Carl Cameron: Optimism growing inside McCain camp

posted at 9:18 pm on November 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

It won’t be easy but it is do-able. What’s got Maverick, Salter, and other senior aides suddenly so bubbly? Their internal polls, in all likelihood. Lead pollster Bill McInturff pronounced the race too close to call in a memo sent out late last week that claimed things were trending their way in the battlegrounds. They must have gotten more good news over the weekend. Someone had better tell Joe the Plumber because he’s sounding even more pessimistic than I am.

Stats wizard Nate Silver puts their odds at 1.9%. Click the image to watch.

First timer here… thanks for letting us register!

Okay… this is why the McCain camp is “bubbly”, and why I’m telling everyone I can to stay positive and get our butts to the polls tomorrow.

We have all discussed why these polls could be wrong, not the least of which is the “Silent 50″, those 50 percent of called prospects that refuse to take a poll when called. Normally this is not a big issue, the pollsters make the assumption that the 50% that agree to be polled will vote the same as the ones who refuse, and they are usually correct – except in very emotionally charged races, much like our famous exit polling 4 years ago. This election I believe the silent 50%, or should I say a portion of them, are refusing to be polled simply because they are McCain supporters. Why I beleive this should be obvious so I will not expand. The real question is just how large that percentage is, no one knows, you can’t. But if 1 in 40 called prospects are refusing to be polled on this reason, it will swing the results a full 5 percentage points, now keep that in mind and let’s look at the states.

By taking only one pollsters numbers (so the methodology remains somewhat consistent) we can take a snapshot of the “toss up states” at RCP (using Rasmussen numbers).
Shown as toss ups are VA,NC,GA,OH,IN,FL,MO,ND,AZ, and MT. With the exception of VA, all of these states are at dead tied or positive for McCain in the latest Rasmussen polls, VA is 4 points in favor of Obama. Now here is where things get interesting. If we see that aforementioned 5 point swing then Va falls into the McCain column (and this coal bit from Obama will help that as well). Things are suddenly real tight, EV speaking that is.If the 5 point swing stays true then we also take Colorado which also shows 4 points for Obama – that leaves it at 269 to 269, but if we pull out Nevada (also 4 points in the latest polls) then McCain wins 274 to 265.

It’s not far fetched at all. The early returns on the east coast should tell us real quick just how far off the polls are swinging.

I’m “bubbly” myself!

ManlyRash, I also have to say that I have been reading your comments for a while now and have not had the chance to comment until now, but they have kept me hopeful in times when after reading an article or two, hope seemed far from reach.

O/T – just received this email from the McCain campaign:

My Friend,

From the time I entered the Naval Academy at age seventeen I have been privileged and honored to serve my country.

Throughout my years of service, I’ve been faced with challenges where I could have taken the easy way out and given up. But I’m an American and I never give up. Instead, I choose to show courage and stand up and fight for the country I love. Today, I am asking you to stand with me and to fight for our country’s future.

Our country faces enormous challenges and our next president must be ready to lead on day one. My lifetime of experience has prepared me to lead our great nation. I’m prepared to bring solutions to our economic challenges, bring our troops home in victory and improve our nation’s healthcare system.

Time and time again, my country has saved my life and I owe her more than she has ever owed me. I have chosen to show my gratitude through a life of service to our country and tomorrow, you will have a choice before you.

I humbly ask you to make the choice that will allow me to serve my country a little while longer by casting your vote to elect me as your next President of the United States.

Finally, I ask that you never forget that much has been sacrificed to protect our right to vote. We must never forget those Americans who, with their courage, with their sacrifice, and with their lives, have protected our freedom. It is my great hope that you will exercise your right to vote as an American tomorrow.

I thank you for your kind support, your dedication to our cause, and most importantly I thank you for your vote.

With sincere appreciation,

John McCain

Let’s make it happen for J-Mac and Arctic Fox, people.

Tomorrow let’s bring this shit HOME.

ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 10:57 PM

Now, as far as optimism in the McCain camp . . . can I get a “HELL YEAH?”

Watch how well McCain does in New Hampshire, but don’t get discouraged if he loses.

1. Obama has not done well there before.

2. It’s a Hillary state, so NH might be a PUMA bellwether. The HillBuzz boys seem to think Democrats there have an Obama enthusiasm deficit.

3. McCain has done well there before.

4. This report claims that Sununu is gaining ground.

Terrie on November 3, 2008 at 11:02 PM

One bad thing for me is I don’t listen to the lamestream media. OTOH, that might be a good thing. Anyway, I’m not sure of exactly how they are spinning things.

I don’t think the coal thing got a lot of mention here in Philly, Pa. However things might be a bit different out in coal country.

My mom is 80 with nasty arthritis and a boatload of other problems. Kicking myself that I didn’t think to get her an absentee ballot. Anyway, I spoke with her tonight and she plans to get to the polls early and stand in line as long as necessary…. to vote for McCain.

The key to this race is the silent block of McCain supporters. Those people who haven’t said much but will get out and vote on Tuesday. With the polls tightening up, they will have the incentive to get out.

The lamestream media has been criminally negligent in their coverage of this election. I’ll be doing the happy dance for hours when they end up with major egg on their ugly pusses.

Guess today a young man that just got back from Iraq. Opposes the war. So he put a ski mask on, his fatigues and had a gun, American Flag and a Nobama/Lieden sign. He went to the over pass and was hanging. The cops told the news station to shut the camera’s off. Guess it knocked the View off for about 10 minutes.(YAY) hate that show. Except Elizabeth. Any way he had a pack. The swat team negotiator let him hang the flag. Then they finally got cuffs on him. They had the bomb robot blow the bag up. Don’t know if anything was in there. Traffic in Santa Barbara was backed up like mad. So, tonight he tells the Sargent of the Sheriffs dept. that he hopes that Nobama will pay his fines and bail him out. Then invite him to the White House. Feel bad for him, but why did he join the armed services? Bless his heart though. Hope he gets help.

