Is Virginia in the bag for Obama?

posted at 12:15 pm on November 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Meryl Yourish says no — and in fact one of the state’s largest newspapers agrees.  The Richmond Times-Dispatch did its own polling in Virginia and got much different numbers than CNN and ABC over the last two weeks.  They call the race a dead heat, and winnable for McCain:

The presidential contest in Virginia is heading toward a photo finish.

The final Richmond Times-Dispatch Poll of the campaign shows Sen. Barack Obama at 47 percent and Sen. John McCain at 44 percent. Nine percent are undecided — an unusually large slice of the electorate. The profile of undecided voters suggests that some are potentially opposed to Obama.

Because Obama’s advantage over McCain is within the poll’s margin of error — plus or minus 4 percentage points — the contest in Virginia can be considered about even.

Meryl says she heard an even smaller figure:

And this is what I was told yesterday at the Cantor rally: McCain is within one and a half percent. Undecideds trend against the frontrunner. Virginia carried Bush in 2004 and in 2000. Virginia is still a red state. Don’t believe the hype.

If Obama has not yet gotten a majority, he may never get it.  Normally, undecideds break against the incumbent, but this race has no real incumbent.  Obama tried to make McCain the incumbent, but the election has really become a referendum on Obama, and he knows it.  Anyone still undecided at this point has not been able to convince themselves that Obama is ready for the presidency.

The percentage of undecideds has remained high right to the end — in some state polls, as high as 14%.  Obama hasn’t made the sale, and I suspect most of them will wind up breaking towards McCain as a result.  Virginia and Pennylvania will provide an especially interesting test of this theory.

That says it all. C’mon you HotAirHeads in VA and PA! Let’s make it happen. Talk to friends and family. Send out emails. Make phone calls. Link folks up with Ed’s articles. Get out that vote.

More interesting polling from Mason-Dixon (the one used by NBC)

Mac up in:
NC +3
Ohio +2

-5 in Colorado
-3 in Virginia

The race has tightened and the astroturf is wearing a little thin…

Mac seems relaxed and fired up…does he know something we don’t?

The higher the undecideds, the better I feel going into Tuesday. Even if you haven’t been paying attention, at all, there’s still been such an overhwelming Obama blitz that it could not have possibly missed anyone completely. If there are still undecided after all of that, they’re breaking for McCain.

How is MN looking for Coleman, Ed?

I think rural voters have decided this election matters to them more than any other and will turn out in unprecedented levels. They also tend to be much more wary of the press and pollsters.

According to a letter posted on Hillbuzz that Rush spoke about on Thurs and Friday indicates the Obama campaign has paid pollsters to up the averages. If you check you will see that is exactly what is happening.

Yep I think that is a fairly accurate summation of the situation. This is borne out by the fact that the number of undecided voters actually increased after the third debate with most of the undecideds coming from the Obama column.

Personally I think undecideds will end up making a comparison of the candidates based on experience and record and if that happens Obama will come up short in a big way causing them to break for McCain.

Jim Geraghty said something that turnout is much higher in the Red areas of S. Carolina and TX. And neither of those are toss up states. I really do think the base is going to turn out big this year, and they’re not even remotely paying attention to the MSM. One thing is for sure, we are going to know the fate of this election pretty early on Tuesday night. If Mac holds most of the Red tossups and wins PA, then it’s over.

There’s one point about the so-called “Bradley Effect” that hasn’t been made:

Tom Bradley was the most corrupt, do-nothing mayor Los Angeles has had in modern times. Like Osama Obama, his rise was fueled only by his skin color.

When he ran for governor, many of his improper and at least potentially illegal shenanigans had been exposed by a press that, in those days, still felt it had to cover genuine news even if it didn’t boost their chosen candidate.

So the “Bradley Effect” in good old liberal California was essentially a rejection of a crooked opportunist.

The liberals who have “studied” the effect cannot bring themselves to admit that a black candidate can be as devious, corrupt and unqualified as a white opponent.

We’re seeing a replay in 2008.

Right_of_Attila on November 2, 2008 at 12:36 PM

Undecided voters are only struggling with one issue and thats Race. Most are traditional democrats to whom Obamas record, lack of experience, and current positions are far to liberal. They are drawn to voting for the first black president but just can’t close the deal, most will decide in the booth and they’ll vote for McCain.

Enoxo on November 2, 2008 at 12:51 PM

Maybe the Republican voter suppression efforts are a gift. The Obama people are convinced of victory and gloating complacently. If we’re lucky, some Obamabots will not bother to vote because it’s already “in the bag”.

