Obama: I’ll make energy prices “skyrocket”

posted at 1:30 pm on November 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

In another clip from the same January 2008 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle in which Barack Obama promised to bankrupt anyone foolish enough to build coal-burning power plants, he also made an interesting admission about his entire energy plan.  Obama told the editors that his policies would make energy prices “skyrocket” as the energy industry passed along the exorbitant costs of his cap-and-trade policy:

The problem is not technical, uh, and the problem is not mastery of the legislative intricacies of Washington. The problem is, uh, can you get the American people to say, “This is really important,” and force their representatives to do the right thing? That requires mobilizing a citizenry. That requires them understanding what is at stake. Uh, and climate change is a great example.

You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.

They — you — you can already see what the arguments will be during the general election. People will say, “Ah, Obama and Al Gore, these folks, they’re going to destroy the economy, this is going to cost us eight trillion dollars,” or whatever their number is. Um, if you can’t persuade the American people that yes, there is going to be some increase in electricity rates on the front end, but that over the long term, because of combinations of more efficient energy usage, changing lightbulbs and more efficient appliance, but also technology improving how we can produce clean energy, the economy would benefit.

If we can’t make that argument persuasively enough, you — you, uh, can be Lyndon Johnson, you can be the master of Washington. You’re not going to get that done.

Energy prices skyrocketing will leave the economy in tatters, as we saw earlier this year.  While no one doubts the need to start transitioning to better sources of energy, the manner in which that gets done means the difference of whether it gets done at all.  A stagnant or receding economy does not produce scientific breakthroughs, especially when government both increases taxes and imposes steep cost burdens on energy.  That cuts into both manufacturing and R&D, because as profits fall, fewer dollars go into research — which means that all of these wonderful developments would get delayed, or go unrealized altogether.

We need to plan for the transition better than what Obama proposes.  We need to use our own reserves of oil, natural gas, coal, and shale to cushion the economy while we develop the alternatives and build the infrastructure to deliver it.  That’s what John McCain proposed in his Lexington Project.

Price shocks on energy is the last thing this economy needs.  It would be worse than the taxes Obama promises to impose on investment, and would have the same depressive effect.  It’s an utter disaster.

There is no doubt that an Obama administration will be an absolute disaster.
When you have the leader of France calling you naive and weak on foreign policy, you are in trouble.

When your main call to experience is your failure at being a community organizer, wrote two books about yourself, and spent your whole senate career running for President, you are in trouble.

When you kick off your political career, served on a board that wasted over 100 million dollars, with a
domestic terrorist that is also a proud Marxist and continues to this day to call for the overthrow of the US government, you are in trouble.

When America suffers the worst economic meltdown it has experienced in years due to the policies and protection of democrats like Obama,Dodd, and Frank but people think that they are the ones to deliver us from this mess, you are
in trouble.

When Mr. judgment tells the world that even through the surge that has won the war in Iraq is a “success”but he would still vote against it knowing what he knows now,you
are in trouble.

When the followers of the peoples temple of Obama think that raising taxes, eliminating the Bush tax cuts, and increased spending is the way to go in a down economy, you are in trouble.

When Mr. judgment wants to cripple our energy needs based on the bogus pronouncements from idiots like Al Gore, you are
in trouble:

Junk Science: Al Gore blames the Burma tragedy on global warming despite growing evidence to the contrary. Could the hype be related to his financial interests?
So why the hype? Well, global warming is a growth industry designed to keep Earth and some bank accounts green.
Gore himself joined the venture capital group, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers just last September. On May 1, the firm announced a $500 million investment in maturing green technology firms called the Green Growth Fund.
The group announced another $700 million to be invested over the next three years in green-tech startup firms. But if the green technology business, uh, cools down, there will be no return on that investment. There would be no need for such investments if global warming wasn’t a threat. So Gore just launched, among other things, a $300 million on an ad campaign to convince us it is so.
Speaking at a conference in Monterey, Calif., on March 1, the former vice president admitted to having “a stake” in a number of green investments into which he recommended attendees put money rather than “subprime carbon assets” such as tar sands and shale oil. He also is co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, which sells carbon offsets that allow rich polluters to continue polluting with a clear conscience.

Yea, good thing we have all these super smart liberals to show us the way.

