Carl Cameron: Optimism growing inside McCain camp

It won’t be easy but it is do-able. What’s got Maverick, Salter, and other senior aides suddenly so bubbly? Their internal polls, in all likelihood. Lead pollster Bill McInturff pronounced the race too close to call in a memo sent out late last week that claimed things were trending their way in the battlegrounds. They must have gotten more good news over the weekend. Someone had better tell Joe the Plumber because he’s sounding even more pessimistic than I am.
Stats wizard Nate Silver puts their odds at 1.9%. Click the image to watch.

As we’ve said all along… the undecideds will break McCain because he’s safe. There are enough of them to give him the win. This isn’t rocket science… it’s just getting out the vote.
Fozzy Bear on November 3, 2008 at 9:26 PM
Nonsense. Our Dear Leader, Our Messiah, the Most Majestic One, will win tomorrow. It is ordained. You are ordered to vote for him. ;)

Kerry camp was pretty happy on Election Day 4 years ago. It means nothing. Both sides want to appear happy to keep their supporters and voters energized for one more day.

The unknown is the palin factor. That’s my prediction. Even Obama’s camp has said so. How many people, who haven’t voted in years, are going to her rallies and will vote this year…just because of her?
lorien1973 on November 3, 2008 at 9:28 PM
A slew of polls will come in late tonight and early tomorrow. The thing is if the polls right now show McCain threatening Obama’s lead, then that would just push Obama voters to the poll in record numbers. Maybe their internals show a turnout model similar to 2004, and if that’s so, then damn. I hope the smiling isn’t from the relief that it’s over.

I think there is a trend toward McCain and if we could put the election off a week or two that would be great. Unfortunately, lots of people have already voted and the clock stops in less than twelve hours.
highhopes on November 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM
Not necessarily. If McCain knew he was a long shot, he might be trumpeting the “Vote now!” line, which is what I hear Obama doing.
fossten on November 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM
Obama underperformed his polls in the primaries, he could be in for several surprises.
obladioblada on November 3, 2008 at 9:29 PM
Obama’s early voting lead in all states is only at 1% now. And that’s just party identification–there are plenty of Democrats who are NOT voting for him.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard: I will not sacrifice the Enterprise. We’ve made too many compromises already; too many retreats. They invade our space and we fall back. They assimilate entire worlds and we fall back. Not again. The line must be drawn here! This far, no further! And *I* will make them pay for what they’ve done.
Hold the line. Vote.
lorien1973 on November 3, 2008 at 9:32 PM
I would chalk this all up to hopefulness except for 1 thing-
This is all based on a polling method that oversamples Democrats by an unprecedented margin.
A party ID that makes 2006 look like a banner year for GOP registration. It makes no rational sense to overwieght by 8 to 13 percent.
I think this has always been circle jerk wish fulfillment by the MSM and polling outfits.
Either that or else every single pollster has made exactly the right guess on a tidal wave of support for Democrats.
And I think the McCain internals are telling them this is complete and utter crap.

I’m doing the opposite by distributing my dog’s waste (which I religiously collect) among the Obama supporters in the neighborhood. After all, these people wouldn’t applaud my efforts in reducing my footprint by letting my dog’s poop to disintegrate where it lies instead of ending up in one of those evil plastic bags, right?
Even if McCain wins, I might well treat these neighbors with the Obama nuggets they so richly deserve.
highhopes on November 3, 2008 at 9:33 PM
I am optimistic as well, but I don’t think we’re there yet. I would have like to have seen McCain up in more states, and not just even. Too bad the election isn’t on Thursday, since I feel like his pace of closing would get us there by then.
Still, he has finished better than I expected, and I think there is a small chance for one of the most amazing victories in US politics to occur.

KBird on November 3, 2008 at 9:33 PM
Look, if you had asked John McCain and his team 2 months ago about their chances to prevail on November 4th, they would have talked up a good narrative but deep down they probably would have known that the chances of the McCain campaign prevailing in the election in this political and economic climate could have been best described as a long shot. Right now I see the race as neck and neck; it’s anybody’s game.

