Obama: We’ll bankrupt any new coal plants

The folks at Naked Emperor News have unearthed another interesting nugget from a Barack Obama interview from months ago. In January 2008, Obama spoke about his approach to global warming and cap-and-trade systems, and he had a warning for anyone foolish enough to invest in coal:

So, if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can — it’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.

Yesterday, we looked at Obama’s notions of government sending “price signals” to change behavior that it finds objectionable, especially on energy.  This is the way Obama intends to do it.  Coal provides 49% of domestic electrical power, and any rise in the cost of producing that energy will raise its cost to consumers and reduce the amount produced.

This comes as no great shock, pun intended.  Obama already called for a 15% reduction in demand for electricity — at the same time he and his allies want transportation to switch from gasoline to electricity.  Obama never explained this particular contradiction.  How does one switch tens of millions of vehicles from gasoline to electricity while not Increasing demand, let alone by cutting it 15%?  And when trying to break free from a recession, the nation will need greater production in energy, not a reduction.

The coal-based economics of Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and other states will be the first to feel this new policy.  Let’s hope the voters there pay attention.

Addendum: If anyone has a transcript from this interview, let me know.

Update: Free Republic transcribed this video (via Gateway Pundit):

Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I’ve said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else’s out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I’ve said with respect to coal, I haven’t been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It’s just that it will bankrupt them.

I’d still like to get a transcript of the entire interview.  I believe that the San Francisco Chronicle interviewed Obama in January of this year, but they have no transcript on their site.  That seems very odd for a newspaper interview, especially one in which they’ve posted video.

You ain’t lying there.

BallisticBob on November 2, 2008 at 11:34 AM

Do you think Johnathan Martin over at Politico is now choking on his lead words to this paragraph?

Barack Obama is actually on record supporting the expansion of such technologies, but Biden’s words are prompting Republicans to lick their lips about the potential resonance of the issue in key coal states such as Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Colorado.

Comments apparently are closed to his blog post I link above. Sad. Hopefully his ears are burning.

I’m sure the have already seen this and one of them, somewhere is already at work on an ad.

I wouldn’t be so sure about that.

I believe Naked Emperor is a one wo/man operation. Says something about one determined individual vs a totally sucky press. I don’t know if this is an official ad or not but this is also good. Check out Hillbuzz’s post on Palin hater’s assault in Chicago.

And is it just me that is concerned about Obama’s national civilian security force (or is that personal militia?)

That Man, Mr. BO is a fukking di**head. I am going to email this to my friends over in Michigan, Ohio, Pa. and other states. He is going to do his best to really screw up our Country. I will do what I can to try to stop this. Biden is a a&&. This ruined my breakfast too.

Sat down all 3 kids here (22, 20, 18) and talked Obama policies, with backup objective evidence provided to quell the crap they hear from friends, college professors, etc. The PatrickS house is now delivering 5 votes for McCain/Palin….unfortunately in CA though. Sure as hell e-mailing relatives/friends “back thar” though….

So the coal producing states are going into the export business, if they are allowed to produce coal at all, meanwhile it’s lights out for America. Who could possible vote for this Obama fool.

ManlyRash and others,

I’m finding that it takes a few clicks to find usable contact details, so if anyone wants to join in pick a single letter, or for example, email the I, J and Ks as there are only four.

Here’s a suggested form letter for a this, or anyone else you want to mail:

Subject: Video: Obama promises to “bankrupt” new coal plants

Hi,

I’d like to bring to your attention a story which I know will be of interest to your readers, given the importance of coal mining and related industries to Pennsylvania’s economy.

A video has appeared on the internet of a January 2008 interview in which Barack Obama promises emphatically to “bankrupt” any new coal plants built in the US.

Here’s the link:

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/11/02/obama-well-bankrupt-any-new-coal-plants/#comment-1587093

Please bring this vital information to the attention of your readers.

Sincerely,

EnglishMike on November 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM

I’m telling you, these PUMAs are doing some HEAVY LIFTING over there for John McCain/Sarah Palin. DO YOUR PART, TOO. It is your country!!!!

