Obama: I’ll make energy prices “skyrocket”

posted at 1:30 pm on November 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

In another clip from the same January 2008 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle in which Barack Obama promised to bankrupt anyone foolish enough to build coal-burning power plants, he also made an interesting admission about his entire energy plan.  Obama told the editors that his policies would make energy prices “skyrocket” as the energy industry passed along the exorbitant costs of his cap-and-trade policy:

The problem is not technical, uh, and the problem is not mastery of the legislative intricacies of Washington. The problem is, uh, can you get the American people to say, “This is really important,” and force their representatives to do the right thing? That requires mobilizing a citizenry. That requires them understanding what is at stake. Uh, and climate change is a great example.

You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.

They — you — you can already see what the arguments will be during the general election. People will say, “Ah, Obama and Al Gore, these folks, they’re going to destroy the economy, this is going to cost us eight trillion dollars,” or whatever their number is. Um, if you can’t persuade the American people that yes, there is going to be some increase in electricity rates on the front end, but that over the long term, because of combinations of more efficient energy usage, changing lightbulbs and more efficient appliance, but also technology improving how we can produce clean energy, the economy would benefit.

If we can’t make that argument persuasively enough, you — you, uh, can be Lyndon Johnson, you can be the master of Washington. You’re not going to get that done.

Energy prices skyrocketing will leave the economy in tatters, as we saw earlier this year.  While no one doubts the need to start transitioning to better sources of energy, the manner in which that gets done means the difference of whether it gets done at all.  A stagnant or receding economy does not produce scientific breakthroughs, especially when government both increases taxes and imposes steep cost burdens on energy.  That cuts into both manufacturing and R&D, because as profits fall, fewer dollars go into research — which means that all of these wonderful developments would get delayed, or go unrealized altogether.

We need to plan for the transition better than what Obama proposes.  We need to use our own reserves of oil, natural gas, coal, and shale to cushion the economy while we develop the alternatives and build the infrastructure to deliver it.  That’s what John McCain proposed in his Lexington Project.

Price shocks on energy is the last thing this economy needs.  It would be worse than the taxes Obama promises to impose on investment, and would have the same depressive effect.  It’s an utter disaster.

But increasing taxes on corporations and oil companies won’t effect consumers?

Energy prices skyrocketing will leave the economy in tatters, as we saw earlier this year.

Much worse than that. SOaring energy prices, and the resulting economic contraction, will push our monetary system past the breaking point. The world will experience, for the first time ever, the collapse of the world’s trade and reserve currency (the store of monetary value that the whole world relies on). The consequences of this would be unimaginable. Absolutely unimaginable.

No doubt the Gore Battalions and Pelosi Brigades of Obama’s Hope and Change Civilian Security Force will help market forces to convince the existing coal power plants to close up shop.

After all, there are times to rely on Hope and Change and times to roll up your sleeves and help it along.

Exit Question: Will the enlistment bonuses extend to the newly unemployed or reserved for the select few that are on Obama’s donation list?

It’s outrageous that statements of this importance made 10 months ago are just now receiving the attention they deserve.

Thanks to the gross incompetence, unprofessionalism and intellectual dishonesty of its free press – and the dreadful campaign conducted by John McCain – America is now no longer a functioning democracy.

But did you notice what Sarah Palin was wearing yesterday?
—-

“That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.”

The key words here are, “we can invest”.

By “we”, he is referring to the government. Socialists always use the word “invest” to refer to government spending.

America has no clue of the kind of change Obama has in mind.

Why didn’t the McCain campaign go over every statement Obama ever made with a fine tooth comb? Why is this coming out two days before the election? And why aren’t McCain and Palin mentioning it on the stump today???

ctmom on November 2, 2008 at 12:58 PM

Don’t forget the dirty little secret behind cap and trade–the government runs the program. Everyone knows that the coal industry as it now stands producing 49% of our electricity can’t make the adjustments necessary to survive cap and trade. It pressed hard enough it will have to shut down plants. The Goreites have no problem with that and the shortages of electricity that will follow. The end, lower co2, justifies the means, closed plants and electrical shortages. These are the same people, including Obama, who view $5-10 a gallon on gas as very acceptable. Crushing the suburbs is also part of their grand redesign.

The fact that McCain also supports this with some modifications is extremely depressing.

patrick neid on November 2, 2008 at 12:58 PM

You rock, Ed.

Ace of Spades got onboard with a flaming skull to support you in bringing this great story to the world’s attention.

I’m hoping the McCain campaign, RNC, state GOP campaigns, or 527s see the legs this story has and cut some wicked, swing-state Obama ballbusting ads.

