Carl Cameron: Optimism growing inside McCain camp

posted at 9:18 pm on November 3, 2008 by Allahpundit

It won’t be easy but it is do-able. What’s got Maverick, Salter, and other senior aides suddenly so bubbly? Their internal polls, in all likelihood. Lead pollster Bill McInturff pronounced the race too close to call in a memo sent out late last week that claimed things were trending their way in the battlegrounds. They must have gotten more good news over the weekend. Someone had better tell Joe the Plumber because he’s sounding even more pessimistic than I am.

Stats wizard Nate Silver puts their odds at 1.9%. Click the image to watch.

The PUMAS have been awfully quiet these past couple of weeks. They want Hillary to have one more shot at the gold. If Obama is in, no dice. They will vote and they will help us win.

HornetSting on November 3, 2008 at 9:43 PM

Let me rephrase that a bit. Hillary supporters know that 8 years if Obama wins two terms, or perhaps even 12 years (more likely) if Obama wins, then loses to a republican in a Reaganesque fashion, means she has no hope of ever becoming president. Her (and their) only option is for Obama to lose tomorrow, and they will vote accordingly.

ManlyRash may be the first one snatching defeat for Obama out of the jaws of victory… but I’m gonna be the one to fish slap Obama with it.

Fozzy Bear on November 3, 2008 at 10:03 PM

A guy from our church – lifelong democrat who has no idea what his party has been up to lately – said he’s undecided. What got him to think twice was the moving threshold for taxation. He has this uneasy feeling that Obama will say whatever he thinks he can get away with and once he’s elected he can come out with what he really wanted all along. It doesn’t sit well with Mike.

And the paper for my daughter’s high school came out. A girl she knows is a McCain person was interviewed but wouldn’t say who she favored. But a couple seniors who she thought were Obama people said they didn’t trust Obama because of his inexperience. They said in the tough times we have we need somebody strong who won’t make stupid beginner’s errors.

My son in middle school couldn’t believe that over half the kids in his class voted McCain in a mock election. We’re in a rare democrat stronghold in Nebraska and all he and one other kid were the only ones who ever said anything positive about McCain/Palin.

I think people are beginning to see Obama’s “promise” of change as more of a THREAT of change – to change the basic foundations of this great nation. And that doesn’t sit well with them. On 9-11 we recognized the danger and we pulled together. There are people who may be stupid and ignorant, but they’re beginning to smell danger, and their heart will side with America the Beautiful – like they did on 9-11 and like the PUMAs have been doing since they realized what Obama was about.

We can do this. We MUST do this. It actually feels good to have a new respect for the PUMAs and realize that they love this nation too – and the now-threatened foundations which define this nation.

They don’t seem to have depressed anyone, so turnout should be heavy. The new trolls are prob. college kids recruited at the last minute. They’re painfully un-clever. I think that actually hurts Obama’s chances. It’s probably a very big mistake to show their nervousness like this.

phronesis on November 3, 2008 at 10:07 PM

I am a fool for making a prediction, but… I think Mccain-Palin will win the election as the polls have consistently overstated Democratic turnout in past elections and in particular the turnout of the youth vote. Many PUMA’s, Hispanic’s and working class whites are not too thrilled with Obama, and will stay home or vote Mccain despite what they tell the pollsters and friends.

I have also heard at several different sites Republicans stating they have lied to pollsters.

There is IMHO reason for optimism.

I think there is a trend toward McCain and if we could put the election off a week or two that would be great. Unfortunately, lots of people have already voted and the clock stops in less than twelve hours.

highhopes on November 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM

I believe that trend has been going on for a few weeks, and it’s possible that McCain’s camp sees internals that give them a good chance tomorrow. The early voters don’t bother me; the Obama early voters would have voted for him regardless of what information has bubbled up in the past week. I won’t even believe the exit polls tomorrow evening given their inaccuracy in 2004. I expect McCain/Palin to win both the popular vote and the EC tomorrow.

Heh, his face just looks like a camel to me… esp. if you receive the standard def broadcast that is stretched to fit the widescreen.

Obama: “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.”A civilian force as strong as the military? Your kidding, right? Um it’s Obama, so he probably isn’t kidding. Who would this force report to? The Messiah himself? What would be their mission? This is truly frightening. The Germans used to have a police force like that:The gestapo (help·info) (contraction of geheime Staatspolizei: “Secret State Police”) was the official secret police of Nazi Germany. Under the overall administration of the Schutzstaffel (SS), it was administered by the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA)Reich’s security service”) and was considered a dual organizationSicherheitsdienst (SD) (”security service”) and also a suboffice of the Sicherheitspolizei (SIPO) (”security police”).And look, before I hear any crap about the comparison don’t blame the messenger. OBAMA said this, not me or Karl Rove or John McCain. Obama advocated the creation of a NATIONAL POLICE FORCE AS POWERFUL AS THE ARMY. The question EVERY ONE of us should be asking is, “For who, for what?”
