IBD/TIPP: Obama +2, under 50%

posted at 4:44 pm on November 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

TIPP got the 2004 almost exactly correct, and now they’re showing a much closer national race than almost every other pollster.  They now have Barack Obama ahead of John McCain by only 2, 46.7% to 44.6%.  Outlier?  Prophets?  We’ll see on Tuesday, but if they’re right, two points in particular have to be worrying Team Obama:

The race tightened again Sunday as independents who’d been leaning to Obama shifted to McCain to leave that key group a toss-up. McCain also pulled even in the Midwest, moved back into the lead with men, padded his gains among Protestants and Catholics, and is favored for the first time by high school graduates.

The internals are interesting, but the topline results show two potentially disturbing trends for Obama.  First, Obama has never gotten to 50% in the TIPP poll, and now has dropped below 47%.  A Democrat hasn’t won 50% of the vote in decades, and Obama may have the same problem John Kerry had in 2004.  Related to that is the high level of undecideds.  Almost 9% still have not made up their minds about the election, and as I wrote earlier today, that bodes ill for Obama.  If he hasn’t made the sale with this group by now, it’s likely that most of them will wind up in McCain’s column on Tuesday.

How do we know this?  Independents have begun to break for McCain. McCain now leads 45-43.  A week ago, Obama led 43-38 with 19% undecided.  The entire 7% that has come out of the undecided column in that period have gone to McCain, and 12% of them still have to make up their minds.  Interestingly, slightly more Democrats than Republicans are undecided — not good news for Obama.

If TIPP is right — and at the moment, they’re occupying a lonely spot among national pollsters — then it calls into question the notion that Obama is leading in all of the battleground states.  We’ll see who was right on Tuesday.

You are a fantastic addition to America, Fortunata. I live in an area with many Germans and some English. The Germans train with our soldiers. Imagine that.
The Germans here LOVE America. I have never heard any of them badmouth our country. They love the weather and the freedoms that America offers.
The English also love it here. They are concerned for their country’s future and the scourge of Islamic fundamentalists that is creeping in.
Everyone has a different angle on things. I hope the world understands that we cannot elect a socialist, no matter what color he is.

I live in western PA and i just got polled. The poll was ridiculous and completely confusing. They asked me, yes or no, whether i was voting for McCain or Obama. I answered yes, because i was voting for one of the two. They then asked me a series of extremely skewed policy questions, extremely skewed towards giving democrat-friendly answers.

My thought after answering the poll was that the policy questions would determine who they think you are voting for. The first question was a setup to narrow the choices to Obama and McCain. Very clever… I wouldn’t put any validity to those polls right now. It’s all a stunt.

Fortunata, I’ve never really understood how the rest of the world can see America the way it does. Do we really seem that one-dimensional and naive? Maybe it’s just me.

Also, thanks for the great link. I love Britslang: snog, berk, telly, cuppa, etc. “Bloody” is such a satisfying swearword for me: fairly harmless-sounding here in America, but I know it’s a serious swearword elsewhere! (btw, is it still, Fortunata? I sometimes wonder if that’s changed what with the ubiquitous F-word taking precedence)

To take your mind off things when the suspense gets to be too much, how about a great British/U.K. comic movie? I heartily recommend:
Waking Ned Devine
Cold Comfort Farm
The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain
Babe & Babe: Pig in the City
Secrets & Lies (the comedy mostly happens later in the film)
The Full Monty
Much Ado About Nothing (the Branagh & Thompson one)

BuckeyeSam on November 2, 2008 at 8:46 PM

I consider myself a Republican but I think we can learn a lot from libertarians.

I used to be the biggest anti-any kind of drug person you could find; death penalty for repeat offenders and all that. I’ve never smoked weed but started to meet people who did occasionally and all of them were smart, hard working, and some were crazy successful in life. I started thinking more about the whole libertarian argument for legalisation and realised if I don’t know someone is smoking dope and they are productive, why should I care? That altered my view on legalisation of marijuana and possibly other minor drugs (but nothing like heroin or cocaine).

It’s not a good idea to break the law, especially considering the consequences if you’re caught, but I certainly have come around a great deal to the libertarian point of view. I know some drugs (like opium) are grown and used to fund terrorism and that is NOT good, but that’s not what I’m saying. Pot is the most widely used drug and if the US legalised it, you wouldn’t have Mexican drug smugglers and the mob with their fingers in the marijuana trade because people could get good quality LEGAL stuff easily and cheaply. The mobs not in the moonshine business any more, are they? Just things I think about…

I’m not trying to convince anyone to think this way, I just wanted to stick up for libertarians. The exercise about drugs made me think a great deal about why we have laws, what we’re trying to do with them and which ones are vital (like protecting life and liberty).

