AP on Obamamercial: Misleading

I didn’t watch the Obamamercial last night. I felt poorly enough as it was; I got my flu shot in the morning, and it was so effective that I started feeling flu-like symptoms by late afternoon. (I usually get a mild reaction from the vaccine, so this was no real surprise.) Since compounding the symptoms with high blood pressure and a headache seemed like a bad idea, I watched The Last Seduction for the first time in years. Michelle live-blogged it, and apparently I didn’t miss anything.
The Associated Press watched it too, and surprisingly, the 30-minute infomercial also failed to impress them:
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office.
Obama’s assertion that “I’ve offered spending cuts above and beyond” the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by “eliminating programs that don’t work” masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are – beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq.
Calvin Woodward reports that Obama misled viewers on at least five key points in his 30-minute final argument:
- Health care costs – Obama claimed his plan would lower costs by $2500 per year per family, but it doesn’t. In fact, Obama can’t point to any particular cost reductions. He plans to spend $50 billion over five years on modernization and chronic-disease prevention and presumes that this will lower costs in the future, but in the meantime it raises costs at least in the short run on everyone (the $50 billion doesn’t come out of thin air).
- The Pay-Go of his plans – No, he hasn’t demonstrated that he’s found the revenue for his spending, despite his claims last night. Non-partisan analysts believe that his spending programs will add at least $428 billion to the deficit in his first term, and that’s if you accept his non-specific pledge to cut spending in other areas.
- Tax cuts for working class families – Before the commercial aired, he had already begun backing away from that idea because of the financial crisis, although Obama didn’t acknowledge it in the ad.
- The “right” to affordable health care – Obama doesn’t guarantee coverage in any of his plans, at least not for adults.
- Getting out of Iraq – Obama noted that the US spends $10 billion a month in Iraq and talked again about “bringing that war to a close” — but he’s backed away from his previous pledges to get out on a strict 16-month timetable, which is as fast as the remaining units can be properly withdrawn.
In other words, we didn’t miss much, except for the usual evasions Obama gives on the campaign trail.

Any idea what the ratings were, Ed?
I haven’t talked to a single person this morning who watched it last night.
BacaDog on October 30, 2008 at 8:01 AM
Obama is gonna be the next Edsel!
McCain landslide!
Will be amusing to watch!
JellyToast on October 30, 2008 at 8:01 AM
I didn’t watch it either for fear of a stroke.

Obama’s National Service Plan . . . “We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set,” he said Wednesday. “We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded.”
I see, and what do we call this civilian national security force . . . Gestapo or KGB? This guy is horrifyingly frightening.
rplat on October 30, 2008 at 8:05 AM
I watched it. If I had it to all over again I’d rather stick red hot pokers into my eyeballs.
Just sayin’
V5 on October 30, 2008 at 8:06 AM
Not to worry. Once Congress passes Obama’s Enabling Act he will more than make up for any budget shortfalls by nationalizing private property.
Flea on October 30, 2008 at 8:06 AM
I watched the debates and his DNC acceptance speech, but I didn’t watch last night because I knew it would be exactly what we’re calling it: An “infomercial”.
However, I wonder what he was giving away as a free gift for your low, low payments of $19.95? A knife sharpener? A paintbrush for corners? Health care?
eforhan on October 30, 2008 at 8:07 AM
This was one of the great flaws of his speech at Obamapolis in my fair city back in August: high on “whats,” very shallow on “hows.” What was supposed to be this transcendent happening in a packed stadium turned out to be nothing more than another stump speech. As were his debate responses.
Ever think maybe he won’t make it because of Obama fatigue on the part of the unconvinced?
Captain Scarlet on October 30, 2008 at 8:07 AM
In our area, Zero’s running an ad in which he says he will call on the “mobilization of health care volunteers to go into under-served communities.” Great shades of Mao.

