Halloween thread: What were the scariest movies?

While I’m sitting here handing out candy to all the little (and not so little) trick-or-treaters, one reader suggested an open thread on the scariest movies.  I’m not a big fan of the horror genre, but I have my favorites, and I imagine you do as well.  Here are the top frights I’ve gotten from Hollywood, aside from the industry’s politics:

  • Poltergeist – Probably the most frightened I ever got from a movie, but that’s partly from how I saw it.  I woke up in the middle of the night having fallen asleep in front of the TV, and this movie had just begun.  I thought I’d drift back to sleep, but the creepy coincidence of the circumstances matching the movie had me wide-eyed and jumpy every time I heard snow on the tube for weeks.
  • Alien – My girlfriend in high school dug her fingernails into my arm as she screamed every time something happened.  Great use of suspense with actually a minimal amount of gore on screen.  Aliens was almost as good, but completely different in pacing and structure.
  • Silence of the Lambs – Not really horror, more crime/suspense, but the final sequence was as unnerving as anything I’d seen.
  • Silent Hill – Normally I wouldn’t have even watched this, but I like Radha Mitchell, Kim Coates, and Alice Krige.  It turned out to be a stylish and gripping movie, excellent for its kind, and inventive.  The religious overtones were more or less out of Hollywood Cliché Central, though.
  • Psycho – Well, you know … it’s Psycho.
  • Army of Darkness – No, it didn’t scare me at all, but it was hilariously creepy and original, and it had Bruce Campbell.  Gimme some sugar, baby.

Update: Some worthy mentions from the comments:

  • The Exorcist – When I finally saw it, it had already become a cultural joke, so it lost some of its power for me — but still first class.
  • Jaws – Yeah, this should have been on my original list.  The great Roy Scheider, the great Robert Shaw, and the great-but-politically-nuts Richard Dreyfuss.
  • Se7en – No one’s mentioned this yet, but it should be on the list.  May not be quite in the horror genre, but it’s close enough.

What are your favorites?  What were the worst?

Addendum: If you are in charge of handing out the candy, too, what were the best outfits you saw?  So far:

  • Toddler sisters in matching butterfly outfits
  • A “grandma” in a hair net and cardigan

Update II: Dirty Harry has more.

Update III: I packed up the Halloween candy and called it a night.  Nothing terribly original in terms of costumes outside of the grandma, but we did get one Zombie Cheerleader (homemade costume, too).  When I turned on the TV, it was tuned to Snoop Dogg’s Hood of Horror.  Pass!

The Exorcist. No question.

No kids came by our house tonight. Now I have a bowl of snack sized M&Ms and Skittles. Whatever will I do with all this candy?

Slublog on October 31, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Army of Darkness hands down. Scary – no; but kick ass funny as hell!

Bruno Strozek on October 31, 2008 at 8:14 PM

The Legend of Hell House. You never see the ghost – only what it does. Scared the bejaysus out of me. What you cannot see is always more frightening than what you can see.

“The life and times of Barack Obama”.

The Excorcist.

Once you understand that it’s the Priest (Damien) and not the girl who’s the target.

If you are in charge of handing out the candy, too, what were the best outfits you saw?

A guy just came to the door dressed as Barack Obama’s tax plan. Scared the crap out of me.

Seriously, though, I had a cute little princess. Only two t or t’ers so far.

Can’t believe you left off Exorcist. Jaws I was pretty scary too. Army of Darkness poster looked pretty ghey IMHO so I never saw the film and won’t comment. Alien I also the best of the lot, just like Terminator I. Frankenstein and Dracula will also be in my top ten as well. Just as Young Frankenstein will always be in my top 10 comedies and halloween movies.

eaglewingz08 on October 31, 2008 at 8:17 PM

I’d have to agree about The Exorcist. I had trouble driving home from it because it messed with my mind so much.

None of the movies are nearly as scary as the prospect of Obama becoming president.

backwoods conservative on October 31, 2008 at 8:18 PM

Whatever will I do with all this candy?

