From SNL, two Maverick cameos plus that Affleck goof on Olbermann that caused Krazy to krash the set on Friday. McCain’s fine, although the material’s predictably weak and both segments boil down to how badly he’s losing. Not sure why he’d want to participate in reminding people of that, but the “sad grandpa” line almost makes it worth it. Note the scattered boos among the cheers when he’s introduced. Stay classy, SNL fans.
The Olby skit’s intriguing not because it’s funny but because it’s brutal and runs unusually (and unnecessarily) long, as if they extended it just to bloody him up a little longer. Why Affleck and the producers, as lefties, would want to do that — especially to a colleague at NBC — isn’t clear to me. Maybe it’s revenge for crashing the set or maybe this sentiment has leached out of MSNBC and into the network proper. Or maybe he just said something nasty to Lorne at some point in the hall. Either way, feels like score-settling. Robert Cox might have solved the puzzle: “I’d say the Hillary supporters on SNL have finally had their revenge.”
Update: Geraghty wonders, did McCain cross the line by symbolically blessing the goofs on Palin?

I don’t like SNL, haven’t thought it funny in decades, and find it particularly disturbing that such attention has been paid to the losers on that show. I don’t get it.

Comedy Gold! The McCain Fine Gold pitch was brilliant.
Bambi wouldn’t have the spine to engage in this kind of self-deprecating humor. He HAS no sense of humor.
McCain/Palin 08!!
Lurking Vet on November 2, 2008 at 11:35 AM
I don’t care why they did it, the Countdown skit was priceless. Especially the chair spinning and the violent head movements.
The QVC was great too, except for the part where Fey feels her coat while McCain jokes about how broke they are. It did kind of feel like an endorsement for their ridiculous treatment of her.
BadgerHawk on November 2, 2008 at 11:36 AM
He’s just going through the motions now.

Mac is good natured and comes across as good natured. And that is what people who saw it will take away from it. People like that in a president.
They loved it in Reagan, they will love it in McCain.
ManlyRash on November 2, 2008 at 11:42 AM
McCain stepped in it as usual. Fey mocks your VP and you smile and goof with her? The inability for McCain to counterpunch will be his downfall. If Palin is inexperienced, how can McCain fail to highlight Obama’s mere 143 days in the Senate McCain has let Obama’s two autobiographies stand as his life story. He deserves to lose.
Having lost any shred of impartiality, the MSM and the entertainment industry are dying a slow death and McCain throws them a lifeline? Please tell me how this is losing with dignity?
The MSM trolls alternative media for news like pigs looking for truffles because the MSM refuse to report anything on Obama that the alternative media does not uncover first. This should be the rhetorical end of SNL and the MSM and McCain is providing cover like the useful Republican idiot he is.
Angry Dumbo on November 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM

I laughed more at this mornings story/video on NewsBusters of the NBC News lapdog Washington DC bureau-chief (aren’t they all “bureau-chiefs”?) who waxes poetic about how Messiah “lifted himself up from the streets of Hawaii”. It’s accompanied by a photo of his elementary school with the palm trees blowing in the wind, ocean view I’m sure.
Marcus on November 2, 2008 at 11:46 AM
I actually enjoyed the QVC clip, and thought either clip let him get out part of his message. The Palin goofs weren’t that bad, and the clothes one was so highly-nuanced (like Obama’s flipping the bird to Hillary Clinton) that my wife totally missed it.
A lot of digs against Obama which the left-leaners and Dems may not have otherwise had to face. And the part when Cindy shows up is worth its weight in gold (forgive the pun).
eforhan on November 2, 2008 at 11:46 AM
Thanks for weighing in. You can check back in with the Obama campaign now.
OT: on my way back from church this morning, I traveled a stretch of road that borders two SW Ohio counties: Hamilton (Cincinnati) and Warren (just to the north). McCain-Palin signs outnumbered Obama-Biden about 6 to 1. Also, looking down the street leading to my polling place, I saw nothing but McCain-Palin signs.
BTW: Fox played some great clips of Annuld on the stump in Ohio this weekend. He was great.

