Is Obama his aunt’s keeper?
posted at 9:40 am on October 30, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
The Times of London finds the long-lost relatives Barack Obama could not, but does this really have anything to do with the election? Zeituni Onyango played a memorable role in Obama’s memoir Dreams from My Father, but now lives in a public-housing project in Boston. The “Uncle Omar” that Obama called “lost” has also re-emerged in scruffier surroundings:
Barack Obama has lived one version of the American Dream that has taken him to the steps of the White House. But a few miles from where the Democratic presidential candidate studied at Harvard, his Kenyan aunt and uncle, immigrants living in modest circumstances in Boston, have a contrasting American story.
Zeituni Onyango, the aunt so affectionately described in Mr Obama’s best-selling memoir Dreams from My Father, lives in a disabled-access flat on a rundown public housing estate in South Boston.
A second relative believed to be the long-lost “Uncle Omar” described in the book was beaten by armed robbers with a “sawed-off rifle” while working in a corner shop in the Dorchester area of the city. He was later evicted from his one-bedroom flat for failing to pay $2,324.20 (£1,488) arrears, according to the Boston Housing Court. …
In his book Mr Obama writes that “Uncle Omar” had gone missing after moving to Boston in the 1960s – a quarter-century before Mr Obama first visited his family in Kenya. Aunt Zeituni is now also living in Boston, and recently made a $260 campaign contribution to her nephew’s presidential bid from a work address in the city.
Neither person proved particularly difficult to find. Ms. Onyango had been quoted in one or two articles in the Boston press. Omar, now going by his actual given name Obama Onyango, had been attacked in a robbery in the mid-90s, when Obama began writing his memoir. Certainly, Barack Obama has been easy to find if Aunt Zeituni and Uncle Omar wanted to find him.
Does this really mean much of anything in this election? If it means anything at all, it would only work as a rebuttal to Obama’s accusation about Americans in the Saddleback Forum, when he accused his fellow countrymen of being uncharitable:
“Americans’ greatest moral failure in my lifetime,” he said, “has been that we still don’t abide by that basic precept in Matthew that whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.”
As with Obama’s half-brother George in Kenya, the financial plight of Obama’s relatives challenge the wealthy, successful Obama much more specifically than Obama challenged Americans in that forum. Matthew speaks of all men as brothers, but a failure to care for family speaks much louder than a failure to care for strangers. It makes Obama look a little hypocritical, especially after featuring Zeituni and Omar in one of the books that now provide a healthy income for the presidential candidate. Obama may want to recall the Gospel passages about motes, beams, and thine own eye before lecturing America on Matthew.
Otherwise, though, this seems unremarkable to me. Judging from my e-mail, it’s a popular link this morning, but most of us have extended family in various economic situations. Applying the same mote-beam-eye standard, how many of us send money to those less fortunate among distant cousins, or even relatively close family? And does this really say anything germane about the vote we all will cast in five days — or will we be more rightly focused on policies and experience?

Obama isn’t one of us. He has made that clear. Moreover, he lectures us, and constantly criticizes us, for what he sees as our failings.
It’s only fair he be held to the highest standards, and watched like a hawk for any deviations.

I’ve been thru some REALLY difficult financial hard times, during the past 15 years, started initially by a very difficult Divorce 14 years ago.
I can’t even begin to list all the people who were there to help me:
Father
Mother
Older Brother
Younger Brother
3 – 4 Best Friends
4 – 5 Fellow Marine Officers
4 – 5 Navy Officers I served with..
The help, mostly financial, was offered even to the detriment of some of the people offering it, and was offered freely.
So, sorry, don’t by the argument, this speaks Volumnes about Obama’s LACK of character, and his wife’s lack of character as well!

It’s certainly germaine. He used this woman to bolster his unique narrative in his first book and she lives in the slums of South Boston. Plus, someone got to her to tell her to shut up until after the election. It goes to character and it goes to walking the “redistrubting wealth” walk.
AYNBLAND on October 30, 2008 at 9:54 AM

Goes to character. Not the part about having poor relatives, but going to Kenya, saying he’d help and then not. His wife complaining about struggling to pay for expensive ballet lessons. Her comment about $600 paying for one pair of earrings. Maybe it’s just me, but I start getting a mental images of those two, and it’s not flattering.