These Obama quotes are very revealing and put Biden’s truthful statement to that girl at the ropeline, followed by his lying statements in the debate, in stark relief.

Speaking of coal, ever try to make steal without large amounts of it?

This would be devastating for the economy!

Christoph on November 2, 2008 at 12:58 PM

From Fox news:

The latest Investor’s Business Daily-TechnoMetrica poll out Sunday showed the race with just a 2-point spread, with Obama at 46.7 percent, McCain with 44.6 percent and 8.7 percent of the 844 likely voters still undecided.

While no one doubts the need to start transitioning to better sources of energy

Wrong, wrong, wrong, Ed. Wow.

The “need” to transition to “better sources of energy” is purely a function of cost effectiveness, price, availability (all of them obviously interactive with each other). Period.

The best source of energy (or building materials, or animal protein, or vitamin supplements, or automobiles) is determined by price, availability, and technical factors. There is no non-market magic factor making one energy source “better” than another. One might think of something like pollution (in either production or use of a fuel) – but that’s an externality amenable to technological mitigation. In any case, you can roll all the costs into the total cost (include waste storage/disposal for nukes, for example) and still – your rational choice will be based on price signals. REAL price signals – not distorted ones produced by non-market intervention by government.

The failure by almost everyone (including most who are otherwise rational about economic matters) to think about energy intelligently never ceases to amaze and depress me.

But having unleashed that long-standing b*tch point, I can now add to my very long list of things that would have not just sunk the campaigns of any national-level politician in prior years, but even perhaps ended their entire careers, yet which the twink from Chicago *seems* to be getting away with.

Increase energy prices.

I am no less astonished that this clown is a major party candidate today than I was six months ago. If he gets into the WH, we have truly entered a new universe, politically speaking. Not the country or electorate I thought I knew ….

I assumed that everyone understood this, since it is what we came so close to experiencing a month ago. I figured that even the Obamabots heard their own “financial messiah”, Buffett, say “G-d help us” if collapse came. I’m pretty sure a US Treasury Secretary has never before talked about being “500 trades from Armageddon” … Biblical references. I think that Obots fall into 3 main categories:

1) America Haters. This includes the revolutionaries, communists, marxists, along with the people who just hate America for whatever reason.

2) White-Guilters. For these people, who are emotional people, not given much to reason, BHO is the ultimate penitence, who will deliver the ultimate punishment that these guilters think they (and the rest of us) deserve.

3) Defeatists. These are the anti-competitive group. They hate competition and want others to just tell them what to do. They want the government to take over everything, though they don’t care about governing philosophies or anything of the sort. They just want to not have to think for themselves.

That’s what I see.

Business leaders have denounced the policy as a “tax”, threatening to take their investments elsewhere and move their more polluting activities out of Europe.
Faced with the threat of job losses, governments are feeling the pressure.

“This plan is garbage. It’s politically correct, but it won’t happen,” former Italian prime minister Giuliano Amato said at the end of August.
Renato Brunetta, Italy’s minister for innovation, has been equally blunt.
“If it happens, it would kill the economic upturn. No one needs to kill themselves,” said Brunetta, a trained economist.

Remember how important it is to all the liberals that we
are well liked across seas.Popularity trumps actual results
with the people that knell at the UN alter.France,Germany,Italy …right on down the line are rebuking the idiot measures of the liberals and their
“classroom foreign policy”.
The same people that call the Freeing of over 50 million people from the jihadist “a big mistake that costs to much”
need to look in the mirror instead of patting themselves on the back so much telling each other how “smart” they are:

Billions wasted on UN climate programme
Energy firms routinely abusing carbon offset fund, US studies claim

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/may/26/climatechange.greenpolitics

Billions of pounds are being wasted in paying industries in developing countries to reduce climate change emissions, according to two analyses of the UN’s carbon offsetting programme.
Leading academics and watchdog groups allege that the UN’s main offset fund is being routinely abused by chemical, wind, gas and hydro companies who are claiming emission reduction credits for projects that should not qualify. The result is that no genuine pollution cuts are being made, undermining assurances by the UK government and others that carbon markets are dramatically reducing greenhouse gases, the researchers say.

But I guess it is okay for liberals to waste billions of dollars on unproven technologies and theories pushed by activists, but to actually spend money on things like..well..you know…defeating extremist that kill tens of thousands of people and have started wars all over the world is “stupid foreign policy”.

Thanks for the responses. I still don’t understand what’s so great about Obama. Oh, maybe that’s because there isn’t anything great about him.

He may have trouble getting some members of his own party to support this crap. Some of them were certainly whistling a different tune this fall when galsoine prices started north of $4.00 a gallon.

Bring it on Big 0!