Mommypundit on November 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Obama already called for a 15% reduction in demand for electricity — at the same time he and his allies want transportation to switch from gasoline to electricity.

The Math….

1 Barrel of oil = 1640.8 kilowatt hours

US used 9,468,000 barrels per day 7/25/08 for motor gasoline.

Or 15,535,094,400 Kilowatt hours equivalent in gasoline for transportation, PER DAY, or 15.5 Billion Kilowatt hours per day.

Total electricity generated by US in 2006, 4059 BILLION Kilowatt hours,

Or 11.12 Billion Kilowatt hours per day.

So, we would have to increase electricity generation by more than DOUBLE to 240% of current procudtion…

CAN’T happen folks.

Romeo13 on November 2, 2008 at 11:43 AM

It’s easy to get caught up in the video thinking about new coal plants that he will bankrupt with his admitted onerous Gore like boondoggle–cap and trade.

What should not be forgotten is that all existing coal plants will fall under the same financial penalty despite whatever grandfathering they beg for. Older plants will close and new ones will not be built.

abinitioadinfinitum on November 2, 2008 at 11:34 AM

I hate to talk about my gut reaction, but the predictions of a Obama landslide don’t make intuitive sense. The size of Palin rallies and the enthusiasm of the base seem to point to a much closer race.

Perhaps more importantly, Obama has a history of underperforming in the primaries by wide margins. We’ll see if this holds true in the general election.

From NRO http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NTFkZDA3ODgyMDgxMzRlNjMxMjMwMWE0YjYyYWE4M2M=

In fact, Obama generally underperformed his standing in polls before major Democratic primary contests.

The RCP average of polls in New Hampshire had Obama leading by 8.3 percent; he lost by 2.6 percent. In Nevada, the RCP average was 4 percent; she won by 5.5 percent. In Pennsylvania, the RCP average was Clinton by 6.1 percent; she won by 9.2 percent. The final RCP average in Ohio had Clinton by 7.1 percent, but she won by 10.1 percent. In Texas, the RCP average had Clinton ahead by 1.7 percent, but she won by 3.5 percent. In some other states, including Oregon and the Carolinas, Obama did overperform the final polls.

Democrats must have the following voting blocks to win a general election:

1> Black vote – got it.
2> Hispanic vote – very questionable!
3> Female vote – don’t have it, not even close.
4> Left center white vote (Conservative Dem) – don’t have it!

Agreed. The polls are all weighted heavily for Democratic turnout. They are also calling for historic turnout rates. However, for the historic turnout rates they are projecting, enormous numbers of Republicans must also turn out.

There are too many center-right Democrats in places like PA and OH and they won’t vote for a leftist. It also seems to me that they’ve underestimated the enthusiasm level of or Republicans–even Republicans who aren’t thrilled about McCain are anxious to vote against Obama. Other than the youth vote, there aren’t going to be many voters who sit this one out.

Are you kidding me? Some of you people are so unbelievably uptight that you can’t even recognize BLATANT sarcasm. It’s a comment thread, buddy, lighten up.

The whole point of the comment I left was a dig at the increasingly retarded (but still the same, almost verbatim) statement that the Obama campaign releases every time some thing that actually describes Obama’s policies comes to light.

I apologize to everyone for breaking the rules of the (apparent) person in charge of this comment thread. Rule #1 being, “If ManlyRash doesn’t get your post, then it must be trolling. Can’t be anything else because I’m a genius.”

Anyway. I sent this link out to almost everyone on my address book list in gmail. I never, ever spam peoples’ inboxes with political stuff, but this is just too important. The fact that the odds of it making the MSM news cycle are slim to none makes it all the more important for each of us to get the message out to our friends and family.

Stuff like this (ya know, what Obama actually believes in) is the best chance McCain has at winning the election. People have clearly shown that his associations do not matter (I would say this has a lot to do with the fact that the MSM downplays them). If enough people can see, hear, and read his comments, it just might be enough to swing the election in our favor.

I took the liberty (while i still have my liberty) of writing an e-mail that I would encourage all of you to send out to anyone you can. Use the whole thing, use part of it, add to it, whatever, just get the word out. Many of the swings states would be directly affecting by this ridiculous policy!!! I titled it OBAMA Coal and You.