Side note – I live in the liberal bastion of Austin, TX and I have been astounded at the lack of Obama signs compared to the blanketing of the city with Gore and Kerry signs during those two elections. Yards are heavy with signs for down race Dems and local Dems but relatively few for Obama. Even the far-lefty wacko home in our neighborhood near the middle school that usually has a line of homemade signs about the evil Republicans/Bushitler wrapped around their property during election seasons (last election the signs were so obnoxious that they were asked by the school to tone it down due to parent complaints) has had only one official campaign Obama sign this election. I have no idea what the difference signifies but it’s undeniable.

On the flip side, I haven’t seen many McCain signs, either. Interestingly, we have bumper stickers on both our cars and I have been approached twice by people who said they wished they were brave enough to put McCain stickers on their cars.

Put those two things together and they add up to “something’s up” but what that something means is anybody’s guess.

Anyone undecided at this point hasn’t been paying attention, and is just going to vote on the basis of some vague emotion or impression from television. These are the people who have only the vaguest notion of how our government works, who the Vice President is, how many Senators there are, etc. They vote because they know they are ‘supposed to’.

These people are exactly the reason why mass democracy was eschewed by the Founding Fathers.

As I recall, the ‘undecideds’ in past elections have tended to split pretty much as the ‘decideds’ did. So if Obambi is in fact as far ahead in the state polls as he seems to be—beyond the margin of error in some cases—then the odds of a wave of undecideds washing McCain in are small to non-existent.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but that’s the way it looks from here.

Then, I live in Massachusetts, which hasn’t voted for a Republican since Ronald Reagan ran against Walter Mondull in 1984.

Where do they find these people to poll? Seriously. I live inside the beltway and have never once been asked or seen anyone asking.
In Alexandria there have been more 0bama signs and stickers, but lately I’ve been seeing quite a number of McCain signs and stickers popping up too. I can tell you that the tacky, unwelcome neuvo yuppies in Loudoun are just angering the people who’ve lived there for years. The new development there has brought a host of dummycrats who are doing whatever they can to make Loudoun into whatever ghetto they came from. They’ve already tried to impose rules on what the local churches can do, restrict how many horses a person can have, and they’ve run carpetbagger candidates to try to beat Frank Wolf, whom everyone loves out there and who has represented Loudoun for a very long time. It makes me sad that Va will soon be a big old ghetto, just like DC. I feel like I have to move back and try to stop it, (via volunteering and voting). They’ve already smeared George Allen out of office.

While most of these have been phone messages, I have noted that more than 75% of the people with whom I have spoken have expressed support for McCain. Some have been reluctant (indeed, I think I may in my small part have helped to put a little tail-wind behind McCain in the minds of a couple of the “leaners” I got on the phone). I heartily recommend that any and anon who may be reading this in PA, or any of the other key states find some time to hit the phones and politely, respectfully, and positively remind people of the caliber of this candidate, and of the stakes we face.

Here in northern Virginia, I’d say there are more Obama signs than those for McCain. A drive through the rural areas, however, reveals that they are heavily laden with McCain signs. I did notice that the Obama signs are sometimes huge, so maybe size does matter. One of the funniest is the big Obama/Biden sign that says, “For Lower Taxes.” If you believe that the two of the most liberal politicians in the Senate are really for lower taxes, you might believe the rapist who says he’s really a sex therapist.

dinobalz on November 2, 2008 at 1:14 PM

As you probably know, the base of the Democratic party, especially the poor and uneducated, are less likely to vote than most Americans. The Democrats put a lot of emphasis on registration and getting out the vote for that reason. That’s why you see Hollywood celebrities trying to get kids to vote, posing as if they’re doing something civic minded. All they’re doing is trying to get the Democrat constituency to the polls. This year, they have an advantage. With early voting, they have much more time to drag their constituency to the voting station. That’s probably why the early voting is heavily in favor of Obama.

However, there are likely more than enough McCain supporters to offset the Democratic voting drive, but only if McCain supporters actually vote. Remember, it’s not what the polls say. It’s not who is the majority party. It’s how many people actually go vote. So, if it seems that the race is over, it isn’t. All it takes to win is a heavy turnout by McCain supporters. That’s why we need to vote.

Or Jerri Thompson. I still chuckle when I think of her giving Skeletor that verbal pimp-slap.

The crack about Democrats having a foot fetish was classic.

FWIW: my VA sister’s anecdodal observation:

“On the way to Charlottesville for [her son's] end of the season crew race, I saw very few Obama posters/signs. The real Virginians are for McCain; it’s No. VA that’s more liberal. Come Tuesday, I think VA will go for McCain.”

BuckeyeSam on November 2, 2008 at 1:17 PM

Richmond is my home town… God I hope VA doesn’t go for O. Almost all my family is there and will be voting for McCain. I do have a brother who has fully partaken of the Obama kool-aid. It breaks my heart that my big bro fell for this guy.

