The obligatory “Aerosmith guitarist endorses McCain” post

posted at 4:35 pm on October 30, 2008 by Allahpundit

Did anyone else expect the news during the final week to be more … exciting? If you’d told me back in February that I’d be blogging the endorsements of 60-year-old guitarists five days out from election day, I’d have said, “Why? Is Ted Nugent going to endorse Hillary?” Instead, this.

Don’t get me wrong, we’re happy to have him. Even if he wouldn’t make the cut of that new “Don’t Vote” video.

“We pretty much stay out of it, but seeing so many people come out for Obama, I just felt like ‘What the hell, I might as well raise my hand for this side,” Perry said from his Duxbury home…

“I’ve been a hardcore Republican my whole life,” he told the Herald. “My mother and father drilled into me from the very start that if you work hard and be positive, you’ll get what you’re working for. I guess I’m living proof of that.”

Of criticism about McCain’s age, Perry said: “My mother’s in her 80s and she does aerobics. My manager’s 70 and he’s right there. That doesn’t bother me.”

And despite lopsided polls, he urged his fans to get out and vote.

“I’m an optimist. It ain’t over till its over,” he said. “I think that he’s got a chance.”

The boss looks forward to playing “Dream On” on “Guitar Hero” but I have other plans. Exit question: If McCain wins, Perry and the Nuge hook up for a blistering cover of “Barracuda” at the inauguration?

That would be nice but, Ann Wilson already said she can’t use it.

Rock and pop artists go out of their way to make sure Republicans/Conservatives don’t use their music as campaign themes. Here are a couple recently I specifically remember…

Jackson Browne said McCain couldn’t use “Running On Empty” for an ad about oil drilling and gas…

“You’re Still The One” by Orleans. They told George Bush last election he couldn’t use it.

They simply hate us.

Most (all?) of the Aerosmith guys live down here on the South Shore and all I’ve seen are McCain signs except 1 hybrid Obama/Kerry sign. If you went by the impression you get here you’d think McCain was going to win Massachusetts in a landslide.

Unfortunately for them, most venues and “travelling shows” including political campaigns purchase a broad license that gives them the right to play a boatload of songs, no matter what the original artist says. I heard this discussed after the GOP convention. I believe it was on Hannity. In any case, Heart has no case to prevent Our Lady Cuda from spinning that tune.

This doesn’t surprise me. My brother once met Perry in an airport bar during a layover, but my brother didn’t recognize him. They struck up a conversation and Perry and my brother talked for about an hour about sports, politics, all sorts of stuff and until a fan came up and asked him for his autograph, Perry never let on who he was. Once the fan left, he turned to my brother and said something like, “why don’t you pretend you don’t know who I am. This is a good conversation.” And they kept on talking until my brother caught his flight.

Perry is a good egg.
