And so, after six months of being studiously ignored, amnesty makes a last-minute cameo.
The good news for “Aunti”? No matter who wins, her path to citizenship’s assured.
Zeituni Onyango, 56, referred to as “Aunti Zeituni” in Obama’s memoir, was instructed to leave the United States by a U.S. immigration judge who denied her asylum request, a person familiar with the matter told the AP late Friday. This person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to discuss Onyango’s case.
Information about the deportation case was disclosed and confirmed by two separate sources, one of them a federal law enforcment official. The information they made available is known to officials in the federal government, but the AP could not establish whether anyone at a political level in the Bush administration or in the McCain campaign had been involved in its release…
Onyango’s case — coming to light just days before the presidential election — led to an unusual nationwide directive within Immigrations and Customs Enforcement requiring any deportations prior to Tuesday’s election to be approved at least at the level of ICE regional directors, the U.S. law enforcement official told the AP.
The unusual directive suggests that the Bush administration is sensitive to the political implications of Onyango’s case coming to light so close to the election.
The boss spent the wee hours of the morning devouring this story so I’ve got nothing left but scraps to pick through. First scrap: The One denies any knowledge of her immigration status, thereby confirming that the guy who famously said, “I am my brother’s keeper,” clearly isn’t his aunt’s. Second scrap: MM’s right, of course, that the same nutroots all-stars who’ve shrugged off politically motivated government snooping into Joe the Plumber’s records will find the feds’ leak here very, very troubling. Expect the inevitable special comment on Monday night’s “Countdown” to be highly nuanced indeed. Third scrap: Yes, Aunti donated illegally to the campaign — in the same small increments that keep so many of Obama’s donors out of FEC reports — and yes, they’re promising to refund the money. Because, you see, if there’s anyone who’s a stickler about accepting illegal donations, it’s Barack Obama.
Fourth and most important scrap: Any political fallout from this? The AP, at least, probably doesn’t think so or else it wouldn’t be dropping a hot potato in his lap 72 hours before the polls open. In better economic circumstances, with an anti-amnesty GOP nominee, this might have driven a little extra turnout. As it is, we’re poised to elect a guy who’s “certainly friendly” with a domestic terrorist. America’s willing to forgive him that, but it’s going to pitch a fit over a lost aunt no one’s heard of? If anything, this might earn The One a little vicarious sympathy: It ain’t for nothing that ICE issued that “unusual directive” making sure no one tries to deport her before the vote, and it won’t help McCain if this is seen as some sort of eleventh-hour dirty trick being played by Bush to try to help him win. Exit quotation: “I think people are suspicious about stories that surface in the last 72 hours of a national campaign.”

Obama’s team admits communication with her two years after her asylum was denied, and she was at that point an illegal alien. I don’t see how it does anything but hurt him.

I actually think the story will have effect, but not of it’s own. It adds to a cumulative narrative about his hypocrisy. As John Edwards said, (paraphrased) how can you trust a politician that doesn’t take care of his family.

The media has a new theme. Pretend Obama is up, pretend that liberals aren’t bigots, watch him lose the real vote. Come back a few weeks later, and casually point out to their readers that none of this mess of a McCain presidency would have happened if they had nominated Hillary. Then also point out that it’s just four short years until they can do just that.

I find this leak to be troubling, too (assuming it was illegally given/obtained). I find the fact that an illegal alien lives in public housing even more troubling – but both give me great pause and represent two more nails in the nail-ridden coffin of faith in our institutions.

The resonance is this: The guy who wants to spread other people’s wealth has a real problem spreading his own to his own family (not such problem as far as Wright is concerned however, since he had plenty of cash to hand him). Allah, come on man, be reasonable here. News of a DUI that was purged from Bush’s record back in teh 1970s almost cost him the Presidency in 2000, and that news was released in the last 72 hours.
I agree that the story won’t have legs because the media won’t push it, and McCain’s campaign and surrogates have no funding to push the story independently. It’s a shame.

I would just add that this case (and possible leak) was far different from the Joe The Plumber case. First of all, this one involved an illegal alien, while Joe is a US citizen – that makes a huge difference so far as I am concerned. Secondly, it seems that most of the information for this case was gotten legitimately. I don’t even know why they needed the ‘official’ confimation. Most importantly, this was instigated by the private press, seeking confirmation of information, while the Joe The Plumber case was instigated by government officials seeking official dirt.

C’mon, Obama had to know she was here illegally, but if he or anyone else in his campaign made it known (or tried to get her out of the country) it would backfire big time on him so they tried to keep it quiet.