CP on November 2, 2008 at 2:11 PM

The press is dead. We the people have to do the work the press won’t do. That’s why Obama cannot win, his first 2 acts will be the Freedom of Choice Act and the Fairness Doctrine. Then when father who impregnate their minor daughters multiple times and take them the get abortions at Dr. Tiller’s clinic, it will no longer be illegal to fail to report the suspected child abuse to the state, and the Fairness Doctrine will have killed off all talk radio so it can’t be reported.

JustTruth101 on November 2, 2008 at 2:13 PM

It is hard to believe this moron is leading in the polls, it really is. I guess my fellow Americans are just not interested in knowing what Obama really wants to turn America into. Maybe they just dismiss stuff like this out of hand. Maybe they believe Obama really doesn’t mean what he says, or maybe they think he just misspeaks. I guess it will take a total disaster to wake them up.

Dollayo on November 2, 2008 at 2:16 PM

I suggest getting familiar with these words:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory. for ever and ever.
Amen

Dorvillian on November 2, 2008 at 2:20 PM

And it should be emphasized that this is not something Obama said way back in the day, when he was still a socialist (er whatever), this was said less than a year ago, during this very campaign season.

OH, God. Dear Lord, please spare us from this idiot wannabe dictator (and spare us from the fools that WANT him to be that dictator.

Not that McCain is a whole lot better on this particular subject, because he is a ‘cap and trade’ idiot too.

Can we just have a complete do-over? Maybe this time pick someone that is economically sensible for the GOP, and have the Dems pick Hillary… (Or ANYONE other than 0bama….. Second look at Dennis Kucinich?)

As lame and liberal as Bush has gotten, I’m to the point that I would be kind of glad if he proved the lefty moonbats correct and suspended the election and declared himself President For Life.

AND, I’ve had that creepy song by those creepy kids praising 0bama running through my mind constantly since I woke up.

You’ve been warned … Obama wants to destroy the US economy. Energy, and especially electricity, is the life blood of modern society. Without electricity at cheap affordable prices, business as we know it will cease to exist.

This is punitive.

Just wanted to pass this along. My young cousin was for Obama. Her parents are for McCain. Her dad is former military and her mother a rescued Korean. The youngster was all about “Hope” and “Change” and Obama being “cool”.

And THEN it hit. See my young cousin has a J O B and when she heard the “spread the wealth” comment, and Obama being a socialism supporter pushed by Joe and all the other stuff that has followed regarding Obama taking her money, well needless to say she has changed her vote. So, it seems there really is something to the 1 in 8 that can change their minds and go for McCain.

There is tons of evidence to show McCain can win and will win. However, Manly is sooooo right in getting out to vote, and taking everyone you can with you when you go to vote for McCain. Make phone calls, go door to door or give some money. It does not matter what you do, but you must turn out to vote and help us drag McCain over the finish line. If you love life, freedom and this nation; fight for her like you life depends on it! Because it does!

progressoverpeace on November 2, 2008 at 5:01 PM

The sad thing is none of this is new. Anyone paying attention should know that Obama wants energy prices to increase. Mark Levin has been talking about this for months, explaining how devastating Obama will be for states like West Virginia, Pennsylvania, etc, yet these fools are lining up to vote for him. If Obama gets his way on coal, WV will pretty much be destroyed as a state. It’s already poor enough. This will be the final nail in the coffin.

Seriously, when did Americans become so dumb?

xblade on November 2, 2008 at 5:01 PM

McCain started to talk about this in his speech this afternoon in Pennsylvania but then backed off simply saying Obama was against coal. McCain likes to speak without notes but yet seems incapable of making a detailed argument off the top of his head. If he doesn’t like to work with the Teleprompter he should swallow his pride and read Obama’s direct quotes from notes.

Apparently McCain’s running mate, who is a far better campaigner than he is, went directly after Obama on this issue this afternoon. It’s outrageous that McCain would not have known about Obama’s speech long before now. He ought to have been hammering this home in the coal producing states for the past two months.

I agree. McCain really ran a subpar campaign these last few months. He got out-manuevered on taxes, refused to explain to America the role of Fannie in the financial mess, and never really explained why Obama’s policies wouldn’t work. It’s his own fault if he loses.
