IBD/TIPP: Obama +2, under 50%
posted at 4:44 pm on November 2, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
TIPP got the 2004 almost exactly correct, and now they’re showing a much closer national race than almost every other pollster. They now have Barack Obama ahead of John McCain by only 2, 46.7% to 44.6%. Outlier? Prophets? We’ll see on Tuesday, but if they’re right, two points in particular have to be worrying Team Obama:
The race tightened again Sunday as independents who’d been leaning to Obama shifted to McCain to leave that key group a toss-up. McCain also pulled even in the Midwest, moved back into the lead with men, padded his gains among Protestants and Catholics, and is favored for the first time by high school graduates.
The internals are interesting, but the topline results show two potentially disturbing trends for Obama. First, Obama has never gotten to 50% in the TIPP poll, and now has dropped below 47%. A Democrat hasn’t won 50% of the vote in decades, and Obama may have the same problem John Kerry had in 2004. Related to that is the high level of undecideds. Almost 9% still have not made up their minds about the election, and as I wrote earlier today, that bodes ill for Obama. If he hasn’t made the sale with this group by now, it’s likely that most of them will wind up in McCain’s column on Tuesday.
How do we know this? Independents have begun to break for McCain. McCain now leads 45-43. A week ago, Obama led 43-38 with 19% undecided. The entire 7% that has come out of the undecided column in that period have gone to McCain, and 12% of them still have to make up their minds. Interestingly, slightly more Democrats than Republicans are undecided — not good news for Obama.
If TIPP is right — and at the moment, they’re occupying a lonely spot among national pollsters — then it calls into question the notion that Obama is leading in all of the battleground states. We’ll see who was right on Tuesday.

I wonder about what makes up a non-decided voter. They just aren’t sure and just about anything would push them over one side of the fence or the other.
Now that same kind of person steps into the (still) private place of a voting booth. Would that kind of person play it safe with a candidate who has been a household word for decades and whose record is well known, or that other guy who they know so little about.
Do you all think that such a person is more likely to play it safe? – or am I just being unrealistically optimistic?

The PUMAs have been screaming that Barry HO has to have at least a +10 lead in the polls to be actually even to account for the skewing.
And Morris has been saying that if Barry HO goes under 50% its all over for him.
It may be crap, but if the coal and gas price thing can break out onto FOX Monday, it may help presuade a few leaners to get on the McCain bandwagon.

So, if these guys are spot on again, we still lose by 2 points? I’m so happy I could cry.
Bottom line is that even IBD/TIPP, though more accurate than the others, is still not on the money.
Fox News just reported that Pew shows McCain by 1 point among likely voters (down 5 among all registered). The pollsters are trying to move to the number they really believe, without all the MSM hype, at the last minute when the GOP vote suppression has already taken hold and there is still time to salvage their reputations. “Hey, look, we got it right at the very end–we’re geniuses!”

McCain will win with a healthy margin.
I think this Obama thing has been all from the top down. It has not been a grassroots effort. It has been manufactured from the media and from groups like ACORN. ACORN gives the Obama campaign an appearance of a grassroots swell. That is a false appearance.
And as for the minority vote,, blacks have always voted with the Democrat.
Any wow factor with Obama has to be equally muted by the very real fear factor.

I’d guess they’re dems used to having voting be simple and convenient–vote straight Dem. But this time, something, any number of things is nagging, and voting Republican, being something they never did before, will be a new and scary sensation. They’re going against what they perceive as their type and their group by crossing that line, and that can’t be comfortable. But somehow Obama just scares some part of them too much to pull the lever for him.
I wonder if some of the undecided will decide to stay home.

I just watched Raymond Arroyo, otherwise known as the part-time writer for NRO and host of “The World Over” on the Catholic channel EWTN.
They talked about the life issue which is so vital to Catholics, not the cafeteria Catholics.
A priest who is often advertised on the Drudge Report was adamant that Catholics must vote for pro-life candidates AKA John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Hopefully enough Catholics get the picture, and vote for life, not for death and socialism.