I already voted for McCain in VA! that’s one we got!

http://www.results.org/website/article.asp?id=2897 Hope this is cool to post this? If not I apologize in advance. It has to do with the Global Poverty Act. Doesn’t sound to good though. Might not understand it though. tired and sick today.

I got a email from my brother about the Global Poverty Act being passed in 2007? I am kind of sick today and my eyes hurt to read a lot. I put the link in here. But assuming that is not allowed since it didn’t go through? Any way can anyone enlighten me since my brain is very blond today?

Senate sponsors are all Dems and RINOs. You can assume that President Obambi will be eager to sign it.

The Wright ad is runnin in Iowa and the rags all have Iowa +15 to 25 for 0B0mber!
We may not win here W. lost by like 5000 but we will not loose by 15-25 and team Mccain must know it, also 0B0mber was in Des Moines friday a state hes’ up by 15 in. I think not, we get all of the new ads and I know lots of Dems or non-political types voting R for the first time this year.
Go SARAH!

Its amazing how any Red State could go blue after all the crap liberals have said about them for the last 8 years.

The media are submerged in the tank for Obama. Don’t listen to any polls with a margin greater than 2% – because that’s what it really is without even considering the Bradley Effect and the votes of the “undecideds.”

McCain will win this and win it handily. But you have to do your part. Get out the vote!

ManlyRash on November 2, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Mr. Lynn:

I am perfectly aware of what the polls say. I know what the talking heads say. I stopped watching cable news more than an hour so a day because they just kept saying we are gonna lose over and over again.

I am voting for John McCain anyway. I am voting for Goode, the Republican running against the blue dog Democrat in the 8th district in Indiana. Both are supposed to be lost causes, but I am voting for them anyway. I figure I will wait and see what happens, either way it will not change my vote.

Terrye on November 2, 2008 at 1:00 PM

You vote for Goode, I’ll vote for Goodlatte, and we’ll both vote for Gilmore and McCain. We’ll both do our part!

I’ve mentioned this on this site before, but I’ll post it again: I live in a HEAVILY liberal district in NoVa (the district, shamefully, that keeps re-electing that anti-semitic fool Jim Moran), and yet I’ve been stunned at the number of McCain signs I’ve seen. Not on street corners or public property, in people’s yards, proudly displayed. More, I’d argue, than I saw Bush signs in 04. Full disclosure: Obama signs outnumber the McCains signs, no doubt about that. But still, the number of McCain signs I’ve seen has surprised me.

This is purely anecdotal, I know. I only bring it up, again, because it’s relevant to the topic at hand – Virginia may be a state that goes McCain, despite what the press would have us believe. Outside of Richmond, the only stronghold for liberals in VA is Northern VA, and if there’s a not-inconsequential number of McCain supporters even there (whether they’re admitting their support or just keeping quite about it), Barack maybe shouldn’t be counting on a VA win.

Vyce on November 2, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Just spent several hours phoning for McCain/Palin at a local VA office ….. place was packed. Phones maxed out.

Remember, you can make phone calls yourselves to a BATTLEGROUND state even if you’re not in one:

http://www.JohnMcCain.com then click on the Make Calls button.

People keep stealing my McCain signs but I’ve got more in the van to replace them with…. :)

Let’s roll!

ex-Democrat on November 2, 2008 at 2:33 PM

Is Virginia in the bag for Obama?

I have to agree with Meryl it is not in the bag for Obama yet.

The Commonwealth should go for McCain except in a few key liberal areas like Fairfax County, Richmond, Charlottesville (V-Tech) etc.

McCain should take the rural areas as previous elections.

IMO it is going to come down to the counties that are on the outskirts of Fairfax like Prince William and Loudon.

F15Mech on November 2, 2008 at 2:43 PM

Going back to Bob Dole v. Bill Clinton, the final VA polls have underestimated GOP votes by a 6%-8% margin. Clinton was supposed to win in 1996 by 4 points, but lost to Dole in the state by that margin. I foresee the same outcome this year.

Physics Geek on November 2, 2008 at 2:45 PM

BTW, forgot to mention, I’m going to be doing my part and voting for McCain on Tuesday.

My parents already early-voted – also for McCain. My father hates Obama with a burning passion…..he refers to him as a communist. Only with a few expletives added as adjectives.

Vyce on November 2, 2008 at 2:51 PM

Ohio is in the bag for McCain (I know, I’m here).

I’m here too, and you’re wrong, my friend.

I drove from Manassas to Leesburg this afternoon via Rt. 234 and Rt. 15. I counted all impressions almost the whole way there including bumper stickers, yard signs and the huge 4x8s. The count ended up being 44 to 13 for…..

McCain-Palin!

PS I saw two of the 4×8 Obama-Biden “Lower Taxes” signs on Rt. 15 near Oatlands, I almost spit-out my coffee.
