Zogby: McCain up 1

Right now, it’s only on Drudge, and … well, it’s Zogby. Still, it’s going in the direction we all believed the race was heading:
ZOGBY SATURDAY: Republican John McCain has pulled back within the margin of error… McCain outpolled Obama 48% to 47% in Friday, one day, polling. He is beginning to cut into Obama’s lead among independents, is now leading among blue collar voters, has strengthened his lead among investors and among men, and is walloping Obama among NASCAR voters. Joe the Plumber may get his license after all…
This may get pretty interesting. We’ll watch the other tracking polls, which have bounced all over the place the last few days. By Monday, we’ll get a better sense … or we’ll all be drinking heavily.

Reuters headline?
Obama has 5-point lead over McCain
They mention the poll, their name is on the poll, yet they dont mention the 48-47 McCain 1 point lead.
Very dishonest article. I think we will see a lot of headlines like that. Little change, move along, Obama in a landslide.

I think it’s good that the Obamabots think they have it in the bag…my feeling is that people who support McCain want a traditional country and will stand in line for hours to quietly case their vote even if they do think the country is going to hell because they will not stand idly by and let it happen. We are winning on Tuesday, I am confident of it.

Whatever. Thanks, Drudge, for at least giving me something to drink to tonight.
Now please get out and vote, dammit.

It was ME who used the phrase, “some strange sudden collapse”, with the accent on ’some strange’
My point was that there is no evidence that this story caused undecideds to jump to Gore–although that was clearly the purpose, as the media had the story for months
Those who are still undecided only a few days before an election are likely to not vote; others are looking for a ‘last straw’ or ‘final push’ to get them to do what they are leaning towards doing.
These people often vote AGAINST a candidate rather than for the other one, so some latent Gore voters may have used this story to finally slink off the fence and actually vote for AlGore–but no one knows how many and no study I know of claims that there were very many of them
The media used that story and improperly-weighted polls to create the mirage of a late swing to Gore, with the intention of creating more votes for Gore. Studies have shown that some people will vote for the candidate who they think will win,
After an election, the percentage of people who say they voted for the winner in a Prez election is 8 – 10 points higher than the actual total

Ok.. your mission/script till election day, should you choose it:
“So, who you voting for?”
Response Obama: “Yea, tell me about it. Everyone is voting Obama… It’s pretty clear who’s going to win by now, they’re projecting a landslide. I’d be surprised if he didn’t win by at least 15 points. McCain has no shot at the White House.”
Response McCain: “Vote”

You can all drink heartily if Obama loses and it certainly is good news and a cause to celebrate.
The bad news is once you sober up you realize McCain won.
You’re pretty much screwed either way.

My understanding is that the McCain lead is from the Friday portion of a 3-day tracking poll. If that’s the case, then Obama’s informercial was a flop and may have depressed or turned off voters.
CanadianGuy on November 1, 2008 at 1:54 AM
I know everyones been waiting for me to weigh in on the polls. Heres my theory. I believe Obama must have a double digit lead, 12 points or more to feel safe. In any poll we know there is a 3 to 4 point margin of error. And by now we all should know about the Bradley effect, another 5 points. But here are two things I havent heard anyone else talking about. These last two are linked really. Every poll, I mean every poll is using a heavy, heavy democrat tilt. The smallest is usually six percent more dems than repubs. They say this is the result of voter registration. Ok fine, but in 06 the difference was merely a point in actual turnout. I dont believe anyone thinks there will be a spread as big as 6 points. Lets not forget the long dem primary when so many repubs switched parties to prolong the dem primary(operation chaos anyone?) It is impossible, impossible to guage this number, how many people switched and intend to vote that way. This is why I believe the internal polls of the mccain campaign above everyone else. I believe their numbers are showing them that they are right there. Obama never could really close the deal on hillary…I see no reason to think he can close on mccain.
Lets reveiw: a 10 point lead for obama lets say. With the margin of error, that is really a 7 point lead. Let’s be conservative(no pun intended) with the Bradley effect and say its only 3 instead of 5. You are now down to 4. With the heavily skewed polls indicating a 6 to 10 point swing between dems and repubs, going on past election trends, the spread usually is even or a 1 percent lead for the dems. Again being generous, we’ll give them a 3 point spread. What you have left of that 10 point lead is 1 point, in either direction.
With this model, which I believe to be reasonable and logical, you have a dead heat. You have a race that is fluid and certainly not over. I believe this is why the polls have been all over the place. That and quite a few are being used to attempt to supress gop turnout…….
ritethinker on November 1, 2008 at 1:57 AM
Still not looking that good for McCain but it will at least be fun watching the Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself)sweat and cry like big babies. I can hear it now-”the Republicans are trying to steal another one”.
Goodale on November 1, 2008 at 1:57 AM
You spoke of seniors in MO. How do you think they’re trending? I’ve been hearing that Obama’s running ads scaring seniors into believing that McCain’s going to privatize their social security just in time for the market to tank. Clearly, that’s horsesh*t on several levels, not the least of which is that he couldn’t possibliy move anything like that through a Democratic Congress. That said, supposedly young people are being to edge away from Obama while elders are starting to edge toward him.
I figured the oldsters would have seen enought snake oil salesman never to bother going into that tent. I’ve worried about young people, too many guilt-ridden middle-agers, and (I can’t believe it) Hispanics.
Somebody give me an anecdotal story that I can go to sleep on.