Slublog on October 31, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Obama will be over shortly to redistribute it to kids who were too lazy to trick or treat.

amerpundit on October 31, 2008 at 8:18 PM

After getting 300+ kids, the candy is….done!

Best costume…Kid wearing a big magnet around his neck with barbie dolls and baby chicks attached to it….”Chick Magnet”

Scariest movie? Slublog got it…The Excorcist.

Or the original Jaws movie…that head popping out of the sunken boat made me jump.

Happy Halloween Everyone! Out to the village!

JetBoy on October 31, 2008 at 8:19 PM

The maggot steak scene in Poltergeist always got me. But I have not seen it in a while and wonder if it would have the same affect. The purely formulaic movies now are way too pedictable and rely on the “victim’s” idiocy. Kind of like this year’s election.

The Exorcis is pretty good. What about “The Ring”, and when I was a kid I fonud “Carie” pretty scary.

neuquenguy on October 31, 2008 at 8:20 PM

Here’s what I am doing tonight: I am putting on an Obama mask. I am going to have a huge bowl near the door and it will be empty. When the little kids come up and ring the bell, I am going to open the door and greet them with: “It’s time for some Hope and Change.” Then, while they have their bags out for the non-existent candy, I am going to grab their bags one at a time and weigh them. After I discern which has the most candy, I will reach in and grab a few handfuls and distribute it amongst the rest. I will then take a few pieces from each of the bags to put into my bowl. Then I will tell them that this is “spreading the wealth” like Barack Obama wants to do.

Exorcist.

Before that movie, horror genre was laughably scary. Then comes along that movie and I had to sleep with my bedroom door open for a week….

I saw it in a theater, when it first came out and I was in high school at the time, so now that I’ve dated myself… off I go….

tru2tx on October 31, 2008 at 8:22 PM

“Psycho.” Three scenes. First, the shower scene. Second, when Martin Balsam walks up the stairs and gets stabbed in the head. Third, when the old lady is spun around, turns out to be stuffed, and the shadows from a swinging light go back and forth in her eye sockets. Yikes, yikes, and yikes.

“What Ever Happened to Baby Jane” was not a horror flick, but I remember it bothered me that night.

Byron on October 31, 2008 at 8:23 PM

Yeah the suspense of the current Hollywood-produced election movie is right up there.

This is almost exactly the reaction to Obama of my good friend from Venezuela who says she looks at him and the crowds around him and thinks,

I’m going to have to go with Urban Legends 3: The Legend of Bloody Mary – not because I have horrible taste in horror movies but because my big sister was the killer in that movie.

$22,000 (after taxes and union dues) for 6 weeks of work.

Not bad (well, the movie kind of is….pretty campy….but the money’s not bad).

Tony737 on October 31, 2008 at 8:28 PM

So far costumes have not been very imaginative but two little ones in matching fairy outfits are the winners so far. A lady told me once if you get frightened when your are pregnant that your child will look like what scared you. I am happy to report oldest looks nothing like a shark. I think the scariest was The Omen, because I went in totally unaware of what it was about. Not a happy camper after that movie.

Cindy Munford on October 31, 2008 at 8:28 PM

Reading the thread I remembered:
Curse of Frankenstein – Big Screen – 8 years old – afraid of “behind the door” for years.

eeyore on October 31, 2008 at 8:28 PM

Not even close for me. The Exorcist.

When I went to see it, I didn’t even know that it was a scary movie! Left my scarf in the theatre – and was too frightened to go back in and get it!

pbundy on October 31, 2008 at 8:28 PM

The Exorcist hands down. I refused to watch horror movies before I saw that. Now they are my favorite kind of movies.

The Fly
28 Days Later
The Shining
The Orphanage (Spanish Horror Movie)
Rec. (Spanish Horror Movie) Great movie too
Hellraiser
Nightmare on Elm Street 1
Jacobs Ladder
Seven (Not necessarily a horror, but disturbing as hell)
Audition (Asian Horror Movie)
Alien
The Ring
The Thing

Those are pretty much all I can think of off the top of my head. Some creepier than others, but those are probably some of my favorite horror movies.