Today Ladies and Gentelmen, we are in the valley, clad in our battlegear, awaken to the day by a force from within, a purpose, a mission, battle lies ahead!
We have been joined this “MORNING IN AMERICA” by PUMA’s, Reagan Democrates, RHINO’s, Conservatives, peoples of all faiths, of all social backgrounds, of ALL races, arm in arm, shoulder to shoulder, clinging to our God, our Guns, our Flag, our Constitution!
We are looking up at a huge mountain, with a fortress of the far left radicals inside awaiting our attack. The Socilialists, protected all the way up the hill by the MSM, and with Pundits blocking our paths, the task is daunting and will require all of the effort a human can muster!
But we are bolstered by our faith, comforted by that still small voice inside… Fortified by the knowledge that from our efforts here today our children and thiers will grow up in a FREE, PROUD, STRONG AMERICA… The America of our Founders, of our Grandfathers and Fathers, of our FALLEN HEROS who gave it all for our RIGHT TO FIGHT TODAY!
Drawing comfort from our friends, family, church and our mission we march onward, “RUSH”ing up the hill, tossing aside all the Pundits, embarrasing the MSM, confronting the radicals and leaving them wondering what hit them…
VICTORY AWAITS for all those willing to lay it all on the line today! Are you ready? Will you fight? Will you vote?
LET’s ROLL!
Mark Garnett on November 3, 2008 at 9:34 PM
The same pollsters are predicting a historic turnout. For that to happen, there have to be historically high numbers of Republicans as well as Democrats.
obladioblada on November 3, 2008 at 9:34 PM

At the McCain headquarters I volunteered at here in Raleigh, I was told that they could not keep “Democrats for McCain” yard signs in. (To be fair, I’ve not seen any of them but I live in a mostly Republican area). Anyways, one of the guys working there said there have been “groups of gay guys” coming as well. LOL. I think we can thank Hillbuzz for that. This is purely anecdotal, but a lady I work with was undecided until she early voted. She told me when she got in the privacy of the booth she just could not vote for Obama because she has no idea who he is “and he’s never been in charge of anything”. I thanked her! More interesting, she is a Yankee invader from PENNSYLVANIA and she told me the people of her homestate will not vote for Obama.
SouthernGent on November 3, 2008 at 9:35 PM
Two photos of crying African-ancestried folks on Drudge (Obama squeezing out one drop of saline solution for the “typical white woman” / Granny who just died, and a newspaper image of a black female foreigner weeping for the future Otopia under the Great Mocha Leader)… maybe they both know something?

Have faith in the American people and in God. No way God is letting Obama happen, unless of course it is time for the Apocalypse, because then all bets are off and the fit hits the shan big time. Wars (I mean being tested), unemployment, corruption, stealing elections, lies are true, truth is evil, the ends justify the means, yeah Obama could bring all that.

If Obama is so confident of victory then why is he campaigning tomorrow?
I’ll tell you why: because he saw the same internals that McCain did. He knows what McCain knows and what I have known for several weeks.
Obama is going to lose tomorrow – not in a squeaker but by a sizable margin. States that he thought were in the bag for him will be defecting to McCain. This thing will be over by 11 PM EST tomorrow night.
And you, my friends, will have the pleasure of going from channel to channel to savor the “What the Fark Just Happened?” look that every talking head will have plastered on their faces. You will savor the Olbermann meltdown and watch with glee as Chrissy Tingles wets his pants.
And then you will come back here and say “Gee Manly, if I only listened to you, I would not have spent so much money on antacids and booze.”
John McCain will become the 44th president of the U.S.

HornetSting on November 3, 2008 at 9:43 PM
I hope they’re right. But I think too many people have already voted. Those that are left for tomorrow have to vote in a lot higher percentage for McCain than I think they will.
But there’s always hope. The polls were wrong in all of the past elections I can remember.

bdestini on November 3, 2008 at 9:47 PM
5 Reasons why Obama will lose:
1. DNC shoulda picked Hillary in the first place. PUMAs grumble.
2. Obama should have put Hillary on his ticket. PUMAs snarl.
3. McCain picks Palin because Obama allowed him to (see 2.) PUMAs get organized. Everybody talks Palin. Base gets excited.
4. Joe the Plumber. Ordinary Americans wake up.
5. Coalgate. Workers enraged (hopefully)
And finally, Obama just can’t help letting the mask slip at crucial moments.
America saves itself.

Let me rephrase that a bit. Hillary supporters know that 8 years if Obama wins two terms, or perhaps even 12 years (more likely) if Obama wins, then loses to a republican in a Reaganesque fashion, she has no hope of ever becoming president. Her (and their) only option is for Obama to lose tomorrow.
