Open thread: Transmission from Mt. Olympus, or whatever else you’re watching

8 p.m. ET on CBS, NBC, Fox(!), Univision, etc etc. ABC and all three cable news nets are scheduled to be Hopenchange-free, but don’t be surprised if Olby points the camera at a monitor airing the commercial and just lets it roll until 8:30. That’s pretty much all “Countdown” is anyway.

Here’s a sneak preview, in which we find The One using his “empathy” voice — quite distinct from this one — and the awkward directionless hand gestures to which we’ve become accustomed during these closing arguments. Snark away below. If you’re depressed at the sight of him momentarily taking over the airwaves, this might cheer you up.

While we wait, anyone have any song ideas for Joe Wurzelbacher? A country/western cover of “Taxman” is obligatory. What about originals? “Your Cheatin’ Clogged the Drainpipe to My Heart”?

I’m listening to “The Forgotten Man” on my iPod. No TV. But I will be curious to read this thread later on!

My heart is erect. Hannity has a good team lined up ready to dissect his nonsense. Steyn, Newt etc.

lodge on October 29, 2008 at 7:24 PM

Geez, I’m amazed at how thoroughly I loathe this guy. Should he win, he’s gonna get my every talent spent fighting his every effort for the next four years.

beatcanvas on October 29, 2008 at 7:24 PM

I’ll be reading after I put the kids to bed. Tom Clancy’s The Bear and The Dragon. I think Jack Ryan is a good alternative to the One, and at least it’s good fiction (as opposed to the fiction that’ll be spewed from the TV tonight).

Anna on October 29, 2008 at 7:26 PM

Actually, I liked the fact that BHO brought up “shared my toys in kindergarten” as some sort of idiotic replay of the “I was 8 years old at the time …”. I would like someone to probe these times. It would be nice for all of us to hear about the good old days growing up as a young Indonesian. I’d like to know about that.

Sorry, I need to immediately clean out the grease trap in the grill…I think I’ll find it comforting…I hate watching church programs on TV.

For starters, I think Joe should cover Merle Haggard’s “Fightin’ Side of Me.”

I’m going to be very disappointed if he doesn’t re-use his impressive Greek Columns. And he sure as hell better have some clips of him pandering the German vote in there somewhere!!

BigWyo on October 29, 2008 at 7:30 PM

I’ve not decided whether to watch or not. It is not as if there is anything Obama could say now to get my vote.

I can’t take this slick Communist lying sack of crap.

benrand on October 29, 2008 at 7:31 PM

I hear he’s gonna have four families on. They’ll probably be complaining about 8 years of Bush and The Lord will sit at the kitchen table with them and explain how their $500 check will save their lives.

Read ‘Clear and Present Danger’ or ‘The Sum of All Fears’ instead. From about ‘Debt of Honor’ onward, Clancy started getting stale and preachy. Nothing against a writer working his political beliefs into his novels, but Clancy took it to an extreme where it just became tedious.

ugh, this whole thing makes me want to puke… but I’m praying that it totally bombs, and I have a feeling it will… or at least won’t get nearly the numbers they’re hoping for. I’m sure the media will go wild with how many “millions” watched, but I’d be willing to bet that if they compared the numbers to any normal Wed. they’d be no different, and actually Obama will probably get fewer. Wishful thinking on my part?

beatcanvas on October 29, 2008 at 7:24 PM

That’s what he expects you to do. He doesn’t really care if some some conservative guy somewhere is mad about his radical socialism.

May I take a moment to sell you on my idea?

One of the main “rules for radicals” is to make the people in power follow certain laws to the letter and to attempt to overwhelm the system with pointless requests and demands until the system breaks down.

If we get the much touted one party rule I’m going to spend all of my time looking for government handouts. I’m going to get some welfare, some food stamps, some disability (for my mental anguish) and on and on.

I’ll be sitting back on my ass – fighting fire with fire.

I’m not going to watch. I’m going to go over to Hulu and watch Chuck because the blond girl is a whole lot prettier than BO. Is that racist of me to think a white girl is prettier than the One?

jmarcure on October 29, 2008 at 7:47 PM

That’s pretty much all “Countdown” is anyway.

Hmmmm… couldn’t the same thing be said about this Blog?

Well, all it is, is a bunch of guys reporting fox news clips, making stupid jokes about Obama, and sucking up to Bush.

Of course, I know this isn’t true. But, if you’re going to make broad based unfair analogies, you’d better be prepared to get them back, turban boy.

Vatican Watcher on October 29, 2008 at 7:36 PM

I always read them in order, so that’s the one I’m on right now. My fave will always be Cardinal of the Kremlin – I bawl like a babe every time I read the ending. And yeah, there are things I’ve noticed about his political beliefs that I never noticed when I read the books as a teen (I read each one as they came out, from the mid 90’s on). I just ignore it – and I skip over the tank battles. They bore me.

Still, anything is better than watching that crap tonight. And speaking of crap, one of my kids has a diaper full of Obama talking points that I need to change.

I don’t want Obama to be President. He’s a nice guy and he brings some positive things with him. However, I feel that after four years of him, and after learning what the thugs of the world did on his watch, people will wish they had elected the hawk, John McCain.

Baphomet on October 29, 2008 at 7:58 PM

I’m doing what every good Baptist church sound guy does on Wed. I’m with THE Lord, not a lord.

Centurion68 on October 29, 2008 at 7:59 PM

Obviously I’m not going to watch it, but a lot of people in Arlington County, Virginia, will be. If you had just arrived in this country, and didn’t know much about the issues, it would be easy to fall for this guy just watching him. I’d sooner stay home than vote for Obama, but I have to concede, he’s run the most unique presidential campaign I’ve seen in my lifetime. He certainly showed what you can do with enough money. But he’s also been very crafty about it. Every move is perfectly planned. It’s like watching every B-movie I had ever seen about the coming of the Antichrist when I was younger. “In the last days, the Evil One will appear as an angel of light, and will succeed in deceiving even the elect.” I read that in a book somewhere once.

I hope this nation can survive Obama if, God forbid, he were to win. If that happens, it will be because the Republican Party spent most of the past year scratching its collective ass trying to figure out which end of its collective carcass was forward. After wasting months touting the least offensive middle-of-the-road candidates possible — Mitt, Rudy, and the rest of the country-club set — the only really smart move they ever made was selecting Sarah Palin as the VP candidate, thus solidifying the base of the party.

If our nation were not to survive this episode, it may be due to our failure to heed the warning of Cicero: “A nation can survive its fools and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within.”

And for the love of Pete, the next person to call my house to tell me in a recorded/reading from a script voice about any candidate/position is going to get it from me. I hate Virginia for several reasons, and it being a swing state isn’t making me like it any more. I am tired of the commercials I can’t escape – I even heard them on the radio while shopping at the commissary. Sick of the signs, the mailers, the fliers. I am out of patience for the door-to-door Obamatons, for the sheep in my neighborhood who sport their yard signs in defiance of the HOA (as I get harassed by them for my bumperstickers and for daring to put an elephant mask in my window on a pumpkin). I’d stop coming to Hot Air, but it’s a habit and a vice, and I’ve stopped going anywhere else on the internet that even relates to anything political. I feel as though I’m counting down the seconds until midnight on the 4th, as if the world will return to normal and this election season from hell will be over and I can watch commercials without cursing again.

And yes, I do feel a bit better now that I’ve got that off my chest… even though the phone is ringing. Again.