The Obama campaign says it returned her illegal contribution. Anyone see a photo of a check or cash from the Obama campaign she received? I doubt she has a credi card to refund the charges.

I want to know how she got into the D-Street projects. The waiting list for public housing is years long – years – unless you know a politician who can “fix” it for you. That’s just the way Boston works trust me I know. I grew up in Southie. I still have family there.
She’s working for the BHA. How does a politically unconnected woman from Kenya not only get in housing but get a little job with them?
This thing stinks to high heaven… trust me. It’ll come out because we do have a few honest journalists at the Herald who will dig…. Howie Carr or Michelle McPhee will get the truth.

I still find it stunning that a flood of lies from Osama Obama, plus those few revelations about his shady past and associations that have made their way into public discussion, have not torpedoed his candidacy long ago.
“Aunt Zeituni” would wipe out a Republican candidate’s whole career. Bomber Billy Ayers would make any other candidate an object of public scorn. Wright would make anyone who supports him a laughingstock.
Except, that is, for a fake like Obama. That Messianic thing has really worked for him. So, too, has his skin color. In fact, those are the only things he has needed.

I find that rather hard to believe, especially since she apparently attended his swearing in. If the MSM were doing it’s job (as opposed to expressing grave concern about the fact that this story came out at all) it would be looking into the various ways a wealthy and well-connected person would go about helping a woman in Onyango’s situation.
As I mentioned before, I’d be very curious to know whether Onyango was represented by counsel in her ICE matter, and if so, who that counsel was (think Watergate burglars). Moreover, based on the little I’ve read, she seems to live a comfortable life for someone on a taxpayer funded “volunteer stipend” (which I assume is a clever MA mechanism of directing taxpayer dollars to illegal immigrants who don’t qualify for social security). How is that possible?

This is a losing position for Republicans. Bush had it right on immigration: do a guest worker program, secure the borders, and deport criminal aliens. Unfortunately Bush wasn’t as serious as he should have been about the last two points of that agenda. There are a bajillion Latinos in “red” states such as Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Nevada, Colorado, and Florida. Many of them vote. Most of them are sensitive to immigration issues. And one of the reasons you’re seeing VA, NC, and CO going blue this year is because Latino voters are heavily breaking in favor of Obama. One reason why is the perception of Republican hostility toward Latinos.
You are now witnessing the beginning of the end of the GOP as a national party, if that trend contiues.

OT: Score one for GOP GOTV. I just got a nice reminder e-mail providing me with my poll location, driving directions, and polling hours. The e-mail is very well done. I realize that it I received it because I’m someone who contributed to McCain’s campaign. Still, it’s a nice touch–I especially appreciated the polling hours–and I will be waiting to pull the lever when my poll opens in suburban Cincinnati on Tuesday.

I’ve wondered about that. I did legal services work in Dorchester about ten years ago and the wait was considerable – I thought the situation might have changed. As for her “stipend,” I figured it was probably something the state or city makes available for elderly illegal immigrants who aren’t getting social security. If it’s some kind of special gig, that’s even more interesting.

For those of you that think this is not going to have an impact on some voters, I would like to politely disagree with you. Character does matter, and if 1 out of 7 voters can be flipped, then this might help when it comes down to comfort voters. This smacks of hypocrisy when it comes to “I am my brother’s keeper”, his family matters mantra, not to mention “caring for the least of these”. If you add this new tidbit of info to the Ayers and Khalidi tidbits, and the constantly moving tax bracket, you then have some character issues to look at. Add ACORN, Infanticide, Iraq and his Senate record in reaching across the isle and earmarks, then you really have some serious character points to reflect upon.
Some voters are comfort zone voters. They may not be able to cite chapter and verse of why Obama is bad for the country, but they might get a character vibe that does not make them feel comfortable in casting their vote for him. And if there ever was a group of people that base things on feelings; I would say these undecided voters, or the 1 in 7 could be flipped voters are very much the hooked on a feeling comfort zone folks that this story might impact.

He did not know Ayers was NOT reformed. He thinks there are 57 American states. He said “a bomb” was dropped on Pearl Harbor. He says Khalidi is just a professor. He does not know the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. He thought “Weezie” was in “Sanford and Son”! He knows Americans who reject socialism are “selfish”. He knows he is qualified to be POTUS because he has voted present over 130 times and lived overseas for a few years and traveled to different countries. Once again, where did they send the 2004 invite? Mail cannot be forwarded indefinitely, and in any case, I would imagine that it takes a very long time to send something from Chicago to an address in Kenya, only to have it forwarded to, say, Boston.

