Fox/Rasmussen battleground polls: Tightening

posted at 6:15 pm on November 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Allahpundit covered the national polling from Fox and Rasmussen in his earlier post, and now a somewhat contradictory set of numbers have come out of the battleground states.  The state polls show some hope for McCain yet in the states he needs to win tomorrow.  Fox has yet to write its story, so let’s just peruse the toplines ourselves from the data.

  • Colorado – Obama leads 51/47, after last week’s 50/46.  Within the MOE, but not much movement.
  • Florida – McCain lead 50/49, after trailing 51/47 last week.  Definitely moving towards McCain.
  • Missouri – Dead heat at 49 all, after Obama led 48/47 last week.  Movement to McCain.
  • North Carolina – McCain 50/49, after being up 49/48 last week.
  • Ohio – Tied at 49, after Obama led 49/45 last week.  Movement to McCain.
  • Virginia – Obama leads 51/47, same as last week.

Interestingly, Fox didn’t poll in Pennsylvania, or the results are not yet ready.  In any case, those states with movement show it going to McCain, and he’s no longer trailing anywhere except Colorado and Virginia.  Undecideds are going to McCain, and the battlegrounds appear to be firming up red.  Of course, these are all states Bush carried in 2004, and to balance possible losses in Colorado and Virginia — still too close to call — McCain will need Pennsylvania.

McCain will need Pennsylvania.

And he will win the general election. Expect to see several blue states voting in ways you would never have imagined possible.

No way Va. votes for Obama.

Not gonna happen. That poll is just dead wrong.

DrW on November 3, 2008 at 6:21 PM

I’m not rebutting Allahpundit; he got it right in his post. Fox’s numbers seem to be showing different trends when looking at state polls as opposed to national polls. This could be an effect of polling in big Obama states, such as California and New York, where increased support will have no real bearing on the Electoral College outcome.

Ed Morrissey on November 3, 2008 at 6:21 PM

If Obama loses it will be the biggest choke job in American political history. If Minny & Iowa aren’t called for The One out of the gate there’s a chance Mac could pull this off…

HornetSting on November 3, 2008 at 6:22 PM

Ed,

The redstates of FL, CO, VA, NC etc are redstates. Yes they are now battlegrounds but they have been redstates. It will be harder for Obama to switch a redstate to a blue state. Much like the effort to flip Pa for McCain. Doable but still hard. so those that think it is an easy event for Obama to turn a red state blue does not understand. this election is not over not be a long shot.

Also no blue state polls I wonder why? If the media reported that MN, NH, PA, IW where within the MOE would the MSM talking points be different?

To that effect, he should declare in clear and uncertain terms that an undefeated Penn State football team must be in the BCS championship game.

Alright, seriously, screw polls. Forget rationality just for today and tomorrow. I get hope and then lose it. This election has filled me with a lingering sense of joy and dread.

Achilles on November 3, 2008 at 6:25 PM

Okay, last post before making my phone calls for my party…This is the news that Obama had in his camp.
Like I have been posting, all day, a relative is a big wig in the internet area of Obama…he has stated that the Obama camp has been in a panic mode all day, they are stunned by some internals they received over the weekend (he didn’t see them, but feels the effect). They are stunned and are relying on the Republicans not voting. They are in shock, now we have to “put them dogs down”.
I have a feeling the internals are worse then these numbers. The statement he heard “We don’t have enough time to turn this around”…big MO has shifted.
Their only hope is to keep the “we have this in the bag” schtick going.
I think Florida is going to be a big shocker, and I know they have all but given up on PA, however Obama may go there tomorrow as a change of plans.
They are on the run…now let’s run to the booth and vote.

As Missouri goes so goes the nation.
In the last 26 elections Missouri has picked the winner 25 times. The exception was in 1956, when America went for Dwight Eisenhower, a popular Republican war hero, in a landslide. Missourians gave it to Adlai Stevenson, a cerebral Democrat from neighboring Illinois.

They have a 97% rate of accuracy.

Entelechy on November 3, 2008 at 6:21 PM

Thats the sense Im getting. Understand how votes are counted it isnt a national database or even a state one. Counties of each state collect and register the votes and send them in.

So the local county boards will be counting the votes. Many of them are good solid conservatives and will be on the look out for vote fraud. Thats why for example the liberals targeted the County I’m in for vote registrationas its run by democrats.

I think Obama might win places like Toledo or Cincinnatti or Cleveland but lose the rest of ohio.

Don’t forget that Obama’s campaign head honcho is advertising extaordinaire David Axelrod. The advertiser’s job is to convince you to buy that which you DO NOT NEED. Seems like he’s got some buyers. We’ll see tomorrow how good of an advertiser Axelrod actually is. How many will buy the Brand New & Improved Soap???

