Obamamercial: A flop with critics, ratings
posted at 8:55 am on October 31, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

When one program dominates its time slot by simulcasting on five different networks, the producers obviously intend on making it must-see TV. Barack Obama’s infomercial fell far short. Despite its multiple platforms, it could only garner 21.7% of the households in the US. The debates drew far more:
The combined overall household rating for Senator Barack Obama’s Wednesday night infomercial, in the top 56 local television markets where Nielsen maintains electronic TV meters, was 21.7.
Obama’s simulcast is the first to be aired by a presidential candidate since Ross Perot ran a political telecast on the eve of Election Day in 1996. That program was watched by 16.8% of all households nationwide. …
In comparison, the final debate between the two presidential candidates received a 38.3 household rating in the top 56 local TV markets. The candidates’ first debate on September 26 received a 34.7 household rating in the top 55 markets; their second debate, on October 7, received a 42.0 household rating in those markets.
The Ross Perot comparison is interesting. Perot made his famously policy-driven case, complete with pie charts, to 16.8% of the nation. On Election Day, he won 8.6% of the popular vote. Obama will win more than 22% of the popular vote, but one can take a lesson from this: the entire nation is not enthralled with The One. As I predicted before the Obamamercial, only the true believers bothered to watch it.
And they needed Prozac by the time it ended. The New York Post had infomercial experts rate the presentation, and they gave it a big thumbs down. Apparently, it was Mourning in America:
Two leading infomercial stars agree: Barack Obama’s half-hour self-promotion last night was a flop.
“I don’t see enough smiling. Doom and gloom totally,” said Anthony Sullivan, one of the biggest names in infomercial history.
“I feel depressed right now,” added Sullivan, an Englishman famous for his infomercials touting the Swivel Sweeper and Smart Chopper. The only thing saving Obama, Sullivan said, was when the candidate appeared live at the end speaking at a rally in Florida. …
He and AJ Khubani, who has produced infomercials for 25 years, said Obama also fell short of offering solutions to the dire problems he laid out.
“I didn’t see a payoff. Classic infomercial is you show the before and you show the after. I didn’t see the music or the crashing waves of the Pacific,” Sullivan said.
Khubani told the Post that infomercials should spend more time on the solution and less on the problem. In other words, don’t talk about belly flab for 25 minutes and then talk about the Tummy Stretcher for 5. The Obamamercial gave viewers tons of gloom and doom, with people talking about the tough economy (from their own houses and driving their own cars) to such an extent that the solution — Obama — hardly seems appropriate to the task involved.
The ratings will be what depresses Team Obama, though. Despite having a near-monopoly on broadcast television and no particularly compelling competition, only one-fifth of the nation bothered to watch. That doesn’t exactly scream enthusiasm, and the crashing waves of a landslide may just be imaginary.
Update: A couple of points from the comments. First, Perot scored only a little over 8% in 1996; I originally used his 1992 popular-vote percentage of 19%, which I’ve changed. Second, several commenters have insisted that 21% is a good ratings share, which would be true of a show aired on one broadcast network — not five. It’s also true of a competition with dozens of entrants, not of an essentially two-horse race.
Like I said, the only people who would be inclined to watch a 30-minute infomercial on Obama would be the Obamanauts, and a 21% rating bears that out. Almost 80% of television viewers took a pass on Obama, even for 30 minutes. Those are not good numbers, especially for prime time.

Nielsen has national people meters and I’m curious as to why they didn’t use that number instead? Could it have been lower and they decided the podunks in smaller markets shouldn’t matter?
However I work in advertising research and look at ratings daily, a 21.7 is a great rating (for one network). Some of the most popular shows like American Idol only get in the 20’s range.

It was perfectly matched up with the final ride of Arthur’s knights. The various pieces from Wagner were also brilliantly matched up, particularly for the opening scenes of the motion picture.
Some years later, James Horner composed a variation of O Fortuna to accompany the final assault sequence on Ft. Wagner after Col. Shaw had been shot and killed in the motion picture Glory. It, too was a perfect piece of music for the action on the screen.

Ed,
A ratings wizard, you are not. The 21.7 HH rating almost, but not quite, tied the combined HH rating of CBS, NBC, and FOX during the Wednesday 8:00-8:30 half hour the Wednesday prior. Give or take, Obama pretty much attracted the same number of TV viewers as otherwise would be watching those networks.
A rousing success? No. As you pointed out, the Presidential debates (which aired on all broadcast networks, including ABC) absolutely crushed the Obama infomercial in the ratings. But when you look at it as a COMMERCIAL rather than a TV program, I’d say Obama did fairly well. Had Obama run a 30 second spot during the Wednesday program, he would have reached the same basic number of viewers, but probably wouldn’t have gotten their attention due to channel surfing and so forth. Instead, he got roughly the same number of people to give him their undivided attention for 30 minutes.
Most unfortunately for Obama, he blew his opportunity to “close the deal” with that infomercial. It was bad. Want proof? Neither Kos nor Huffington spent much time talking about how inspirational it was. Rather, they just tried to defend the ratings.