I’m really worried about this guy’s convictions. They seem so convenient. He believes we should help our brothers, but can’t be bothered to lift a finger to help his own family. I thought saying one thing, but doing another was something so fundamental regarding a person’s character that all Americans would balk when confronted with it. Yet here it is and no one cares about how it reflects on Obama’s character. Only racists care about character it seems.
blankminde on October 30, 2008 at 9:58 AM
I dunno. I think it’s newsworthy that Senator Obama has relatives who are probably not in this country legally and who are living on public assistance AND contributing to political campaigns.
According to the MSM, illegal immigrants under-utilize public services and comply with all campaign finance laws.

Well…my sister and I most certainly do help support our nephew and his family when they need it. I’m not rich by any means (public school teacher and all that), but I have more than they do and I remember all too well when I was dirt poor and none of my wealthy relatives would have lifted a finger to help me out.
I guess that’s why I’d never be rich–not stingy enough.

The difference between Republicans and Democrats are that Republicans believe in both individual rights and individual responsibilities, while Democrats believe in group rights and group responsibilities.
Obama is just being true to his beliefs — his aunt is not his personal responsibility, but is, instead, the responsibility of the village — i.e., the rest of us.
It’s that same reasoning that seems to cause a 3-to-1 ratio of McCain-supporters to Obama-supporters among active duty and retired members of the armed services — the people who have provided the most costly individual service to our country.

We all imagine what we would do if we won the lottery, or were rich. I dream of a “flat” for my sister, and money for college for some extended family. Even setting aside some for relatives, and hiring a “private eye” to learn their situations.
People are flawed, but we hold others to a standard we would set for ourselves. Obama need only have one or two relatives that he had “rescued” from hell.
No matter how flawed we could admit we are, we would ALL reach out to someone. Obama is a fraud. The idea never occurred to him, or the campaign with $700 million dollars would have found a way to reach out.

Hell yeah it’s important! Here’s why:
What this shows is that his political crusade to spread wealth is all about ideology and societal control and does not come from a moral or Christian understanding of the world where he really wants to do things for poor people and just thinks wrongly that the state should be the focus of that social gospel.
It’s men exactly like Obama who create the situation in families and society where people need the government as much as they do. When it comes to women, the poor, individual freedom, you name it, it’s obvious he doesn’t remotely resemble a Christian. He’s flat out lying about his faith. It’s a ruse to help him rise to power.

Obama has a young half brother where just a few bucks would make all the difference in his life. He has an aunt and uncle who also could use cash gifts and gifts. Most families who are not rich easily provide this to family members in need and it’s no big deal to them.

The fact that nobody cares, is belied by the fact that the ToL published it. Foreign source you say? Hmmm, who’s been touting international support for Obama for the last year? D’oh. The point, it seems to me, is that the domestic media is not covering it and we all know the reason why that is, and it ain’t because “nobody cares”.

I likely have distant relatives I don’t know anything about, but I actually have sent money to my brother and frequently lent to friends in college when they needed it.
There are plenty of Christian principles I need to work on, but caring for friends or family members isn’t one of them. And I’m not wealthy by any American standard.

I you’re an impoverished 56 year old uneducated woman who can’t walk without a walker, living in Kenya and you want to come to the US – what kind of visa do you get?
Is she here legally?
She’s not here on a tourist visa, or a student visa. Apparently nobody sponsored her, or she wouldn’t be living in such serious poverty.

Those other issues have already been front and center. Did you miss that? If so, feel free to check out the vault. There’s likely still a post about it on the front page as well.

“You find your beloved aunt living in a slum. Do you A) Bring her to live with you; B) Give her a few bucks from your $600 million war chest; C) Tell her to shut her pie hole until after the election”

Yep, Obama will be finding Bin Laden in the mountains of Afghanistan, but he can’t seem to find his Aunt in Boston.
Or maybe he did…she’ll tell us after the election.
