Final Fox News poll: Obama 50, McCain 43

Their last one went 47/44 but that was based on an oddball sample of 41 percent Democrats and 39 percent Republicans. This one’s back to 42 percent Dem and 36 percent GOP. Hence the spread.
The whole election in one table:

Iraq now ranks lower than taxes. Speaking of which, here’s what Maverick’s gotten from weeks’ worth of hammering The One with talking points about Joe the Plumber and redistribution. The columns represent Obama and McCain, respectively. The question: Which candidate do you trust more to handle the issue?

I don’t know how to explain the trend since September except to guess that the “socialism” gambit backfired by focusing attention on Obama’s tax plan and his ever-shifting promise of cuts for the middle class. Another question, possibly germane to this one, asked if Obama’s views are too liberal or about right. Last week’s breakdown: 43/50. This week’s: 40/53. Whether that’s an artifact of the sample or proof that my read on the taxes question is right, I don’t know.
Now for a little good news:

No enthusiasm gap so far, although the greater absolute number of Democrats means Obama’s banked more votes. Hopefully McCain makes it up among undecideds, most of whom probably aren’t joining the cult now if they haven’t joined already.
Finally, this:

In hindsight, I wonder why Team Maverick didn’t follow the Obama playbook and roll Palin out as a post-partisan candidate instead of as the hero of the base. Her social con credentials and Jacksonian appeal are impeccable; she could have gone out there, stumped to McCain’s left, and the grassroots wouldn’t have loved her an iota less. The One relies on that same phenomenon among the left to give him cover when he goes around praising the Second Amendment, calling for more troops in Afghanistan, and opposing gay marriage: Centrists eat it up and the left looks the other way because, when push comes to shove, they don’t really believe he’s sincere. Conceivably, the McCain camp could have packaged Palin similarly, relying on the fact that she’s worked with Democrats in Alaska to make bipartisanship her core talking point instead of the daily attacks on Obama. It would have disarmed the media (to some extent) and helped with independents, women included/especially. What might have been.

No shiat, whoever(and it may have been Palin herself) decided to have her play attack dog and play to the base while McCain went center should never be allowed near a campaign ever again… just one of the examples of complete utter imbalance, tonedeafness, lack of awareness, wutever…

Asking people not to be classless when we’re talking about a woman having died isn’t a misplaced priority.
Acting the same way classless slime does makes you no different.

I don’t believe those polls. If people aren’t surveyed to make us feel demoralised, then it’s to make them feel better.
I won’t even be surprised if the networks erroneously announce an O victory before the real winner is shown to be McCain.

I really don’t think many people will factor it into their decision. Frankly, having gone through the death of my own mom after a lengthy illness several years ago, I was not that impressed by how Barack handled his grandma’s terminal illness. Obviously how someone deals with the death of a close relative is very personal, but I didn’t get a big hit of sincerity off of what Obama has said and done with respect to his family over the course of this campaign.
Perhaps he’ll get a few sympathy votes, but he may also take a hit from people who feel he could have handled things differently… so I think it’s a wash.
Y-not on November 3, 2008 at 5:17 PM
Let me see if I can get this straight. Fox Opinion Dynamics reports 4 days ago that McCain had gained 6 points over the previous week and now with one day left to go in the election he has lost 4 points in 4 days. Then we have Rasmussen releasing state polls today showing that McCain has made up 5 points in Florida, 4 points in Ohio, and 3 points in North Carolina and 1 point in Missouri; McCain is now leading by 1 point in Florida and NC, tied in Missouri and Ohio and has not lost any ground in Virginia and Colorado where he is 4 points down in both states. I would call this cognitive dissonance in the extreme.
technopeasant on November 3, 2008 at 5:17 PM
There’s a difference between not voting for someone because of the death and saying that she died “right on cue”.

SAME poll, battleground states
State – Obama – McCain
CO – 51 – 47

I agree this is genius. But remember, the people who are running McCain’s campaign these days are trained in the Karl Rove, get the base out models. When we libs complained about the negativity of those campaigns, righties correctly pointed out that the rules were the rules and no matter how you slice it, Bush got to 270 in both elections, fair and square. Where people got messed up is that they confused Bush’s propaganda, specifically his contention that a razor thin victory was a “mandate” with the truth of the American electorate as a whole. Worse, they confused their loosely built coalition with a strongly unified party, when that was not the case.
The GOP is going to have to find a way to build a new coalition. Evangelicals alone won’t do it.

Aw, c’mon, Dubya. I expected better team spirit from you than that. Vot for McCain. Call friends and family and urge them to vote for McCain. Help to get out the vote. In that way Obama will be defeated.
You do want to see Obama defeated, don’t you, Dubya?

I guess AP isn’t exactly a HopenChange sorta guy. Why he didn’t choose to show these poll results, thus giving us something to enjoy, rather than the poll where he’s losing, which made us bicker…I don’t know. I guess he just has a sick sense of humor.
jimmy the notable on November 3, 2008 at 5:21 PM
Polls, shmolls, along with the MSM bias, few polls may reflect anything remotely resembling an accurate picture of the voting public. This close to the actual election it makes more sense to relax and go do your voting thing if ACORN hasn’t done it for you already, several times, for the wrong candidate.

Obama’s grandmother is not Princess Di. How many people even know her name or what she looks like? I am 57 years old, in the last 15 years I have buried two grandparents and my mother. My Dad died when he was only 54 years old.
Everyone has to deal with death in their families, especially as family members age. I doubt very much if someone will go vote for Obama just because his grandmother died.

