Final Mason-Dixon battleground numbers: dead heat
posted at 7:45 am on November 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Jonathan Martin notes at Politico that the battleground states appear to have all reached a dead-heat conclusion — with lots of undecideds — in the last Mason-Dixon polling. M-D did a credible job in the 2004 election, and this could mean either candidate could sail away with this election. In fact, Obama hasn’t hit 50% in any of these polls (via Gateway Pundit):
Colorado: Obama 49, McCain 44, Undecided 4
Florida: Obama 47, McCain 45, Undecided 7
Nevada: Obama 47, McCain 43, Undecided 8
Pennsylvania: Obama 47, McCain 43, Undecided 9
Virginia: Obama 47, McCain 44, Undecided 9
Ohio: McCain 47, Obama 45, Undecided 6
Missouri: McCain 47, Obama 46, Undecided 5
North Carolina: McCain 49, Obama 46, Undecided 5As Brad Coker, who runs the Mason-Dixon poll, notes, the vast majority of the undecided voters in these states are whites.
I believe that other polling shows Florida and Nevada as close but relatively reliable McCain wins. If McCain can’t carry Florida, then he probably loses the election no matter what anyway, unless he figures a way to lose Florida but win every other state on this list. Colorado probably goes to Obama.
That leaves Pennsylvania and Virginia, and it looks like McCain could win them both. Both have high percentages of undecideds, and both are within the margin of error. If McCain wins both, he has 281 Electoral College votes even without Nevada. If Obama wins both, he has 276 EC votes even if he loses Minnesota. In a split, Pennsylvania would win McCain the election, or a combination of Virginia and Minnesota or perhaps another blue state looking to go red.
Coal could win or lose this election in both states. Team McCain needs to push that issue hard in the final hours in the Rust Belt region. Undecideds will almost certainly fall his way in the final hours of this election, as long as McCain can convince them to actually vote.

I’ve never believed that. Not after McCain chose Palin.

As Brad Coker, who runs the Mason-Dixon poll, notes, the vast majority of the undecided voters in these states are whites.
Goddamn I am tired of race being mentioned in every breath.
Obama is on track to get roughly the same vote totals, perhaps a touch more, than Kerry and Gore; did they lose because they were black too?
Mr. Bingley on November 3, 2008 at 7:50 AM
I have mixed emotions about all this.
On the one hand I’m glad that McCain is within striking distance of a great victory. On the other hand I’m very disturbed that the voters of this great nation would even consider placing Barack Obama in the Whitehouse; in a rational time he would have been finished back in the Iowa caucus.
Makes you wonder what has happened to the good sense of the American electorate.

If McCain wins…it’s peanut butter jelly time.
watchmen on November 3, 2008 at 7:52 AM
Totally agree, if only because the demographics of Florida are a microcosm of the rest of the nation. That being said in my little chunk I’m seeing A LOT more McCain signs than I did Bush signs in 2004 and not a lot of Obama signs. Took a walk yesterday and saw a homemade “I’m Tom the UPS Driver” sign in front of one McCain home!
But…McCain is also at Raymond James Stadium this morning, which while I doubt Hillsborough goes blue is probably designed to get him on TV in Florida’s biggest market, so maybe some of the surrounding counties are teetering.
McLovin on November 3, 2008 at 7:55 AM
The thing to watch out for today is what last minute “October Surprise” story the media is going to push to try and derail the McCain campaign just before voting starts?
I’m guessing it’s going to come from the New York Times.

An educational “system” in dire need of a complete teardown and overhaul starting from pre-K and going all the way up to the graduate level at university. Civics courses no longer mandatory…only a semester–or less–of American history being required in high school–and the history that is taught is so laden with postmodern deconstructionism that it’s no wonder students come out ill informed and cynical…and I can go on and on.
Regardless of the victor of this election, we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us–but, it’ll be easier and far less painful if we can get McCain across that line first.
Matt Helm on November 3, 2008 at 7:56 AM
Let’s put it this way…if mental stability were a prerequisite for voting, we’d have a government almost completely free of Democrats.

Yes, and if people bothered to understand how coal is actually mined in the United States today, the winner would be Obama. Current Coal mining practice is so environmentally evil that I would actually support Nuremberg type tribunals with the throwing out of ex post facto restrictions for the coal industry. Coal mining today, as opposed to when there were coal miners, just basically rips up the Earth leveling places like West Virginia and leaving toxic pits all over the place. I’d just like people to vacation West Virginia in the coal mining areas as I have and see if they can support what’s going on now. Now, if coal were mined in ways that were not environmentally insane, I would another opinion about this subject.

