Erica Jong: Obama defeat will bring civil war

posted at 10:30 am on November 1, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | regular view

Normally, I’d ignore the rantings of the fringe, but Erica Jong sees herself as a replacement for Susan Sontag … which still makes her fringe, but noteworthy.  In an interview with Italian magazine Corriere della Sera, the Fear of Flying author makes the jump to public moonbat by predicting an armed struggle if Barack Obama loses the presidential election.  Why?  Because someone has to target the “Republican Mafia”, dagnabbit:

Basically, Jong says her fear that Obama might lose the election has developed into an “obsession. A paralyzing terror. An anxious fever that keeps you awake at night.” She also says that her friends Jane Fonda and Naomi Wolf are extremely worried that Obama will be sabotaged by Republican dirty tricks, and that if an Obama loss indeed comes to pass, the result will be a second American Civil War. …

“The record shows that voting machines in America are rigged.”

“My friends Ken Follett and Susan Cheever are extremely worried. Naomi Wolf calls me every day. Yesterday, Jane Fonda sent me an email to tell me that she cried all night and can’t cure her ailing back for all the stress that has reduces her to a bundle of nerves. … My back is also suffering from spasms, so much so that I had to see an acupuncturist and get prescriptions for Valium.”

And the #1 quote from Erica Jong?  The troop drawdown in Iraq has a secret purpose:

“If Obama loses it will spark the second American Civil War. Blood will run in the streets, believe me. And it’s not a coincidence that President Bush recalled soldiers from Iraq for Dick Cheney to lead against American citizens in the streets.”

I’d bold the more lunatic portions, but who can make that distinction?  Jong makes Truthers look almost sane.  (Almost.)

While I’m sure most of us fret constantly about the collective psychoses of Jane Fonda and Naomi Wolf, it’s difficult to see who Jong wants to impress with these statements.  If Jong is so obsessed, why isn’t she talking about this in America?  Why talk to the Italian magazine instead of getting involved to stop the Second Civil War?  I guess Jong’s commitment to democracy and her country consists of popping a few happy pills and seeing an acupuncturist.  What a patriot!

It could be worse, I guess.  Fonda could get Jong to travel to Pakistan in order to get photo ops of them operating Taliban anti-aircraft guns.

Speaking of which, by the way:  of whom does Jong’s rhetoric remind readers?  “Blood will run in the streets.”   Sounds like an echo of 1960s radical terrorists like, oh, the Weather Underground.

And the first white flag on the battlefield will be Jong’s.

So if BO wins it doesn’t count right?

Twilight Zone stuff

Well Erica Jong “Ms” Fear of Flying does she have a new book coming out or something she is trying to hump? Why would I care what Erica Jong thinks again? Jong? Aging bitterly, this is why they make a hormone replacement patch. No, oh no, not Palin, anything but a women who can run a government effectively, and look good while she is doing it:)

Heh. I guess she got disillusioned by us rednecks in flyover country and went to talk to people who might actually pay attention. Snort.

P.S. Watching GameDay on ESPN, expecting a respite from politics. No such luck; Luke Russert is on, albeit briefly. Sigh.

grasshopper68 on November 1, 2008 at 10:38 AM

I think her reasoning behind what would cause a civil war is mistaken. I think the outcome she predicts is entirely possible.

Christoph on November 1, 2008 at 10:38 AM

We already have a civil war.

The good news is, our opponents are aging baby boom losers like Erica Jong.

The demographics alone favor us to win. The enemy attrition rate is high.

Well hey…”real” america looks so far down on “fake” america i doubt they’d care all that much. Here in NY the more we hear that real america rhetoric the more we resent it. I hear someone say that theyre voting for McCain because they’re a real american…that theres a fake america…i know they’re talking about me. they’re talking about my whole family…my aunts and uncles and parents who made it out of the ghettos of the south bronx and spanish harlem to raise me and my brother and my cousins in suburbs that offered us a much better life. Politics is one thing…but keep pushing that real america crap and sooner or later the fake america’s gonna realize we really, deep down, want nothing to do with your crap anymore. the economist had a good phrase for it…”southern friend moralism”. It doesnt fly here, and thats not because we’re not american…

An incidental reason for Obama to lose is seeming more and more important: to prove that other that fantasists like Jong the American people are not insane.

exception on November 1, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Fear of flopping?

This assumes that Obama supporters are all law breakers. What a self-loathing, negative view to have of your own party.

Are they prepping the talking points here? The voting machines that worked in ‘06 will suddenly fail in ‘08?

