“I do not fear Barack Obama. I even rather like him. I certainly feel I have much more in common with him than I do with John McCain. To lead this country, though, I prefer the man who has seen more and suffered more and felt more. For all his faults, it is John McCain who is the more universal man.
“I vote for John McCain.”

McCain’s on Weekend Update now.
Dr.Cwac.Cwac on November 2, 2008 at 12:19 AM
If you don’t mind hanging out for a couple seconds (and ignoring the fu stuff), what do you think would be an improvement?
Let me postulate this – we are winning in Iraq, so isn’t the wise thing to do to finish? Regardless of the wisdom of entering, if we leave too soon, we are creating a problem for the next generation.
Afghanistan must be dealt with too, right? Taliban and AQ came from there right? So let’s finish that, disagree?
If you do agree, then are you concerned she is going to cheer for a new front? McCain would be more judicious then Bush with the military (note his resistance to Reagan on that issue).
Spirit of 1776 on November 2, 2008 at 12:19 AM
Now I think I can say this for sure:we are not going to see another Bush in US politics anytime soon or somebody like him. And I don’t use the words in a elogius way. I’m afraid that the Bush name is radioactive in the GOP. And I highly doubt that McCain is ever going to have close to him people that were close to Donald Rumsfeld for example. So no need to worry about palin being transformed in a Bush clone. But if you want to find yourself reasons to vote for Barr its a prsonal opinion just not try to make other people believe them too.

You are entitled to your opinion. Just a non-personal counter point to that opnion.
We didn’t find the WMD’s we suspected, we did find a lot of necessary ingredients to WMD’s and got them out of Iraq. Iraq was under UN sanctions, refused to comply, the US carried out the UN sanctions with some ally support. That’s what has been done. It’s the past.
We are on the verge of leaving a stable and growing democracy in Iraq. A country we WILL have a security treaty with before it’s over. A treaty that will force us to defend that democracy in the future.
Obama wants to pull out immediately, BUT reserves the right to go back into Iraq if circumstances dictate it should be done.
14 of 18 provinces in Iraq are under Iraqi government and military control. US servicemember deaths are extremely low. The end is in sight. Once the Iraq government has total control, the treaty is in place, there won’t be a need to go back into Iraq. No one in NATO has been invaded since NATO was formed. Is that because the French is part of NATO? The English are part of NATO? The Spanish are part of NATO? No! Because the US is part of NATO. Hopefully one day Iraq will be part of NATO.
Back to why pulling out immediately is a bad idea. I’m retired military, I care about those in uniform, and I ache from every death they suffer. The job is so close to being done, that I don’t want to see them pulled out prematurely, leave Iraq in chaos, and then later IF Obama deem’s it necessary to go back into a MEAT GRINDER and finish a job we should have finished in the first place, but chose to drop the ball just short of the finsih line.
We must finish what we started. If you care about out military members at all, it is the only option.

What everyone seems to forget here is that we had a chance to take care of this with Desert Storm, but Colin Powell (yes, the same Benedict Arnold who has endorsed the Comobama) put the kibosh to it.
Saddam could have been history in 1991. Remember that.

It used to be that when the Cowboys did Good, the Democrats won, and vice versa: 1992, 1993. When they got knocked out by the 49ers in 1994, the Republicans were able to take Congress
by the late 90s, though, the Cowboys sucked too badly for this ‘paradign’ to continue working

We will have plenty of time after the election to deal with the Frums of the world.
Get everybody to vote McCain. The news on Obama is out. I was just working the phones earlier today here in FL and one call in particular was interesting. The gentleman had not made up his mind who to vote for but had reservations about voting Republican and reservations about Obama because he knew very little about him (big surprise given no vetting by media). I was able to get him to lean McCain though by mentioning how much both McCain and Sarah fought their own party on many issues and that they would be the best team to leave government reform.
The momentum has now shifted to McCain. It is now just getting out the vote and not letting anything get in your way. There is no time for hope at the moment, only time to fight, claw, strive for the finish line with no breath left.
FOCUS!
Sapwolf on November 2, 2008 at 12:43 AM

We’ll have to continue the discussion some other time. Debating the merits of staying in Iraq as well as the US’s role in the world will take many more hours. I need to get back to studying, but we’ll continue this discussion some other day. But I encourage you to read this essay that I previously posted, which explains why the US should have taken a realist approach toward Iraq, as opposed to our current idealist approach.
I’ll be praying for McCain to win. And if McCain loses, I’ll be praying for the GOP to learn its lesson and transform itself, and for Huckabee, Romney, Giuliani, and maybe even Fred Thompson to be cast off into political oblivion.

But I also feel like sparring with him about his alleged “genius”. My son’s a more inventive bass player than Roger Waters is. And Syd Barrett’s bizarre guitar licks and sonic experimentation set the tone for what Pink Floyd became after Barrett went off the deep end.

