Breaking: Palin exonerated by Personnel Board
posted at 8:10 pm on November 3, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Sarah Palin did nothing wrong in firing Walt Monegan, the Alaskan State Personnel Board has concluded. Their independent investigator criticized the legislature’s investigator for applying the wrong law. They also said that Todd Palin did nothing wrong in pressing for action against the governor’s former brother-in-law:
A new report just released — hours before the polls open on Election Day — exonerates Gov. Sarah Palin in the Troopergate controversy.
The state Personnel Board-sanctioned investigation is the second into whether Palin violated state ethics law in firing her public safety commissioner, and it contradicts the earlier findings by a special counsel hired by the state Legislature.
Both investigations found that Palin was within her rights to fire Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.
But the new report says the Legislature’s investigator was wrong to conclude that Palin abused her power by allowing aides and her husband, Todd, to pressure Monegan and others to dismiss her ex-brother-in-law, Trooper Mike Wooten. Palin was accused of firing Monegan after Wooten stayed on the job.
It’s probably too late to address the political damage done by the partisan hack job from the legislature, but at least it will correct the record. The Personnel Board must have concluded that mind-reading isn’t its job or the legislature’s, and that a governor can terminate a political appointee for whatever reason. This has been the truth all along, but some in Alaska — and around the country — conveniently forgot it for just enough time to smear Palin.
Monegan won’t get a hearing from the Personnel Board to “clear his reputation”. Where does Palin go to clear hers after this tempest in a teapot?

Just in time for nobody to notice. Yippee.

After the way the media and the Democrats savaged Sarah Palin for being Sarah Palin, it will be a long time in me offering them any forgiveness. McCain Palin has to win to rub the little swine’s noses in their own swill.

Yes, probably true. But if she hadn’t been exonerated you definately would have heard about it as the lead story on every Obama network.
annetteharrell on November 3, 2008 at 8:14 PM
Palin acted responsibly and simply did her job. Unfortunately, she was trashed by the slimy liberals, who by the way, are the same bunch that could soon be running the country. The future looks bleak for at least half of the citizens of this country.

The fact that this has gotten any play in the media at all, plus the kerfuffle about the firing of 8 US attorneys by the Bush administration a couple of years ago, tells me that some people never will understand the concept of an at-will government appointment. Employment is for life in all government positions to these people.
And now The One is poised to increase the Federal workforce … {sigh}

-o0- on November 3, 2008 at 8:17 PM
Second in a series of interesting coincidences this election eve.
The state of Alaska exonerates the boss on the eve of her being around full time.
The more interesting thing is that Obama’s grandma decided to kick the bucket in time for the sympathy vote even though we didn’t know what the medical problem was or why Obama had fly to Haiwaii to spend minutes with the woman he called a racist. I’d suggest that somebody pulled the plug on cue to help Obama.
highhopes on November 3, 2008 at 8:18 PM
I think this whole overblown partisan affair sucked balls for Palin, but to an extent anyone that believed she fired Mo for less than ethical and honest reasons was never going to support her anyway, IMHO.
The rest of us now simply have confirmation of what we believed to be true all along.
Now Palin can begin her duties as Veep without this gnat buzzing around her head. One down, approximately 2409840928409230982 to go.

Months ago someone predicted that the strongest Dem attack against Palin would be to make her seem like a simpleton rather than to actually directly attack her. Great success, as Borat would say.
This is nice 11th hour crap and all, but it doesn’t help us. The damage is done.

At the time McCain chose Sarah Palin for his VP, it was thought by many of the right wing bloggers and media pundits who supported her that Sarah would be disqualified from consideration because of the Troopergate affair. It has taken this long to finally vindicate McCain’s decision and to reveal how gutsy it was at the time.

Those idiotic Fox All stars were trashing Palin tonite as well; talking about what a drag she’s been on the ticket. I ask you: What world do these people live in?? McCain would have been toast weeks ago without Sarah Palin- they explained this away by saying only the barest minimum of hard core conservatives were sticking by Palin. WTF?? I’m by no means a hard core conservative and I love her- I think those D.C. elites really don’t get “Real People”.
anniekc on November 3, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Glad this worked out, though a little too late. She was doing the right thing as governor. Any last minute good news is positive as voters go to the polls in a few hours.
dedalus on November 3, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Better late than never. In the unfortunate event McCain loses, Palin doesn’t have this hanging over her head in Alaska. Of course, I’d rather that she not have this hanging over her head as VP.
SAZMD on November 3, 2008 at 8:28 PM
Hmmm, just in time.
Tomorrow night the LAT will release their video of Obama praising Khalidi, the NYT will print an expose on Obama’s illegal fund raising and that long awaited ‘whitey’ tape will surface on Anderson Cooper 360.
Just in time.
fogw on November 3, 2008 at 8:29 PM
I really don’t think there was any damage. That didn’t affect anyone who was seriously going to vote for McCain-Palin. That was a minuscule story compared to Ayers/Wright/Pfleger/Rezko/Khalidi/Coal tape, etc.
And in my state, my employer can fire me because my eyes are brown and I wear blue on Tuesday. That’s part of being in a “right-to-work” state.

Sure, that’s you & me & us here… well, most of us. But what about people on the fence? My mom (a wonderful woman) expressed concern when the media was going on about Palin’s wardrobe. My mom is normally conservative, but at that moment I realized she just isn’t plugged in to the REAL news network online. She has no idea what’s going on with Obama, because the MSM doesn’t give her anything of substance.
-o0- on November 3, 2008 at 8:31 PM
To all those who ask if this exoneration will make a difference, I say
maybe not in 2008, but definately in 2012
macncheez on November 3, 2008 at 8:31 PM
Right on, right on, right on. Palin has excited a lot of people who were at best lukewarm about McCain, including myself. The libs in the media disgust me. They tore down a fine lady with more backbone than most of the RINOs in power. No matter what happens tomorrow, I have found someone who I respect and admire. The Republican party could a bunch more like her throughout Congress.

I’ve decided to completely tune out the election coverage tomorrow night. Good DVDs from when America was a great nation and a few adult beverages. If Obama wins, I won’t have to watch the end of the United States as we know it. To clarify, my point was that the narrative that Sarah Palin is a well-meaning, but unqualified candidate was devastating for her reception among independents. The left needed her to come across as a simpleton and discrediting her governing successes with this Troopergate nonsense helped them. I think this story is exonerating, but it won’t affect her image for this election.

McCain/Palin supporters don’t give a crap about this issue. The only ones who are concerned are the looney left and the only way that they could possibly be satisfied is if it could somehow be tied in to BushHitlerCheney and blamed on Halliburton.