Hey,
Please go to this link, the video is only about two minutes, but it extremely important.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdi4onAQBWQ

During an interview with a San Francisco radio station Obama gives his thoughts on the coal industry.

No matter which side of the global warming debate you currently fall it is clear that the Democratic party and their leader, Barack Obama, are intent on using their argument for man-made global warming to drastically change our society. Right now, 49% of the electricity we use to heat and power our homes comes from coal, and the coal industry produces jobs upwards of 100,000. Obama’s goal is to put such tight regulations on the coal industry that it goes bankrupt.

While we can all agree that we would like to be good stewards of the environment it is apparent that at this moment we don’t have any “clean” alternatives that could replace coal powered electricity if Obama’s policies bankrupt it. This reality brings to mind some questions that we should ask ourselves before we head into the voting booth on Tuesday:
1. If I am a coal worker, would bankrupting coal power plants be good for my career?
2. If I am part of the 49% of households that use coal powered electricity, how will I turn on my lights, tv, microwave if the coal industry is bankrupted?
3. If I am part of the 49% of households that use coal powered electricity, how will I warm my home in the winter and cool it in the summer?
4. If I am being told that electric cars are the wave of the future because they don’t use gas from the terrible oil industry, yet these very electric cars would then need to run off of the electricity produced from coal does that make any sense? (Bonus question: if I buy an electric car and then the coal industry is bankrupted how will I power my car?)
5. If coal powered electricity is more expensive to produce because of taxation and regulation will my power bill go up or down?
6. If the supply of coal powered energy is decreased will demand on nuclear power, home heating oil and natural gas go up or down? If the demand for nuclear power, home heating oil, and natural gas goes up will by power bill go up or down?

This is NOT some hokey chain letter where I will claim if you don’t forward it on to 5 people you will have a piano drop on our head or you will develop some annoying but non-life threatening rash. The consequences of not getting the word out are much worse; electing a man who despises capitalism, the very engine that has made us the most prosperous and free nation in the history of the world.

We have two days to stop this from happening and its definitely not too late. It is obvious that with few exception the media will not get the word out, so it is up to us to educate our family, friends and neighbors about this important issue. It is up to YOU! Who do you know who lives in a coal producing state? Who do you know who uses coal powered electricity? Who do you know who doesn’t want to pay more for their power bill?

Go McCain/Palin!

I especially liked how the retard, BHO, said that this “force” must be as large and well-funded as our regular military. Of course, no one in the media ever bothered questioning why we would need as much firepower for use against Americans as we need to defend ourselves from threats the world over, including nuclear-armed states.

This whole election is so surreal that I feel as if we have all been dragged through the looking glass into a world devoid of rationality or sense. It is just unbelievable.

No matter what the election result, I wonder what the reaction is going to be after it’s over and all the real dirt on BHO, that was intentionally kept under wraps, finally comes spilling out.

progressoverpeace on November 2, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Mommypundit on November 2, 2008 at 11:38 AM

Sorry, gang, but there are 120,000 people who work in the coal industry, and tens of millions of voters in Pennsylvania, alone. Most of them are liberals who can’t add two plus two, and will gladly throw the 120,000 under the bus “for the environment”.

What they can’t figure out is that Caterpillar, for example, employs another 101,000 people worldwide, and they supply a lot of the mining equipment to the industry. The railroads, trucks, and boats that move coal – millions of employees. This is half of our electrical supply.

But the employee-economy relationship is complicated for people who are so economically illiterate, and they are easily fooled by Obama claims that “green energy” sources will provide “millions” of new jobs. The real key information is energy cost. When their electrical bills triple under Obama, they’ll understand.

Utility costs are “class blind” – which is to say that if you make $20,000 a year (under Obama, this classifies you as third-world), you still need a basic amount of electricity and gasoline just to live, but if you make $1 million dollars a year, you don’t need that much more.

So, as Rush likes to parody the press – “Obama triples energy cost – women and minorities hardest hit!”

Good luck waiting for that headline…
