Nerd versus nerd: Who will win the “World of Warcraft” election?

posted at 4:00 pm on November 1, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via Kotaku, looks like a firewall for The One in case McCain surprises him in Pennsylvania. They should get Palin online and send her in there for one last rally on Monday. She’s the base’s very own Sword of a Thousand Truths.

At least we’ve got the dwarf vote locked up. Exit question: How many people here actually play this? I thought I was the biggest beta male on HA.

You know how polls are irrelevant?

Polls in video games are at least twice as irrelevant.

Hey, I guess it’s a “light” story, but I couldn’t finish watching it, it was so pathetic.

Was there at least someone toward the end who pointed out, in-game, how pathetic this idea was?

I used to work with dudes that spent every single hour they could playing that game, to the point that they couldnt have girlfriends, really. They spent the whole day discussing strategy about it, too. Had to plead with them to shut up about it finally.

I play Eve Online and Warhammer Online (WAR is on temporary hiatus for lack of PC ability). My free gaming rituals are Kingdom of Loathing in the morning and Urban Dead in the evening…each good for a half hour of distraction. Never touched WoW at all.

Oh, and I gave up on that Duels game that was featured on Hot Air when they reset all the levels. It was cool, but I didn’t want to start over from the beginning again.

James on November 1, 2008 at 5:15 PM

Oh, and by the way, you might note that the Horde’s color is red, while Alliance’s is blue. Just sayin’…

Alpha male here, voting for McCain.

Hi I’m Olaf, and I’ve been WoW free for 24 months now..

UncleOlaf on November 1, 2008 at 6:01 PM

Oh, and WoW reminds me too much of Acorn with their numbers fudge of how many people they claim play..

Yeah they have “11 million players”

If you count 8 million Chinese gold farmers, and about 500,000 losers that multi-box on more than 2 accounts, somewhere in the remainder is the numbers of “normal” players..

UncleOlaf on November 1, 2008 at 6:05 PM

That was actually a very good video. I used to play WoW but I quit about a year and three months ago. I had a 70 Priest, a 60 warrior, and a 60 rogue on Alliance. But I am glad to have gotten over that game. Next up Star Wars: The Old Republic!

Nonfactor on November 1, 2008 at 6:06 PM

Had a 70 NE hunter named Metrosexual. 70 Gnome warrior (Gnomes rule) named Toestubber. Also a 70 Tauren Druid named Madcowdiseas, without the e because not enough letters allowed. I quit though. That game does burn you, just like any other MMO. And I am not really all that Beta either. My Alpha is always intimidating people. But I like it that way. People annoy me.

Former member of one of the top 20 guilds worldwide in EQ, EQ2 and WoW here and just recently hung up my raiding wizzy hat after 9 years. At the height of popularity of EQ I had one of the top 100 Wizards worldwide on Mangelo, was a big part of the reason why they nerfed Mamaburn and taught many young Wizards the fine art of quad kiting. Was also a member of one of the best farm teams in game, too. We made alot of money off of that, in fact one of our group members made enough off of selling the plat to pay for the down payment on his house. Had numerous worldwide discoveries and wrote guides for EQ, EQ2 and WoW. In my most recent guild the oldest player was 72 and the youngest was 13 (she played with her dad).

I remember reading somewhere that at it’s height EQ had an economy that would have been ranked 47th in the world if it were a real country, I am sure WoW would be ranked higher then that now. I do remember reading that WoW had more players in the US then farmers.

11 million players at how much a month?

Good lord!

angelat0763 on November 1, 2008 at 7:58 PM

The sub numbers are a little deceiving. First of all, Blizzard never discloses its actual subscription numbers publicly, so 11 million is just high-end speculation. But there’s no doubt that they do have millions of subscribers.

Many of those “subscribers” are Asians, however, who use a different pay system than Americans and Europeans. For instance, here in the US we pay with a flat $15 monthly fee (though you can get discounts by buying multiple months at once), and in return get unrestricted access to all servers all the time. It doesn’t matter if you log in for 1 hour or 100 hours a month, you still pay $15.

In most Asian markets (and I think also Australia), a pay-per-play system is used. Players buy batches of hours, and only pay again when they’ve used up the hours credited to their account. So if you only play 1 hour a month, you’re still one of the 11 million subscribers, though you’ve technically only spent a tiny sum of money that particular month. (Alternatively, you could play a lot and rack up a big bill, though I suspect that in general the average Asian subscriber pays less than $15.)

No matter how you slice it, though, there’s no doubt Blizzard (and it’s owner, Vivendi/Universal) is still making a hell of a lot of money. On top of the subs, they have a highly successful WoW collector’s card-game (from which purchasers can actually win in-game rewards like specialized mounts, pets and costumes). And with a boxed expansion pack retailing for nearly $40 bucks a pop (nearly the price of an entire stand-alone PC game) releasing on the 13th, it’s guaranteed to be a particularly good Christmas season for them.

Black Adam on November 2, 2008 at 4:59 AM

Hmmm…

The people who made up my farm group consisted of an Air Force pilot and his wife, a Marine DI (predictably he was our MT, the guy definetly had the voice of command), a Pharmacist, a baggage handler and an engineer at a TV station. My last guild was run by a software designer who had just signed a book deal and was getting out of the software business to write full time. In that guild the oldest person was 67, the youngest 14 (she and her dad played). They worked at a variety of occupations, from homemaker to Philosphy professor to a small engine mechanic at Sears to an RN. The guild was a basic slice of America, with a couple of Aussies, Kiwis, a couple expat Americans in Dubai and one guy who lived in Singapore tossed in.

Yes, I think these “nerds” will be voting, hun. Except the 14 year old.

Pfft. Silly WoW carebears. Call me when you want to play a real man’s MMO, I’ll be in EvE.

wearyman on November 2, 2008 at 9:12 AM

I’m sorry guys, but Warhammer Online is the new choice of MMORPGs.

Here’s my theory: the vibrant, child-like colours and slightly fey, almost effeminate world of World of Warcraft appeals to children, women, and rather ineffectual men. Is it then a surprise that the people of WOW would vote for Obama? And they think he’s an Elf (WOW elves are very, very effeminate. Almost gender-neutral.)

Why not ask people who play Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning who they’d vote for, and I bet you get a different picture. WAR is for the capable and the decisive. They would be McCain all the way.

Discuss …

dcpolwarth on November 2, 2008 at 9:31 AM

WAR is for the capable and the decisive.
dcpolwarth on November 2, 2008 at 9:31 AM

Warwussie online is consensual PVP, and there is no real loss for dying.

It’s the same basic concept as WoW with a “darker” look and feel. Whoop de freaking do.

EvE Online is “consensual” ONLY in the sense that you consent to PVP by hitting the “undock” button. You want dark and gritty? Play EvE Online.

Of course, I realize that the chance of real loss in-game may turn some off, and an actual player-run economy similar in many respects to the real world economy may be too much to handle for some of you “beta males”. But anytime you wimps wanna “Man Up” to an MMO that has an actual learning curve, feel free to join me in EvE.
