We used to call them Czechs, back when it was Czechoslovakia. Shouldn’t we call them something even shorter, now? And why do they get to pronounce “cz” as ‘ch’? What’s up with that?

A. Czechoslovakia (as was) was made up of three regions. There was C’ech (Bohemia), Morava (Moravia), and Slovensko (Slovakia). When Czechoslovakia broke up, it was a matter of what we call Slovakia — long the rural, backcountry part of the nation, which spoke a dialect that became a language — breaking off to become it’s own republic, leaving what we call Moravia (the central bit) and Bohemia (what they themselves call C’ech) staying to be the Czech Republic. C’ech (spelled with a little “V” over the “C”, called a “hac’ek”, making a “CH” sound) is what they call the state, and they’re “c’echy”, pronounced “chechy”, the second “CH” sounding like the “CH” in the scottish “loch”.

B. The “CZ” comes, actually, from the Polish, because that’s how Poles express our English “CH” sound. The Germans spell it “Tschech”. The actually have a distinct letter for it, and use it…and, as we don’t use that same letter (and I checked three different ASCII character lists and didn’t find it, although you can set your keyboard up to type it). Failing that, with an English keyboard (going back to typewriter days), you can express that sound by typing “C’” to express that sound.

…finally, most Europeans, west and central and north and south, are fashionably anti-American in places…what Prague’s becoming known for, for better or worse, is that it’s becoming the porno capital of Europe….

…he’s saying something to the guy he’s punching in the familiar voice (tu, as opposed to vous, for you Francophones out there)…as you would either speak to a child…I remember hearing that Czechs would go from familiar to formal when they wanted to slam you, but not in this guy’s case…it’s sort of a “yo, homeboy, what the **** do you think you’re doin’?!”, whatever the actual words or idioms might be….

…but, c’mon, which of us, stroller tipping or no, hasn’t wanted to sock a reporter at least once in his or her life?

…hell…I’d consider hitting him with the kid…kids are resiliant….