Buckeye Sam, here’s one.
My immediate clan (including in-laws) numbers 19 registered voters (including 3 first-timers this election). Normally, there are 5 votes for Dems. Only one this time (a devout Kool-Aid drinker).
Also note, my ex-brother-in-law’s family are congenital Democrats. Two of ‘em are voting GOP for the first time in their lives (both are in their 50s).
That’s 15 votes in Pa. and three in Va. for McPalin.

Actually, not to be too nerdy, but the Dolittle Raid perhaps DID have strategic impact. The shocking event apparently helped tip the balance in the stand-off between Combined Fleet Commander Yamamoto and the Navy command over the Midway operation. The high command was humiliated by the raid (the “imperial presence” had been endangered), and Yamamoto was able to cite the event as support for his contention that the American carriers must be lured into a “decisive battle” so they could finally be destroyed.
That, along with a resignation threat (Yamamoto was at that point a super-star, having led 6 months of nearly non-stop victories for Japan at sea), did the trick, and Yamamoto finally had his Midway operation approved. The rest, as they say, is …..
(just a palate cleanser for history buffs – we now return you to our regularly scheduled menu of intense and fruitless electoral speculation)

Thanks all. For my part, two parents, a brother, and I are four for the good guys in Ohio. My brother’s wife is suspect because I think she was a Hillary backer. She’s a devout Catholic, so I can’t see how she’d vote for Obama. That said, my brother makes some dough so they’ll be looking at increased taxes out the ying yang. So I’ll call her a soft McCain. They have a college-age daughter who should be a quiet McCain. So that’s six in Ohio.
In VA, I have a sister who’s deep red, and happily she has three voting-age kids (teacher, college guy, and Naval Academy midshipman) all deep red–and throroughly schooled by their uncle. So that’s four in VA.
Other family lives in CA and IL, so they probably don’t count–and, in some cases, I don’t want to know.
OT: I think goptrust.com starts its Jeremiah Wright blitz Saturday or Sunday for football games in battleground states. This could be pretty entertaining. I think the group raised $6 million or $7 million and are raring to go.

And so it begins. Here is the top story on yahoo, which the PUMAs warned would happen:
AP poll shows Obama backers gleeful, McCain’s glum (AP)
“That smiling guy walking down the street? Odds are he’s a Barack Obama backer. The grouchy looking one? Don’t ask, and don’t necessarily count on him to vote next week, either.”
http://tinyurl.com/6j27m5
Michael in MI on November 1, 2008 at 8:21 AM
When I say the PUMAs warned about this, I am referring to the psyops campaign to depress the GOP into thinking there is no point in voting, to just give up, because Obama is going to win in a landslide.
It’s going to make for some really depressed and angry Obama supporters come Tuesday night when they realize the mass media has been lying to them all this time about the polls and McCain ends up pulling out the victory.
Michael in MI on November 1, 2008 at 8:22 AM
I’m sure this has been asked and answered but… is McCains performance trending the market?
Dash on November 1, 2008 at 8:25 AM
Sure, Michael.
Gallup has another 2-point break in Obama’s favor in the traditional daily tracking poll, the third Obama gain in as many days.
I posted some allegedly encouraging internal GOP polls above so who knows?
But predicting victory on the basis of 1 Zogby 1-day snapshot poll showing a 1-point McCain lead in the face of every other poll showing Obama ahead since God knows when is… optimistic.

i asked him about palin, and he said he wasn’t sure about her…i said the media’s done all they can to make her look dumb. he said, “yeah, you can’t accomplish what she’s accomplished at her age without having something upstairs”.