P.S. Dog’s bollocks is a favourite phrase!

The Fry-Laurie Jeeves is outstanding! That was my introduction to Wodehouse and what I recommend to others. (A good episode to start people on is “Jeeves Saves the Cow Creamer.”) The books are fantastic too (obviously less visual, more verbal). They’re fairly cheap and easy to get hold of, but I highly recommend the recordings by Johnathan Cecil (pronounced Sissel). His intonation is perfect: I mean, laugh out loud when there’s nobody else there! He does “Jeeves” stories, but also “non-Jeeves” ones, which are also fantastic. Just got back from Sunday night Mass, and the priest dedicated his homily to abortion. On the Feast of All Souls, he reminded us of the 40 million plus souls that have been lost to abortion. He said that no issue has the magnitude of this one, and that we must think hard about the the Declaration of Independence. And while issues about the economy, healthcare, environment, etc are very important, if this nation cannot protect the unborn, and provide them with their inalienable rights, all other issues are meaningless.

He never explicitly endorse–but he didn’t need to. It was a good homily by an old-school parish priest. It was a proud Catholic moment.

Yes there is a new one on the sci fi channel but if you loved the first one, the new one is so disappointing. Sometimes they need to just run the old shows, and not try to improve on them. When I was a kid, I used to love to watch the old “Bowery Boys Movies” they were before my time but I loved to watch them. I can’t imagine someone redoing the Bowery Boys.

Michigan Police Officer’s Take on Obama
The most interesting things arrive with the morning mail.

To all,
I have read all of the emails from not only some of the [Michigan Tactical Officer’s Association] board members, but from other Law Enforcement & Military personnel about Barack Obama’s rudeness and what seems to be disgust for basically anyone in uniform. Well, it’s my turn to add to the list of emailers and here it is:
So members of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police, (me included) and other local agencies inside Calhoun County are working with Secret Service in the security of Mr. Obama. Mr. Obama’s bus arrives in Battle Creek and pulls into the stadium area. Before Mr. Obama exits the bus, he has the Secret Service get off and tell all Law Enforcement personnel in uniform that they now have to stand behind the bus so Mr. Obama is not seen with anyone in a Law Enforcement uniform before he gets off or while in the public view. So, everyone from Michigan State Police, Sheriff’s Deptments and other agencies look at each other for a brief second, go and stand behind the bus out of sight so Mr. Obama does not have to see, or been seen with, what to him is ‘undesirables’ since he refuses to been seen or even acknowledge Military or Law Enforcement personnel in uniform. And he wants to be our commander-in-chief!
At a time of war and terrorism in our world, this presidental candidate who is being protected by various branches of the military & law enforcement at the tax payers expense, refuses to acknowledge, be seen with, have in his photographed background, any type of Military or Law Enforcement in uniform.
But this is not in the headlines or in the news or on TV. The TV news doesn’t show us marching around behind the bus. In the future, look and see if you can see a single soldier or police officer in uniform when you see Obama. Why? I wonder what the story or media frenzy would be if it was Muslims, blacks, whites, Jews, or any other race, gender, religon, and/or occupation, that Mr. Obama refused to be seen with or have around him.
Why would I make this up? Everyone in Law Enforcement knows we have traditionally had more funding under Democrats.
Just food for thought leading up to November 4th.

When I was a kid, I used to love to watch the old “Bowery Boys Movies” they were before my time but I loved to watch them. I can’t imagine someone redoing the Bowery Boys.

Dr Evil on November 2, 2008 at 9:32 PM

We must be similar ages. I watched them as a young kid too. Tks for reminding me of them. I had forgotten. They were before my time too, but I could identify with one part–kids could still roam relatively freely without too much fear, and I did. Today, I keep my young daughters in a large and comfortable cocoon, but I am aware of the price they are paying.

I think the sanctity of the Declaration reached its zenith in the sorrow of the Civil War…

The rest of the world is convinced that America is a deeply racist society that still has to wash away the sin of slavery.

This is the dumbest sentiment ever. Slavery in America was done with well over a hundred years ago. And where did we get the idea for slavery in the first place? Hmmmmm? It wasn’t exactly invented in North America. Also, when we got rid of slavery we spilled the blood of over 600,000 Americans to get it done. America has done more in terms of pushing racial, gender, ethnic, etc. equality than any other nation in the world. We give more money to other nations, we provide more relief when disasters occur, and we have higher rates of individual charitable giving than any other nation.