I would call it twilight zone. My head is spinning around. I don’t know what to think or what to believe. My heart or my mind? My mind tends to say that we are for a McCain lost but my heart tells me that its still hope. You cannot fight hope but for my mind to be a little relaxed I’d like to see more encouraging news. Honestly.
Depends how many sympathy votes he’ll get and where. If he gets them in California or New York is not a big deal. But if he gets those votes in Fl, OH or PA that can be bad news for McCain.

I’d have to suggest that the base aka grassroots hate McCain and are only voting for him 1)b/c he picked Palin 2) because they hate Othello. To hide Palin under a facade: that’s gamesmanship. It’s not reality. I am so sick of Disneyland, make-believe politics. I happen to think Joe the Plumber would make a better Co in Chief, as he IS the common man. If people don’t like the common man, it’s because they never get him. All the rest of this garbage stuffed down the throat, you get a taste for garbage. But, that can’t diminish true delectables, when they are to be had. Mhhh, fresh meat.!!! That’s the red meat we want, someone that’s still alive!

I’m sorry for Mrs Dunham and hope she is at peace now.
Still, her passing does not excuse the slimy Marxist man-child she raised. He has played her like a violin for his own crass political purposes. He needs four years off to mourn her loss.
I’m sorry he and the rest of her family lost her. But if he is to avoid the kinds of negative, snarky reactions he so richly deserves for every reprehensible thing he has done, he’d better damn well mourn her in private.

How does a congress with historically low approval ratings actually increase the numbers of the party in charge? Or are Americans too ignorant to know who is actually in charge of congress?
aigle on November 3, 2008 at 5:28 PM
Palin was only acceptable to the base because of her anti-abortion stance. That’s precisely what made her unacceptable to the Left, and it appears, the middle.
If McCain wanted a female Veep who’d appeal to the center and marginally the Left, he should have chosen Rice.
McCain choice was either piss off the base or make his bed with them. He chose the later.
I predict in ‘12, the base gets a bigger middle finger from the RNC than Obama’s.

BTW, I have said this before but it bares repeating. A few short years ago the real Bush had an approval rating of about 70% and the Republicans had both houses of Congress. Things change. And even if Obama wins, I do not doubt that things will change again. Pelosi, Reid and Obama could end up being more dangerous to the future of the Democrat party than Bush ever was.
Especially when Obama unveils his new payroll taxes and energy taxes etc…

right2bright on November 3, 2008 at 5:32 PM
I wouldn’t bet against the real George Bush (as opposed to the namesakes around the ‘net) wanting, at least sometimes, a win for Osama Obama.
His campaign tactics in ‘00, when he faced McCain in the primaries, rivaled Obama’s for sheer nastiness.
And, perhaps more important, being followed by The Messiah would certainly make one of the most lackluster and inept presidents of our time look much better.
I’ll give him credit — but not much as some want — for the fact that we haven’t been attacked again since 9/11/01, but on immigration, bloating government and screwing up the economy, he has been a disaster. He is behind the persecution of Ramos and Compean, too, and to me that is unforgivable.
So if Jorge Boosh is a closet Obama fan, wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
MrScribbler on November 3, 2008 at 5:32 PM
I don’t think this is a good topic for the day before the election. Although it does further illustrate Obama’s willingness to accept illegal contributions as well as his poor character, it minimizes the more serious examples of each (ACORN, Wright, Ayers). If I were an undecided voter just now “tuning in” I would assume that this aunt thing was the most damning thing the Republicans have on Obama and vote accordingly.

I don’t think you can draw that kind of conclusion from a single poll. I would like to review the exit polling and also polling conducted within a week after the election to get a sense of what issues really drove Obama’s victory.
My guess is that McCain didn’t have the ability to develop the socialism narrative. The MSM blunted it by attacking JTP and spinning the attacks as “desperate” on McCain’s part. And we know McCain can’t run ads anymore… (I live in Ohio and it’s been well over a WEEK since I have seen a McCain TV ad. I see probably 5 Obama ads a night.)

You must be joking. Rice is too much connected to Bush’s administration. McCain had to fight to distance himself from Bush as much as he could and in meantime not to loose the base. He had only one woman that he could choose:Sarah Palin. And the problem with Palin was not the abortion issue but the imagine create about her with the generous help of some so called conservative pundits (aka Peggy Noonan and so on) that she is not prepared to be POTUS. LBJ led us to the biggest military defeat in US history/
Jimmy Carter led us to the worse economy and political standing in the world in decades.
Bill Clinton was so bad that the American public threw his party out of power in Congress within 2 years after a 75 year dominance.

But he is not running for president – McCain is. Get out there and get out the vote for McCain.

I find it sick that people in this country are even considering putting Obama in the White House — what the hell is wrong with America?!??!

Yeah, Brat, we are all generally in agreement here. I hate people that feel bad about people they never knew. Like crying about a celebrity dying….phewy.

Listen, I know what the polls say. I have been hearing about the impending doom for about 2 years now. Let me tell you something. In November of 2002, I was diagnosed with a Grade 3 Primary Brain Tumor.
The best diagnosis was a 20% chance of survival. Here I set typing away 6 years later. Every doctor told me to get my affairs in order. Well you know what I did? I got determined. I got mad and I fought like hell.
I am not superhuman, especially tough, or lucky. Here I am though. Now McCain is written off. He has no chance. All the polls say Obama in a landslide. I will tell you all what I told my doctors. 20% huh? Well I am a 20% kind of guy. So is McCain. He is going to win tomorrow. I can’t quote you statistics and I don’t have a crystal ball but he is going to win.

Red State had a story this morning that Rossi was looking good in WA state and that Gregoire had to get most of King County or else. I’m in King County and I won’t be voting for her. She won last time with aid of ACORN and 3 recounts by 126 votes…after The Stranger posted addresses of McCain supporters maybe it’ll send even more cocooned Repubs to the voting booth.
*fingers crossed*