I don’t know gang- this is a wierd election. As we were driving around KC today, we took notice of signs in yards, stickers on cars, what have you. I saw low-middle income homes with Mccain signs in the yard and VERY small businesses with Obama signs in the window! A lot of high end cars with Obama stickers, a lot of pick ups with Mccain/Palin ones. In my own neighborhood, I’ve noticed that most of the ethnic, (asian, middle eastern) have Obama signs, and the corporate people tell me they’re for McCain but wouldn’t put a sign out for fear of vandalism- same for their cars. I’ve also asked people ad nauseum if they’ve been “polled” this year, and haven’t had a single “yes”.
People seem to have very odd reasons for their vote this year-

My .02 on why Obama hasn’t closed. We just don’t know the guy.
The media doesn’t care to look much beyond the two autobiographies he has written. He didn’t release his college transcript or his medical records. He has relatives popping up all over the world and he appears to give different, more substantive speeches to big money donors than he does to the public at large. We learn his mom was Bristol Palin’s age when she had him and his Kenyan father was married to two other women at the time he married her. Somewhere Mitt Romney just answered a question about Mormons and polygamy. ; )
Stanley Kurtz, David Freddoso, and Jerome Corsi have all been effectively silenced for having the audacity to peek behind the curtain. Like Obama’s response to his relationship with Bill Ayers, if its no big deal why are you so upset about people looking into it? Why did you mischaracterize your relationship? If it is just a Republican thing, why did Hillary raise the same questions?
Bottom line, folks are undecided because Barak Obama only spent 143 days in the Senate before he announce his campaign for the Presidency. People have not been given enough information on him beyond the HopeyChange one note symphony he reads off the teleprompter at his public rallies.
Angry Dumbo on November 2, 2008 at 5:18 PM

TIPP shows Senator Obama up by 2.1% with 8.7% undecided.

From wikipedia:
27 states produce coal. The major coal-producing states are (in descending order as of 2000, with annual production in thousands of short tons):
Wyoming (338,900).
West Virginia (158,257)
Kentucky (130,688)
Pennsylvania (74,619)
Texas (49,498)

New Mexico (27,323)
Utah (26,656)
Ohio (22,269)
Alabama (19,324)

Terrye on November 2, 2008 at 5:21 PM
I’m inclined to think this poll is closer to reality than the other. However, I still think Obama wins. My guess is a really close popular vote with Obama failing to break 50% but picking up enough electoral votes in Colorado, Iowa, and perhaps New Mexico to pick up the win. It seem very unlikely Obama will win Florida or Ohio and calls into question polls that show him easily winning those states. I’m also skeptical of Obama winning Virginia.
Personally, I’m more worried about the Senate. McCain isn’t particularly conservative and no one is going to be able to find an easy way out of this economic mess. Better to hang on to enough Senate seats to block any truly egregious and target the 2010 Congressional elections. I’d rather not be stuck with a faltering economy AND McCain’s populist “conservatism” when the next round of elections come around.

I wish the GOP had gotten the word out about that Obama videotape on coal (how he’ll bankrupt anyone who tries to build a new coal mine, etc.) earlier. This is the kind of thing that can put a lot of those “undecided” voters (especially those in SW Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, WV, and Pennsylvania) into the McCain column.
The Dims are working overtime here in AZ. I’ve had 5 calls from them this weekend, and even had some come to my door yesterday.
Note to AZ voters: Watch out for Proposition 202. It is being pushed by a pro-illegal immigration group that is trying to gut AZ’s existing employer sanctions law. The proposition is deceptively worded to try and make voters think it’s imposing tougher sanctions on employers, but it is not — it will actually weaken them. Don’t be fooled. Vote NO on Prop 202 (and keep AZ’s existing laws in place).

