A cover-up in Plumbergate?

Looks like Ohio has a first-class political scandal brewing over Joe the Plumber.  After Helen Jones-Kelley tried to bluff her way out of her actions to check Joe Wurzelbacher’s records when he became a national story, the employee who conducted the search says that she’s never heard of a “famous person” investigation.  Vanessa Niekamp also says her supervisors lied to her about the investigation, and then asked her to lie about it afterwards:

Vanessa Niekamp said that when she was asked to run a child-support check on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher on Oct. 16, she thought it routine. A supervisor told her the man had contacted the state agency about his case.

Niekamp didn’t know she just had checked on “Joe the Plumber,” who was elevated the night before to presidential politics prominence as Republican John McCain’s example in a debate of an average American. …

Director Helen Jones-Kelley said her agency checks people who are “thrust into the public spotlight,” amid suggestions they may have come into money, to see if they owe support or are receiving undeserved public assistance.

Niekamp told The Dispatch she is unfamiliar with the practice of checking on the newly famous. “I’ve never done that before, I don’t know of anybody in my office who does that and I don’t remember anyone ever doing that,” she said today.

The case gets even murkier.  The Dispatch, which has done yeoman work on this story, got the public records surrounding the Wurzelbacher inquiry — but Niekamp’s e-mail wasn’t included.  Nor did the records indicate any redaction or gap, as required by law.  Afterwards, a spokesperson for Governor Ted Strickland acknowledged the omission, saying that Niekamp’s status as a child-welfare agent exempted them from providing her e-mail.

What’s becoming apparent is that Ohio officials have something to hide.  The records-check request came from an assistant deputy director for child support.  When the story went public, the deputy director “literally demanded” Niekamp write the e-mail that would get them off the hook.  The agency’s leadership engaged in a cover-up — and that strongly implies that a crime got committed.

Niekamp told the Dispatch that she’s seen people get fired for unauthorized records checks, and that she herself fired one employee for the violation of public trust.  This has gone beyond just a mere firing.  It now looks as though Helen Jones-Kelley’s staff engaged in an attempt to obstruct justice, and Jones-Kelley’s lie about the Famous People Records Check appears to be part of it.

It takes a plumber to clean out an obstruction, and Joe is the man for this job. I am thoroughly confounded that this paper is actually conducting serious investigative journalism against dem party higher ups. Must be a full moon or something. Kudos to them. Wonder when the Governor’s email will be disclosed along with the forwards from Obama’s campaign?

There are fairly stringent “fired for retaliation” and “whistle-blower” laws in place. If Niekamp is *ever* fired for ANYthing the rest of her life, she can sue and claim retaliation and guaranteed collect a gazillion dollars from the state, and maybe from the supervisors involved personally. With the amount of publicity this has received, no jury would ever believe that she was fired for just cause even if she was videotaped torturing a kitten at her desk.

I’m kind of surprised there is a paper out there still capable of an investigation.

This on seems simple enough that even novices can do it.

My question is – why hasn’t the governor resigned yet? He’s obviouly betrayed the public trust with his lies.

Wonder if the Obama DOJ is going to do anything about this? Not holding my breath!

When McCain wins, I know he is all bipartisan and such nonsense, but the DOJ needs to be treated to a JTP job. McCain needs to have a Roto-Rooter job done and ASAP. The is no way voter fraud cases should not be fully investigated, and prosecuted. The same goes for this case involving Joe. ACORN needs to be no longer federally funded, and the actions by those in power in OH need to be stopped, or other states will feel free to commit the same type of actions next go round.

Racists

The only reason you are pursuing this is because both Obama and the wonderful Jones-Kelly are black. Racist, lynching, Jim Crow Republicans just want to keep the black man and woman down while they rape and pillage mother earth for their fat-cat oligarch masters. All Jones-Kelly was trying to do was to raise the level of discussion and ensure a proper perspective on the issues raised by the so-called Joe the Plumber (who was a Rethuglican plant).

/sarc

wow, that was easy to write! Just remember that being the right kind of victim with the right kind of politics trumps everything…facts, laws, common sense, etc.

You can bet how this will turn out. Vanessa Niekamp is the designated fall guy. (”She’s a Republican we don’t want around anyway. Let’s kill two birds with one stone.”) The public employee union will not defend her when she is fired either. All sorts of efforts to turn up any dirt on her will be made, rumors will be started about her and the papers will print them without waiting for any verification. The KOS crowd will say she is a lying racist neocon etc. etc. and the Governor will make sure no real investigation goes anywhere. Should by a miracle Jones-Kelly get in any real trouble she will be assured that Obama will pardon her if she keeps her mouth shut once the political coast is clear.

(Not that I have become cynical or anything like that.)

She should be fired first and prosecuted second. Neither one will happen because of all the usual reasons. This country is going down the drain so fast it’s scary.

I hope this is Topic #1 in Ohio this weekend.

Why am I now getting the feeling that its going to be a tie on Tuesday, and then the hurricane hits, dwarfing the 2000 storm?

If Maverick & Goose lose Tuesday, that means a guy nobody ever heard of in 2003 went from a giving pretty speech to the WH in the span of four years.

Obama’s historic significance might end up being the way in which he lowered the bar for would-be presidents all over the country. Within one or two cycles, youre going to see as-yet-unknown gabllionaire business people who have never held any elective office before running straight for the WH, leapfrogging Congress or state-level elective office. And that’s when the fun really starts. NYC’s soon-to-be 3rd term Mayor Bloomberg is an early-model version of this coming candidate type.

However, if Obama can go from geek to chic in 4 years,
Gov Palin, if she plays her many cards the right way, can go from being Governor/VP nominee to the WH in the same time frame as Obama.

Ross Perot of course pioneered this concept in 1992.

Sherrod Brown’s wife (State of Ohio U.S. Senator) said the state should look into Joe the Plumber’s records on Bill Maher show Friday night.

They did not introduce her as Sherrod Brown’s wife but that was her.

Now let’s see some heads roll!

OneGyT on November 1, 2008 at 9:54 PM

If they let her, him and others get away with this I know there will be people heading to Ohio to correct the problems there. There already is a “Civilian National Security Force” and it is backed by the 2nd amendment. No extra government funded needed!

Behold the face you will confront when you show up at the Department of Health with your internally bleeding child. Enjoy the public health announcements about who’s running in the district and what great things they have done for you while your poor child bleeds out. Now fill out the form completely or move to the back of the line!