This election reminds me a lot of the 1948 election, “Dewey Defeats Truman.” Again we have a candidate(s) who represent more “the people next door” vs. a politician seen as condescending and enigmatic. We have a VERY unpopular Congress, just like the Republican Congress in ‘48. In ‘48, I think it was “Times” polled 50 pollsters right before the election. Every single one of them called the election for Dewey.
Truman caused a miracle once, why not McCain?

I felt this way prior to that 1-day Zogby thing. I don’t believe the polls are anywhere near accurate. I am just going on my instincts that the American public has not lost its collective fuhkeen minds the last 4 years and is not ready to accept socialism/borderline communism/marxism.
I agree completely though that it will come down to GOTV. But that’s why the AP is putting out stories like that: to depress the GOTV efforts. He did it in the Primaries to depress the Hillary voters and is doing it now. He has done it his entire political career.
But again, I just have to believe that the American public has not lost their fuhkeen minds and is not ready for socialism/communism/marxism.
If I am wrong, we have much bigger problems in this nation than just our politicians being socialists… we now apparently would have the majority of the nation which believes in socialism/communism/marxism. That would be scary.
Michael in MI on November 1, 2008 at 8:58 AM

jay12 on November 1, 2008 at 9:08 AM
I’ve listened to this audio about a dozen times. There are several aspects that suggest that at least the caller is legit, if not the poll itself. Most notable are the numbers given for Pennsylvania, both for the Dems and overall. It seems to me that a hoaxer would have invented more believable numbers. I did some editing to eliminate some of the extraneous commentary, reducing the length to 2 1/2 minutes, and reduced the file size further by reducing the bit rate. The result is here, in case anyone wants to download it and pass it around.

They, (pollsters) have to believe they have some basis for their big Obama leads…personally I think they’re using it as a cover up because they know this is a rigged election. If the months long polls reflect this big lead, no one should question Obama winning when he shouldn’t.

I see this election as something like this: Obama has invited the entire country over to a giant kegger where he’s given everyone roofie-laced beers. Some of us immediately recognized what he was doing, so, without even taking a sip, we poured our beers into that potted plant sitting in the corner. Others, after taking a sip or two and finding out that their beer tasted kind of funky, poured their drinks into that poor potted plants. Now, as the kegger is beginning to wind down, many people who took some serious swigs of Obama’s brew are managing to shake off their beer goggles just in time before he can get them into the bedroom and they’re hightailing it away from him as fast as they can. Many drank too deep and they’re passed out.
What we have to do is to do our best to tell those few still remaining who are deciding whether to drink or not to not drink Obama’s brew and to try to wake up as many of those who’ve passed out as possible before it’s too late.
Matt Helm on November 1, 2008 at 9:51 AM

That’s as clear as it gets.

Not so much cooking the books as manipulating the sampling demographics. The polling organizations – at least the serious ones – are in business to make money and if they are proven wrong consistently, their reputations suffer. Then again, there are internal polls and public polls.
The internals are where the real money is and it’s entirely conceivable that these characters are providing accurate internals to the campaigns and less-than-accurate data for public consumption for a very hefty sum of money.
For example, the Obama campaign, swimming in cash, could very easily pay off pollsters to make it appear that Obama is far ahead of McCain in order to depress Republican turnout.
It’s a dangerous game of chicken because at some point they are going to collide with the brick wall of the ultimate poll – election day.
The question, therefore, is when one of them will flinch and be the first to accurately reflect in the public polls what is being reported in the internal polls.
It would appear that Zogby – who has a pro-Democrat bias – was the first to flinch.
