Obamamercial: A flop with critics, ratings

When one program dominates its time slot by simulcasting on five different networks, the producers obviously intend on making it must-see TV. Barack Obama’s infomercial fell far short. Despite its multiple platforms, it could only garner 21.7% of the households in the US. The debates drew far more:
The combined overall household rating for Senator Barack Obama’s Wednesday night infomercial, in the top 56 local television markets where Nielsen maintains electronic TV meters, was 21.7.
Obama’s simulcast is the first to be aired by a presidential candidate since Ross Perot ran a political telecast on the eve of Election Day in 1996. That program was watched by 16.8% of all households nationwide. …
In comparison, the final debate between the two presidential candidates received a 38.3 household rating in the top 56 local TV markets. The candidates’ first debate on September 26 received a 34.7 household rating in the top 55 markets; their second debate, on October 7, received a 42.0 household rating in those markets.
The Ross Perot comparison is interesting. Perot made his famously policy-driven case, complete with pie charts, to 16.8% of the nation. On Election Day, he won 8.6% of the popular vote. Obama will win more than 22% of the popular vote, but one can take a lesson from this: the entire nation is not enthralled with The One. As I predicted before the Obamamercial, only the true believers bothered to watch it.
And they needed Prozac by the time it ended. The New York Post had infomercial experts rate the presentation, and they gave it a big thumbs down. Apparently, it was Mourning in America:
Two leading infomercial stars agree: Barack Obama’s half-hour self-promotion last night was a flop.
“I don’t see enough smiling. Doom and gloom totally,” said Anthony Sullivan, one of the biggest names in infomercial history.
“I feel depressed right now,” added Sullivan, an Englishman famous for his infomercials touting the Swivel Sweeper and Smart Chopper. The only thing saving Obama, Sullivan said, was when the candidate appeared live at the end speaking at a rally in Florida. …
He and AJ Khubani, who has produced infomercials for 25 years, said Obama also fell short of offering solutions to the dire problems he laid out.
“I didn’t see a payoff. Classic infomercial is you show the before and you show the after. I didn’t see the music or the crashing waves of the Pacific,” Sullivan said.
Khubani told the Post that infomercials should spend more time on the solution and less on the problem. In other words, don’t talk about belly flab for 25 minutes and then talk about the Tummy Stretcher for 5. The Obamamercial gave viewers tons of gloom and doom, with people talking about the tough economy (from their own houses and driving their own cars) to such an extent that the solution — Obama — hardly seems appropriate to the task involved.
The ratings will be what depresses Team Obama, though. Despite having a near-monopoly on broadcast television and no particularly compelling competition, only one-fifth of the nation bothered to watch. That doesn’t exactly scream enthusiasm, and the crashing waves of a landslide may just be imaginary.
Update: A couple of points from the comments. First, Perot scored only a little over 8% in 1996; I originally used his 1992 popular-vote percentage of 19%, which I’ve changed. Second, several commenters have insisted that 21% is a good ratings share, which would be true of a show aired on one broadcast network — not five. It’s also true of a competition with dozens of entrants, not of an essentially two-horse race.
Like I said, the only people who would be inclined to watch a 30-minute infomercial on Obama would be the Obamanauts, and a 21% rating bears that out. Almost 80% of television viewers took a pass on Obama, even for 30 minutes. Those are not good numbers, especially for prime time.

This may be one of the most ill-informed post I have seen in a long time.
Twenty years ago I worked with two individuals who had heart attacks when middle aged.
One jogged everyday, ate well, and NEVER smoked. Heart attack at the age of 42.
The second was such an avid runner that he had fruit juice and an apple for lunch, then ran two miles on his lunch break. Then 5 miles every evening. He had his heart attack at the age of 51. He never smoked, didn’t drink alcohol, and never ate beef.
A number of pro athletes, and even high school athletes, in prime condition, have had heart attacks.
Best you educate yourself regarding pre-exisiting but undiagnosed conditions. You could be next.

The question is how far are you willing to go? There is already a great deal of societal pressure, and still many people don’t lead “healthy” lives. Would you be willing to mandate an exercise regime? Would you punish those who don’t meet you’re standard?