We don’t even know if these Nielsen ratings are correct. O’Reilly pointed out last night that according to recent Nielsen ratings, more households watched O’Reilly than people.
He had some more off the wall ratings statistics about Campbell Brown at CNN and MSNBC. Can’t remember the details, except that CNN was waaaaay too low while MSNBC was waaaay too high.

Dorvillian on October 31, 2008 at 10:10 AM
Ed,
Another update is required, because it’s even a worse ratings flop when you take a real close look at the numbers.
1.) Highest rated market: Baltimore. Which means a bunch of DC insiders were glued to the screen (N. Virginia list close to the top, too)
2.) 2nd highest rated market: Philly.
3.) 3rd highest rated market: West Palm Beach-Florida.
4.) 5 of the highest rated markets were in Florida.
5.) None of the top 10 Markets were west of the Mississippi. L.A. (2nd largest market) was #28, San Fran # 37 and Portland, OR was dead last.
So, if FOX had not run the infomercial prior to the finishing of WS Game 5 the ratings would have been so. much. worse. Obviously, people in Philly & Florida had their TVs set while they were making nachos.

With so much of the nation on cable, it would be easy to determine a more accurate rating then the nielsen. Yes, I know cable doesn’t reach a lot of rural…but enough so could balance with some rural “nielsen”. The cable is the most accurate, they can tell how many sets for how long. I switched and watched maybe 5 minutes total (I was hoping for a good deal on Ginzu knives, but he pulled the offer apparently).

The only good thing about an Obama victory (if it happens, God forbid), is the massive disillusionment with Obama that his mindless followers will inevitably experience soon afterwards. This corrupt, narcissistic politician isn’t going to change the world; he’s just going to do more of what he did in Chicago — waste a lot of other people’s money and leave things in worse shape than when he started.

tomas on October 31, 2008 at 10:59 AM
McCain will give a $5K tax credit so we can make our own decision to get our own insurance. Or, you can have nationalized health care with Obama which will cause long waiting periods and second-class care.

Have you seen an infomerical? If you have then you should know that these people have no ideal what good television is. I want Obama’s infomercial to be a flop as much as the next guy, but using infomerical stars as sources isn’t just getting in bed with the devil. It’s an orgy, I’m talking Hitler in a neglige.
DFCtomm on October 31, 2008 at 11:05 AM
I love the previous comment “Barrack Obama Politics for Dummies.”
I think the 22% number reflects the number of Obamatrons out there. We’re talking about true believers folks. That’s more than one in five and that’s a lot.
If the black community hadn’t been involved in autogenocide for the last four decades this election wouldn’t even be close. Half of black Americans conceived are killed before their first birthday. The Jews didn’t vote for Hitler and then line up willingly to be murdered in the 40’s but that’s just what we see with the black American parents who have the next generation murdered in abortuaries. They then vote for the very same people overseeing the ethnic cleansing. I just don’t get it.
I actually feel some hope now for this election. I think it will come down to how successful ACORN’s voter fraud program is.
Mojave Mark on October 31, 2008 at 11:05 AM
What scares me is that the polls really aren’t tightening that much — especially not at the state level.

okonkolo on October 31, 2008 at 11:10 AM
One thing is for sure in America. A child with cancer and without health insurance is never NOT treated. Same goes with anyone else. What happens is that the person is treated and the finances are worked out later. People usually pay what they can. Look at all the illegal immigrants who are receiving health care. This is a great country. There is no constitutional right to health care. Freedom? Yes.
carbon_footprint on October 31, 2008 at 11:12 AM
I think Obama is making a big mistake by declaring victory so early. This might have a negative psychological when people actually show up at the polls.
Plus…he’s doing some petty, egotistical stuff that candidates don’t usually do until after the election like kicking reporters off of his plane for the crime of working for a paper that endorsed McCain.
Goodeye_Closed on October 31, 2008 at 11:16 AM
It won’t be successful. Fortunately, McCain will garner more votes that ACORN’s efforts can offset. Moreover, now that ACORN has been exposed for its fraud – and linked to the Obama campaign – the only ones who will make a case for Republican election fraud wih a straight face will be the Code Pink Moonbats.

I had a heart attack back in 2000 when I was 50. Stent was placed in…. left a job went to another and another insurance carrier… I have a preexisting condition… I waited 6 months and got coverage… to say preexisting conditions can’t get coverages is wrong. in addition, states like MN have a risk pool ( similar to what McCain wants to do)… it’s not insurmountable. Certainly not justifiable to make us all pay for it.

The infomercial was a replay of BHO’s crazy German speech, basically. I’m just surprised that he didn’t buy time on foreign channels.

The only local major network affiliate here that aired it was CBS.
Now of that 21 or so percent, how many were the hypnotized and how many were the curious?
It was a flop!

Limey, Oh I agree with you….. but the point I was making is that with Obama the systems that are out there would EXPAND. I was simply pointing out to the other commenter that the safety nets are already out there. hell, I don’t want to pay for anyone’s coverage but my own, either. Ayn Rand said it best ” I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine.” To the best I can, I try to live that. I, in no way, advocate the system I described. I just said it ’s already there and I say now that we don’t need anymore.