On the eve of the big night, Hot Air commenters “don’t f*ck around.” There’s no patience tonight for trolls.

Offhand, not to belittle the communication, but I’m reminded of Eisenhower’s message to the Allied forces on the eve of D-Day. It’s read in a poignant scene at the end of the second episode of Band of Brothers, and it’s also run again in print at the conclusion of the episode. It’s very inspiring.

I’ve thought a lot of our Greatest Generation throughout this campaign. As many as 1,000 are dying a day now. I feel very strongly that we need to send them out on a high note. God forgive me for saying this, but Obama simply doesn’t satisfy MLK’s aspiration for us all: judging others by the content of their character, not by the color of their skin. We wouldn’t be talking about Obama if he weren’t black. And I’ve thought that the measure of Obama’s character began and ended with his inability to walk away from Wright and his despicable church. And now a member of Congress from New York has confirmed my conclusion.

OMG! You guys are getting me a hooker? Sweeeeeeeet. *does Manly Rash version of Snoopy dance*

ManlyRash on November 3, 2008 at 11:06 PM

For saving the republic, we at HA should open a fund to pay for said “hooker”.

p.s. no drinking here – not all Californians are typical.

Entelechy on November 3, 2008 at 11:12 PM

have a Cosmopolitan or Mimosa or whatever the hell it is you CA types drink at night.

Manly, some of us drink beer, and there is always Jack. We may be in the land of fruits and nuts, but we smuggle in the good stuff now and then.

I read somewhere that O’Reilly endorsed Obama tonight…did he?

I’m watching the rebroadcast now. He didn’t endorse Obama but he accused McCain of running a bad campaign because he and Palin never came on The Factor.

CanadianGuy on November 3, 2008 at 11:13 PM

I understand the need for optimism, but Sabato, Rove and the betting sites make this look like it’s not even going to be close.

Is this sh!t true?

Did O’JugHead endorse the O-bomb-a?

FiveWays on November 3, 2008 at 11:13 PM

He is just sore that Palin and McCain did not come on his show and Obama did. Bill is concerned about Bill.

carbon_footprint on November 3, 2008 at 11:11 PM

Yeah, I read that too – but did he actually endorse Obama, or say he was voting for him, or what? If you get a chance, please. I don’t even know why I’m interested…I guess it’s the same reason I get interested when I’m driving past smashed up cars and ambulances.

Can someone please explain to me why bad weather on the east coast is good for republicans?

Seriously, – I’m an Australian. Don’t understand that kind of stuff.

Ozwitch on November 3, 2008 at 11:03 PM

You asked seriously, my friend. This is my best serious answer. A little old Republican lady 85 years old will drive through a nor’easter to get to the polls. Many youngsters, minorities, and folks who can’t be bothered will skip voting in bad weather.

It snowed in my area during the primaries, yet the polls were full of old people at 7am who managed to drive their Buicks in slick conditions to cast their votes. God bless ‘em.

HA is going to kick me off if I do this too often, but. . .

URGENT! SARAH PALIN PBS VOTE!

PBS has an online poll posted asking if Sarah Palin is qualified.
Apparently the left wing knew about this in advance and are flooding the
voting with NO votes.

The poll will be reported on PBS and picked up by mainstream media.
It can influence undecided voters in swing states.
Please do two things — takes 20 seconds.

1) Click on link and vote!

Here’s the link: http://www.pbs.org/now/polls/poll-435.html

2) Then send this to every McCain-Palin supporter you know, and urge
them to vote and pass it on.

The last thing we need is PBS saying their viewers don’t think Sarah
Palin is qualified.

See, I’ll say it. It’s kind of like working, Ozwitch. Most lefties go out and protest, whatever they can, whenever they want. They are too lazy to do it in the rain though. And they won’t put that much work into an actual JOB.
Republicans usually protest on weekends, if it involves military, life issues, and the good ol’ USA, but they have jobs and they go to those jobs. OKay, this was way too long

There’s an old saying…WHY WORK? VOTE Democratic.

Republicans get’er done. Okay?

HornetSting on November 3, 2008 at 11:16 PM

I am also newly registered and agree with redhead. I have a feeling that many McCain voters just refused to be polled, and I also believe the “Kennedy effect” is that correct? is in play.

Unfortunately, the polls suggest, again, a highly polarized country. In some ways this may be good-fewer infringements on our rights due to gridlock-or bad; for example civil unrest and class warfare.

What positive event or situation can we strive for that will unify our country in strength against those that would take from us all that we hold dear?

riverrat10k on November 3, 2008 at 11:16 PM

NH seems to pride itself in being quirky, as opposed to trendy, and for that reason, I think they thumb their noses at Obama and go for Obama. McCain and NH seem to have a special relationship.

BuckeyeSam on November 3, 2008 at 11:11 PM

As someone who just got back from NH (and lived there for a year) it is indeed different. There were quite a bit of Obama stickers, but not nearly as many as I thought there would be. I lived with a couple of Obamatrons up there, but I agree that there is a lack of enthusiasm for Obama. I think Nashua will be about split and I think Manchester and the north country will go to McCain.

Where did you get the phone numbers? Were they randomly chosen or provided from a database?

sharrukin on November 3, 2008 at 11:11 PM

On Johnm McCain’s official website, to the right there’s an option to “Make Calls for McCain” (or something to that effect) and then you click it, sign up, choose the state you wish to call and they give you a script (I changed it around a bit, it’s kind of lame) and a bunch of numbers to choose from. Then you fill out the results.

Do it tomorrow! 10am – 9pm! Our 11th hour push!