Why would anyone subject themselves to a 30 minute commercial for socialism?

hoosiermama on October 30, 2008 at 8:10 AM
As Dennis Miller says (quoting David Mamet): “A-B-C… Always Be Closing if you want the knife set!”
I might suggest he should have thrown in a set of Debbie Meyer Green Bags because, after all, this is the moment the world came together to stop the oceans from rising, the arugula from spoiling…

They say “misleading”. I call it LYING.
SouthernGent on October 30, 2008 at 8:12 AM
I watched the whole snooze fest. If you were an Obama groupie (like Chris Matthews) I guess you liked it. Frankly, for those folks, they could have run 30 minutes of Obama reading a book and they would have swooned.
I found the whole thing pretty depressing. Apparently, this is the first generation to ever face any kind of struggle in the American experience. Some folks even need to use coupons and watch their budgets! Some companies go out of business! Some folks work two jobs! HORRORS!
Hey, I’m not bashing anyone. Just saying that anyone who thinks Obama is going to change ANY of that is nuts.
Didn’t like the scenes with him in a “faux” oval office. Typical Obama pretentiousness. Noticed his $250,000 “rich” number is already down to ($200,000…. and dropping.) And the testimonials from politicians were downright gag inducing.
Sugar Land on October 30, 2008 at 8:13 AM

I watched a few nanoseconds of it. It was like watching a sports puff piece. America is playing its ignoramus card this election apparently.

Did they play “Nearer My G-d to Thee” whilst they were giving their testimonies? Because they totes should have.
Yes, because we all know that the POLICE in America don’t need more funding and more personnel. Instead, let’s make the American version of the Gestapo. Moron, thy name is the One.

NoFanofLibs on October 30, 2008 at 8:22 AM
Did he actually say that?? I only watched for a couple minutes.
If he said that, he is talking a national police force! Folks,, this is the end!
If he is actually going to start some kind of national police SS squad,, some kind of force that will be loyal TO HIM!
Not to the constitution, but loyal to The One!
The great Peoples Truth Enforcers,,
“No longer will lies and deceit be tolerated! All must unite as one with The One!”
CONSERVATIVES MUST RUN FOR OFFICE NOW!!! RUN FOR MAYOR,, RUN FOR CITY COUNCIL,, RUN FOR DOG CATHER,,, IT DOESN’T MATTER THAT YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING,, YOU WILL KNOW MORE THAN THE NAZI’S! RUN NOW!!!
This is where the freakin RINO’s have brought us! Their big tent, hate the Christian right, embarrassed to stand up for conservative principles, lets all just get along and reach out to the other side, afraid to be called a racist attitude,, has brought us face to face with the National Socialist, police state party!!!!
You love ACORN and the Truth Squads??? You’ll really love them when they are nationalized and given nice new unifroms and full police powers!

Yum, I love Chili. I watched “Batman Begins”, talked to my uncle on the phone, and read a magazine.
Because if I heard the One say “Hope and Change” one more time, I would riot. It would be a small riot, contained mostly in my apartment. And that would probably be a beyotch to clean up…..

I’m sick of the sound of Obama’s voice, so I didn’t watch last night. Had it been Joe Biden I would have tuned in. Ol’ Joe guy is far more entertaining than The One.

I believe he’ll go ahead with ludicrous uncosted spending plans – the only question is will he try to finance it with debt (unlikely the credit line will live out for long if he does) or imposing punitive taxes.
False dichotomy – he’s going to do both.