Mojave Mark on November 1, 2008 at 10:42 AM

Susan Sontag couldn’t have been all that bad. She wrote some pretty decent literary criticism. And she was married to that intellectual stud Philip Rieff, whom every conservative should read.

I think Sontag just came unhinged in middle age. Deep down, she had something going on.

jeff_from_mpls on November 1, 2008 at 10:42 AM

I’m surprised I haven’t seen this at the Huffington Post. Probably too crazy to be posted there.

JammieWearingFool on November 1, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Do they mean blood will run on the streets because disappointed Obama supporters will break a few windows and torch some cars?

Or do they mean blood will run on the streets because the left will be forced to resort to violence to achieve their aims? I imagine Ayers and Dorn are digging their old combat fatigues out of the closet right now.

You all should check out Dennis Prager’s interview with Naomi Wolf from a week or two ago, in which she repeated the above themes. Prager was kind, respectful and patient with her, and allowed her to come across as an absolute raving lunatic. Podcasts and transcripts here.

The left is making troubling inroads into mainstream American politics. If McCain can pull this off the reaction of the left may be so extreme that they’re pushed back to the fringes where they belong. One more reason, as if you needed one, to get out and vote on Tuesday and drag others with you.

I do sympathise with the crazies on one point though: I’m having a lot of sleepless nights worrying about an Obama victory. And I’m English…

I live in Northern Ohio, and if McCain wins, I’m not going into work the next morning. The Dems have poisoned the well so much by saying “the only way Obama can lose, given the poll numbers, is if McCain steals the election OR Americans are a bunch of racists” that it’s really scaring me. I think there is a serious risk of race riots.

Mojave Mark on November 1, 2008 at 10:42 AM

No, no. The strategy will be one that was briefly executed, but aborted in 2004. “Polls showed him winning, but THE MAN moved in on election day and fixed the numbers.”

John Edwards — the man who was destined to be Obama’s running mate but magically disappeared overnight for reasons still unknown to the MSM — yes, that John Edwards was pimping the poll-discrepancy theory in the wee hours of the morning on the day after the election in 2004 where he and Kerry got their asses handed to them.

Just watch. Pollsters, who are a pretty sleazy lot to begin with, have laid the foundation for any acts of hooliganism, any vandalism by unruly youths, we might witness after the election.

I don’t have much confidence in G.W. Bush, but the good news is, it’s the Governors who have the power to bring in the National Guard to quell the hooligans.

Think it through. The Democrat governers will be too scared to quell the unruly youths so they’ll let their cities burn. The Republican governers will bring out the crap cannons and establish law and order.

If I were you, I’d take refuge in a red state. If there is tomfoolery, it’ll be the blue states that crumble.

Well, I for one will have fun fighting the army of aging hippies, and pot smoking moveon hipsters.

Should take about a day to sort out.

Then, a la Ayers, we round them up, force them into camps, where they have to actually perform work for money, until they understand the basic tenets of capitalism.
Then we let them go, to a separate country, that has a 40 foot tall fence between us and them, and see how they do without working people to support them. They can have the coasts (but we reserve California, the entire state, as our own, on account of it being pretty) and we get to have the military. We get to keep the original copies of the Constitution and Declaration of Ind., and they get to keep the art museums and coffee houses, most of the colleges, and all of the natural food supermarkets. Oh yeah, we get all of the guns too.

Who’s with me?

hippie_chucker on November 1, 2008 at 10:58 AM

Wait, so it’s Dick Cheney who will fire the first shot if Obama loses? It won’t be crazed Obamamaniacs starting riots by torching cars and stealing TVs from stores? (In LA, that’s how they express their displeasure and bring about social change, you see.)

I kinda thought it might be Chris Matthews who will start the Second Civil War on Obama’s behalf. Either that, or he’ll just sit behind his desk at MSNBC crying uncontrollably until they drag him away in a straightjacket.

I’m prepared for the coming civil war because I’m bitterly clinging to my Bible gun.

That’s right: I cut out the middle-man and made a gun that shoots Bibles. You’re jealous.

Nothing like what will happen if Obama wins very narrowly making it clear he only won due to the ACORN fraud effect. That civil war will be short and brutal.

Sarkosy’s in France now. The new destination of choice for the left should be Cuba.

Why not? We’re the ones who pay out more in taxes than we receive already…at least in NY anyway. If we’re already subsidizing other states as it is…because you guys have guns? or farms? new yorks got plenty of farms and would have more if they didnt compete with conagra giants in the midwest – ernesto on November 1, 2008 at 11:10 AM

I’ve heard this line of bullshit before…it sounds familiar. OMG…ALPHIE! Is that you, ma petite latrine watcher?
