics me off. Once again, blowout, but vote, vote, vote. Am voting very early and driving straight to Mc-Cuda HQ here in St. Louis County, MO to offer my humble services.

Hillary dems are NOT PUMA. PUMA are Hillary Dems that are not supporting Obama. Between 20% and 50% of Hillary Dems are PUMA. And over 20% (some estimate 30%) of Hillary Dems will vote for Obama. That’s minimum 4 million voters if you only account for those that voted in the primaries. But because they take votes away from Obama, their effect is double! And trust me, there are MANY more PUMAs than this.

They have already bussed into OH, PA (they have their own offices specifically and only for PUMAs called Democrats for McCain and they have their own signs, the white ones), NV (bussing in from California), etc. to knock on doors and GOTV activities.

And many other PUMAs around the states are active on the phone banks. They are very coordinated. Basically, most of Hillary’s operation has moved into the McCain camp because they invested time and effort. These aren’t just voters, they were on the ground or making calls. That’s why they are upset at Obama. All their effort was for naught when they found out the fix was in.

PUMA are VERY optimistic right now. Go on Hillbuzz (as mentioned by Rush) or pumapac or other sites and see for yourself.

Anyways, Republicans need to vote. This is about Republicans and voting for McCain. You have everything you need to win. Obama’s only plan during the primaries was to supress the vote. The more people that voted, the worse Obama did. Remember that. It was a constant in the primaries. Turnout was EVERYTHING!

MrX on November 3, 2008 at 7:28 PM

As a citizen of Lee’s Summit I must take issue with Joe Bidens slight gaffe this afternoon when he paid us a little visit. Lee’s Summit is not named Lee’s Summit because it is the highest point between Kansas City and St. Louis. It is named after Dr. Lea a physician who lived here I believe in the late 1800’s. The spelling difference is attributed to railroad signs that were made at the time that mis-spelled his name. Very minor detail but us little peons here in Lee’s Summit like to keep our history straight.

Strange, I just sat here and re-read my own post…

I have tears flowing down my face…

I’m a 48 y/o man, a Hunter, a former Baseball All-Star in collage, and I’m crying like a school-girl!

God I love America!

I have tried all my adult life to pass that love for Country, for Flag, for the GREATNESS that is America on to my only Son who is 16 and wants to join the Marines.

I have never in my life felt fear, passion, committment, pride, joy, aggony, hurt, elation, angst and every verb in our language the way I feel it tonight…

We are at THAT MOMENT, the CROSSROADS, the LINE HAS BEEN DRAWN IN THE SAND for me and my wonderful Wife of 24 years.

Our Nation, America and truly the FREE WORLD is counting on ALL FREEDOM LOVING PEOPLES TO UNITE, TO STAND TALL, TO WIN!

PUMAS, REGAN DEMS, CONSERVATIVES, RHINO’s, INDEPENDANTS!!!

When we win tomorrow night, we will DRINK A TOAST TO FREEDOM that will live on for the ages, we will have TURNED BACK the darkness of purpose, the repression of class envy, the radicals in our midst! The Constitution will remain the goal of ALL FREE MEN. OF ALL OPPRESSED, OF GENERATIONS TO COME! The great deads of our blessed Country will shine thru the night, for ALL THE WORLD TO SEE that the SHINING CITY ON THE HILL is still there…

I have dried my tears, wiped away my fears, DEFEAT IS NOT AN OPTION! Tomorrow, the sun will rise and the battle will be joined…

Mark Garnett on November 3, 2008 at 7:38 PM

Wouldn’t it be funny if all these voters from “safe states” who left to vote in swing states wound up throwing the race in their respective safe states? Imagine if NY went red because of them. I know it would never happen, but I would probably pee myself if it did.

McCain’s campaign put out a memo about exit polling and it’s on Drudge.

MobileVideoEngineer on November 3, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Wouldn’t it be just super fun for the media to STFU about exit polling and just give us the actual poll results tomorrow night? I hate the media. I really do. We live in a microwave society where everyone wants everything in 30 seconds or less.

Oink on November 3, 2008 at 7:42 PM

Oh, and Mark Garnett, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your post! Way to fire up the troops! I love America too, and your post embodies that love superbly. Amazingly, this election has shown me how much I do love this country and how I/we will fight to the very end for the values this country was founded upon. I guess you have to come close to losing something to realize how much it means to you.

If the polls are all you are following, then you aren’t going to have much to dance about tomorrow night when Obama gets shellacked by McCain. Pehaps they can hire you to dance at J-Mac’s inaugural ball. That would be lovely.

