Team McCain conference call: polling

With a mere four days left, the polls have begun to tighten in the presidential race. Pennsylvania appears within the margin of error, and a last-minute surprise could turn the race in McCain’s favor — or so they would like to think. Team McCain held a press conference today with campaign leaders Rick Davis, pollster Bill McInturff, Mike DuHaime and Christian Ferry to discuss the latest in national and state polling.
Davis says we’re witnessing one of the greatest comebacks in political history, or at least since McCain won the primaries. Crowds are huge, and energy is high. Sarah Palin is electrifying crowds and bringing people back into the game. They feel they have the momentum, increasing polling in every battleground state over the past week, and have gotten past the effect of the financial collapse.
Team McCain says they have Iowa as a dead heat, and Obama seems to confirm that. He’s going back to Iowa over the weekend. If Iowa was not in play, Obama wouldn’t bother. Team McCain seems to believe that more than a few Obama states may be heading back into play.
McInturff says that intensity is increasing among core Republican coalitions, and that has brought a narrowing of the gap in party identification. He predicts a final gap of 3-5 points. McCain has always run ahead of party ID, and they see this as a big plus. He also sees Obama’s numbers dropping in battleground states, and thinks Obama will have a tough time getting to 50%.
Turnout models show a big response from Republicans as well as Democrats. He thinks this will be closer to 2004 than 2000, and it may improve even more over the weekend. McInturff says that this will be a close election, but that McCain is very much in it.
On the GOTV efforts, they say that they have spent more money on turnout in the past two months than any other election. The RNC’s ability to raise money has given the GOP parity on GOTV and in advertising. Their turnout efforts grow week-on-week, and may be the most underreported aspect of the campaign. The microtargeting, VOIP efforts, and analytical models continues to improve the GOTV efforts. They’ve made 5.3 million targeted calls and doorknocks in the past week, and 1.3 million yesterday, to persuadable voters, and 24 million to date. That’s a major improvement over 2004 and 2006, and they expect to make 17 million more in the next 72 hours.
On absentee and early voting, they are seeing big increases in the number, but not much different in the party-ID gap. In Florida, McCain has an advantage in the total number of both. Nevada has about the same breakout as it did in 2004. Pennsylvania gave the GOP a lead on absentee ballots, 56-44, and younger voters are in roughly the same proportion as they had been before. New Democratic registrants this year actually make up a somewhat lower proportion of early voters in PA.
They polled the viewers of the Obamamercial to see whether it convinced people to vote for him. They claim that the “less likelies” slightly outpolled the “more likelies”. Team McCain also noted that the money they spent on that infomercial would have bought a week’s worth of advertising in all of the battleground states.
The McCain campaign says they will outspend Obama over the next 72 hours by $10 million. If so, that would be a remarkable change.

It would be nice to see a McCain commercial since I am inindated with DNC 527 commercials here.

Grr that might be true considering they have spent next to nothing for years now.
The tiny amount they have spent is drowned out by the multi millions the dems are pouring in via ACORN, Moveon and every other GOTV effort.

I voted yesterday in NC, the electronic voting was awesome.
Polls were really busy, hung around and only saw a few bumper stickers (evenly divided), this is not the year for bumper stickers.
couple of black women voting with their kids (imagine for Obama), it was still good to see them taking their kids in.
I feel good, because every one is playing this close to the vest (few yard signs, etc) I suspect they are Republicans not wanting to “offend” the one and their followers.
How sweet to listen to the pundits on Wed., crying in complete hysteria…poor Biden, he will be the scape-goat. And we, once again, will be the “racists”…how sweet it is.

I’ve been hearing for the last few days about Iowa, and to a lesser extent, PA, I think Greta has been hitting on that. Why are they spending so much time and money in those places if it’s over.
I’m caught by a couple of things, and Ed hits on one of them here, also just stated by Rush yet again; Don’t believe the polls, as they are problematic at best. I’ve been watching the AOL straw poll for a few days now, and while I KNOW it’s only for fun and not reliable in the least, they also police it fairly well to avoid gaming it by Freepers or Kossacks. And they have consistently shown runaway support for McCain, in excess of ‘84 at some times. While I know that will (probably) not happen, there does seem to be a very big disconnect going on there somewhere.
The second thing I’ve noted the last few days is during campaign stops the level of cheering from the crowds. Granted, I know most of these are ‘friendly’ audiences, and the appearances are intended to motivate the base, etc. But while Obama gets the screams and cheering, McCain seems to get more, especially when he starts his “stand and fight” lines. And Palin, my goodness, it’s like a Hannah Montana concert, the folks are crazy-fired-up!
Is it even remotely possible that the general electorate is completely fed up and disgusted by the slobbering of the media, being called racists (apparently no matter what you do)? I’ve never seen ordinary ‘Joes’ like Joe the Plumber become such an instant overnight sensation in a national campaign.
In some ways, I’ll be so glad on Wed morning, assuming we don’t have a Florida 2000 situation.