He’s Hot Air’s version of Thor’s Hammer; bashing trolls and Eeyores, trying to rally the troops to keep a socialist out of the White House. I don’t see the problem.
BadgerHawk on November 2, 2008 at 11:50 AM
The reason McCain and Palin have been so warmly greeted on SNL, and perhaps partially the reason why Krazy Keith gets hammered, is because Lorne Michaels has figured out that two things:
1) Conservatives will turn out in droves if their guys get a moderately fair shake, or the Democrats get rightly hammered. Palin’s appearance was a ratings bonanza, the most watched SNL of this decade. Michaels is no dummy.
2) The pomposity and absurdity of the left is ripe for parody, and Michaels has finally recognized it. When was the last time Bill Mahr or John Stewart was legitimately funny? (I mean funny ha-ha, not “funny” clap-clap.)
Michaels has made a decision to follow the humor, one that happily coincides with boosting his ratings.
P.S. By the way, Colbert is genuinely funny, but often his funniest lines come at the expense of lefties. He stumbles into humor while trying to parody the right. Plus, I’m not totally convinced that Colbert isn’t secretly one of us. He is a very devout Catholic from South Carolina, afterall.
DelD on November 2, 2008 at 11:50 AM
I’m no fan of SNL, but the QVC skit was cleverly conceived and well executed. The capacity to laugh at oneself is generally viewed as a plus and it certainly won’t hurt McCain.
RedWinged Blackbird on November 2, 2008 at 11:51 AM
I heard on Fox and Friends this morning that Afflack really cannot stand Olby. Maybe there’s some truth to it, or maybe they were projecting.
I loved that he, Miss Precious Perfect and his mother have to find a new apartment! Hilarious!

Cardiganfox on November 2, 2008 at 11:52 AM
I agree. The laughter and applause during and after the skits sounded pretty friendly too.
And…Olbermann sketch too long?
I beg to differ. I thoroughly enjoyed Every. Single. Creamy. Delicious. Moment of that savage takedown of The Ego. Ben Affleck dog-snarfing into the camera was HILARIOUS. Great skit.

I live in Portland, OR. While I have hardly ever seen McCain/Palin signs in people’s front yards, I see very few Obama signs in people’s front yard either. This is a very liberal city. It is the only reason why this very red state is ever listed under blue. I also drive by the Obama campaign headquarters whenever I go to martial arts practice and I hardly ever see anyone in there.

I decided to take a count of the signs I saw. 79 McCain and 13 Obama (including several that said POSTAL WORKERS FOR OBAMA). We live in the country but on our very long road there are 14 McCain signs and 1 Obama sign. I predict McCain will take Ohio.

The way I see, they both did infomercials.
One candidate did it as a joke, to show his sense of humor and laugh with the rest of the country.
The other did it in dead seriousness, in a creepy sort of manner, trying to sway voters but instead came off as a half-hour of “see how horrible we all are” fodder.
The Countdown skit was spot on. :)

Of course you don’t see the problem, BadgerHawk. You’re not a troll.
The McCain stuff was funny — I thought Cindy was hilarious in particular, but the Olbermann thing was hilarious. If ever someone deserved an extended skewering, it’s that guy.
Mr. D on November 2, 2008 at 12:06 PM
If Obama wins, SNL is going to have to start taking shots at their own. They’d look really odd blaming Republicans for future problems if the dems overwhelmingly controlled the House/Senate, and the Executive Branch.
I can’t believe Affleck did that skit. It was a bit long, but awesome.
watchmen on November 2, 2008 at 12:06 PM
The skits were funny. McCain has always had a funny bone. Unlike the One who acts like every joke about him is a personal attack.
The only time the Obama campaign headquarters here was full was on Halloween. When they were handing out free candy. Otherwise, it looks like a morgue.

McCain was great. I didn’t know he had it in him. He came across as a good sport and he delivered his lines better than some of the actors do. He was very funny.
That’s the first time I’ve seen Fey do Palin and it is uncanny. She’s got the voice down pat. That, too, was funny.
But the Olberman skit was hilarious all the way thru. The only way it would have been funnier is if it had gone on longer, like Keith’s Special Komments go on and on and on. It was cringe inducing in exactly the way listening to Olberman is for anyone with half a brain.
Jaynie59 on November 2, 2008 at 12:12 PM
Yeah. Good luck with that.