Luthien on October 31, 2008 at 8:28 PM

Oh, and “Hostel” freaked me out too!

JetBoy on October 31, 2008 at 8:21 PM

Hostel was complete shit. Complete. Shit.

Silent Hill – Normally I wouldn’t have even watched this, but I like Radha Mitchell, Kim Coates, and Alice Krige. It turned out to be a stylish and gripping movie, excellent for its kind, and inventive. The religious overtones were more or less out of Hollywood Cliché Central, though.

It was based on a video game series of the same name, and I can’t remember if the original followed the same religious lines but I think it did.

Alien & Aliens are too that scared the crap out of me as a kid. The Shining too. Most stuff now is all gore and that can get old.

liquidflorian on October 31, 2008 at 8:29 PM

I just had some “kids” come by. If you are old enough to shave and have a cell phone, you are too old to “T or T”. They get the lower tier of candy, the nasty peanut butter wrapped in orange and black paper or last year’s left overs.

oh, one more: Night of the Living Dead – the original black and white.

Over30 on October 31, 2008 at 8:30 PM

When I was a kid, the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie terrified me.

Best of the modern horror genre: Saw.

Most entertaining horror movie ever: Scream.

ClintACK on October 31, 2008 at 8:30 PM

Byron on October 31, 2008 at 8:23 PM

Three scenes from the Blob:
Girl accidentally pulls boyfriends arm off as he is dissolved right in front of her eyes.
Kid flailing in the water, superficially dissolved, with blob streamers pulling him back in.
Man pulled through ladder waste first by blob tentacle.

…and that’s not even counting the cook pulled through kitchen sink drain head first.

Psychological scarring.

Agree completely. Kinda surprised someone else say [Rec]. They just did an American version called Quarantine, haven’t seen it yet tho. As for Descent, thats the one with the women who go cave exploring and the creatures are down there right? I forgot about that one but it was a very good movie. HornetSting on October 31, 2008 at 8:42 PM

Lady just came to my door with her two daughters, and the mom’s shirt read, “Robin Hood was a communist”.

Robin Hood took from the corrupt aristocrats who overtaxed the hard working people and gave them back their tax money. Robin Hood was a conservative who took drastic action to save the people of his country from a corrupt government that was taxing its subjects and the kigdom into poverty.

theguardianii on October 31, 2008 at 8:43 PM

The Night Stalker….1972. I was 10 and freaked out at the thought of the vampires getting me. Darren McGavin’s 2nd best movie – The Christmas Story being the best.

WOW! The two best of the genre both had him in the movies….Why…it’s a Christmas miracle!

gozips on October 31, 2008 at 8:43 PM

Gotta agree with The Exorcist as scariest. I first saw it on TV was I was about 12.

A few years ago there was a re-release with an added scene of the “spider crawl”. I swear that must have been in the original because that just about epitomizes the creepiness of that movie.

Another that has a big creep factor, and that hasn’t been mentioned yet, is Rosemary’s Baby.

Also, the original version of The Haunting which I first saw on TV when I was about 9. The wallpaper scene in particular made my skin crawl.

Tuning Spork on October 31, 2008 at 8:43 PM

Scariest movies: Alien and Carrie. They worked on a more psychological level rather than “how many ways to slice someone up.” Honorable mentions to Nosferatu and Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Best costume: little girl dressed up as a bumblebee. Looked like a homemade one too. There was another little girl dressed up as a Michigan cheerleader. Pretty gutsy considering this is Toledo.

Then there were the teenagers not dressed up at all. I had extra candy & want to be a good neighbor, but I couldn’t help but think of the Gas & Mortgage woman. Yeesh, the way some people think they’re entitled. I would never have done that when I was a teen.

Multibucket on October 31, 2008 at 8:27 PM

Second that. The Thing is incredibly disturbing and has Kurt Russell at his best.

The scene where they are defibrillating the guy and his chest opens up and bites the docs hands off was totally unexpected.
