Sign the Vets for Freedom petition demanding an apology from Murtha

Yesterday, I posted the latest ad from Vets for Freedom demanding that John Murtha apologize for smearing the Marines in Haditha. Today, you can add your voice to that effort. VFF has a new petition called Stop the Smears asking Murtha for a formal retraction of his remarks. In fact, you can sign the petition right here at Hot Air:

In November 2005, you accused a group of United States Marines of killing “innocent civilians in cold blood”. You made these allegations during an ongoing investigation. In fact, a Marine Corps spokesman said that you made your statement a week before you had even been briefed.

You continued to accuse these eight Marines of “cold-blooded murder and war crimes” well into the next year, even after the Marine Corps itself said your comments on the matter “would be inappropriate and could undermine the investigatory and possible legal process.”

As a result of the investigation, the charges were dropped against 7 of the 8 Marines and the other Marine is awaiting his day in court.

However, you have not withdrawn your statements or apologized for your defamatory remarks.

Marines implicated in the incident believe that you have committed slander and libel against them. These United States Marines, whose honor you have attacked, deserve to hear an apology from you.

We, the undersigned, implore you, Representative Murtha, as a man who serves the public in Congress, as a man who once served in the Marine Corps, to do the honorable thing.

You must apologize.

Signed,

  • Pete Hegseth, Vets for Freedom
  • Erick Erickson, Red State
  • Paul Mirengoff, Powerline
  • Marc Danziger, Winds of Change
  • Jim Hoft, Gateway Pundit
  • Roger L. Simon, Pajamas Media
  • Ed Morrissey, Hot Air

I already did and sent a personal e-mail to him and called his office. I wasn’t able to speak to him, but I spoke with a very testy aide.

I signed it, but I doubt Murtha is going too.

Done.

Murtha is such a disgrace, not just to the Marine Corps, but to the rest of the military too.

Anna on October 29, 2008 at 5:48 PM

I’ve sent it in for me and my blog!

originalpechanga on October 29, 2008 at 5:49 PM

Apology? I want to see him weeping like a child come 8 Nov.

Elizabetty on October 29, 2008 at 5:49 PM

Every time I sign an online petition, I get a flood of fundraising emails from the group originating the petition.

Personally, I hope Spanky continues saying stupid @#$% instead of barfing out an insincere apology.

Add those two together, and I think I’ll pass.

innominatus on October 29, 2008 at 5:49 PM

Neat that I could sign it right in here.

I’m with petefrt – a few well-targeted action items are most welcome.

U.S. Rep. John Murtha stands by a controversial remark he made previously that U.S. Marines killed women and children “in cold blood” in Haditha, Iraq, in November 2005.

The blunt description changed how American troops engaged Iraqis and improved overall conditions in the war, Murtha, an 18-term Democrat from Johnstown, said today during a wide-ranging interview with Tribune-Review reporters and editors.

“There are all kinds of things that have happened that have made a difference, but one of the big differences is that we are not bullying our way through like we used to,” said Murtha, a former Marine and decorated Vietnam combat veteran. “The rules of engagement are clear — and it’s changed. One of the things that has made it better in Iraq is we are no longer just breaking down doors.”

Is video on site

If you’re really worried about giving out your email address, get one that’s “disposable”

I’d rather have him gone.

snickelfritz on October 29, 2008 at 6:06 PM

Murtha, an 18-term Democrat from Johnstown

There is just something fundamentally wrong with that right there.

How heavily is Murtha’s district infested with ACORN? Poll watchers needed either way.

Brother? Isn’t that racist?

fourstringfuror on October 29, 2008 at 6:23 PM

I signed with my work email address and then my wife signed with our home email address too.

By the way, tar and feathers is just too good for this “man”! I think he deserves far worse, but I just can’t think of what it should be.

Considering it was a teamsters union hall that should give some clues as to who was there.

William Amos on October 29, 2008 at 7:16 PM

I signed but, honestly, what is it going to do?

That arrogant pig-faced bastard doesn’t act off of stuff like this. In no particular order, Murtha needs to be voted out of office, forced to pay millions in a civil damages lawsuit filed by the Marines he slandered, and be so disgraced we never have to deal with this traitor again.

highhopes on October 29, 2008 at 7:16 PM

Viper1 on October 29, 2008 at 6:57 PM

In the Obama-world, anyone who loves the United States, supports the troops overseas, and actually supports and defends the Constitution will be racist.

Proud to sign….

…here’s to all those marines, as well as soldiers, sailors, airmen and coasties who have served, and thanks to the missteps, faux pas and slips of the tongue of our elected “leaders”, who will have to serve in future. Semper fi.

Puritan1648 on October 29, 2008 at 8:08 PM

Signed. And I am still amazed that Murtha’s spokesperson yesterday said that he would not comment because the investigation is ONGOING! And that two of the Marines can have the charges brought back up at any time.
We will not be hearing from this blowhard for a LONG time.

Um. Why can’t we see the petition results so far? Why can’t we see the list of names of those whom have signed the petition so far? Why can’t we see anything at all regarding this ‘petition’ but their statement and the empty box that starves for my e-mail address?

While I wholeheartedly agree with their statement and to my very soul believe that John Murtha is an evil decrepit fat-assed curmudgeon whom being called scum is an insult to scum, and is absolutely an enemy of the state… No Thank You.

I learned my lesson about these ‘on-line petitions’ a long time ago. This is an interwebs-age old gimmick that the gullible’s fall for. I already get puh-lenty of junk e-mail as it is.