I’ve never witnessed a media so boldly “in the tank” for a candidate in my lifetime. The MSM has failed to do the job it was created to do, and they aren’t trying to hide that fact one bit. Based upon the bold bias in the media, coupled with the fact that most polling agencies are under Liberal control, I’m of the belief that Obama has an 8-10 point fabricated cushion in these polls. This election looks like it’s very similar to 2000 and 2004, showing once again that America remains a center right country by a very slim margin.
I believe a true Conservative Republican candidate would win a general election by a landslide, which would silence the belief that Americans are ready to embrace Socialism and the new Democrat Party.
I also believe that both parties are taking us in the same direction, but one party is taking us there much quicker than the other. Republicans must get back to Conservative ways of governing; get out of the way and let the people function without handcuffs and road blocks; shrink the size and scope of big government, while letting states govern freely with much less involvement from the feds. Get rid of the death tax, which is a blatant attack on personal wealth. Get rid of the capital gains tax which takes hundreds of millions of dollars and puts it in government hands rather than back into the economy.
McCain/Palin win this election tomorrow with similar numbers that Bush won with in 2004.

I have seen it first hand,,, too many people cannot think beyond the bumper sticker. I woman I work with,, this woman has basic conservative values, though doesn’t realize it. She said she can’t vote McCain because “Palin wears those $500. designer glasses.”
Another guy is voting Obama because he thinks Obama is cool. When you try to have a discussion,, it’s like their faces contort and it’s information overload for them. I am not talking about low paid, teenagers. I am talking middle class adults in middle class jobs who have families.
I think these are people that identify with the media,, magazines like People. They think Oprah is smart.

I believe this combined with Obama’s thuggish political methods, his cold-mindedness (infanticide anyone), his megalomania (symbols of power including his personal Seal, speech to Berlin, etc.), his charisma, and his seeking out of radical allies over a lifetime… put(s) America at risk of a dictatorship within the next few to ten years.

Supposedly, by the Obomber team’s own analysis, he has to have a 10 point lead to win this. And there’s now way he’s got it.

McCain’s gotta win every state that touches the Ohio River except Illinois. Good thing there’s lots of coal and gun clingers in the Ohio valley. I thought he would win easily in these states (even PA) until the banking collapse somehow managed to benefit Obama, but it’s still close enough to happen.

I have argued against McCain on this board many times in the past and voted for Barr via absentee ballot already (I am a resident of Alaska, so I didn’t cost McCain the election so take a drink of decaffeinated and relax before you start hurling invectives). I think McCain really, really sucks as a candidate and that the Republican party chose him is troubling. The point of this post is a question: As more and more WWII generation die off, more and more of the destructive generation replace the WWII generation as the “senior vote”, and more and more publicly educated believers in the benevolence and central role government plays in their lives become voters, what does that say about the future of this country? I mean this year, the Democrats have nominated an outright Marxist and no one seems to have a problem with it, hell, he is probably going to win this election. How does this country correct this course down the road to destruction?
King of the Britons on November 3, 2008 at 8:31 AM

By this time in the election, it’s very difficult for traditional democrat voters to believe Obama is a traditional democrat. The McCain camp and allies have done a pretty good job of exposing his radicalism. That makes me think many trad. blue collar Dem voters won’t just be going through the usual motions tomorrow when voting. People are being forced to confront something uncomfortable and disturbing in their Dem candidate.

Two Points:
1.McCain will win Virginia. Every poll showing a big lead for Obama has had a +6 or greater advantage for the democrats when just 2 years ago it was +3 Repubs. State has not shifted 9 points. The Southwest portion of the state are going to run up huge margins for McCain to offset NOVA. Also rumors that McCains GOTV was lacking is incorrect. We are seriously getting at least 3 calls everyday for the past week.
2. While the Bradley effect may contain some racists votes, it is more likely some who do not want to be called racist. I know of many Democrats who secretly say they will vote for McCain. But they won’t dare say so publicly. Just think about it. If they call Republicans racist for voting against Obama, what do you think they would call Democrats who would dare vote against “The One”?
jmell7 on November 3, 2008 at 9:22 AM
I still have a bet that Iowa is going to be REALLY close if not a win for McCain. Here in Missouri McCain is on track to win the state. Why? Because most of the old FDR democrats I know here are deep down racist and have told me when I worked during the primaries they could never vote for a black guy. Their quotes, not mine.
Two other points, Missouri has always voted with the winner but once for the last century, and two, we had a straw poll at the state fair that has always been right since it’s been taken over 100 years ago and McCain was 80/20 over Obama.