BUT, if Obama wins, you will not get any more chances to ‘find’ your way.
I happen to agree with you that it was NOT a conservative thing to do for Bush to nation-build in Iraq.
Voting for Obama WILL teach us a lesson. But NOT the one you think.
Obama is our version of Hugo Chavez or Castro. The damage he will do will be FAR worse than any nation-building in Iraq. Obama will make war on US.
Sapwolf on November 2, 2008 at 12:51 AM
Roger, you’ll have to talk to your wife about going to bed happy.
Oh — and don’t cash those checks from Obama just yet — they’re made of rubber.

Jeff, I agree that Obama is terrifying, and that is why I still prefer McCain to win, although some conservatives don’t. But a McCain victory will validate and continue what Bush has done for the last 8 years. If Obama wins, the GOP will more likely realize its faults and change itself. There are pros and cons for both outcomes.
Then bugger off and vote for Barr. D!ckhead.

Roger Waters on November 2, 2008 at 12:54 AM
MedSchoolCatholic,
It’s an attractive theory, and I understand the reasons many find it so. But, unfortunately, it has zero empirical support. The Dems took Congress in 2006 yet, despite having made no attempts much less any progress toward fulfilling their promises, they are still the heavy favorites to win even more seats in 2008. Examine other contests over the past 100 years and you will see the same pattern.
That theory has been argued many times, and put into practice many times, yet has never yielded the desired result. In the meantime, while I agree both parties are heavily statist, as a matter of degree and philosophical committment, the Dems are far and away the more evil of the two alternatives and have been for 40 years. They will necessarily do more damage to all your stated goals.
Once again, please consider that we do not vote for parties for President, but individuals. Even if the theory were correct, it would apply only to Congress, not the White House.
Look at the empirical evidence, I beg you.
Think most particularly about the Supreme Court appointments, which might total as many as four over the next 8 years, including Scalia’s seat. Read my blog post on the subject. Consider that SCOTUS appointments are for life, that all Federal law is influenced by their decisions and will be for the 100 years or more, in all likelihood. These are more important than Presidential policies, which can be stymied in many ways. Consider how a fairly conservative court slowed down the harmful New Deal programs for several years until FDR’s attempt to pack the court spooked them, and then he later appointed a total of 8. We are still living with those decisions today.

Of the goosie and the gander, madame
Which gender is the grander, madame?
To render total candor, madame, the spendour is the male’s!
We must be an example to our sex
Give our boots a dapper strap
And it’s smarter if our garters have some snap!
Cravats should be flounced about our necks
Wear a nightcap when we nap
Be bewitching with some stitching on our cap!
Now, drape our cape
And puff our cuff
Embroider those lapels!
Be the king of the beasts in pastels!
La, but someone has to strike a pose
And bear the weight of well-tailored clothes
And that is why the Lord created men
Tav on November 2, 2008 at 12:57 AM
I can’t forget that, I was there. Went through the Kuwaiti minefield on the 6th wave. But you bring up a great point for me to expound on.
We COULD have overun Saddam in Desert Storm. BUT we made agreements with our ally’s at the time not to do so. AT the time Saddam was a stabilizer in the region because he was oppossed to Iraq and their zealots. At the time of the Desert Strom attacks, the Shiites in Iraq thought we would over throw Saddam, and they worked to help make that happen.
It didn’t happen.
Who was our biggest problem in Iraq this time around? The Shiites. We should have saw this coming. We did leave them hanging, you can argue about it, but that’s what happened, and they paid a heavy price for it. Small wonder they didn’t trust us this time around. I as a Desert Storm Veteran don’t really blame them. I thought it was screwed up too.
Now, we have their trust, we have proven until at least the next election we won’t leave them hanging. We want to help them get on their feet, and then we want to get the heck out of Dodge. It’s a win win situation.
Leaving now will only repeat the mistake we made during Desert Storm. And going back to fix that mistake later will only cost more US Servicemembers lives.
We must leave victorious and with a treaty, so that we don’t have to go back later.

both of your posts are eloquent and accurate and you have more patience that I ever will, but flashing light ( however bright ) at the Blind just won’t accomplish anything.
My first post on this thread was about so many people in the USA becomming ‘Katrina Americans’, existing in a state of permanent need and persistent demand: Government exists to take care of them, and any failure of government to meet their incessant needs–and reverse their bad decisions–makes them angry and half-crazy or worse

As a young paleo-conservative, borderline Libertarian, I dislike McCain. GREATLY. I’ve hated most of his antics in the Senate for the past several years. In fact, I didn’t vote for him in the primary, and told myself I would never vote for him, short of him picking a good veep.
Luckily for him, I enjoy Gov. Palin. That, and the alternative is worse. I really dislike Obama.
Would I have liked a strong, third-party candidate this year? Sure. But this year isn’t the year for one.

Janos,
I don’t know how many such Americans there are, but I grant it’s a concern. I’m convinced, though, that MedSchoolCatholic is not one of them. It’s he, and others like him I’m trying to reach.
Even if I fail, I’d rather go down fighting for what I know is right than give up, however tempting that choice often seems.
And, Janos, there might just be enough of us to turn the tide. It isn’t just about numbers because (among other things), it isn’t just about voting. There are much more fundamental factors that move history. Spread the right ideas to the active, who perhaps don’t have the best tools, and the passive won’t matter.