So if Europe or anyone else thinks we are racist that’s just too bad for them. If they want to put their own ignorance on display that way, fine. If they weren’t so gullible, believing every little morstle the BBC and other leftwing rags feed them, they’d actually be doing something productive in the world themselves.

Frankly, I’m getting tired of Europe and all their holier than thou crap. Maybe if they need protection from enemies with missile shields and whatnot, they can start doing it themselves. We ought to just pull out and tell them to deal with Russia and any other potential threats on their own.

Peace. Out.

You’re right, and I’ve often argued that Americans are the only people ever to have fought a war over the issue of slavery. Unfortunately, anti-American talking points are often taken from your own media, various intellectualloids, and the “scholarship” coming out of various liberal arts faculties in your own colleges. As for ignorance about real, ordinary Americans, one thing that makes my head spin is that some Europeans think that Michael Moore is a redneck.

About those polls, this was in my email box, from my best friend who just had knee replacement surgery….The Polling being done how many of the answers they get, are to get the Poll takers to leave them alone?

I have the cordless phone now, although *** is keeping it out in the kitchen. The phone rings constantly with one campaign or the other, I keep hearing *** say, ‘don’t call here again.’ So instead of letting them wake me up, he is still screening for me.

…don’t worry about gettin’ your hopes up, only to have them dashed in the early, eye-peepin’ hours of 5 November…keep prayin’, workin’ and movin’ ’til it’s all over…then, not when the polsters and pundits say so, it’ll be over.

…it’s up to this: people have a choice…it’s the safe choice over the hopeful choice…the wise choice over the emotional choice…the thought-out choice over the feel-good choice…the former bein’ John McCain, the latter Mr. Obama.

…and I’d bet that’s how folks are seein’ it: do I wanna take a risk on Obama…especially with what’s come out over just the last few days….

…the “top-level” of the middle class is slipping to level of countin’ pocket change…key sectors of the energy industry are not only off the table, but in the crosshairs…arrogance has abounded in the face of a good-humored, self-effacing appearance on a tired old prehistoric comedy show…and the more we come to know of Mr. Obama, the less he looks like someone we can trust.

…we’ll see….

…for my part, Mr. Obama looks like the choice an airheaded high-school cheerleader’d make…’cause he’s so groovy…and she don’t know why…Washington needs adult supervision, and a rock star isn’t the guy to do it…Clinton shoulda taught us that….

…but, then, Texas has early voting, and I’ve already made my stand. Y’all get out and vote and get out the vote, and don’t hope for the best…work for he best.

See ya Wednesday….

I’ve often argued that Americans are the only people ever to have fought a war over the issue of slavery.

…hmmm…Spartacus and his folks were people…and the guys in Haiti were people, too….

…England actually did more to end not only the institution of slavery, but the trans-Atlantic trade in slaves than America ever did…and almost 30 years before America did…and without all the fuss and bother….

…in fact, the efforts of England were pointed to as an example of how to end slavery while compensating the owners of slaves, who often had more money tied up in slaves than in land, livestock, buildings and implements combined.

…but, then, many abolitionists — north and south — were fairly unstable, emotional people (as were many pro-slavery fire-eaters), and it’s the American way to go to the brink…and then trip over it. Our ancestors had a path blazed before them, but had to have it their own bloody way.

…then, to add insult to injury, many of the same folks who wanted to wound slavery and slaveholders to death made sure — with willing and welcome help from moronic former slaveholders — that as screwed as blacks were as slaves, they would be doubly screwed, and for a hundred years, by the way the nation was reconstructed after the War you mention.

…we may have fought a war to end slavery, but nothing about the issue stands up to much scrutiny as far as nobility is concerned…on either side of the issue….

…one thing that makes my head spin is that some Europeans think that Michael Moore is a redneck.

Fortunata on November 2, 2008 at 10:06 PM

He probably meant a CIVIL war, Puritan. Spartacus led a slave revolt ( one of many in Rome ) and Haiti could be tagged a ‘war of independence’ not unlike ours, except that most of the ‘insurgents’ were slaves or former slaves. Slave uprisings in the Caribbean were not uncommon.

History and morality don’t often mix well: In order for a nation to fight a civil war over slavery, it must have had slavery as an institution.

