Coal Association: Hey, Obama looks a little hostile!
posted at 2:40 pm on November 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
After quotes from both Barack Obama and Joe Biden on coal have arisen over the last couple of weeks, the Ohio Coal Association has become just a wee bit concerned about the direction an Obama administration would take regarding energy. The president of the OCA released a statement today calling the Democratic ticket “extraordinarily misguided”:
Mike Carey, president of the Ohio Coal Association (OCA), today issued the following statement in response to just-released remarks from Senator Barack Obama about the nation’s coal industry.
“Regardless of the timing or method of the release of these remarks, the message from the Democratic candidate for President could not be clearer: the Obama-Biden ticket spells disaster for America’s coal industry and the tens of thousands of Americans who work in it.
“These undisputed, audio-taped remarks, which include comments from Senator Obama like ‘I haven’t been some coal booster’ and ‘if they want to build [coal plants], they can, but it will bankrupt them’ are extraordinarily misguided.
“It’s evident that this campaign has been pandering in states like Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana and Pennsylvania to attempt to generate votes from coal supporters, while keeping his true agenda hidden from the state’s voters.
“Senator Obama has revealed himself to be nothing more than a short- sighted, inexperienced politician willing to say anything to get a vote. But today, the nation’s coal industry and those who support it have a better understanding of his true mission, to ‘bankrupt’ our industry, put tens of thousands out of work and cause unprecedented increases in electricity prices.
“In addition to providing an affordable, reliable source of low-cost electricity, domestic coal holds the key to our nation’s long-term energy security – a goal that cannot be overlooked during this time of international instability and economic uncertainty.
“Few policy areas are more important to our economic future than energy issues. As voters head to the polls tomorrow, it is essential they remember that access to reliable, affordable, domestic energy supplies is essential to economic growth and stability.”
How big will the coal remarks be? Let’s not forget Biden’s comments from six weeks ago:
“We’re not supporting clean coal.”
“No coal plants here in America. Build them if they’re going to build them over there. Make them clean.”
At the time, the Obama campaign swore that Biden had been taken out of context. Now it looks like Biden had the context exactly correct. An Obama administration would be very hostile to coal, and its policies would kill jobs in the coal-producing regions of the US, including the critical states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and others. If the Republicans can get this message out over the next 12 hours, they may be able to make a difference in Coal Country.

So in other words, all that time last summer when Obama and Biden were giving fiery speeches about high energy costs and greedy oil companies, they in fact were actually salivating over people forking over more of there hard earned money.
You mean they lied through their teeth. No way! That is impossible! Obama and Biden mean hope and change!
Excuse me while I now vomit.

Has anyone informed the 95% of Americans getting Obama’s “tax cut” that their lousy $1,000 or $500 refundable tax credit is going to be spent on skyrocketing electricy bills and gas prices, both of which will reverberate throughout the economy.
I felt all along that energy would be one of the critical things leading us out of the economic doldrums. Obama and Biden and Dems in Congress seem to take a perverse pleasure in tanking our economy. Their energy policy is two sticks for every voter.

It’s very simple.
Throw out the talking points about being Mavericks and scars to prove it BS and hammer Obama/Biden using their own words and missteps against him. They will never make voters love McCain at this late hour, so they need to focus on turning voters away from Obama.
This effects all households. They need to let people understand what coal provides us.

I’m working on comparing energy sources on my blog. Here’s my secion on solar.
There has been a lot of discussion in the last few years about “alternative” energy, which, in most cases means wind and solar as alternatives to coal, natural gas, and nuclear. The problems with wind and solar are well known to anyone with thirty minutes to spare to do a modicum of research. Unfortunately, far too many Americans are too intellectually lazy to become informed and have outsourced their thinking to radical, agenda driven environmentalists and their enablers in media, academia, and politics. They have substituted saving the earth platitudes for real world analysis of even the basics of our available energy sources.
Below is a simple analysis of both energy that I hope even the most stubborn and ignorant Liberal can understand.
Solar:
According to the New American the maximum, which is far more than what is actually recoverable, amount of solar power available per acre in Albuquerque, NM, a region of the country blessed with a lot of sunshine, is 970 kW/acre.
The largest nuclear power plant in the US is the Palo Verde plant near Phoenix, AZ. Although the entire Palo Verde facility occupies 4,000 acres, the reactor buildings, cooling towers, cooling ponds, and support facilities only cover approximately 500 acres. Palo Verde produces 3.2 GW from its three reactors that run 24/7 and only shut down for maintenance and periodic refueling.
Now, to get that same 3.2 GW from a solar array operating at 100% (a physical impossibility) the solar plant would require a little less than the same 4000 acres, ~3,300. This sounds like a great deal but in reality the physical maximum efficiency of modern solar cells only allows a conversion rate of about 10%. “The problem of maximizing power from sunlight has been known for at least 30 years, and is primarily one of physical limitations, not engineering technology.”
So this 3,300 acres in reality would require 33,000 acres to produce the same 3.2 GW as a nuclear power plant. That also assumes the entire 33,000 acres is covered by solar arrays, which, again is impossible. There needs to be spacing for panel movement, personnel, and probably vehicle traffic. So lets conservatively say to generate 3.2 GW during the peak sunshine hours would require 35,000 acres. That’s a lot of acreage for a plant that would only be able to produce electricity for 8-10 hours on a good sunny summer day. What then to do at night when the sun isn’t shining? What are the options for areas of the country that don’t have the available number of sunny days Albuquerque has? What are the environmental impacts to wildlife and plant species of tens of thousands of acres being hidden from the sun under vast arrays of solar panels? Due to the area required, the inefficiency, and limited availability of solar energy, solar energy can never be more than a supplement to more traditional and reliable sources of energy.

Need a montage of all his energy remarks in a single commercial.
DerKrieger on November 3, 2008 at 3:02 PM
Now…Let me see if I got this right. Obama wants to bankrupt the American coal industry using taxation as his weapon of choice. Fifty percent of America’s electrical production capacity lost. No nuclear power plants…(gotta keep those environmentalist wackos happy). No off shore drilling where the oil is…you can only drill where there is none. No ANWAR drilling. Energy prices skyrocket. Thousands, if not hundreds of thousands employed by these industries, out of work. Former taxpaying citizens now become part of the growing list of those on the government dime. YEP…Sounds like a plan to me.

tarpon on November 3, 2008 at 3:10 PM
Americans are simply ignorant. Most actually believe that wind and solar can replace more conventional sources of energy because they have never bothered to do the research. And our MSM has once again failed to do its job in reporting the shortcomings of renewables. If Obama wins the entire country will be forced to learn the hard facts about alternative energy sources, they will never be more than a minor supplement.