First, smart ass, I don’t eat things that clog my arteries… I was a college level athlete and played sports and have been active all my life. I maintain my USMC philosophy and can still wear my dress blues. Second, I haven’t taken dime one from any of you and have been extremely proactive in staying fit , so I would NEVER be a burden on society. Thirdly, I have been stating in this post consistently that I don’t support funding universal health care. Just because you have a preexisting condition doesn’t mean you can’t reverse it and shouldn’t try. Lastly , and most importantly, you don’t me and you don’t know my life…. you’re comments were offensive, ill informed and arrogant.

This whole TV commercial is just more Elitist mentality from the leftwing loonies. The arrogance that they are somehow more important than life is typical. A presidential debate is an important TV spot, however any one candidates “”Blah-blah-blaH”" is not, regardless of it’s author. It’s just no surprise that it’s an ultra left democrat who has done it.
tx2654 on October 31, 2008 at 12:43 PM
Didn’t Perot get 19.6% of the popular vote in a three way race in 1992? That was when he first aired his infomercials. The second race, in 1996, was close to 8%.

So the ratings share of Obama’s infomercial was slightly more PER network than their own regular news?
The only good thing is that it wasted MILLIONS of Obama’s credit-card fraud generated dollars.
Ladies and Gentlemen, OBAMA is NOT the one for us at this time. Let him run again in four years and see if he has ANY accomplishments we can point to.
Why promote someone, when they’ve done NOTHING to deserve it?

Wow. Not only was the Obamamercial a boring flop, even commenting on the boring flop is so boring folks would rather rant about healthy eating.
As for the “calloused healthy 25 year old” leetpriest, he’s just a self absorbed idiot. Exactly the audience Obama appeals to.
Could not have said it better myself. How about a little compassion instead of the heavy helpings of prejudice? It would be more wise to expand your USMC philosophy with “Be kind to everyone you meet because every one is fighting some kind heroic battle.”

I’ve nothing to lighten up about and am not egocentric. But I will fight back when lies and innuendo abound. Unless I am wrong, the comment I responded to was personal and directed to me. save your pseudo psychological comment for those in need. Oh, I am probably one of the most quiet, levelheaded persons you could meet. but there’s the rub… you have to meet me first, don’t assume anything on a thread, fair enough? Have a great weekend , by the way.

And…. Obama gains 3 points in Gallup on the first full day of polling since the infomercial aired. Flop indeed. This reminds me a lot of Ed’s analysis on how Obama probably regrets not accepting public financing due to lackluster fundraising.

Goodeye_Closed on October 31, 2008 at 1:55 PM
Your analysis is all wrong and misleading, pretty much like everything else around here, so it’s not surprising.
But the Presidential Debates were simulcast on multiple networks that included CNN and FNC. Furthermore, CNN and FNC ran their showings of the debate live on the West Coast, and repeated it again three hours later. By the time the commercial ran for the west coast, it had already been promulgated on the West Coast and by the news casts.

I didn’t post that. You might want to review your insurance for vision coverage.

Admittedly, I didn’t read all of these posts so maybe I’m wrong for asking but why would an insurance company cover a peexisting condition? shouldn’t you have insurance before the condition exists?

I’ve found a line of reasoning that actually gets through to some bone head liberals. I get them talking about how corrupt and dangerous Chicago is. I point out that statistically you are safer in Baghdad than you are in Chicago. Then I simply ask them how much better off Chicago is having had Mr. Hope and Change around. I ask them “If he can’t even fix his home town, how is he going to fix an entire country?”.
Gets ‘em every time.