Aww Manly, now you ruined it. I thought it was kind of funny how everyone was literally ignoring that person. People weren’t even saying “ignore the trolls” they were just literally ignoring them.

MobileVideoEngineer on November 3, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Whoa, ManlyRash, you are quite the alpha dog, aren’t you?

Out of curiousity, do you brag to your weenie pals about how you rule the Hot Air comments pages?

How often do you masturbate to Rush’s booming voice?

NewDayRising on November 3, 2008 at 7:49 PM

*whistles* – NewDayRising on November 3, 2008 at 7:39 PM

Gosh, NDR. For an astroturfer you aren’t very subtle. Can you whistle “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again“? It’s the song you’ll be forced to hear over and over again for the next 4 years. I suggest you start learning the tune while McCain gives his acceptance speech.

Perhaps you can whistle it while you dance at the Inaugural Ball. I hear it’s one of Dick Cheney’s favorite tunes.

ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 7:50 PM

I’ve often said that liberals exist to prove that stupidity is, indeed, painless.

New Day Risinf provides an excellent case in point.

Gotta be more polite there, NDR, as you have now gone from astroturfer to troll. And Allah doesn’t like trolls – especially the impolite ones.

It would be a shame if you got banned before letting us know what dance you’ll be performing for President McCain.

ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 7:53 PM

FWIW I believe that we must keep up the spirits of people who live out west because the media is going to spin east coast results towards Nobama. The polls stating that my home state of Georgia is now a toss-up are a joke. There is absolutely no way that Georgia elects Nobama. However, I fully expect that Georgia will not be called until 10:00 pm at the earliest. I think that we will see this with the other eastern states that are being called toss-ups but will break for McCain. For more anecdotal evidence, my wife who has voted democrat for the last 20 years (nullifying my vote) voted republican this year when we voted early last week.

I’d have made a lousy soldier. If handed a weapon and ordered to charge at the enemy I would have handed it back and said, “Are you farking kidding me? They’re shooting at us. I could get killed!” :-)

Thanks Annetteharrell, we are NOT alone!

When the MSM starts “calling it early” tomorrow, we will reply, “WE HAVE NOT BEGUN TO FIGHT”!

When the pundants saying “it’s over”, we will reply “REMEMBER THE ALAMO”!

When the far left yells “we’ve won this”, we will reply, “NUTS”!

We are NEVER done with the fight for FREEDOM, it is bought with a heavy price that the far left wack jobs will NEVER understand…

McCain, no! America will WIN tomorrow…

It’s now quite obvious that Fox, IBD and Rasmussen are all in the tank for Barrack HUSSEIN Obama.

Oh, but wait, the accepted script on these pages a couple of days ago was that all the drive-by polls were going to tighten in these last days to reflect the correct polls.

I wonder what that socialist bastard did to get all those organizations in the tank for him?

NewDayRising on November 3, 2008 at 8:00 PM

We’re “Stillers” people here, but might have to pull for the Native Americans tonight for trends’ sake. Roethlisberger, Wurzelbacher: the Germans do make good stuff as someone said during the Shamwow infomercial.

hoosiermama on November 3, 2008 at 8:01 PM

It’s official. I hate the Fox All Stars. I hate Kondracke and Nina Easton most of all. What’s the point of a conservative network if on the eve of a truly, close election, all Fox’s “pundits” give Mccain virtually No chance of pulling this out?! Seriously. I might as well have been watching MSNBC. There’s no way I’m turning them on tomorrow until sometime after eight. Do they think they know something we don’t? Even Brit Hume had zero positive points. They didn’t even mention how tight the states were- I wish I hadn’t even turned it on.

Heh. Y’know I used to live in St. Louis, Bruno, and it was more than a few times people asked me if I was from Canada! I grew up in Minnetonka and I never noticed that I had an accent. Yeah, I don’t know about the Range. They don’t mind socialism, e.g. Oberstar. But they are culturally conservative. They did vote for Grams that one year. I just wished Sarah would’ve done one rally in Duluth and hit home that hockey mom persona. That said, if Mac is to win MN, he needs Obama’s numbers to be down up there. Do you know anyone there? Are they as apprehensive as the folks in PA?

America’s choice:

A) an honorable fighter pilot who suffered for his country and wishes to preserve the greatest land ever to rise on Earth and its core liberties, or:

B) a three-faced crypto-Marxist weasel, who throws anyone under his Bus (”typical white woman” and now late Granny or Crackpot Preacher Wright or “guy from my neighborhood” domestic terrorist Ayers, or nutso-Negro-wannabe Father Pfleger, ad nauseam) if it furthers his naked-grab-for-raw-power agenda aimed at undermining the nation in favor of a global socialistic Utopian folly.

How is this even close?
