Ohio official admits Wurzelbacher search went farther than she first stated

posted at 8:30 am on October 30, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

When last we heard from Helen Jones-Kelley, the director of Ohio’s Job and Family Services Division insisted that she has everyone who gets public attention checked to see if they owe family support.  Now, with more details about the searches performed on Joe Wurzelbacher becoming public, Jones-Kelley acknowledges she didn’t quite tell the entire truth at first.  Her department also ran checks on taxes and welfare payments to see if they could catch Joe the Plumber cheating the system:

A state agency has revealed that its checks of computer systems for potential information on “Joe the Plumber” were more extensive than it first acknowledged.

Helen Jones-Kelley, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, disclosed today that computer inquiries on Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher were not restricted to a child-support system.

The agency also checked Wurzelbacher in its computer systems to determine whether he was receiving welfare assistance or owed unemployment compensation taxes, she wrote.

Jones-Kelley made the revelations in a letter to Ohio Senate President Bill M. Harris, R-Ashland, who demanded answers on why state officials checked out Wurzelbacher.

Harris called the multiple records checks “questionable” and said he awaits more answers. “It’s kind of like Big Brother is looking in your pocket,” he said.

The entire episode seems rather Orwellian.  Joe the Plumber has the temerity to ask a question of Barack Obama, only after Obama approached Joe.  For this crime of sudden notoriety — and because Obama gave an embarrassing answer that has plagued him for weeks — Jones-Kelley ran several checks to see whether she could have him arrested.  Jones-Kelley, it should be noted, has given the maximum donation to Obama for this election.

Big Brother is watching. Harris is right, and he’s not buying Jones-Kelley’s explanation even in the abstract.  Do JFS employees routinely flip through newspapers and watch television all day and then run the names of all Ohioans who appear?  If so, they must not have much time to get any other work done.

On the other hand, it sounds like a perfect job for a blogger — sit around all day reading the newspapers and watching TV, and then wasting the rest of the day running pointless searches through government systems just on the off chance of finding something sensational.

Where do I sign up?

The real message this sends Ohioans is one of intimidation.  Don’t ask questions of public officials, Jones-Kelley’s actions say, or else watch your reputation get shredded.  Be quiet.  Don’t rock the boat.  We know where you live, and we know what you’ve done.

This, apparently, is Hope and Change for Ohio.  Want to bet that’s a 57-state strategy as well?

Update: Added the link; sorry for that oversight.

At least she finally came clean in the letter, I guess. I say knock a year off her sentence for that.

This is really, really bad. Regular police officers in Ohio can, and have, gotten FIRED for running LEADS inquiries on private citizens without cause. These databases are for “Official Use Only” and not for snooping. I can’t imagine this woman will be able to survive much longer in her job. The pressure on the Governor to fire her is going to just grow.

By the way, are there any father’s rights advocates around here?

This child support crap is beyond the pale. I don’t have any kids, so I’m not personally affected by it, but dear Lord… In Ohio, they can yank your driver’s license, any professional licenses or certifications you have, can garnish bank accounts, wages, etc., have you arrested, and anything else if you get behind on child support obligations… Probably 3/4 of the men affected by this don’t have the means to pay the child support.

How f’ing mean spirited are these people? The guy asks a question, says he wants to buy the plumbing business some day, and the first thing that pops into this woman’s mind (if we take her at her word) is “a-hah, let’s see if we can tag this guy for child support!!!” Talk about Stasi-like practices…

In the meantime, I need to e-mail the head of The Cincinnati Enquirer’s editorial board on its crickets coverage. But, of course, the lead item on the homepage is a story about some half-a** effigy of Obama down at University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky.

Prosecute Kelley of every infraction she incurred however minuscule or weighty.

Any who say “beware of speaking the truth” provide cover for the fascists. Those who think that they are “smart” for vainly hiding in closets when there is time and energy to counter fascism provide momentum to their own destruction.

For what it’s worth, here’s the letter I just e-mailed to the head of the editorial board of my local Ohio daily, The Cincinnati Enquirer–which I also sent to the lone, crochety columnist who has the guts to write about these kinds of matters.

It was captioned “Stunned by the Absence of Coverage.”

I went online today, because I couldn’t get to my hardcopy of The Enquirer, and I still see no coverage about the Ohio official who authorized the invasion of Joe the Plumber’s privacy.

Meanwhile, The Enquirer’s homepage leads with the action of some knucklehead college students at UK.

Mr. Wells, I still remember the excellent article that you ran on a Sunday in mid-March just as the Jeremiah Wright videos hit the fan. The article mentioned a Pew study that said 53% of voters base their votes on character. The article went on to define character, first, by means of a principle of the Quakers: “speaking truth to power.” The article, in turn, defined “speaking truth to power” as, and I paraphrase, “doing the right thing when it will cost you.”

Mr. Wells, to me, that said it all.

Now, I don’t like almost any of Obama’s policies, but I like his character even less. I have never understood Obama’s silence in Trinity United Church of Christ for 20 years while Jeremiah Wright sowed the seeds of hate and mistrust in the hearts of thousands of congregants on too many Sundays during those years. I can only logically conclude that Obama remained silent because it was in his best interest to remain silent. To confront Wright–to call him out on these matters–would have meant Obama’s losing the political support that was critical for his fledgling political career. In other words, Obama did not do the right thing when it would have cost him.

And now I read and hear reports of a 2003 gala send-off dinner that Obama and his wife attended. And at that dinner, many disparaging things were said about Israel. Still, nothing from Obama. Again, further evidence of his lack of character.

Returning to the matter of the Ohio official. I don’t know what’s holding up an editorial rebuke of the Ohio official who has authorized the gross invasion of Joe the Plumber’s privacy with only the flimsiest of justification, but the Enquirer is showing no character in this matter. I don’t presume to understand the politics involved for your publication. But if Cincinnati-area residents can’t look to their major local newspaper to speak truth to power to Columbus and to Governor Strickland and to this useless Obama supporter who intruded in Joe the Plumber’s privacy, why bother supporting that local newspaper?

I included Mr. Bronson in this letter because he’s the only Enquirer columnist in recent memory to demonstrate any kind of character in these matters.

I can assure you that when my subscription needs to be renewed soon, I won’t be renewing. It’s only about $220 a year to your paper, but it’s less I have to spend on a useless product.