MNDavenotPC on October 31, 2008 at 5:17 PM
Um….
Three of the biggest preventable health problems are
1. Alcoholism-Do you advocate prohibition? or are you more inclined to go “Islamic” on those who drink, even in moderation?
2. Drug Abuse-Perhaps it would save all of us billions of dollars every year if we just flat out execute anyone using drugs that are not prescribed to them by a doctor or those “recreational drugs”. You are aware of the fact that smoking Marijuana is much more damaging to the lungs then tobacco smoke, right? And don’t give me that “people don’t smoke pot all the time like cigarette smokers-I have seen too many who do to know better.
3. STD’s and AIDS-I am sure you would agree that these cost billions of dollars to treat yearly and they would be so easy to stop. So I am sure you would agree that anyone who is having sex outside the bonds of marriage should be denied all medical attention, especially those who engage in sodomy which is one of the primary ways to transmit AIDS.
Oh, let us not forget those who injure themselves participating in sports. Sports injuries cost our insurance companies millions every year-from broken bones to torn ACL’s to stitches and broken teeth to tennis elbow etc. I am sure you would agree that this kind of risky behavior should not be covered by insurance. These people chose to do something that injured themselves, they should pay for it out of their own pocket.
Another thing. Vegetarianism. In the department I work in the person who has been the sickest and has cost our health insurance the most is our resident Vegetarian. In fact he had to be taken to the emergency room and given over 100 pints of blood because of massive internal bleeding. Why was he bleeding internally? Because his diet had so little iron in it his blood started to break down. Why should I have to pay higher premiums for him to eat his “healthy diet”, hmmmm?
Nahanni on October 31, 2008 at 5:23 PM
and, might I add, he got those numbers appearing right before the world series game. Which means we should be looking at the number of viewers for the world series as well and deduct those or half them for the “interest” value as opposed to people who might have just had it on the channel because they were unaware the game was delayed and left it there.
Then there is the TIVO factor. Imagine how many people were TIVO’ing the world series and ended up with the first 30 minutes being Obama (and now they are cursing him).

Well, my son came home yesterday and told me that his Government and Economics teacher forced the class to watch Obama’s infomercial. The guy is a die hard Obama supporter and is continually praising Obama and criticizing McCain.
that was it for me,, I called and talked to him today over his lunch. I was respectful but firm,,, I ask if he had shown any of McCain’s campaign commercials. He said “No, but that was because McCain hasn’t aired any 30 minute ones.” Well, I let the guy know exactly where I was coming from,,, I told him that McCain certainly has been making commercials and he could find them all over YouTube,,, they’re only about 30 seconds long and he could easily fit 20 or more in a 30 minute period. I explained further my concern when a teacher decides to play a campaign commercial for a particular candidate, especially a 30 minute one, to his students without giving the other side. I explained that any story sounds good until you hear the other side. I told him I didn’t care what his political persuasion was, but those students are a captive audience and they have choice about being there. he got a little defensive and said he always tries to give the other side,, and stated he told the kids that Obama was able to do this commercial because “Obama was getting so many more donations ,, well over McCain, that McCain wasn’t getting as many donations, Obama had a lot more money to spend”
After saying a quiet “Thank you God.” I told him I was glad he brought that up. I asked if he had bothered to mention to his students the controversy surrounding a lot of those donations,, the foreign money trails, the fraudulent credit card donations, etc,, and of course,, he said “No.”
Well, I posted long here,, I spent a good 10 minutes educating this guy,,,, He was a little defensive,, I think mostly he was in shock that a parent would find this unacceptable. I ended with telling him my son respected him, likes the class and that I know he has thus far been getting a good grade. (just to let him know I knew where my son’s grade level was up until this phone call)
I would not be surprised if this has happened in other cassrooms.
JellyToast on October 31, 2008 at 6:51 PM
Well, given the supposed polling boost (2%), I would say the money was well spent. Although I personally would have aired it on the evening of November 3, given the short lived nature of these polling boosts.
And I’d say that a 21-22% share (1 in five viewers) was good, even if spread across a number of channels. It’s how many you reached, not now many ways you tried to reach them. And given that Obama has money to burn right now…

Anyone consider the possibility that the informercial on all major channels was merely a way to slush money back to the networks who are needed to do heavy lifting for Obama through election day?
I would not call it a flop.
I call it payback
Obama is the politician who took enough hard left positions early in his career to cement his position with the hard left. Then, he stayed in the background pretending to be all things to all people
I imagine his prime time slots helped the sliding networks with the bottom line. His enormous campaign fund goes mainly to purchase media, or as entagor says, it goes to buy media.
Clever, what?
Since Obama has made a strategy of presnting a decaying America as part of his push for ‘change’, a decaying Aerica was his theme. If the public did not change their opinions, Obama did quite well. His real target was the networks
His handlers know how to move money in, and out, a magical shell game before your very eyes, somewhat legal and authentically nasty
I do not think Obama would give any hard solutions withing days of the election when the smallest facts are already killing him
A wise person recently posted the possibility that the European tour, bigger than his American tour, which sucked up to Europeans at the expense of Americans, was merely a fund raiser for a campaign that had figured out pre paid VISAs and unautheticated charges could expand his fund raising boundaries beyond our borders
Oh for the days fo the Clintons. We did not know what we had back then. The Clintons ran as Americans
