A cover-up in Plumbergate?

posted at 9:50 am on November 1, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Looks like Ohio has a first-class political scandal brewing over Joe the Plumber.  After Helen Jones-Kelley tried to bluff her way out of her actions to check Joe Wurzelbacher’s records when he became a national story, the employee who conducted the search says that she’s never heard of a “famous person” investigation.  Vanessa Niekamp also says her supervisors lied to her about the investigation, and then asked her to lie about it afterwards:

Vanessa Niekamp said that when she was asked to run a child-support check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher on Oct. 16, she thought it routine. A supervisor told her the man had contacted the state agency about his case.

Niekamp didn’t know she just had checked on “Joe the Plumber,” who was elevated the night before to presidential politics prominence as Republican John McCain’s example in a debate of an average American. …

Director Helen Jones-Kelley said her agency checks people who are “thrust into the public spotlight,” amid suggestions they may have come into money, to see if they owe support or are receiving undeserved public assistance.

Niekamp told The Dispatch she is unfamiliar with the practice of checking on the newly famous. “I’ve never done that before, I don’t know of anybody in my office who does that and I don’t remember anyone ever doing that,” she said today.

The case gets even murkier.  The Dispatch, which has done yeoman work on this story, got the public records surrounding the Wurzelbacher inquiry — but Niekamp’s e-mail wasn’t included.  Nor did the records indicate any redaction or gap, as required by law.  Afterwards, a spokesperson for Governor Ted Strickland acknowledged the omission, saying that Niekamp’s status as a child-welfare agent exempted them from providing her e-mail.

What’s becoming apparent is that Ohio officials have something to hide.  The records-check request came from an assistant deputy director for child support.  When the story went public, the deputy director “literally demanded” Niekamp write the e-mail that would get them off the hook.  The agency’s leadership engaged in a cover-up — and that strongly implies that a crime got committed.

Niekamp told the Dispatch that she’s seen people get fired for unauthorized records checks, and that she herself fired one employee for the violation of public trust.  This has gone beyond just a mere firing.  It now looks as though Helen Jones-Kelley’s staff engaged in an attempt to obstruct justice, and Jones-Kelley’s lie about the Famous People Records Check appears to be part of it.

Keep the pressure on.

I have had it with damn Democrats getting away with everything. This is the kind of crap the left always said Bush and Cheney would do.

Yet only Democrats actually do it.

drjohn on November 1, 2008 at 9:55 AM

Fire her ass. If she and whoever else is involved in this gets away with it, then this really is the beginning of liberals getting away with anything. With the media to cover their tracks, this could really be ugly for “anyone” non-liberal.

Don’t let these leftist operatives get away with this . . . investigate and prosecute. This and the other shenanigans in Ohio could invalidate their election results. Illegal votes violate our constitutional rights by effectively negating or cancelling out our legitimate votes. The putrid smell from that state is its corrupt political machine rotting.

“the deputy director “literally demanded” Niekamp write the e-mail that would get them off the hook. The agency’s leadership engaged in a cover-up — and that strongly implies that a crime got committed.”

Wow, that cover-up will get you.

Look, I don’t know crap about Ohio politics, but it sounds like the governor just covered up for her before an investigation was completed. This reflects negatively on him, not just on her, the actual criminal.

Yes, criminal. She should be charged and either go to prison or plea out, get fired, and have a criminal record for her malfeasance.

I used to have a job like Niekamp’s.

Now my managers were decent and honest to the best of my knowledge. I don’t think they’d do the illegal records check (we were always trained not to do that!) in the first place. I don’t think they’d order me to cover it up.

But I’d laugh if they tried to order me to write a false email to cover things up.

I’d write one and I’d put it in that my supervisor is over my shoulder ordering me to write it, and I’d click send. Then I’d go to the union and/or police.

Period.

“In 2008 when Dear Leader was on the cusp of victory, disbelievers came out in droves to try to deceive the masses. Make an example out of these bureaucratic law breakers !! The Citizens need to see these bureaucrats punished harshly to show Americans that “The System” will not be used for political purposes. This was nothing less than criminal, make these individuals pay for their crimes not the taxpayers of Ohio.

Maxx on November 1, 2008 at 10:19 AM

All very intriguing, and good red meat for the blogs, but is any of this filtering through into the MSM? Is it getting enough coverage in the Ohio press to influence the vote there? Is the local McCain campaign running commercials about this? If someone can reassure me that this is big news in Ohio I’ll be happier.

One of the areas I think the McCain campaign has been lacking is in not publicising Obama’s attempts to crush dissent and investigative journalism. They could have made hay with the “What has Obama got to hide” line of attack.

On a lighter note for a Saturday: 84-year-old vet foils raid on jewller’s!

Worried about her $69,000-a-year job and potential criminal charges, the 15-year state employee said she went to Inspector General Thomas P. Charles on Oct. 24. She has seen employees fired, and dismissed one herself, for illegally accessing personal information in support cases. Niekamp, a registered Republican, said politics played no role in what she told investigators.

It’s about as devious as things can get. I’m betting that Niekamp was chosen to run the investigation precisely because she’s a Republican — the ultimate cats-paw for these sleazebags’ purposes.

FalseProfit on November 1, 2008 at 10:54 AM

Ohio’s Inspector General appears to be a straight shooter, but his power seems to be limited. In examining a previous Ohio scandal, action from both the Governor and both houses was needed to enable Charles’ activities.

Given that Gov. Ted Strickland has made certain statements in favor of Jones-Kelley, I’m sure that the fix is in to tie Charles’ hands.

And where is the ACLU coming to defend Joe? If Joe wasn’t white and supporting McCain, the ACLU would be in Ohio, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would already have had marches on the state capital building. And where all the other liberal “protect our privacy” groups?

At times like this, I recall watching a baseball game in which there were two runners at third base after a rundown. Joe Garagiola was doing the color commentary for the game, and said that you don’t stop to think about who to tag in a case like that; you tag the base, BOTH runners, the third-base coach, the bat boy… SOMEBODY’S gonna be out.

JTP’s lawyer should be following a similar strategy; he should sue everyone from the OH governor down to John and Jane Does working at every state agency who had anything to do with this travesty, as well as the state itself. SOMEBODY’S gonna pay Joe some serious bux. Probably several somebodies.

joe is just one more example of the lefts attempt to control free thought.

So…

Any chance Strickland will be damaged by his statement that nothing improper occurred?

What ever happened to Blackwell? You think he might be up for a rematch in two years? This time without having to carry water for the corrupt Republican predecessor? Or do the Ohio Republicans have someone else to put up as a candidate?