I hate to admit this, but I’ve never voted before. No one in my family has never voted and I just wasn’t raised a political person. But this past year, I’ve been getting a major education due to HotAir and Michelle Malkin and I’m confident that I’m informed enough to make the right decision.

So tomorrow, for the first time in my life, I’ll be voting. Most importantly, I’ll be voting for McCain.

Oh, and I’m in Northern Virginia so you can count two more red votes. My boyfriend moved here from Maryland so he’s a new voter here as well.

I honestly don’t think Obama will win Virgina. When Webb (a conservative, confederate flag waving Dem) could barely squeak out a win against George “Macaca” Allen in the horrible GOP year of 2006, I doubt Barack “Most Liberal Senator” Obama could do it in a year where the conservative base is much more energized. I also see McCain doing much better in PA than Bush in ‘04, when Kerry won with just 2.5%. Murtha, Obama’s “bitter clinger” comments, the Obama coal fiasco and other factors will guarantee that. If McCain where to win these two states, while holding onto FL, MO and OH (which the Rasmussen figures appear to be indicating) he can loose CO, NM, NV and still win comfortably.

Obama just can’t close the deal.

I go with Dick Morris, who has always said if people aren’t for Obama before Nov. 4, they will be for McCain in the booth. There’s enough distrust out there.

The coal stuff should swing Virginia, Pennsylvania and possibly Colorado.

And don’t have a heart attack if California goes to McCain as well due to Prop 8. It’s an outside chance, but polls only show Obama up 8%, while early voting was even for Repub/Dems.

Get everybody out to vote and we can pull this off.

People continue to suggest that Obama might lose due to the “Bradley effect”, which is white people telling the pollsters they are going to vote for Obama to avoid looking like a racist, and then voting for McCain when in the privacy of the voting booth. I believe the opposite is going to be true. I believe there are many Christian African-Americans who have been saying they’re going to vote for Obama simply to avoid being attacked by family members and other African-Americans.

When it comes time to actually vote, many of them will vote their Christian faith.

Only in CA to you have the Teacher’s Union giving over a million dollars to defeat a Proposition that would keep them from teaching about homosexuality in the schools and lie in advertising that it’s not about the schools but about “EQUALITY” and not being racist who send Japanese to internment camps. You have parents purposefully keeping their kids from home “unexcused” so that the schools don’t get paid to cover for that million plus dollar donation.

Having said all that, those urban areas like Loretta Sanchez’s area that allow illegals to vote will probably make it hard for McCain to win. I kid, I kid… actually I don’t but I kid, I kid…

Tomorrow night, after voting for McCain and after I take my son out to dinner for his birthday, I’ll be coming home, getting out my Bible and a beer (I don’t have a gun yet), and I’ll be getting my drink on and trusting that God has this all in His control.

They are on the run…now let’s run to the booth and vote.

right2bright, I’ve been saying for a long time that whenever Obama’s team acts like it’s in the bag, it shows panic to me. It’s like they have to put up a front even when there is loads of evidence pointing to the opposite.

My best friend is up in Hershey, Pa., making phone calls like mad (while simultaneously caring for her baby and toddler). I promised her free dinner at her favorite restaurant, with all the dessert she can eat, if we take Pennsylvania!

To Heck with Bill O’Reilly!

The only people worth watching on Fox News are Greta, Sean, Neil, and Megyn.

I think Ca is going for McCain this election. BHO has paid no attention to Ca. Ca went for clinton. Prop 8 is out there. conservatives in Ca are energized, liberals think the election is won. Ca has not had an impact on the election since what 1914? the liberals in san fran and La have been put to sleep. turnout will be low and Rep will take the state. this is my Hail mary pass for McCain

The Fox News All-Stars have had a defeatist attitude for about a month now. There is no where to go……

Thank goodness for ManlyRash!

I live in california. So, which particular drug were you on when you typed that?

I live in L.A. and you would be shocked at the huge McCain/Palin
underground… huge

Lost a lot of respect for Brit Hume and the Fox Network in general.

Thank god he’s leaving Fox soon. Maybe they’ll do away with these Beltway Chicken Hawks too.

I would love to see a McCain win in the electoral college and an Obama win in the popular vote. I have enough ammo on hand to withstand the fallout.

Do phone calls really make difference? Don’t they tend to annoy people, like telemarketers?

The polls are all over the darned place. I`m trying to disregard them but alas I feel that slumber will NOT come readily tonight. I DO plan on being AT the polls before they open at 6:00 am (gotta beat the crowds). Deep in my gut I feel a decisive McCain/Palin victory tomorrow.