It has been a very tough struggle with my grass roots effort to change people from Obama to McCain in my office. I did however mange to change one guy who always votes Democrat, when I explained the 95% Tax Cut Illusion, and the 401K drool of the congress.
One guy here already has voter remorse over voting Obama – I missed the opportunity with him, and now he regrets it big time.

Early voting needs to be dumped in the dust bin of history.

I completely believe everything in this post.
Absolutely McCain has a bigger GOTV operation.
And Iowa and Pennsylvania are definitely dead even.
I don’t need evidence that “crowds are getting bigger” because there is zero chance that the campaign manager for McCain’s campaign would be wildly overstating enthusiasm for his side.

bopbottle on October 31, 2008 at 12:31 PM
But isn’t that how McCain campaigns? And hasn’t Obama shown himself not to be a closer?
I think this fits a pattern, not of “finally learning”, but of McCain hitting his stride and closing like any true champion.
Jerry West always wanted the ball in his hands in the closing seconds because he knew he could win the game…McCain/Palin have the ball in the closing seconds and they know they can win.
At Obama’ loss they will point to Biden, his stupid 30 minute commercial, and that conservatives are racists.
But they won’t look at the fact that Obama is an empty suit, with no experience…
Remember this fact…If Obama wins, and serves out his 4 years, that will be the longest he has ever held a job.

Are your Democrat friends fairly moderate, or are the on the far left? If they’re half-way normal people, you might want to make them aware that Obama’s business associate and friend Bill Ayers dedicated a book (”Prairie Fire”) to Sirhan Sirhan.
From what I hear, this didn’t make a very good impression on Democrat strategist/pundit Pat Caddell when he heard about it…but he’s a normal guy.

This is when the trolls start coming out in force.
Everyone knows that this is the push to the final…any wavering on the candidacy will be taken as a troll, a liberal trying to sway the vote.
Every Republican will know that the die has been cast, any problem they have with McCain is moot. Any problem with Palin is of no consequence…victory is in sight, and any deviation from the finish line is a partisan attack on our conservative drive.
If you don’t like McCain or Palin, now is the time to sit back and let history play out…this site if for the final push for victory, and democrat defeat.
Notice: Any attempt to persuade anything but a Republican victory will be treated as “Conservative Treason”…be prepared to be humiliated, spat upon, embarrassed for your weak attempt at changing history.
The gloves are off for the final round…we are prepared to defend, in any way we can, or destiny.

Lim, I have to fly on Nov. 5th. Airports are always interesting to watch masses in, but especially on a day like this.
In 2000 I was in a fancy hotel in Chicaco, wasted the entire night switching channels, took a cold shower, and went to work on Wedn. morning. Many business trips, observing all kinds of people, for and against Bush/Gore, followed.
In 2004 I stayed up all night, only to see the Kerry clan cry the next morning. Maybe this year will be an all-nighter too. I sure hope that it won’t be.

If it is in the cards that Obama wins, I just hope it’s an electoral win and McCain takes the popular vote. I want to watch as the left ties itself in knots explaining how it is OK for Obama but not for Bush.

Well, if I am any indication, the Republicans are doing a ton better than they did in 2004. I was a newly registered voter in Pennsylvania in 2004, and I got nothing from Bush-Cheney or the RNC. Three times Bush was in the vicinity of my home and I was never notified. I never got a single GOTV phone call. This year I have received both emails and phone calls every time McCain and Palin have appeared nearby. I received an absentee ballot application from the Pennsylvania Republican Party and I have already received two phone calls from them. I got a McCain-Palin bumper sticker in the mail and a notice of where to pick up a yard sign.
My husband is a registered Democrat and supported Obama in the primary. He receives about 5 emails a day from the Obama campaign, and has gotten one robocall from Ed Rendell, but that’s it. Nothing in the mail. No absentee ballot application. And the local Obama campaign is sending out desperation emails at 3 a.m. begging for volunteers and even asking people to donate food and water for the campaign office.
I think Obama’s touted ground game is smoke and mirrors. They didn’t have a decent one in PA in the primary. There is a lot of talk about serious tension between the Obama camp and Ed Rendell’s organization. It’s not clear that Obama is paying the street money in Philly.
Republicans are also running very strong campaigns for state attorney general and treasurer, and the House races in key areas are getting a lot of attention. I think Republican turnout in PA is going to be much higher than it was in 2004.