Israel
Iraq
Afghanistan

eaglewingz08 on October 30, 2008 at 8:27 AM
I have a theory. It may be naive, I may be way off base…
I question the timing of the MSM finding a conscience and deciding to actually do a little truthful reporting on The One.
I think you will find that these “truth oriented” stories began cropping up after Team Obama started publicly punishing the left wing press for asking questions, and espousing conspiracy theories about the slightly more conservative press.
Once they figured out that they would be the next group under the bus, the truth started flowing.
Dorvillian on October 30, 2008 at 8:28 AM
I also understand this propaganda stunt cost around
3-4 million bucks, and delayed the World Series!
I watched,Obama dragged out every so-called victim after
another, and the theme was they couldn’t afford the rent,
they could’t afford food, and yet they show a family eating
out at a resturant!
Yet,through this crap,Obama said people were tightening up
their belts, and so Washington has to as well, and yet Hopey
has a grand plan of redistributing of wealth, which means
more tax/spending!
Obama said there’s an energy problem, and yet he wants
Americans to have a car,but yet he claims America is on
the verge of a depression!
One women claimed, that she had to make a decision of either
buying 1/2 gallon,or a gallon of milk!
The whole 1/2 hour was Obama was going to fix the world, your
world will be changed by Obama, only government can fix it,
your a victim,———–Hopey is the only answer!
Note to Team HopeLess/ChangeLess/Lying GafeeBiden this was
a monumetal waste of the commom man’s campaign contributions
that you have p#ssed away—-4 million!!
Oh,and the theme was also,a caring compassionate man,a dedic
ated family man,and yet his Aunt and brother are as poor as
dirt!

I chose to continue reading “The Day of Battle” by Rick Atkinson. It’s the second part of his WWII history of the the US Army in the European theater. It follows “Army at Dawn” which covers the US Army’s first campaign in North Africa. I highly recommend it. To be honest I would have done the same thing for an half hour McCain infomercial as well.

Have you noticed the difference between his voice now and recorded versions from several years ago–like the recently released 2001 video? He’s worked on the voice, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you plan on a life in politics/public speaking. But, in his case, it just adds to the manufactured personal facade vibe that he has.

allahallahoxenfree on October 30, 2008 at 9:12 AM
Ralph Nader is promising to totally cover Health Care Costs under a government plan. Obama is still going to make people pay for their own, which will leave many uninsured.
Ralph Nader is not shy about proposing taxes to Pay-Go for his plans. He will be willing to tax at a level to bring his proposals about, unlike Obama, who is going to have to go back on most of his promises for lack of money.
Ralph Nader can not plausibly call for tax cuts for anybody, because he is, after all, Ralph Nader. But you can bet your boots he is going to hit the rich a heck of a lot harder than he hits the poor, which is what matters in the long run, right?
Ralph Nader is not promising the Right to Affordable Health Care, he’s promising the Right to Health Care, with the costs absorbed by the government. Obama is saying people are going to have to pay for it themselves, at a reduced rate, while Nader is giving it away for free.
Ralph Nader promises we will be out of Iraq by the end of his first week of office. Obama is already backing down on any timetable, and will get us stuck in Iraq forever. He is also talking about an Afghanistan Surge, and Biden is probably right that Obama will be involved in a whole new war within six months.
Let’s face it, Obama has this thing in the bag anyway. Anybody who cares about health care, fiscal discipline, economic justice and ending the war should cast a principled vote for Ralph Nader. Obama doesn’t need these votes, anyway, and voting for him will just reward him for backing down on all the promises he made in the primaries.

Oldnuke on October 30, 2008 at 9:49 AM
I didn’t watch the Obama infomercial, but if Obama really said this, the McCain campaign should HAMMER this! What does Obama want–a police state? The Thought Police of George Orwell fame?
The real American military spends most of its money on weapons, not personnel–fighter jets, battleships, tanks, and helicopters are very expensive compared to the salaries and supplies needed by servicemen. If Obama’s “civilian national security force” was “just as well funded” as the military, but each member was given a salary, a rifle, body armor, and ammo, Big Brother Barack could probably form his own 3- or 4-million man army, ready to intimidate all opposition.
This is downright FRIGHTENING, and Obama should have had the good sense to let this issue drop off the radar, instead of bringing it up six days before the election. McCain / Palin should hit this HARD and instill fears of a police state in the electorate, and this would not be “negative campaigning”, just showing voters what Obama himself is proposing.

Obama’s infomercial reduced his campaign to a combination of thighmaster and hair club for men. The idea that someone can take over the airwaves for that long to spout platitudes and propaganda should scare people into wondering just how often Obama will do that when he can do it for free as President, but the Oprahesque shlock served up last night will probably just reduce Obama to the level of HSN huckster in the eyes of many.