I think the QVC skit was brilliant comedicaly, and a big positive for McCain-Palin.The most troubling part was the Palin t-shirt thing, but overall, it was win-win. This had to humanize and warm some undecideds up to the ticket.
I think it also makes clear the the SNL brain is a PUMA brain. I’m feeling good. Or, at least, less bad.
Tuesday night is going to be unbelievable drama.

The Olbermann spoof was WONDERFUL. I was stunned to see them rip the Olberdork so rharshly, and loved every minute of it.
I thought the QVC skit was good too, although I’m tired of the wardrobe references. I’ve lost all respect for Tina Fey.
cannonball on November 2, 2008 at 12:17 PM
Whenever McCain shows his warm, human side, the “pundits” get nervous. I sometimes think that, in their zeal to create a “perfect” candidate, they’d really rather have a soulless, humorless automaton like Osama Obama.
If the entire MSM and the surrender monkeys of his party had essentially written him off, would Obama still be able to poke a little gentle fun at himself and get in a couple good-natured digs at his opponent? I doubt it. Hell, after seeing his “performance” at the Al Smith dinner, it’s clear The Messiah can’t even crack a decent joke when he’s riding high.
MrScribbler on November 2, 2008 at 12:19 PM
The Affleck/Olbermann clip was spot-on! I laughed at Miss Precious Perfect and realized my cat, Mavis, was vastly undernamed.

A lot of folks in the Obama campaign are going to be very, very unhappy Tuesday night.
ManlyRash on November 2, 2008 at 12:20 PM
I don’t see how his appearance would hurt McCain. Self-deprecating humor, especially at this level, only shows folks that you can take a joke… you’re actually HUMAN. And face it, he’s pretty damn funny!
And playing along the Palin jabs? Genius. It effectively takes those jabs from the realm of reality and moves them to the realm of make-believe, which negates said jabs down the stretch, putting them out of reach of the MSM pundits.
All IMHO, of course.

McCain is seeking forgiveness from SNL and the MSM for running against the One. From the looks of things McCain will be doing pharma ads next month.

People refer a president who is good natured and has a sense of humor. They will like McCain.
ManlyRash on November 2, 2008 at 12:25 PM
Ditto.
You know one thing that would make me feel even better? I wish someone, preferably Sarah Palin, would stick up for President Bush sometime before Tuesday. Not his policies, not his politics. Just him.
He’s a good man and nothing he has ever said or done deserves the hatred that has been spewed at him over the last 8 years. He may not go down in history as a great president, but he did the best he could and that’s better than most would have done.
We are the greatest country on Earth, and we have a good, decent man at the helm. Political “experts” would probably say it would be the kiss of death. But I think we’re all a helluva lot smarter than those “experts” think we are.
He done good and somebody should say so.
Jaynie59 on November 2, 2008 at 12:25 PM
I thought it was funny when Palin went rogue during the QVC skit.
CanadianGuy on November 2, 2008 at 12:27 PM
Affleck captured the Essence of Olbermann perfectly. I don’t even blame him for starting to crack up a couple of times; no way in hell could I do Olby for that long with a straight face. Or without stopping to wipe up the spittle. By the end of it, I was worried that he might have a stroke.
The Monster on November 2, 2008 at 12:29 PM
I thought McCain was very funny. Humor is a great part of healing. Here where I live in The Peoples Republic of Califunia. *Pun intended* Our city has over taken Democrats. There are more Republicans then DemocRATS. Read a article local. Says McCain is 2 points behind! Hope that was correct. I know a lot in Santa Maria are for McCain. Their signs are every where in Orcutt. Don’t see one Nobama sign. It is thick with the trolls today. Don’t they have a Nobama site to spew their ignorance? I believe that people are registering in droves to come out and stop the dictator from winning! They say that 95% of blacks are going to vote for NOBAMA. Hmmmmm, my sister in law is black, she isn’t for him. And a lot of her family members are not for him. The have a site Blacks for McCain. Is pretty impressing. McCain/Palin 08! All the Way!