Are You Going to Help?
—Gabriel Malor
There’s still time to help elect John McCain and Sarah Palin. This past weekend, I made phone calls through the volunteer online phone bank. I admit, I was uncomfortable cold-calling complete strangers on a Sunday afternoon. But it was ultimately a rewarding experience. There were people who still claimed to be undecided. There were also several Republicans who sounded like they needed a little encouragement to go to the polls. I like to think I made a difference.
In the middle of the afternoon, I blegged for advice because I was having a hard time talking to answering machines. As I expected, the wisdom of crowds made things much easier.
Please consider making phone calls on behalf of McCain/Palin 2008 in the next few days. The process is very easy. Sign up at the top link above (I’m fairly certain you don’t even have to use a real email addy if you don’t want to get GOP emails) and within minutes the website will provide you with names, locations, phone numbers and scripts. (I think the hours are from 9am to 9pm Eastern.)
You generally get to choose the state you’d like to make calls to, so if you have free long distance like me, you can help out with some of the battleground states. My suggestions are Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
I’m tucking some advice from last weekend under the fold. Read it first and then get calling. I challenge each of you to make at least twenty phone calls. It won’t take that long and it may make a difference on Tuesday. I’m going to be calling again this weekend too.
Later: I want to emphasize that you can make calls from the comfort of your own home. This is so easy to do, there’s just no excuse for not helping.

I hear ya, Cliff. Johnny Mac doesn’t have to win NH. A final close (2-3% gap)is enough to be a weathervane to indicate that PA, VA, FL, OH will be a tooth and nail fight.
If NH goes solidly blue, as the polls indicate, then that weathervane will be pointing left.

You are correct about NC not having the president on the straight ticket.
But they have plenty of warnings and checks and balances to make sure you don’t miss that important vote.
After voting straight ticket, it then goes page by page and highlights your vote and where you didn’t vote (like some non-partisan)…it was the best voting procedure I have ever experienced. The odds of making a mistake are minimal, and people are there to assist if you did make a mistake.

just ask if people would like to share their email so the campaign can send info. if they say no, say something like “I don’t like handing out my email either” to keep the friendly connection with them

Makes sense. I’ll crank out some calls here in Colorado. Should be fun.
Thanks!

Obama’s been running ads heavily in TX the whole time. He’s buying ads in AZ to freak out people like allahpundit who think it means something. Obama’s run ads nonstop in AL, where the polls have McCain up by 20.
The guy has unlimited access to George Soros and Richard Branson’s bank accounts, so he can run tons of TV ads in places where it won’t do any good as psyops. Hey, it’s good for the stations in those red states to get the huge infusion of Obama/Soros/Bransondollars.
Obama has ads on the Laura Ingraham and Tammy Bruce radio shows here in Las Vegas, for God’s sake. He ain’t picking up voters there, let me tell you. But I’m glad he’s keeping Tammy Bruce on the air here with his sponsorship.
Tammy’s been the most stalwart radio host for McCain this whole season….she’s the original PUMA and still has the PUMA fire.
I still get emails from the AL GOP, and they are so confident that they are sending everybody to FL and NC for GOTV. Obama’s huge ad buys aint’ gonna bring him TX and AL; worrying about them is stupid, frankly.

Iowa:
-Democraps have taken over governorship and statehouse in last 8 years!
-Passed no smoking in bars and restuarants, any public place!
-Liberal News orgs. have race approx 59-35 0B0mber!
-0B0mber is in des Moines liberal mecca today.
-Palin in Dubuque Mon river city on the border!
-Bush lost the state by like 5000 and didn’t expose voter fraud or cry and whine!
- Why would 0Bomber and Palin be here in 59-35 state?
- They wouldn’t! Not saying Palin will win.
-The liberal dem college towns are tough to over come, but the media is out and out lying.
-I know lots of folks who have never voted or usually vote Dem who have already voted for Sarah! I live in very consevative northwest.

In my neck of the Florida woods (Cape Coral), McCain signs have outnumbered the “others” by a wide margin. I take a granddaughter to school once or twice a week and in the last few days, I have noticed a BIG increase in McCain signs and a tiny increase in “others”. Obama will lose 50 of 50 on a normal day. Bad day and he’ll lose DC too. Good day and he’ll win Illinois.