This is the real deal panic, they know they have to decide on the “undecideds” and those are white, he has to take 10=12% more of them to win.
The “big boys” in the Obama office are muttering to themselves. They saw the overnights during the weekend and they took a beating.
Watch what Obama does, it will be a sign of panic. It is too late to play the “keep them on the toes” game, they are sinking.
PA, and OH are now McCains, Florida is McCains, NC the great majority of the blacks have voted and Obama is barely hanging on with that.
With the Republican vote, Obama has lost NC also…he is running out of options…now Minnesota?
The son of a relative in the Obama campaign (on the internet side, but high up) is reporting all out panic this morning…there heads are spinning.

McCain will win FL, OH, NC, MO, and VA. CO and NV are less certain but still very winnable. Keep an eye on Pennsylvania early. If McCain takes that it will make it very difficult for Obama to get to 270. I also think that Iowa and New Hampshire are in play.
McCain is actually in pretty good position for a EC victory despite everything.

I’m watching Our Sarah in OH right now. She is SMOKIN’. And I’m not talking necessarily about her appearance.
Oh rats. They cut to FL and John and Joe Lieberman.

I’d bet that those ‘undecided’ who’ll turn up to vote have already made up their minds and will vote McCain. They’re just not telling, either because they think it’s no one else’s business or it’s not perceived as popular.

Hello new friends at HotAir! My name is Mark Garnett, 48 y/o, married 24 years with one Son in HS. Conservative Christian, Production Manager, lived in TX for 47 years, now in a RED county in NJ., can’t wait to discuss with other like minded new friends, and a few trolls…
I have really taken heart since finding your site about 5 months ago, I was never really into the blogs, but started looking at Drudge this year and found you great folks…
Thank you for this chance to join this community.
Here is a new guys thoughts going into tomorrow:
McCain will win, REAL Americans will flood the votes in OH, PA, FL, VA, NC… We will lose CO.
I fell Obama will win Popular Vote but lose to Mc in EV count…
My reasons, (many mentioned here before, I am sure):
1) Polls are DEAD wrong, heavily weighed to DEM and a HUGE, HUGE number of folks who have “refused” to answer pollsters this year… Why? If your an Obama voter you are yelling from the tree tops, “I’m FOR Obama”! But those blue collars, rural, surburban voters (who do NOT want to be thought of a redneck racists) are NOT responding…
2) Americans are waking up to the Messiah, his stange bed fellows, his desires for CHANGE to an America no-one would recognize. Kill Coal Plants, Drive up gas prices, Kill Drilling again, Fairness doctrine… and so many more…
My Call is: McCain 281 Obama 257
McCain takes FL, VA, PA, OH, NC, IN, MO…
We lose : CO, NM, NV, IA, MN, NH…
From my mouth to God’s ears…

If this thing were in the bag for BO there wouldnt be so much shenanigans being pulled to boost him. I got nothing but freakin robo-calls yesterday at home and was ready to rip my phone wires out. There’s no dem even in my friggin house.
Maryland is trying to implement slot machines to cut costs after our new Dem Governor just raised sales tax a whole percent. Voting for slots was to stop a tax increase here, and we already got nailed with it, so guess what…NO SLOT VOTE PLEASE! More money to give them to waste!

They were discussing these polls today on Joe S. and they pointed out that the data in the polls were gathered from last Wednesday and so they don’t accurately reflect the situation today. Anyone know if this is true?

Its coming down to the wire…just want this to go to MAC by more than one state so there is no question of who won.

At the rally in Richmond Saturday, we were talking to some folks from that area. I’m convinced that area is deeply red… and the locals were all worried about Hampton Roads (moreso than NorVa). I told them to be indeed worried, as Obama’s got door-to-door canvassers going around non-stop in my neck of the woods. I don’t know if the military vote is going to out-do the Obama vote down here – if anything, they’ll cancel each other out. I think Virginia will go to McCain, but it’ll be close – maybe close enough that Obama will challenge it. And that’s me being optimistic.
Off-topic, man, I love me some Eric Cantor. I don’t live in his district, but after hearing him talk, I almost wish I did. He’s going places.