I agree with those here who say this will help McCain. He was genuinely funny and it’s obvious that he can goof on himeself in a way Obama could not or would not. McCain comes through as the genuine article here. I think even if he didn’t change many liberal minds, many were probably surprised to find that they liked him. I think this type of thing can certainly help swing the undecideds.
t.ferg on November 2, 2008 at 12:49 PM
McCain did Sarah Palin no favors with that. He wants to make sure that he gets back on Chris Matthews show the first day after the vote. He is trying to make good with the media.

I don’t watch SNL every week. More like twice a year. But on the McCain and Obama SNL appearances – it does seem that McCain was making fun of himself. Mostly. When Obama was on SNL, was he doing this at all, or just making fun of others. Such as Hillary Clinton and John McCain.
I can’t see Obama making fun of himself, or joking that he’s leading because he’s black, or doing a sketch with a Ayers or Wright impersonator or anything that would remotely be self-deprecating.

You got that right. BHO’s idea of laughing at himself, during that press dinner, was to joke about how he was “too awesome” or “wasn’t born in a manger”. No one really found that funny, as could be heard in the pity laughs he was given. BHO can’t make fun of himself because he already is a living parody.

The first two clips were pretty funny, not great but not bad. The QVC was the better of the two. Nice to see the Cindy cameo. The Olbermann clip was awesome! The Olbermann skit was absolute gold. Double points to Affleck to doing it with gusto.

I thought all three were funny. I don’t think anybody will take anythihng away from this other than McCain\Palin are good natured. Unlike the big 0 who told the reporters to get back on the bus (tick or treating is so important that he had to come home to take his daughter yet gets mad at the press for following along? I think he got bad news that day myself) while Palin let the media come along with her and Piper as they trick or treated… McPalin are real Americans who love this Country. God bless them. I have no doubt they will win Tuesday.

Viewers of SNL will be able say that John and Cindy McCain are people they would want to have a beer with. Cindy showed that she a fun gal. Most of deciding who you’re going to vote for is philosophical but a small part is also how you connect to them as human beings. McCain and Palin have both shown that they can be serious out on the campaign trail while also being able to loosen up and poke fun at themselves because essentially they have strong characters. This reassures voters. I think that undecided voters who saw SNL will be more inclined to vote for McCain/Palin.

John McCain was trying to sign off of the Palin fiasco. He moves slowly but the man is a thinker. He knows exactly what he was doing. Sen. McCain gave tacit approval to what may come in the way of mudslinging towards Palin post-election if Obama wins.
I though he was much funnier. But I am saddened by what I perceive to be an obvious slight toward Palin. I would rather lose than fight like a pussy. Sen. McCain let Tina Fey do his bidding last night. That’s not fighting; that’s conspiring. Wuss!
Palin/Palin is the ticket for 2012. The charge of “populism” will subside and what will be left is a party with a young, experienced line-up….like next year’s Dodgers. Pawlenty, Jindal, Rommney, Palin, Steele. Dude Palin and Joe the Plumber will likely have ramped up onto the national playing field by that time. Also there are many heavy-hitters waiting in the wings to make their names too: Mclintock deserves a national stage, Blackwell is tried and tested. Bob Corker out of TN is fresh meat too.
What exactly is a troll? Is someone a troll just because they disagree with you? Or is it that they disagree and have too much attitude, sass or just seem too smart for you to engage?
What about those of us who often agree with your ideas but not your pisspants posturing? What about those of us who have been commenting longer than you? Trolls too? If so, why sign up to be inundated with trolls? (Kinda reminds me of those herculean homophobes hiding their boyhump fantasies behind gaybashing rhetoric.)
What about your mom? She must have disagreed with you on some points? Is she a troll? Are you a son-of-a-troll?
I also wonder did you sign up here to enter an echo chamber? Didn’t you read the various conforming and dissenting opinions before you registered?
I am curious as to how exactly one does express a disagreement with you and not be insulted in return.
I am pretty sure that I’ll be called a troll by you or your ilk. But I am wondering if you are capable of responding with logic and clarity to someone so tragically limited in their synaptic firing capacity.

Buckeye Sam:
Time magazine has a piece on the political scene in Hamilton County, Ohio, and why it’s a conservative stronghold. Rather illuminating. Click here. (From an exiled Cincinnatian living in DC. Go Bearcats!)