Obama is an attorney, even if he hadn’t asked her about her status directly (something I find very hard to believe), he’d still have realized what was going on.

If anything the wait has gotten worse due to the housing cost boom and the considerable gentrification that happened in Southie in particular. Triple Deckers in Southie were converted to $500K+ per floor Condos forcing out all but the wealthy… and long time residence who kept the homes in the family. Many of the renters were forced to scramble for housing and the Public lists were long. I have little doubt someone got her in. Someone put her at the head of the line. They knew exactly who she was…after all, look how easy it was for a paper in the UK to track her down…

The Obama campaign said she returned to Kenya nine years ago! His brother says she moved to the U.S. eight years ago. I am inclined to believe the brother, which would make a liar out of Obama or the, er, “low-level staffer” who supplied the explanatory statement to the A.P.
The campaign claims she went back to Africa in 1992, but then they claim they invited her to his Swearing-in in 2004. They only admit to knowing she was “in” Boston in 2006 because she called the campaign, but they don’t say if they thought she was just passing through or living there.
It would have been perfectly reasonable for them not to have known her whereabouts, except for the fact that they managed to get an invitation to her in 2004.

It’s interesting that Obama’s aunt filed for asylum — a big scam way to stay in the U.S. when you’re not otherwise qualified to be here and don’t want to get in line for a proper visa. Wonder who clued auntie onto that particular scam?
I also wonder what was the basis for her asylum application: I need to escape from Kenya because it’s falling apart under the thuggish leadership of the anti-democratic criminal Raila Odinga, who my nephew Barack Obama helped campaign for in Kenya a few years ago.

Either Obama knew she was in the country illegally (and took her campaign contributions anyway), or he left his Kenyan Auntie out of all campaign events for some other reason.
He made a trek to the homestead of his white family in Indiana.
He talked about his goat herding father coming from Kenya for opportunity frequently while he was on the trail.
Michelle’s family was allowed to come to the convention.
Yet Auntie doesn’t make the cut to join him on the campaign trail at any point. She was special enough for the Senate swearing in. Either she fell from grace or he knew she was here illegally.

It obviously went to Boston, because she’s been living in the same place for about 5 years. If you read his denial re:her immigration status, he doesn’t say he had no idea she was living in Boston. He knew she was there two years ago as well, but he didn’t go see her.

The Times’ story says she had a tourist visa in 1999 but that Obama “provided no assistance in getting her a tourist visa” for his swearing in. Interesting way to put it. Did he help her get the tourist visa for the 1999 visit? Did she overstay THAT visa, or did she go back to Kenya and then overstay a separate tourist visa issued for her 2004 visit?
Lots and lots of questions.

Sooooh, we know that Obama knew Uncle Omar was in Boston, and had been there since the ’60s (and was still there when Barry went to Harvard). Therefore, when the campaign says that Auntie went to visit “friends” on the “East Coast” nine years ago before returning to Kenya, are we not to believe she was visiting her brother Omar in Boston (who btw, changed his name to “Obama Onyango”, his African name)?

It is reported that about 40% of illegal aliens in the U.S. are actually visa overstays. So, we just need to get someone in charge of checking those visas and cleaning up.

Brother George says she left for the U.S. about 8 years ago, but it was probably 9 years ago, when she visited the Obamas in Chicago, and went East to “visit friends”. Auntie also says in the Times story that she has been a frequent visitor since 1975, so she has been getting a lot of tourist visas. That’s not the issue. The issue is that the Obama campaign is lying about their knowledge of her whereabouts, and are probably lying about their knowledge of her immigration status.

I think this is hands off for the Republicans but it is too bad we don’t have a media to shine a light on all the flaws in the various stories. I think the fact that he would allow his aunt to live here illegally and take tax payer money says it all. And now that it has come to light he waves his hand and says begone. It should be a wake up call to the millions that are going to vote for him, that think he is going to solve their problems. If only we had a media.

They may try to lead us to believe that, but they never actually say it.
We know it isn’t the case, because she’s been living in the same place in Boston for at least 5 years.
And we know the Obama campaign last talked to her two years ago, about the time he started running for President. And we know she said she couldn’t talk until after the election.
We also know that despite having been invited to the Senate swearing-in, she has not been invited or invoked on the campaign trail.

It can be really hard to get a tourist visa to the United States for people from some countries. You have to prove you have something to go back home to (financial interests, family, business, etc)
That’s one reason I’m against easy amnesty. Good people can wait years to try to get here.