The larger point was that of ‘white guilt’ as the basis of a current voting decision, and unfortunately there are more than a few White Folks who will vote for BHO to redeem themselves–and some think they can redeem their White Brethern

…it’s just that “fighting to free the slaves” is an old chesnut used to show the United States as a fundamentally noble place….

…using that justification, it’s saying that half of the nation geographically, and two thirds of it demographically, could be called “noble”, while the other guys livin’ here were rat bastards….

…it doesn’t hold up.

…slavery could have been ended in a much more adult manner, as in Britain…but the folks at the time were too head-up to do the right thing…each side was too head-up to win the argument…pure and simple….

…it screwed the black man…it screwed the 600K of fatalities, most of whom didn’t even have a dog in the fight….

…and we’ve been gettin’ lied to about it ever since.

…try to have a reasoned discussion about race in this country. The well’s poisoned, as we both know…and we can thank the Lloyd Garrisons, Wendell Phillips’, Frederick Douglass’ and Harriet Beecher Bloody-Handed Stowes as much as we can the Quitmans, Yanceys, Hammond and Calhoun.

…and their ideological idiot children are with us today…you yourself refer to them here:

The larger point was that of ‘white guilt’ as the basis of a current voting decision, and unfortunately there are more than a few White Folks who will vote for BHO to redeem themselves….

…I need redeeming, but no man walking the earth today can do it…and it doesn’t have anything to do with a slavery I would never support, or an anti-slavery effort I’d p*ss on as readily….

I’m not guilty, and I’d assume all posting her today/tonight are as guiltless, of suporting or benefitting from slavery…the profits to be had from that institution have long ago been gathered up and spent…and, as innocent as we are of the institution, the great-grandchildren of those held as slaves understand that…and, if not, need to crack a book and learn….

America is a noble place…and our foul history of slavery, on all sides, has nothing to do with it….

There have been so many dehumanizing lies told on the subject that it’s an achievement to discover anyone telling the truth…it’s like finding a pearl in the bottom of an outhouse….

…nobody today tells the truth on the subject…for the last fifty years folks have made good livings lying about American history…that’s for sure.

It’s not my subject area, but don’t you think that it would have been more difficult for the British to pass resolutions about slavery if the institution existed *on their own island*, rather than far off colonies? And I don’t mean the occasional house-slave, who was treated no differently from a footman. The French, too, abolished slavery at their Revolution, only to re-institute it, in places like Haiti. Far, far, more cruel, in my view. It was never a straight line, with guaranteed outcomes and victories. And, of course, our friends the Arabs are still at it, in places like Sudan and elsewhere.

It was the formation of the US Constitution that marked the beginning of the end of the slave trade in America. For all intents and purposes, it was an Old World institution. In the context of epochs of history, as America shook off her European identity, she discovered her vision of liberty and righteousness.

Fact is that you posted a story as if it was true that was a BLATANT LIE. Literally FIVE SECONDS of research could have told you that, but you decided to be a little sheep and believe whatever you want to believe.

At the end of the day, one politician is only more sympathetic to us than the other. We have to keep an eye on all of them.

Puritan1648 on November 2, 2008 at 11:05 PM

Unfortunately, many still believe the War Between the States was just about slavery. Slavery was only one of the issues. The old South had become almost a different country. Where the north’s economy was based on manufacturing and sea trade, the south’s was based on King Cotton. The north wanted high tariffs on imported goods, to encourage people to buy goods produced by their own manufacturers; the south wanted low tariffs to have lower prices. It’s too long to go into, but virtually every thing the south wanted in national policy was contrary to the interests of the north. And as the north grew in population, the south’s interests suffered. This caused tremendous frustration in the south, who felt almost like they were colonies of the north, with laws passed for the north’s benefit at the south’s expense.

Slavery was the tinderbox issue that sparked the conflict, but it was not the principal cause of the conflict in the minds of most people.

So I don’t think it’s a surprise that the US didn’t solve the slavery issues peaceably. The differences that led to the War Between the States were a stew of disputes and disagreements over a couple of generations. If slavery had been the only issue, it probably could have been resolved peaceably, if not painlessly. Some sort of sharecropping system might have replaced the slavery. The black sharecroppers would have been just a few steps above slaves at first, but having the freedom to move to another state or sharecrop for another farmer would have eventually lead to greater prosperity and a healthier economy throughout the south for black and white alike.

But the differences were so much deeper that I doubt slavery could have ever been solved separately from those issues.

None of which changes the fact that a great number of people were very exercised about the evils of slavery, and took a lot of steps to fight against it.