The ONLY way McCain loses this race is if the media, operating as a full-fledged wing of the Obama campaign, breeds enough Eeyores amongst you to keep enough people home for Obama to squeak out wins. Hillary Clinton should have won Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana, by larger margins that she did. Ohio should have been a 13-point win, Pennsylvania should have been a 12-point win, and Indiana should have been a 9-point win. Eeyores staying home, saying, “Oh bother, TV say me stay home, me sad, need dydee changed!” is what cost Hillary those extra points.

A rumor based on a newscrawl item based on one interesting Pew internal, that McCain led by 1 among those who have not yet voted. With relatively high early voting and extra high participation from African Americans – who for some reason are more enthusiastic than usual this time around, can’t figure out why – that would still likely work out to a McCain loss.
But Pew sucks anyway so don’t worry. Basically just CYA and re-joining the pack after two consecutive extreme outlier weeks.
More important: the GWU Battleground poll, which doesn’t poll weekends partly because weekends are thought unfavorable to Rs and more difficult to poll, had it 47-44-9 nationally and 47-46-7 in the battleground states on Fri.
If McCain is closing with momentum (on his own via GOTV or with the help of the Wright ads and latest Obama coal tape, for instance) and winning undecideds by a decent margin, these are already ELECTION-WINNING polls, even before you figure in any Bradley or systematic urban-favorable polling errors.
On the other hand, IBD/TIPP and BG (bipartisan firm of veteran pollsters) could be the outliers, and the landsliders could be accurate… I guess. That’s what all the media, the pundits, and Democrats (want to) believe.
Won’t matter to us if Republicans, Pumas, and conservative Indies and Dems don’t turn out big time. Don’t you want to see Chris Matthews and Peggy Noonan weeping in each other’s arms???? Of course you do! Make it happen!

It’s weird but in a way logical. Dick Morris explained it very well. It’s “Joe the plummer” that put it for the people to understand Obama’s tax hike plan, Obama’s accusation of “selfisness” for the people that are not eager to giver their money in excess to the state, the new Civil Force, the new pastor Wright ad that runs evan here in California, the illegal auntie that gave him campaign money and he doesen’t want to know about her and now is the coal thing. Of course he is loosing votes. Is this enough to put McCain in the White Hose? I don’t know. But I quote Manly “pray and vote, pray and vote”.

I can already taste the schadenfreude. It tastes like applie pie, baseball, and the Star Spangled Banner.

I forgot the birth certificate controversy. We don’t even have his birth certificate.
Is there anything that we “know” about Obama that is not contained in his two autobiographical books? This is like hiring a young person based on their resume without checking references.

Make calls, GOTV, keep pushing. FWIW, I think Obama will win the popular vote regardless of the Electoral Vote. We’ll see.

Pish posh. McCain will win this and win it handily. Manly Rash said so. And Manly Rash is right. Buy. BUY.

Praying for MR, also. Keep up the good work!

I had a friend send me a scary email yesterday.
Obama gets impeached because he cannot prove citizenship, Biden is too ill to take office…so, welcome President Pelosi. I almost lost my lunch.
I still have faith. McCain will win. Count on it.

PatMac said tomorrow. I rather think he is hoping to pick up some cheap stocks before they rise after the election.

It’s amazing how positive one can remain when you don’t watch the MSM.

I met a CA Hillary delegate at McCain/Palin headquarters here in NV yesterday. She talked about how she was pushed, hit, and SPIT ON by Obama supporters in Denver. She said it was extremely scary…and this was no little, shrinking violet gal. She said she gets in Obamabot faces when they protest outside of McCain/Palin rallies, and tells them that the democrat party is now the party of hate.
She was amazing…the Californians have been out in force here knocking on doors and manning call centers in NV. I’m off now to replace them since they have to leave soon to be back in time to get to sleep for work tomorrow morning.

I’m focusing now on the correct visualization – it’s not of Chrissy and Peggy weeping, but I think it might be bad luck to share it…
